"John."
"John, wake up!"
I felt a hand on my shoulder shaking me out of my slumber. I took a second to take in my surroundings I was on the sophomore benches. Remembering that my mom had an early shift at the hospital and offered to give me a ride to school. Granted it was more than an hour earlier then I would normally arrive but anything is better than the damned bus. So running on two hours of sleep from the night due to a combination of homework and "nocturnal activities", needless to say I was extremely exhausted. Looking up to see who had awoken me from blissful rest I saw my best friend and one of the most popular guys in school, Bryan Chang. Bryan was one of those guys that seemed to attract everyone. Very good looking, with an athletic body earned through hours a week of rigorous training for soccer, likewise had a natural tan from being outside all the time. He was genuinely very pleasant and didn't mind talking to anyone who wanted his attention. One his flaws however was that fact he was a hopeless procrastinator.
"What up Bry?"
"Ummm...you think I could borrow your English paper, for some ideas" he asked looking up at me a little sheepishly.
"How come you didn't start looking for an idea, two weeks ago when Mrs. Obrien assigned us the paper?"
"Come on John you know how busy at night I have been lately"
"I don't know if I consider you talking to Katie until three in the morning, so that you can get into her panties as being busy" I said smirking a little and starting to rummage through my bag to find the aforementioned paper.
"You know it's not like that, I think we have a real connection"
"Hah" I scoffed. "Sure we will go with that, connection my ass" I said sarcastically, handing him my paper.
"You never know" he laughed.
I decided to leave it at that for now. "Just remember to change the spelling and stuff" referring to my paper.
"You know I always do, I mean when have we been caught before?"
"Try last semester, I thought Mr. Wang was going to fail us, he can be such a hardass."
"OK, ok I promise" accompanied with a smartass salute.
I turned around heading to homeroom, when Bry stopped me again. "So you're coming on Saturday right?" reminding me of the party that one of his soccer buds Nic was throwing.
"You know that ain't my scene" I wasn't into the whole waiting for the weekend until someone's parents left town so they could throw a house party and everyone could get drunk, Not to mention Nic was senior, one of the `heroes' of the school. Which means it was going to be mostly upperclassmen and I cannot say that I would exceptionally please to be by myself while Bry was getting smashed off his ass.
"Come on you never come out with me" this was true me and Bry had a very interesting relationship that resulted out of necessity more than anything else. During freshman year he was struggling to pass Geometry class and since I was in honors Algebra II with the juniors they asked if I could tutor him. Leading him to get an A- in the course which he was unbelievably thrilled hence the formation of our unlikely friendship. I didn't mind hanging out with Bry at school but I always felt a little uncomfortable around his friends. Not that any of them said anything condescending to me but I guess I just felt Doxin in a pack of German Shepherds just didn't fit in.
"Fine I will think about it ok."
"Come on john just come for one hour if you don't like it we will leave. I promise"
"Alright alright one hour"
"Plus I think Melissa is going to be there I know she is the one you had your eye on." Melissa was a mammoth a human being and captain of the math team. She was getting into the habit of stopping me in the halls to see how my prep for the next math team meet was going.
"If you keep being an ass you can go by yourself" punching him in the arm.
Hearing the first bell ring we bump fist and head in opposite directions. I head to the bathroom to splash water on my face before heading to class. After a quick piss, I headed to the sink taking off my glasses and rinsing my face. Looking at my refection through the scratch up glass I see myself. Most people know me for winning the math team state championship last year unheard of as a freshman. I also play golf which besides the constant walking involved my dad takes very seriously. Having me run and lift at the gym which keeps my body nowhere near muscled but at least for the most part toned. So while I was no Channing Tatum I think I did alright for myself. Splashing some water in my thick black hair and having my brown eyes stare back at me for a minute, then realizing that I smelt something peculiar. I noticed the haze of smoke that was forming around me it did not smell like regular cigarette smoke nor did it have the gut wrenching twinge that I know pot fumes gives me. But luckily I did not have to wait long. The last stall swung open at that moment and walked out aforesaid senior star soccer player Nicholas Pang. Now Nick was not your stereotypical Chinese bookworm. For one he was tall just about 6 feet and due to athletic prowess had an exceptionally attractive body. With black hair which was normally styled in the faux hawk without gel so it seemed like he just woke up like that. Piercing steel colored eyes, chiseled jaw and amazing complexion. All the girls wanted him so did I if I was being truly honest with myself but unlike me most of the girls did get him in the sack at least. It was not only his looks that fascinated people he also had a witty humor that could make anyone smile. As I stood there appraising him, his greatest repellent characteristic reminded me of why I hated him so much.
He opened his beautiful mouth and said "what the fuck you staring at you ass-wipe?"
All because last year in alg class he was called on and instead of paying attention he was goofing off with his friends and couldn't come up with the answer. Now Nic wasn't dumb quite the opposite but he was lazy and knew just how to get by with the `Bs'. Mr. Smith then asked me and of course having no friends in the class I could perfectly articulate the answer. Now a freshman showing up a junior is one thing but what made matter worse was Nic's girl at the time felt to urge to make a remark about how its sucked to have such a dumb boyfriend which embarrassed him more. Needless to say that wasn't an issue for her by the end of the day. But it pretty much concreted my fate with Nic Pang and branding me in his eyes as a suck up. Now luckily there was no alpha male if our school so just because Nic hated me that didn't really mean the feeling resonated with the rest of his crowd so basically if I steered cleared of him I really didn't affect me too much.
I just ignored him and started to head out the door when a hand grabbed my shoulder spin me around. Handing me paper towel and said "I think you got something on your nose" and walked out leaving me fuming.
As I was walked down the hallway I was actually still pretty pissed off. Normally when people get under my skin I can normally brush it off and not really worry about it. But it was always different with Nic. I am not sure if it because I a part of me wished that I could be that girl on his arm or because he is the only one that could look at me with such malice and reason against me being far beneath his normal disposition. I was in such a state of confusion that I walked straight passed my homeroom.
"Mr. Lau, Mr. Lau," I turned around hearing my name.
"I was just wondering if were planning to join us today? Because you are already tardy as usual" said Mr. Smith, my favorite teacher in this school.
"I don't know it depends are you gonna write me up due to my constant lethargy, as you keep promising" I asked with my tone of usual playful sarcasm.
"Just get into the class room, you smartass" he said with a smile holding the door open for me. Now this may seem like a strange teacher-student relationship but this is how Mr. Smith is with all the students. He loves teaching and is relatively young just about 28 I think. So a lot of students just thought of him as another one of us.
"Now that Mr. Lau has chosen to grace us with his presence we may begin" said Mr. Smith adding a bow to me for good measure.
"As we all know we don't celebrate our homecoming with a football but with a soccer game instead." Mr. Smith added.
I was kind of shocked last year when I first heard that we didn't have a homecoming football game. After thinking about it rationally I guess I understood. I mean a predominately Asian catholic school will cause some issues forming a football team due to the obvious size constraints. Which meant that our homecoming festivities were a little later in the year then most but actually winning homecoming did boost morale somewhat.
"Therefore tickets to the homecoming dance will be on sale starting two weeks from today in the cafeteria for the dance three weeks after that. Any question regarding homecoming week? No Ryan you will still be assigned homework even if you managed to make varsity this year" he added after seeing Ryan's hand shoot up with the normal question. Too much laughter from the room as Ryan put his hand back down. Smiling good naturedly.
"If no one has any question, feel free to do whatever you want for the next 18 minutes" he said glancing at the clock on the wall.
Most people pulled out their books and were attempting to finish the last bit of homework or have an impromptu study session. I pulled out a new book and began reading.
"Hey john you think I can talk to you for a sec" I looked over my book seeing Mr. Smith standing in front of me.
"Sure" I said following him to his desk.
"So you doing ok you looked pretty out of it when you were walking in the halls this morning" he asked with general concern on his face.
I think this is why everyone loves Mr. Smith so much. He was funny yet when he needed to be you know that he could lend his ear and was willing to hear us out. But he would make sure to do it in a way that wouldn't embarrass us.
"Nah, I am good. I just had and earlier than usual wakeup call that's all. You know how I love getting up in the morning my favorite." I said with a small smile.
"Alright, well you know where to find me if you need me." That being my cue to leave, I went to my desk and sat back down.
So after the bell signaling first period rang I picked up my belongings and headed out the door. Stepping out of the room I remembered what class I had next. Slapping my forehead I remembered that it was both my favorite and most dreaded course of the day, pre-calculus. Now under most circumstance there would be no reason for me to dislike math for any reason except. I had the great pleasure of sitting next to only person in the school that seemed to loath me. Walking into the classroom I spotted my for lack of a better term arch nemesis. I should mention that since our school is so small that they had to improvise in regards to some classes. Due to the fact our class was relatively small it was deemed that we didn't deserve a "real" classroom but were instead placed in one of the science labs. This means of course not only did I have to sit next to the famous Nic but I had the privilege of sharing a table with him. Walking over to our table I chanced a glance at that striking face to be welcomed with the same look I receive day in and day out. Leaning back and the stool with one eyebrow cocked as if daring me to sit down. Like every other day I drop my bag on the floor and with a sigh of exasperation and climb on my own seat and determinedly stare forward. All was going well or at least as well things can go with someone who hates you sitting next to you can go. Mr. Wong the most hyperactive math teacher in the history of education. This man was so short that he would have to jump to erase the top of the white board but he would do it with an exuberance you wouldn't think possible. While possessing the passion that most teachers lacked but wasn't the most perceptive person caught in his world of Composite functions and Polynomial functions. If it wasn't for Nic who was turned around to talk to his buddies Alan and Darren I would be immersed in his world as well. Despite my better offer I could not help over hearing Nic say "yeah I think Sharon is going to give it up this weekend I cannot fucking wait"
"Hah, you think Miss. Celibate until marriage is gonna give you anything until you pledge your wedding vows?"asked Alan.
"You think anyone can resist this" Nic responded with a flex of his bicep. This caused both Alan and Darren to snicker and me to put quite a smirk on my face.
"What the fuck you smiling at you ass-wipe" said Nic directing the comment at me, thereby causing my cheeks and ears to go red in embarrassment.
"Jesus Nic why do you always have to be so dick to John you know he is tight with Bry" said Darren his statement catching me by surprise. I am use to polite indifference I never expected someone actually defend me so candidly me.
"So what? That doesn't mean he's not a suck up" retorted Nic.
"He answered one question when you busy bullshitting around how does that make him a suck up?" said Darren in further defense of me.
Nic who didn't seem like he had anything to say to this look pissed off mumbled something that sounded like whatever and turned to face the front.
Looking back at Darren he gave me a small smile and nodded to the front of the room, causing me to realize that Mr. Wong was calling my name. Due to the fact I am normally about a week ahead of the class I was able to walk to the board and complete it flawlessly after just glancing at the board. Heading back to seat I noticed that Nic looked even more pissed off then he did before.
After the bell rang and I was packing up my books when Darren approached me.
"Hey" was his greeting.
"Hey, thanks for defending me back there" I thought I at least owned him a bit of gratitude.
"No prob, that's kind of what I came over here to talk to you about" he said.
"Oh what about?" I said somewhat confused.
"I just wanted you know that Nic isn't all that meets the eye, I hope given the chance you give him a chance. To show you he's not as big if an ass I know he acts toward you." On that rather eccentric note he turned and walked away.
As if on cue, Mr Wong asked me to meet him at his desk.
"Hey john, do you think I could ask for a favor?"
"Sure Mr.Wong, What do you need?" I asked.
"Well as head of the math department I know the miracle you worked with Bryan Lee last year in helping him bring up his dismal math grade. I was wondering if you were willing to try your magic again. I have been tutoring this kid for a couple of weeks but it seems as though a student's perspective might do him good.
"I don't mind anyone as long as it isn't Nic. "I said with a laugh only I wasn't joking.
"As a matter a fact" said Mr. Wong trailing off.
"Are you kidding me? Did you ask him? I am sure that he would never agree if he knew it was me that was suppose to help him." I said my voice I little desperate.
"Well with the imposing soccer season looming so near he is quite frantic and frankly if he doesn't drastically improve I can't do anything but place him on academic probation until the end of the season."
I now understood Darrens words he was hoping that I would tutor Nic thus saving the soccer season for the school. Granted now I knew of the second motive to defending in class today I also felt I should at least heed Darrens words and give it a try.
"Ok. I will try. But if he so much as makes me regret for one second that I am taking time to help him as god as my witness will quit." I said a little too dramatically but it honestly was what I was feeling.
"That's fine as you know tutors can accept or deny any student they feel isn't performing 100% to their satisfaction. To give you a little more incentive, I will be able to pay you."
"What?" I asked excitedly
"Well as I think you know every department is able to hire 3 `student-tutors'. Granted its minimum wage up to 10 hours a week but you may as work many or as little as you deem fit. But it's something at least" he responded.
"But I thought those were reserved for senior?" I asked
"Well normally they are but since it seems you have quite an aptitude for filling in where my colleagues and I seem to agree that you would be a great tutor."
"Ok. So how does this work? Since I am getting paid do I need to do the tutoring at school? To be monitored? Last year I was able to work with Bryan outside of school which I think relaxed him which helped a lot." I asked.
"No there is not a need for it to be done here the tutoring is honor based. We normally just give you the 10 hours of week unless you make aware otherwise. Mostly because the tutors like yourself seem to take pride in seeing the person they are working with do well, so more the 10 hours are put in. That is in no way required it just seems to work out that way. Plus I know that you have far more interesting tools at your disposal" he added smiling.
"Yeah a few things that I think made Bry really wanna learn the subject." I said, knowing that he was referring to my tablet computer and interactive smart board at home.
"So I will ask that you both meet after class tomorrow to work out a schedule."
"Sure, Thanks Mr. Wong" I shook his hand and walked out the door.
