"And listen later on this week for more info on how you can see *Nsync live, free with the Z morning crew." Erin Davis, the Z95.3 DJ, announced over the radio.
"How is Erin doing?" I wondered out loud, "I am happy for her success."
Erin and were students together at Dalhousie University. She was a journalism major but in our freshman year, we had the same English, Psych, and Russian Literature classes. We became friends after I started tutoring her in Russian Lit. She figured that I might have a better grasp on the subject because I am Russian.
She was also dying to ask me if I was related to the Czars of Russia because my last name was Alexandrovitch. I explained to her that Alexandrovitch just meant son of Alexander. We had a good laugh over this which broke the ice and we have been friends ever since.
I haven't talked to her for a couple months because so much had been going on. Upon graduation, Erin landed a job as a DJ at Z95.3, Vancouver's top pop radio station.
Erin had just finished her set as I pulled into the driveway at work.
"Hey, Buffy." I said as I walked in the door.
"Thanks for the cookies. They were great!" she exclaimed.
"No problem. How is everyone today?"
"Not too bad at all. Kent hasn't stopped listening to that *Nsync CD since you brought it in."
"I'm glad that he is enjoying it." I replied. "They are coming to Vancouver soon, you know."
"Really? Are you going?" Buffy asked
"Yeah. My friend Kristina and I are going."
"I wonder if there is someway that we could take Kent. How much are the tickets?"
"About 70 bucks, but our tickets were 90 because we are on the floor."
"That is a little pricey for our budget. I will have to talk to Cathy about it. Maybe she can find the money somewhere." She said, referring to Cathy, our boss and owner of the company.
"Let me talk to my friend, Erin, first." I said " She is a DJ at Z95.3 and they get a lot of free tickets to give away as prizes and promotions. Maybe if I explained the situation, she can get him free tickets."
"That would be great. If not, I will talk to Cathy and see what we can do. Give me a call and let me know."
"Sure. Have a good evening and see you tomorrow."
After work, I was thinking if Erin's bosses or the *Nsync management team could only see how Kent responded to the music he would get some free tickets for sure.
Maybe this would even make one of those feel good public interest stories for the company newsletter. I picked up my cell and dialed Erin's number.
"Hey, Erin! It's Krys." I said into the phone
"Hey, man, how's it going?" Erin asked
"Long time, no talk. I'm pretty good, how about you?"
"Pretty good, where are you?"
"Just driving over the Alex Fraser bridge on my way to see you." I said "How long will you be at the office?"
"Another couple of hours at least. Amber Lee, Buzz and I are getting the morning set for tomorrow ready."
"Great! See you in about a half hour."
"I will let security know that we are expecting you."
"Okay. See you soon. Bye."
As I got off the Alex Fraser, I put the top down and my sunglasses on as I steered my car towards Richmond and the Z95 studios. Matchbox Twenty blasted out of the stereo. About 30 minutes later, I pulled my silver Mercedes into the parking lot, identified myself with security, and got directed into the building.
"Hey Erin, Buzz, Amber Lee." I said as I walked into the board room.
"Hey Krys," They chorused as they looked up from their work
"You guys up for some dinner?"
"Your treat?" Buzz asked.
"Of course," I responded.
"Let's do it!" Amber exclaimed happy to be getting a break
"I made reservations at Wild Rice."
"Water, please," I told the waitress.
"Lemon Snapple," Amber Lee ordered.
"Tea for me," said Erin.
Buzz looked at the waitress, "Triple Vodka Paralyzer."
"Whoa, a little heavy there Buzz!" Erin commented.
"It gives me a creative edge. Besides, it's Vodka. Krys understands," Buzz replied.
"Yes, but I am Russian, and you are British. There's a difference. Besides, I would never drink before work, or if I was going to drive."
"You are driving me back to the studio, so it's all good."
I laughed at his logic, "anyway, I have a favor to ask."
"Butter us up with dinner first so that we can't say no. Good plan!" Erin joked.
"I thought so too," I smiled innocently. "I have this client named Kent and you should see how he responds to the music of *Nsync. He can't talk and he is in a wheelchair but the reaction he has is amazing.. He rocks in his chair like he is dancing and his smile just gets bigger as the CD goes on. The only problem, of course, is that the government doesn't budget for things like this. So I was wondering if you had any spare tickets kicking around the studio?" I looked up hopefully and played with my water glass.
"Can we meet him?" Amber asked.
"I think that can be arranged" I said.
"Who is going to accompany him?" Buzz asked.
"Well, my friend Kristina and I are going to the concert, and I thought we could possibly just bring him along and just give up our seats for wherever they can accommodate us."
"Well, I have an idea." Erin said "If you and Kristina are willing to give up your seats for a radio give-away contest, then I think we couple possibly replace them with three new tickets along with sound check and backstage passes. I will have to double check with their management because of the wheelchair, but I don't think that it will me a problem."
My jaw dropped, I was completely stunned. "Are you nuts?"
Amber and Buzz just laughed at me. I was completely and utterly floored. Buffy was going to freak. Kristina was going to die. She has had this incredibly huge crush on JC Chasez for years, and she would finally get the chance to meet him. I don't thinks she ever imagined it happening in real life or so soon.
"Hello... Kristina are you there?" I said into the silence on the other end of the line.
"I...can't...breathe" Steena responded, gasping.
"I'm sorry. Would you like me to call Erin back and cancel the arrangement?" I asked sarcastically.
"If you do that, then bad things will happen to you." She stated in all seriousness "How did this happen? And just so you know for future reference, not breathing after news like that IS a good thing."
"Well I was talking to Buffy..."
"You know that Buffy is a fictitional character, right?" Kristina interrupted.
"Not this Buffy."
I regaled the entire situation leading up to acquiring the backstage passes.
Both Steena and I were big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans. In fact, I think that all of our friends were.
"So you are willing to give up your ticket for the backstage pass?" I asked, just to make sure.
"I am insulted that you would even ask me that question." Steena countered.
"I will call Erin tomorrow and let her know that it is a go."
"I can't believe that this is happening."
"Listen, I am going to let you go so that you can catch your breath and watch every *Nsync video that you own while I go call Buffy and let her know what is happening, okay?"
"Buffy." She repeated, followed by a chuckle as I hung up the phone. I grabbed my address book so that I could look up Buffy's home number. I knew that she would want to hear from me instead of waiting to tell her at work in the morning.
"Are you nuts?!" Buffy yelled into the phone when I had finished telling her the news.
"That is exactly what I said when they told me," I replied.
"The only thing is that the crew would like to meet Kent. So, if you would just give me permission for that, then I will call Erin and arrange a time."
"No problem. I will pass this by Cathy tomorrow."
"Great! See you tomorrow Buffy."
"Bye."
I dialed the Z private number. I was very glad that I did not have to get through on the Zlines. It is impossible, especially when there are contests going on.
"Hello, is Erin there? This is Krystofyr Alexandrovitch calling." I said to the secretary. "Yes, I can hold. Thank you."
"Erin here."
"Hey, Erin. The meeting with Kent is a go." I told her.
"I have another favor to ask."
"What is that?"
"Well, I called the boys' management to get clearance for the wheelchair, which, by the way, we got. Here is the favor: A couple of the guys, JC and Lance, actually, want to meet Kent and the people that will be accompanying him. They want to fly out the day before the concert and just hang out with y'all." Erin said, trying to get me to laugh with the use of southern slang that I would often unconsciously use.
"You're so funny, Erin!" Sarcasm is a good coping tool.
"I am not joking." She said into the phone.
"Well...umm...okay, sure. Why not? That shouldn't be a problem." I said, still a little stunned.
"Good. I will let them know that it won't be a problem. Oh, yeah! Since they don't exactly know Surrey very well, can you maybe draw them a map so they know how to get there?"
"Why don't I just pick them up myself and drive them there?"
"Possibly because your car only has two seats." Erin said sarcastically.
"I also own a Sunfire. It seats five and has loads of trunk space."
"Really? I didn't know that. When did you get that?"
"About a year ago for Christmas."
"Okay. Well, I'll call them back to let them know, and see if they would like to arrange that. You know celebrities. They might NEED a limo. Their whole world might crash in around them if they don't get one!"
"Why don't you just give them all of my contact info and we can arrange it?"
"Well, I was going to do that but I didn't want to give it out without your permission."
"Thanks for that, but now you have my permission, so feel free to give it to them."
"Will do!"
"Thanks, Erin.. For all of this. Say 'hi' to the rest of the crew for me, and I will talk to y'all later." The use of y'all earlier had sunk in and I wanted to make Erin laugh so I used it.
Erin laughed before responding. "You're welcome, and I'll tell them that for you. I'll call you next week, and then we can meet Kent."
"Okay, see you later!"
I clicked off the phone and then let out a gasp for air, not realizing that I had been holding my breath. I was going to meet *Nsync! How weird is that?
