Chapter 1

The rain drops hypnotized me as I stared out the window. It was suppose to be sunny today. The weatherman said there was no chance of rain. Apparently he was mistaken. As I take a deep breath, I look around the living room. This house is so big, and empty. It's been 3 months since he left. I finally managed to sell the place.

As I gathered the last few boxes, my cell phone rang. It was my sister.

"Hey sis." I answered.

"Where the hell are you?" she mocked my mothers tone.

"Relax. I'm just waiting for the rain to stop. Then I'm on my way." I chuckled, "Have they started on the floors yet?"

"Yeah. Dad and James have been at it for the last hour. Listen....are you sure you want them to be doing this?" she asked sarcastically.

I laughed, "Yes, they'll be fine. How far along are they?"

"They're about a quarter of the way. This kitchen is huge. Why do you need such a huge kitchen??" she asked.

I snickered, "I dunno. You know how much I enjoy cooking. I figured, even if the rest of the house was small, the kitchen would have to be big."

"You...are a nerd. I'll see you when you get here. Hurry, your father is driving me nuts." she mocked my mother's tone again.

I laughed, "Ok ok!"

As I hung up the phone I noticed the rain had slowed quite a bit. It was now just mildly spitting out. I decided that it was safe to finish my move now.

I gathered the remaining boxes and quickly loaded them into my car. I had some difficulties getting the last box in, but after some rearranging and some incessant cramming, I was able to fit them all in. As I closed the door to my car, I looked up at the house.

This is it. I thought to myself. 4 and a half years. Gone.

I walked around the house to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything. I made sure all the windows were closed, and turned off all the lights. Stepped out onto the porch and locked the door.

Goodbye.

"Wow! The floor is looking good!" I said excitedly as I walked into the kitchen.

My father turned and looked at me. He was sweating profusely. He grinned, "This isn't easy you know."

I laughed, "What's the matter? To much for you old man?"

He tossed a screwdriver at me. I caught it, "Careful now. You don't want to make a hole in the wall. Then you'll have to fix that as well."

He snickered.

My sister walked into the kitchen, "Ohhh. Look who decided to show up?"

"Hey." I stuck my tongue out at her, "How's the organizing coming?"

She frowned, "Well....I'm not sure where some of the boxes go. There's a box marked..."

"HEY!" I cut her off before she could finish. I knew what she was going to say. I grabbed her by the arm and dragged her into the living room.

She laughed. I just glared at her with mock irritation on my face.

"Jennifer, that was not funny." I scolded.

She cackled, "Yes it was!"

I bursted out laughing, "Come on! Like dad needs to know I have a box full of sex toys."

We laughed and began sorting out the pile of boxes in my living room.

"I wasn't sure if you wanted me to start putting your kitchen supplies away yet so I haven't touched them at all." Jen said.

"That's fine. I want to finish up the cupboards before I started putting that stuff away." I smiled.

Jen stared at me. It was beginning to make me feel a little uncomfortable.

"What?" I asked.

She just kept staring.

"Whaaat?" I whined.

"Are you ok?" she asked genuinely concerned.

"I'm fine." I smiled.

She looked at me as if concentrating really hard.

I nervously laughed, "I'm fine. Really."

She stared at me for another moment and then continued sifting through boxes. "Alright."

A couple of hours had passed and I was getting hungry.

"Does anyone want anything to eat? I'm going to grab some dinner. I'm starved." I shouted out into the house.

We all agreed on some take out from a restaurant close by. Living near downtown was beginning to have it's benefits.

"Ok. I'll be back in about a half hour." I shouted as I stepped out of the door.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I walked along one of the main streets downtown towards a small restaurant near the end of the strip of stores. I walked past a small store and something in the window caught my eye. There was a painting in the window. It was fairly large. There was something about this painting. It was a portrait of a man. The painting looked half done, but the emotion in the man's face was evident. There was a sadness in his eyes.

I must have been standing there staring for quite some time. I didn't realize the group of people walking towards me. Someone bumped into me. I quickly snapped out of whatever was wrong with me and I caught my balance.

"Sorry!" I said as I looked up.

"No problem." he replied.

I couldn't stop staring. We both stood there staring at each other. It was as if the entire world had stopped. His face looked familiar, but I couldn't place it.

Someone cleared their throat.

"Oh uh. Sorry." I said as I blushed and turned to walk into the store.

I didn't look back, but in the store was a mirror. I was able to see that 4 other guys were obviously irritated as the gentleman who bumped into me continued to stare. Who was he? I know him from somewhere. Or at least I've seen him before.

They finally managed to convince him to walk away. I turned towards the window and watched them walk away.

They all look familiar. I thought to myself.

I shook my head and walked over to the person behind the cash register.

"Good afternoon sir." she smiled.

"Good afternoon." I responded also smiling, "I was wondering if I could take a look at the painting in the window.

"Certainly." she made her way to the window and pulled out the portrait and placed it on an easel nearby.

I stared at it. His eyes seduced me. They made my emotions stir. I quickly fell into it's trap again.

"Sir?" the woman waved her hand in front of my face.

"Oh! Uh..sorry." I laughed nervously, "What is it called?"

"Well it's actually not finished. Rumor has it, the artist disappeared before he could finish it. It was nicknamed 'Incomplete'."

"Disappeared?" I was intrigued.

"I'm not really sure. That's just what I've been told." she was a bit embarrassed.

I stared at it for a moment before asking, "How much?"

"$269" she smiled.

That's a bit steep. I thought to myself, I should really be spending my money on other things I need for the house. Necessities.

"I'll take it." I didn't even realize I had said it till she was ringing it up at the cash register.

"That will be $314.73 please." she smiled. I handed her my credit card.

"Sign here please." she handed me a pen. I signed.

"Here you are. Have a great day sir." she handed me the painting wrapped in brown paper.

As I walked out of the store, I looked down at the painting I was holding under my arm. Did I just spend $315 on a painting?

I turned and walked towards the restaurant. I walked in and straight up to the counter. I placed my order and the waitress said it would be about 10 minutes. I sat down at a table nearby. I was looking over the receipt when I began to feel like I was being watched. I looked up and there he was. The gentleman I had bumped into. He was staring at me. At first it felt a little creepy, but then I realize that I was staring back. He half smiled. I found myself blushing and smiling as well.

"Your food sir." the waitress placed a large bag in front of me. I picked up the painting, picked up the bag and started walking towards the exit. I stopped and looked back one more time. He smiled again. As I turned to walk out the door I chuckled to myself as one of the other guys sitting with him smacked him upside the head and appeared to be lecturing him on something.

I decided to cut through one of the alley's to get to the parking lot. It was rather narrow and kind of creepy. I began to regret making that decision. I started to walk faster when I heard someone call out from behind me. I was hesitant to turn around so I started to walk faster.

"Are you deaf fool? I said STOP!" the man demanded.

I stopped and slowly turned around. There were 3 men standing in the alley. They were about 10 feet away. They were all wearing hooded sweaters.

"What's up?" I asked nervously.

All 3 of them laughed, "Nothing man. What's up with you?"

"Just heading home." I answered, "So I really should get going. Food is getting cold. Later." and with that I spun around and started heading towards the parking lot again.

"HEY! I don't remember saying you could leave." one of the men shouted. I froze.

"Now turn around." one of the other's demanded.

So I did. At first I didn't see it. Or maybe I had and I just ignored it. I dropped my bag of food and portrait and started running towards the parking lot. I was trying to get my keys out of my pocket when it happened. To be honest, I don't remember hearing it, but I felt it. The next thing I knew, I had become one with the concrete. I didn't see the gun.

I didn't hear the gun.

I could feel the steel. Everything went black.

I remember hearing sirens, so I opened my eyes. I could barely feel someone's arms around me. I tried to look up to see who it was, but his face was blurry. I couldn't tell. I tried to speak but I couldn't. He brought his face closer to mine. It was him. The man from the restaurant. The man from outside the store.

He was trying to talk to me. His lips were moving but I couldn't hear him. The sirens were loud. Everything began to fade. Everything was black again.
