IF I LET YOU GO (PART VII) Author: Jay Cee

"Oh no, what did I just step in?" Nicky said, concerned, "not cow shit, uh, my new loafers."

"Quit being such a pretty boy Nicky, this is serious."

"Sorry Kian, but do you have any idea how much these cost? They cost me..."

"No I don't, and I don't really give a fuck right now, all I care about is..." Kian's voiced trailed off, leaving the boys in silence. The only sound was that of the grass brushing against their shoes as they came closer to the edge of the forest.

"Alright you two," said Bryan, stepping in "let's just get down there, and find Mark, make sure he's okay, yeah?"

"Yeah" replied Nicky and Kian in unison.

A few more minutes of walking, and they were at the stream.

"Okay," Shane said, "this is where we split up. Bryan and Kian that way" he said, pointing downstream, "and Nicky and I this way. Make sure you two don't get lost either, okay?"

"We won't, though it's you we should be worried about, you lost Mark in the first place Shane," Kian said, the anger audible in his voice.

"There's no time for arguing Kian, let's just go," Bryan said, laying his hand on Kian's shoulder, willing him away from confrontation. With that they headed off, trudging slowly through the leaves and mud that lined the small banks of the stream.

"Mark! Maaark!" Nicky called out. "Shane, help, would you! Pointing that light straight ahead and saying nothing is not going to find Mark you know."

Shane stopped dead in his tracks. He looked up to the sky, and let out a deep sigh.

"This is all my fault you know Nicky."

"You shouldn't listen to Kian, Shane. He's just angry."

"I know he is, but that doesn't change the fact that he's right."

"What do you mean Shane," Nicky said, approaching Shane in the twilight, reaching around Shane and resting his hand loosely on his shoulder. Shane raised his hand unconsciously, letting it sit on Nicky's. The warmth of Nicky's skin, and the way his breath tickled Shane's neck made him shudder.

"We had an argument, he ran off, now he's lost. Fuck Nicky, what will I do if we don't find him? What if he dies out here, what then? It's all my fault." Shane tasted the saltiness of his tears as they ran down his cheeks, and past the corners of his mouth.

"It's alright Shane, we'll find him, don't worry," Nicky said, pulling Shane into a tight embrace. Shane rested his head on Nicky's shoulder, his nose buried down in Nicky's jumper, taking in deep breaths of Nicky's intoxicating scent. Shane's hands worked their way around Nicky's back, reciprocating the hug. Still sobbing, Shane raised his head, his lips brushing lightly past the skin of Nicky's neck. Hew drew back, his eyes staring deep in Nicky's, whose shone in the pale light from the moon.

The look in Shane's eyes made Nicky's heart beat faster, but then the connection between them was lost, as Shane looked away.

"We have to find him. Come on, we have to keep looking."

The beating in Nicky's chest slowed as Shane turned away and continued down the bank of the stream.

"Shit, I hope he hasn't kept walking" Kian said "if he's stayed in the one spot we have a better chance of finding him."

"You're really worried, aren't you Kian?" Bryan replied.

"Of course I am Bry, aren't you? This is Mark we're talking about here!"

"I am too, Kian, I am too."

They continued downstream, the only sound being the squelching of their shoes in the mud and the trickling of the water as it wound its way through the forest.

"Let's split up Bryan."

"That's not a good idea Kian."

"But we'll have a better chance of finding him, please."

"I don't know."

"We'll never find him this way, not by sticking to the stream. Look, there's a path marked out over there. I'll follow it, you stick to the stream. Okay?"

"Alright, but if you get lost, I'll, I'll kill you, y'know."

"Yeah, whatever, I'll see you soon, hopefully one of us will find him."

"Yeah, be careful, 'kay?"

"Course."

With that they set off in separate directions. Kian scoured the scrub, illuminating as much of the ground with the torch as he could, passing the beam of light left and right. His body shivered in the crisp night air. If I'm this cold, how is Mark feeling? Mark was only dressed in a pair of shorts and a tee-shirt, he'd be freezing by now.

"Maaark! Maaark!"

Kian's voice bellowed through the stillness, the sound echoing off the trees. He kept walking, keeping a fast pace to try and stave off the effects of the cold. He stopped again, listening for any movement in the forest. Suddenly, he heard the rustle of leaves to the right. He shone the light over there, capturing a rabbit in the beam. It scurried off into the forest, frightened at the encounter. Kian set off again, disheartened that he still had not found Mark. He walked a little while, then spotted a log, and decided to have a rest. He flicked the light switch on his watch. 8:30pm.

"Mark? Where are you?" Kian said quietly into the night air. "What am I going to do without you?"

There was the sound of rustling leaves behind the log, and Kian looked behind him, shining the torch, which bathed the near frozen form of Mark in its light.

"Ki...Kian....Its you..."

"Mark, oh my god! Mark!"

"I thought that..." Mark could barely utter the words through the chattering of his teeth. Kian quickly took off his coat and wrapped it around Mark's shaking body. He held Mark's cold body close to his, his hand cradling Mark's head against his shoulder. Kian planted his lips on Mark's cheeks, kissing him lightly, his tears mixing with Mark's.

"I was so scared I was going to lose you..."

"Y..y..you were?"

"Don't ever leave me Mark, I don't want you to ever leave me."

"I won't Kian, I won't."
