"Saturday morning, Peyton, Richard, and Jaiden were on duty at the hospital since they had an entire floor of patients. Mom and Dad Riley were to have lunch with their sons while Dale and Charlie watched the children.

At 11:30 that morning, they began walking to the hospital since it was nearby. They went straight to the cafeteria when they arrived at St. Jude's and had a seat outside the diner until Richard, Peyton, and Jaiden came down. Ten minutes after they took a seat in the hallway, their sons came walking down the hall sporting the biggest smiles possible. Dad Riley looked at his sons and said, "Wow, you guys sure do look chipper this morning."

Richard looked at his dad and replied, "Dad, we have had such a good morning; if it were any better, we'd be walking on air." "That good?" "Yes, sir, every patient we have seen this morning has progressed in every way possible." "Do you reckon it is because they have good doctors?" "No, sir, I believe it is because they have great doctors and because Hashem has guided our minds and hands in everything we have done."

"Did Seth come with you two?" "Look behind you."

When Richard turned around, Seth was standing there with the biggest grin Richard had ever seen him have. They hugged each other, after which Seth hugged Peyton and Jaiden. Then, they went to the doctor's private cafeteria, took a seat, and gave the server their lunch requests. Everybody got the baked chicken and an assortment of vegetables that Jaiden had recommended. By the time lunch was over, everybody was sufficiently stuffed.

The two brothers and Jaiden took their parents up to the fourth floor, where they were working, and introduced them to the nursing staff. Stories were swapped back and forth, and everyone had a good time laughing with each other.

The machinery they worked with was in the hallway, so Richard explained to his parents what each machine did to benefit their patients. Then, as they walked down the hallway, a patient saw the doctors and yelled for them to come into the room. The little boy in the room wanted to introduce them to his dad since neither had met each other. Peyton told the dad he was glad to finally meet him, but they had to run since Richard's and his parents were in the hallway.

The little boy asked if he could meet them, and Peyton made sure it was OK with the parents. Mom, Dad, would you mind stepping in the room for a minute; the patient would like to meet you."

Mom and Dad Riley walked into the room. Peyton said, "I need a signed release to introduce y'all, and since I don't have one, you may introduce yourselves. Folks, this is Richard's and my Dad, Dr. Jim Riley, and my mom, Phyllis Riley. This good-looking teen is our younger brother, Seth. Dad is a veterinarian, and Seth will be heading to the University of Florida in January to become a veterinarian specializing in oceanic marine life."

"DR. and Mrs. Riley, I am Daniel Bloom, and this is my wife, Maddie. The young man lying in bed is our son, Justin."

"Justin is eleven. He started feeling poorly about a month ago, and when his doctor did blood tests, we discovered he had leukemia. He's been in St. Jude for the past three weeks, and his progress has been remarkable. All three of your sons have been doctors for Justin. Dr. Richard did the initial workup when we got here, and Drs. Peyton and Jaiden have prescribed and administered the chemo. All three of your boys are great doctors, and I can only see them getting even better as they get some experience under their belts."

"Mr. Bloom, thank you for your kind words; they make our hearts swell with pride." "Dr..." "Please, call me Jim." "Jim, Maddie, and I feel like your sons, and this hospital has given us our son back. He is so much better than he was three weeks ago. We have one to two weeks to go, and the tests will be repeated. If the leukemia is in remission, we get to go home."

"Daniel, I have every belief that Justin's cancer will be in remission – and it won't come back. Where are you three from?" "We're from Hartford, Connecticut." "That is a good thing. All three of my sons will return to Erie, Pennsylvania, where they already have a pediatric practice. In conjunction with the Erie Medical Center, St. Jude's is building a branch of St. Jude's in Erie. Richard, Peyton, and Jaiden will be the chief physicians in their specialty at the hospital. They wanted to have this done so patients in the northeastern US could be closer to home."

"That is awesome, Jim. Erie is only an hour and a half drive from Buffalo; it will be a godsend to us when that branch opens."

"What do Jaiden's parents do?" "His mother is an emergency medicine doctor in Virginia. Her practice is large and busy. Jaiden's dad was a doctor here at St. Jude's before being killed in a plane crash in South Africa while on a sabbatical medical mission. So our sons are here in honor of Jaiden's father. I don't know if you know it or not, but this branch of the hospital is named after Jaiden's dad."

"I didn't know that. I will have to read up on it." What do you do in Buffalo, Daniel?" I am a graduate professor of Sociology at Buffalo State College." "Awesome. Perhaps a good subject for a group project would be a study of the efficacy and effects on the US's northeastern quadrant by a branch of St. Jude's being in that area." "Jim, that's an interesting idea; I will look into Saint Jude's program once it is well established. At least I will know who to contact to get that study started."

"It was nice meeting you folks. We should be going so Seth doesn't tire Justin out too much. Here's my business card. Keep in touch and let us know how Justin is progressing." "We'll do that, Jim. Thanks for stopping by and raising Justin's spirits." "You're welcome, Daniel; Take care."

"They're friendly people, Phyllis. But, of course, we'll have to pray that Justin's leukemia goes into remission and never resurfaces." "Yes, we will, Jim. Do you know where Seth went?" I see Peyton outside; I'll ask him if he knows."

"Peyton, do you know where Seth got off to?" "Yes, sir. There is a Jewish chapel on the first floor, and he said he needed to visit there for a few minutes." "I wonder why?" "Dad, think about it. Seth has the biggest heart of anybody I know outside of Jaiden and Richard."

"Peyton, He probably went to daven for Justin." "That would be my guess, Dad." "We're going to check on him, and once he is finished in the chapel, we'll walk back to the house." "OK, Dad, we'll see you at the house around 6 this evening."

Jim and Phyllis took the elevator to the first floor and walked to the chapel area. When they peered into the window, they saw Seth inside with his hands raised, palms up, and praying. Not wanting to interrupt him, they sat on a bench outside the chapel and waited for him to complete his prayers. Fifteen minutes later, Seth emerged from the chapel with red, swollen eyes.

"Dad, I knew I was blessed and fortunate to have you, mom, Richard, Peyton, and Jaiden, but I didn't realize how much until I met Justin. Life became far more meaningful to me today. I had things rough until you and mom gave me a new life. But Justin has had a far worse time than I think I ever did."

"Seth, you have a good heart, and your mom and I are very proud of you." "As they headed to Peyton's home, they walked hand-in-hand with Seth between his mom and Dad.

"Peyton, would you please go put something else on; I know the boys are in bed, but you walking around like that is going to cause me to jump your bones!"

"Sweetheart, that sounds like fun to me." "Normally it would be, lover, but I am so tired tonight I think I would fall asleep in the middle of making love." "Jaiden, I have an idea: why don`t we go to bed early, watch a little night-time TV and cuddle until we fall asleep?" "Babe, I think that is an excellent idea!"

The two went to their bedroom, got undressed, and crawled into bed. Peyton sat up, as did Jaiden, and placed the right side of his back on the left side of Jaiden's chest. Jaiden held Peyton while giving him loving pecks on the top of his head. His right hand was continuously rubbing Peyton's chest until they laid down to go to sleep.

The next day, they awoke, showered, and got breakfast ready for the children. When Dale and Charley walked into the kitchen, they were surprised to see oatmeal with maple syrup, orange juice, and milk prepared for the children. For the adults, Jaiden made coffee Dale's way, and when Dale tasted the coffee, he high-fived Jaiden and said, "my brother, you have arrived; this coffee is excellent!" Finally, the dads got the babies taken care of and put them back to bed before Granny and Ginny arrived.

"Boys, where are my grandchildren?" "Ginny, they had breakfast and then insisted on going back to bed. They said they wanted you and Granny to prop your feet up on the coffee table and watch your morning shows. The dishes are in the dishwasher, and the table and the counters have been wiped clean."

"Jaiden, did y'all leave anything for Granny and me to do?" "Yes, mam. We left the television remote on the end table for you to pick up and cut on your morning television shows. The babies should sleep another hour or two."

"You boys are a mess; get on to work before I spank all four of you!" "Yes, mam, but we want our good morning kiss before we go." So, Granny and Ginny kissed each of the guys on the cheek, and they told each other they loved them.

"Geraldine, Ezra, and I couldn't have children, but if we could have, I would have prayed they turned out just like Jaiden, Peyton, Dale, and Charley." I understand, Martha. I am thankful that my boys are just like them, and they love those four like they are blood brothers." "You're fortunate, Geraldine, very fortunate!" "You know, Martha, I don't think we are fortunate as much as we are blessed because of our ministry to the church and community." "Amen to that."

The babies slept for an hour before they started waking up and stirring around in their beds. The ladies took care of the babies' needs and then took them outside to play on the playsets their dads built. Granny and Ginny had their hands over their mouths to keep the children from seeing them laughing at them. The boys were having a great time playing together, but they kept a watchful eye on Alaina Noelle. If she wanted to play with a specific toy, swing on a particular swing, or slide down her favorite slide, the boys very carefully moved out of her way. There is no doubt that all nine boys know Alaina Noelle is the boss, and they don't want to take a chance of her popping one of them in the mouth when she gets mad.

When the clock chimes sounded at ten that morning, the babies started climbing the steps to go inside for a nap. They played hard, and they were tired. Ginny and Granny welcomed the nap time so they could prepare lunch for the babies.

"This is Martha Stuart; is Dr. Riley available?" "Just a moment, Ginny, let me get Jim on the phone.

"Good morning, Ginny; to what do I owe the honor of your call?" "Dr. Riley, I know you have been thinking hard about how to get Peyton back for the broccoli stunt he pulled on you. Granny and I just wanted to let you know we are going to feed the babies broccoli salad for lunch. Then, I am going to put a note in Peyton's and Jaiden's top dresser drawer that is going to say, "Touche', boys! Love, Dad."

"Ginny, remind me the next time Phyllis and I are up there to take you, Granny, and your husbands out to the fanciest restaurant in Memphis. We will do that, Dr. Riley. I will let you know what happens after the boys find the note. I'm sure they will probably call you before I do. We're making meatloaf, baby Lima beans, black-eyed peas, and broccoli salad for lunch. Then, around seven this evening, you can smile since you'll know what is happening."

"Ginny, you and Granny are crown jewels!" "I don't know about that, Dr. Riley; we are, however, on your side in this issue. Let me know how the boys react to the touché note." "I will, Granny. Thanks for making my day!" "You're welcome, Dr. Riley."

When Dale and Charley came in from work, Ginny told them they had a note in the top drawer of their dresser. So, Dale went upstairs, got, and read the message, and went back downstairs and told Granny and Ginny that they wouldn't tell Jaiden and Peyton about the scheme. That's when Ginny said she would give their children some Beano if they wanted her to. Charley said it was OK not to and that Peyton deserved what he would get because of what he had done to his dad after all his dad had done for him, Richard, and Jaiden. Dale, Ginny, and Granny smiled, took a sip of coffee, and didn't say another word.

Charley and Dale didn't say anything about the plan when Peyton and Jaiden got home. Then, about an hour after dinner, Peyton wrinkled his nose and looked around to see what was causing the horrid smell in the house. Mark went over to his dad, held up his arms, and let Peyton know he wanted to sit in his dad's lap. When Peyton picked up Mark, the boy let out a big, loud fart. As the smell wafted up to Peyton's and Jaiden's noses, Peyton suddenly knew where the smell was coming from.

Peyton put his hand over his mouth and nose as he looked at Jaiden and let out a muffled, "Damn! They're doing it again!" It took everything he and Jaiden had to stay in the room with their sons. Dale and Charley took the easy way out; they went out on the deck and sat by themselves.

There was still some sunshine outside, so Jaiden and Peyton took all the children out to play - and hopefully run off some of their flatulence. They knew one thing for sure: they weren't staying inside and enduring what they had been smelling since shortly after getting home.

The children played outside until they tired themselves out. Then the dads took the children upstairs, bathed them, and put them to bed. Jaiden and Peyton went to their room to shower so they could relax, and when Peyton opened their top dresser drawer, he found a note that said, "Touche, son!" He said, "damn, I knew it!" "You knew what, sweetheart?" "This note I just found in the dresser drawer says, "Touche, love Dad."

"Hello, Dad. I found a note in my dresser drawer that says, "Touche, son! Love, Dad." "Peyton, I swear, I don't know how that note got in your dresser drawer." "Yeah, right, Dad, I'm sure you don't! All I am going to say is that you won this salvo. We have every window in the house open, fans blowing in and out of the house, and a lot of Melon room deodorizer we are spraying every five minutes. Even so, it smells like a melon ball crapped in the house." "Well, son, I'm sorry, but I didn't have anything to do with that problem cropping up."

"Dad, either way, I have learned my lesson about doing something like I did when you and mom were here, and I will never do it again." "Son, I certainly hope not; the smell in that van was unbelievable."

A few minutes later, Jaiden's phone rang with his mom calling to rag him about how his house was smelling. "Mom, it is horrible! We have all the windows open, fans blowing in and out of the house, melon spray we are spraying every five minutes, and it still smells like a honeydew melon crapped in the house." "Jaiden, didn't you and Peyton realize that Jim was the king of getting even when Peyton rolled up and locked the van windows after the children had eaten broccoli salad?"

"I did, Mom, and you can rest assured I will be reminding him of that fact quite frequently from now on. Before the children went to bed, I gave all of them a drop of Beano. The new law of the house is that the children WILL NOT eat baby lima beans, black-eyed peas, and broccoli, in any form, during the same meal."

Jaiden's mom was doing her usual, clapping her hands and laughing loudly at Jaiden's and Peyton's misfortune. When his mom ended the call, Jaiden looked at Peyton and said, "Babe, I know without a doubt who engineered our little problem tonight!" "Dale, will you please come into the den for a minute?" "Coming."

"Do you know how to prepare that broccoli salad the children love so much?" "I do, Jaiden, but we don't have the ingredients." "What do you need?" "Sweet cream, broccoli, white raisins, and a few carrots." "OK, I'll bring it home after work tomorrow. I want you to prepare the broccoli salad, and we are going to feed it to the children before we go to work on Thursday morning." "Jaiden, do you think we should do that?" "No, but it shouldn't have been done today either. After Thursday morning, I bet it won't happen again. You better not say a word to anybody about the plan. To make sure everything goes as planned, I am taking the Beano with me on Thursday morning."

On Thursday morning, the children got a serving of oatmeal with syrup and a cup of milk with a large broccoli salad. Then, when Jaiden and Peyton walked out the door to go to work, Jaiden slipped the bottle of Beano into his pocket, smiled, got into his car, and drove to the hospital. He thought he had pulled one over on Ginny and Granny. However, Ginny knew Jaiden well enough to anticipate a payback. So, she brought a bottle of Beano to the Riley-Reynolds-Jacobs-Anderson home when she and Granny walked over to care for the children.

When Jaiden and Peyton got home that evening, they asked how the day had gone with the children. "Jaiden, I thought you were easy to raise, but your boys have you beat. They are perfect little angels for Granny and me, and so are Charley's and Dale's children, especially Alaina Noelle." Jaiden looked at Peyton and didn't say a word.

When they had gone upstairs to change into some comfortable clothing, Jaiden told Peyton, "They had to have known what we did. Ginny had to have brought a bottle of Beano with her this morning." "Babe, the left-over broccoli salad in the fridge was a dead giveaway." "Crap; sweetheart, I didn't think of that." "I didn't either, Jaiden, until after we got to the hospital." "Peyton, I hate to admit it, but that was a double touché in one week!" "Yep, Jaiden, we've been had!"

"Peyton, did you get a note from Leon Pettigrew this morning?" "I did. Why?" "I got one too. See if mine is just like yours." Peyton read Jaiden's note and told Jaiden they were different and appeared to be heartfelt thank you notes forwarded to them by the District Attorney's Office. "Peyton, I never in a million years would have expected a note like that." "Me either, Jaiden."

Jaiden decided that he didn't care if Leon had his cell number or not; he was going to call and talk to Leon to see how he was doing. "Leon, this is Dr. Jaiden. Thank you for the note I received this morning; it meant a lot to me. How are you doing in your treatment?" "Dr. Jaiden, I thought it would be something I would hate, but I am actually loving the therapy."

"I am learning to handle my frustrations positively, so I don't project my anger and disappointments onto someone else." "Leon, that is awesome. Your voice sounds calmer and more self-assured, and that tells me you are working hard to change."

"I am, Dr. Jaiden. If you and Dr. Peyton hadn't done what you did in court, I'd probably be sitting in jail somewhere, getting angrier than I already was. But, instead, both of my parents are attending counseling with me, and we are mending our relationship."

"Leon, you have no idea how happy I am to hear that. I know a couple of other guys who said the same thing to Dr. Peyton and me. I'll tell you what, when you get a pass to go out for dinner one day, let me know, and Dr. Peyton and I will take you out for a good meal." "Dr. Jaiden, why would you and Dr. Peyton do that for me after what I did to the two of you?"

"Leon, you are working hard in your recovery, and we think you deserve to have something nice to reward you for that." "Dr. Jaiden, I don't know what to say." "Then say, `when I get a pass, I will call you.' When you do, we'll take you out for a good lunch or dinner, your choice." "OK, doc, I promise. When I get a pass, I will call you." "Good. We'll be looking forward to your call."

"Jaiden, who called?" "He didn't call; I called him. He was Leon, the guy you told he didn't want to swing at me. He is doing great in his treatment program, and Peyton and I plan to take him out to eat when he gets a treatment pass." "Jaiden, sometimes I wonder if you and Peyton aren't too good to some people." "Charley, the way I look at it is that we need to make an initial effort in situations to make things better at the moment."

"We also need to do what is necessary to improve people's lives so that 20 years down the road, they have successful lives and happy families." "You know, I never thought of it that way; thanks for cluing me in." "You're welcome, bro."

"Good morning, Jasper; how's it going?" "Things are a little rough at home right now. I'm sorry if I came across as depressed or worried; that's not fair to you or to anyone else."

"Jasper, if you need to talk something out, Dale and I are more than willing to listen and help you find a solution to whatever is troubling you. Dale is really good at helping people with their problems, especially children. He and I helped people back in Erie when someone asked us to do that. Google our names, and you'll see a little of what I mean."

Jasper went home that night and Googled Dale's and Charley's names. When he read about their work with Erie's school system along with Jaiden and Peyton, his eyes almost popped out of his head. Then he read about the schools named after the four guys and about the Nobel Prize in Education. Jasper thought to himself: "Damn! I knew Charley and Dale were very intelligent, and that their work was exemplary, but I never would have imagined that about them."

The next day at work, Jasper looked at Charley and said, "Charley, I Googled what you told me to. You and Dale are amazing people." "Maybe unique, Jasper, but amazing, I'm not so sure; we just do our best to help people to feel and be better human beings. And, by the way, please don't broadcast what you read to anyone; Dale and I just want to be ordinary people; fanfare makes us incredibly uneasy."

"Would you and Sydney like to come to the house Saturday evening and have dinner with us? We can feed the children and then let them play in the backyard so we can sit on the deck and talk. Perhaps we can talk about how our brothers and we live our lives and possibly give you some ideas that will help things improve at home." "Thanks, Charley; I'll ask Sydney tonight and let you know tomorrow." Great! When you taste Dale's cooking, you'll wonder why he doesn't own a chain of gourmet restaurants."

After the guys got home, Charley told Dale, Jaiden, and Peyton that he invited Jasper and his wife, Sydney, to dinner Saturday night to talk and help the co-worker with some problems. Then he asked Dale if he could prepare prime rib, rosin baked potatoes, and grilled asparagus. "Dale, Jasper is supposed to talk to Sydney tonight and will let me know tomorrow." "Charley, we need to get the prime rib tomorrow so it can marinate before I cook it." Jaiden said, "I can take care of that on the way home tomorrow, Dale; I'll have to check where to get the pine rosin for the baked potatoes." "Jaiden, I can get it at the garden supply store east of town." "OK, Charley. You get the pine rosin, and I'll get the other things Dale will need."

Jasper told Charley that he and Sydney could have dinner with Dale and him on Saturday afternoon, so Charley set the time at six Saturday evening.

Friday arrived, and the guys decided to watch a movie after the children went to bed. Jaiden and Dale looked at Dekkoo and chose the film Solo. The movie lasted about an hour and a half and left the guys in a rather amorous mood. So, they decided to turn in for the night and engage in some `physical' exercises.

Although all the lights in the house were off, lightning coming from the two bedrooms was lighting up the front and back bedrooms and flashing across the yards. Yells of `yippy-i-yea" were emanating from Dale's and Charley's room, and yes, yes, and oh yes was sounding from Peyton's and Jaiden's room.

The following day when the guys came down for breakfast, they were all smiles. They were tired-looking but had smiles from ear to ear; plus, they were clinging to each other like syrup on waffles. Treating each other like syrup on waffles was appro pro after the night they each had. After breakfast, Dale put the prime rib in the oven to slow cook all day. Dinner that evening was going to be amazing!

At six that evening, the front doorbell rang, and Charley answered the door and invited Jasper and Sydney inside. "If you guys will go through the doorway on the right, I will introduce you to our brothers in the den."

"Jaiden, Peyton, this is Jasper and Sydney Browning. Jasper is a co-worker of Dale and me." "Jaiden and Peyton shook hands with Jasper and Sydney and said how nice it was to meet them. When the children came running up to Jasper and his wife, Charley said, "And these ten little people checking you two out are our ten children." Sydney was like everyone else who met the children as she said, "Ten Children! In one house! How in the world do you manage that many children in one house." "Dale spoke up and said they didn't have to manage the children because if they got out of line, the little girl they were looking at would make all her brothers tow-a-line; just watch them. When the boys start getting too rowdy, Alaina Noelle will yell no, and all the boys will sit in the middle of the floor."

Sure enough, about ten minutes later, they heard Alaina Noelle yell no, and they started laughing as the boys quickly sat in the middle of the room. Finally, Sydney asked, "Charley, how does that little girl do that?" "Sydney, the boys were protective of Alaina Noelle and were smothering her with brotherly protection. She finally got tired of the boys `protecting' her and popped Nathan in the mouth. You could have heard him scream a block away. Jaiden was sitting on the deck watching the children playing in the backyard when Dale and I ran outside to see what the problem was. He told Dale and me to sit back and watch, that Alaina Noelle had enough of the boys not letting her do anything, and she put a stop to it; they have been scared of her ever since." "Guys, that is hilarious; what an interesting home life you must have," and Peyton replied, "Sydney, it gets exciting at times."

Dale let everyone know dinner was ready, so the dads got the children in their high chairs. Dale and Charley fixed them a plate of everything the adults were eating except their food was chopped up in the food processor.

Jasper and Sydney were astounded at the manners the babies had at the table. They ate their food without making a mess and without much talking. Jaiden slipped Sydney a note telling her to ask Nathan if she could have a bite of his steak. Sydney smiled and asked, "Nathan, may I have a bite of your steak?" Nathan put some meat on a spoon and handed it to Sydney. Then Jaiden said, "Watch this. Nathan, may daddy have a bite of your steak?" Sydney and Jasper laughed when Nathan gave his dad a sharp `NO!" in reply. Peyton told Jasper and Sydney "Nathan is definitely a lady's man. Whenever a lady has asked for a bite of his food, he always gives them a taste; let a man ask him for a taste, and the answer is always no." The table cleared, and the dishes in the dishwasher, the adults took the children outside to play so they could sit and talk on the deck. After an hour or so, the children were ready to go inside, have their baths, and go to bed.

"Jasper, if you and Sydney want to see something hilarious, come with us and watch the children get their baths. The showers in their rooms are big and open, and they love to play like they are outside in the rain; a couple of the boys play hard to get, and bath time turns into a game of chase."

Towards the end of the evening, the houseguests appeared relaxed and acting like the lovebirds they needed to and should be. However, Monday would be the day Charley and Dale would find out if the suggestions they and Jaiden and Peyton made turned the tide in Jasper and Sydney's relationship.
