"Dr. Riley-Reynolds..." "Please, Dr. Sims, just Jaiden is fine!" "So, you recognized my voice, did you?" "I did, Sir, and it is always a pleasure to speak with you. How may I help you?" "Jaiden, it's the children, we need to talk."
Uh oh, I don't know if I like the sound of that."
"Oh no, it's all good. In fact, I have never had to contact the parents of any student for the reasons I am calling."
"OK. Can you give me a clue as to the reason for this call?"
"I can, but first, I'd like to meet with your husband, Dale, and Charley together since this involves all the children." "Let me check with the guys and I'll call you back in a few minutes."
"Dale, this is Jaiden. I just got a call from Dr. Sims and he wants to have a conference with Charley, you, Peyton, and me about the children -- all of them. Would you rather meet with him at the school, in one of our conference rooms, or at the house?" "Jaiden, I would like to meet in the dining room at the house. And by the way, you have me quaking in my boots. Why the meeting?" "I'll let you know when we get home. I have to call Dr. Sims back to let him know we'd like to meet with him at the house tonight."
"Dale, babe, what's wrong? You're as white as a sheet." "Charley, Dr. Sims wants to meet with you, Peyton, Jaiden, and me about all the children and I have no idea why. Jaiden said he had to return Dr. Sims' call and he'll fill us in tonight at the house." Now Charley was as white as a sheet and wondering, "What the hell have the children done this time?"
Dale and Charley left the office early so they'd be home when Jaiden and Peyton got there. About thirty minutes later, their cohort brothers walked into the house.
"OK, Jaiden, why the meeting tonight. What did the children do?" "Not a thing, Charley. This is about how they have gotten too smart too quickly. Not one of the children has a GPA below 110 on a scale of zero to 100. Leon and Andrew will be at the house for the meeting. I wanted Leon's input as a child psychologist about whatever it is we are going to be queried about."
"I've gotta hand it to you, Jaiden; that was a smart idea." "I'm glad you think so, my brother."
Peyton called Tony's and ordered varied Italian dishes for them, the children, and their guests. "By the way, Carolyn Spencer will be part of this meeting." "Is that a good sign, Peyton?" "Probably. When Jaiden tried to find out what Dr. Sims wanted to discuss, Dr. Sims said, `let me put it this way: Young Sheldon'."
Charley said, "This is sure as hell going to be interesting. I'm almost scared." "That's four of us, Charley." Dale spoke up and said, "I think I know what this is about: Little Sheldon, Dr. Sims, Carolyn Spencer, the four of us dads, and our 10 children; we have a little Sheldon in the group."
Jaiden said, "Dale, you are almost correct in your statement; however, it isn't one Sheldon, it's ten!" "You have to be kidding us, Jaiden, you have to be!"
"Nope, Nada, not at all. They all have a 110-GPA. Think about it: brilliant and under challenged."
Peyton went to pick up the food, and when he got back to the house, Dr. Sims and Carolyn Spencer were already there. Peyton walked into the house, called the children inside, and said, "Food served buffet style, everybody dig in and get what you want."
When everyone was sufficiently stuffed, the table was cleared, and the children were told to go to their rooms and do their homework. Alaina Noelle said, "Daddy, we've already done our homework." "All of it?" "Yes, Sir, all of it."
Dr. Sims said, see what I meant by "Little Sheldon!" Carolyn Spencer leaned her head back and started laughing. The dads simply sat at the table shaking their heads.
Jaiden mused out loud, "And I thought it would be behavioral problems, but the boy who got his butt kicked by Jason deserved it, so they said nothing about it. Maybe Alaina cold-cocking some boy for picking at her brothers? Dr. Sims let the dads know they had incurred some of that behavior. Dale asked him what he meant.
"Dale, a boy was picking on and pushing Alaina, and before she could wallop him good, meek, mild Jason hit that boy so hard he knocked him over a desk. We had to call the boy's mother to come to the school to calm him down. She brought the boy's dad with her and when he found out his son had been bullying a little girl who could have stomped the boy's butt, the dad asked me to let the little girl do just that. He was furious with his son. He asked for your telephone number, so I gave him your office numbers. He will probably call you tomorrow." "That's fine, Dr. Sims. If you have his number with you, I'll go ahead and call him."
Jaiden got the telephone number and immediately called the gentleman. "Mr. Perryman, this is Dr., Jaiden Riley-Reynolds. I understand there was a squirmish between our children. My normally meek, shy, quiet son apparently hit your son rather hard for picking on and pushing my brother's daughter. We have ten children in our household and they have been raised together and see each other as siblings rather than cousins. I am going to talk to Jason to ensure that doesn't happen again." "Doc, it's ok. My son shouldn't have been picking on your niece. I would love for him have to face her outside of school so she doesn't get into trouble at school if she kicks my son's butt."
"Mr. Perryman, we have some friends at the house and the children are outside playing in the back yard. Why don't you and your family join us and we'll watch the children get together. Turn left on Kensington and then take the first right. We're next to the last house on the right at the end of the street."
"We're just around the corner, so we'll be there in about five minutes." "That's awesome, we'll be looking forward to meeting your family." The Perryman's arrived at the Riley-Reynolds-Leonard-Anderson home and Jaiden answered the door, introduced himself and invited them inside and to the deck.
"Guys, the is Jerry and Judith Perryman and their children: Douglas, Daron, and Amy. You have already heard about Daron tonight. I thought it would be nice to let the children meet and play together while the adults talk."
Jerry, this is my husband, Peyton, and our brothers Dale and Charley. Alaina Noelle is Dale and Charley's spoiled daughter. You can blame Dale for that." Charley said, "Amen to that, his dad warned him and he didn't listen."
Alaina saw Daron on the deck and went up to her dad and was introduced to Mr. and Mrs. Perryman. They watched in amazement as Alaina Noelle curtsied upon meeting Mrs. Perryman, who was surprised by Alaina's impeccable manners.
Dale's eyes almost popped out of his head when he saw his daughter do that. "Alaina, where did you learn to do that?" "Daddy, I watched Princess Kate when we met her at their home in England." "You did! Well, sweetheart, I'm proud of you!"
Alaina looked at Daron and his brother and sister and said, "Come on guys, let's go play in the yard." And away they went. Not one shred of animosity was noticed, and all the adults were shocked beyond belief.
The Perryman's asked if the children always let things go so beautifully, and Peyton assured them that they did, that they were very good children, but that they didn't let go so easily at first and told the Perryman's that Alaina must have a crush on Daron because she is usually the protector of the group, and her not belting Daron herself was quite unusual. "Jaiden, Peyton, Dale, Charley, we apologize for the incident at the school and have had a long talk with Daron. He understands we will punish him if we ever hear of him bullying another child. We just moved to Erie, and he is having a hard time with the move and has been acting out."
Jaiden took his phone out and called Leon and asked if he would do him a favor and talk with Daron. Leon said sure and to have the parents call the office and make an appointment. "Leon, why don't I let you speak with them, they are sitting on the deck with us. After you talk to Jerry and Edith, why don't you and Andrew come over and you can meet the family. They are brand-new to Erie, and therein lies the problem." After the Perryman's and Leon spoke, he told them to tell Jaiden they were on their way over.
Fifteen minutes later, Andrew and Leon walked onto the deck and Jaiden introduced them to the Perryman's. Leon went to the rail after being told which of the children was Daron and watched the boy interacting with the household's children. He was pleasantly surprised and said he thought everything would resolve itself in due time and for the Perryman's not to be too concerned. Needless to say, they were quite relieved at Leon's reassurance.
Daron walked onto the deck and told his mom he didn't feel good and wanted to lie down. Andrew took one look at the boy and asked Jaiden and the Perryman's if they could go upstairs to the boy's bedroom so he could examine Daron. He was concerned that Daron appeared swollen over most of his body.
When they got up to the boy's bedroom, he had Daron undress, and his eyes almost popped out of his hear at what he saw. Daron's scrotum and testicles were about three time the size they should have been; lymph nodes were swollen from his head to his feet.
"Edith, Jerry, here is a prescription for some low-dose Meloxicam. Daron has the mumps and he is going to need something for pain. If his temperature gets over 103, I want you to call me immediately so we can reevaluate the situation. If it doesn't get any worse, it should take a week for him to get out of the infectious stage and we won't need to prescribe an antiviral medication. Jerry, watch the testicles, and it they swell more than they already have, he may need to be admitted to the hospital and be put on IV medications to control the swelling." "Andrew, is this dangerous?" "It can render Daron sterile if it gets out of hand, so we need to monitor this closely. Give a tablet of Meloxicam tonight and if it reduces the swelling tonight, everything should be OK. If it doesn't, we'll need to see him in the morning at the office. Just bring him on in if necessary and go to the first door past the office door and knock. Someone will let you in."
"Daron, I am giving you very strict orders to stay in bed. Put an ice-pack on your testicals and scrotum. You may want to put a wash cloth on them first so the ice-pack won't be too cold. Oh, and one more thing: No school for at least a week, OK!" "Not really Dr. Andrew, I really like my new school." "Don't worry son, they'll make sure you get some work to do at home. And I'm sure Alaina won't mind going to your house to help you with the school work if you need it. Bedsides, I think she has a crush on you!"
The adults were taken aback when Daron's eyes almost popped out of his head when he heard Andrew say Alaina could go over to help him with his school work. "Doctor Andrew, I really like her but I'm afraid to tell her."
"Alaina was in the hallway and went into the room where Daron was -- sans his clothing. He was embarrassed and she could tell it but told him she sees her brothers like that all the time and doesn't think anything about it.
"By the way, Daron, what are you scared to tell me?" That boy turned red from head to toe, and his daddy tole him to go ahead and tell Alaina. "Alaina, we just moved here and I don't have any friends yet, and I really like you." "I really like you too, Daron. We'll be great friends and you can be friends with my nine brothers too!" "Awesome, Alaina. Thanks." "You're welcome. By the way, you're really cute!" Talk about blushing, Daron did!
Jaiden gave Daron something to help him rest and sleep and told his parents to let the boy stay in the bed he was lying on. "Why don't y'all let him stay here tonight and Peyton and I can watch him to make sure he doesn't get any worse. We're both pediatricians and pediatric surgeons, so he'll be in good hands." "Jaiden, are you sure you don't mind? "Not at all Jerry, glad to do it for you and Edith." Peyton and my brothers can take the children to the synagogue for services and I'll stay home with Daron."
"So. you're Jewish?" "We are, and we have a wonderful temple where you and your family are always welcome, Jewish or not."
"We are Jewish and we were going to look for a Reform Temple with a good Rabbi and children's program." "Well, I think we have the best."
The adults went back to the deck as Daron fell asleep in the boy's bedroom. Jason would love to get to sleep with his dads, so he wouldn't mind that Daron was in his bed.
Before he went back onto the deck, Jaiden called the Rabbi and asked him to come over for some coffee and to bring the wife and children with him. The Rabbi was already walking into the backyard when Jaiden returned to the deck.
"Jerry, Edith, this is Rabbi Kravitz, our Rabbi at Temple Anshe Hesed. Rabbi, this is Jerry and Edith Perryman. They talked for quite a while and the Perryman's were excited to find the synagogue so easily, and they were very impressed with Rabbi Kravits. Saturday Shabbot services were going to be exciting for all concerned. When Alaina learned Daron would be attending her shul, she was mega excited and smiling from ear to ear. She knew, however, that Daron wouldn't be in Shabbot Services Saturday morning because he was sick -- with the mumps -- and big, big balls. And he had a cute little dick, too; she saw it!
The Rabbi asked which children belonged to the Perryman's and they pointed out their two in the yard and told Rabbi Kravitz that Daron was upstairs asleep -- with the mumps. "And?" the Rabbi asked. Jerry held his hands up and formed the size of half a basketball. The Rabbi looked panicked. His youngest looked the same as what Jerry described. Andrew noticed his look and said, "Let's go over to the house and let me check him." A thorough exam, a prescription for low-dose Meloxicam and 20 minutes later, Andrew was back at Jaiden's.
Jaiden looked at the Rabbi and Andrew and asked, "Well?" "Mumps .... and swollen - just like Daron!" Rabbi, go get your son and bring him over here so we can watch him tonight and make sure he doesn't get worse. If he does, we'll call you and head to the hospital." The Rabbi did as he was told and the two sick boys were put to bed in the boy's bedroom and the five boys got to sleep in the big, nice beds downstairs. They were excited! There was a television in the bedrooms -- which their dad would disable for the night." That, the boys weren't happy about; but they didn`t complain.
Saturday, morning, Peyton brought the Perryman family up to speed on Daron, who was now running a slight fever. He got permission for Jaiden to give Daron some Tylenol for the fever, and by the time everyone got to Jaiden's and Peyton's, the fever had started subsiding -- and that was good. Daron looked and felt decidedly better and was happy to see his parents. He told them all about how nice the doctors and their children were to him and how he was sorry he didn't get to go to the Temple with his family. That sorrow would be short-lived as Rabbis Belson and Kravitz went to meet him. They had him laughing in no time, and the Perryman's realized, as the four guys did in Maui - they had found the perfect synagogue and the best of friends. That morning, Daron had awakened wondering where he was. He was in an unfamiliar house, in a strange bed, smelling the most wonderful smell he had ever smelled. Jaiden walked into the bedroom and said, "Good morning, Daron, I'm Dr. Riley-Reynolds. You got sick last night while your family was visiting, and since my spouse and I are pediatricians, we let you stay here so we could make sure you would be OK."
"Your privates were hurting pretty badly and were very swollen, so we gave you some medicine to help with that. Are they feeling better this morning?" "Yes, Sir, they don't look as big as they did yesterday, and they don't hurt as bad."
"Well, let me check them right quick so I can call your parents and let them know you are feeling better. Yep, the swelling has gone down a lot. I think you're going to be just fine in about a week. I know you don't want to miss school, and I understand why, but rules say you have to stay home until you can't spread the mumps to somebody who hasn't been vaccinated for the virus."
"Dr. Riley-Reynolds, what am I smelling that smells so good?" "Daron, that is Hawaiian banana waffles. Since you had a bad night, I thought you might like something good for breakfast. Do you feel like going to the kitchen to eat a little bit?" "Yes, Sir, I think I can."
When Daron stood up and tried to walk, he realized that his testicles still hurt like hell. He took one step and winced, so Jaiden picked him up and took him outside on deck to eat breakfast in the cool morning breeze. When he sat the waffles and syrup in front of Daron, he couldn't help but grin when the boy tasted the waffles and then scarfed them down.
"Doctor ..." "Daron, call me Dr. Jaiden; that's easier to say." "Dr. Jaiden, that was the best waffle I have ever tasted, and the bacon was delicious." "That was soy bacon, Daron; I'm glad you enjoyed it. Would you like some more bacon and maybe half a waffle?" "Please, Dr. Jaiden. That waffle was so good. I am going to have to ask mom to fix some of those sometime." "Well, I'll give her the recipe so she can do that for you."
The phone rang, and it was Edith calling to check on Daron. Jaiden spoke with her for a moment and then handed the phone to Daron. "Hey Mom, you should have been here to taste the waffles and bacon Dr. Jaiden fixed; they were delicious and I got to have seconds."
"Really!" "Yes, Mam; they were Hawaiian banana waffles with a syrup from Hawaii. And the bacon was some I had never tasted before and it was so good."
"Well, son, I am glad you enjoyed your breakfast and that you seem to be feeling better." "I am, Mom, but I'm still hurting pretty bad in my privates. Dr. Jaiden checked them and they aren't as swollen. He gave me some medicine to make the swelling go down a little bit, and it helped a lot. He picked me up in the bedroom and carried me to the deck for breakfast. It was fun eating outside."
"I'm glad you are feeling better, son. Your dad and I will come over shortly and pick you up to bring you home." "OK, mom; but can I stay just a little bit after you and Dad get here? Alaina is just getting home from Temple, and she's cute." "Yes, you can spend a little bit of time, but I'm sure Dr. Jaiden needs to get some rest after caring for you all night." "OK. Thanks, Mom."
"Well, Jerry, the trouble seems to have resolved itself. Daron sounds like he is feeling better, and I think he has a major crush on Alaina, and I think the feeling is mutual on her side." "Dang, Edith, that boy sure works fast; and he has good taste in girls just like I did." "I love you, too, Jerry!" "Yeah, I know. Now give me a kiss."
Jerry and Edith drove over to Jaiden's and Peyton's and were surprised to see their son sitting on the deck, smiling, and watching every move Alaina made. He is definitely smitten.
"Jerry, Edith, Daron is still rather swollen in his nether region, but not as badly as last night. Keep giving him one Meloxicam in the evenings about an hour before he goes to bed and he should sleep OK. He had a good night last night and slept the entire night. I checked on him a few times, and since he was resting comfortably, I didn't risk waking him up by cutting on a light." Jerry told Jaiden he was glad he could get some rest, too, and thanked Jaiden profusely for taking care of Daron.
"We'll come by your office tomorrow to pay you for taking care of Daron." "No charge, my friend; I was glad to be able to help you. I've enjoyed seeing my niece concerned about her new boyfriend .... Her first boyfriend! They are so cute being together. I don't think Daron will have any more problems with anxiety from being in a new environment."
"Momma, can you get the recipe for the waffles from Dr. Jaiden. I'd like to have them at home sometime." "I will do that son. You must have really liked them." "I did, Momma; they were so good. And the syrup on the waffles made them even better."
Dale made a pot of coffee and carried it to the deck .... condiments were on the table outside, so the adults fixed their coffee the way they liked it and had a good time conversing. Jaiden kept an eye on everyone to ensure they were able to relax and not be stressed over Daron. He also watched Daron as he walked into the back yard to be near Alaina. "Jerry, what Daron is doing is OK as long as he doesn't over do it, so let him move around at home. If he starts having any pain, he'll sit down and rest." Just as Jaiden said that, was observed Daron sitting down in the shade of the tree -- with Alaina sitting next to him.
When the guests had gone home, the dads sat down to discuss the children being moved up two grades at school. They couldn't believe the children had actually done the work of the two grades they would be skipping -- and they had perfect scores at that!
Peyton voiced his concern about the older classmates perhaps being too to hard on their children. Dale was also concerned about that, but decided that they should talk to the children about what they would like to do, so that is what the dads did.
What they learned from their children when they spoke with them was eye opening. They weren't at all concerned about being with the older children. In fact they were excited about it. They liked being in a class with Carolyn Spencer, and it was apparent they learned a lot from her.
The decision was made: the dads would allow the move upward with the stipulation that if it didn't work socially, the children would move back to where they currently are. And the move would take place at the beginning of the new school year. May God help and bless the teachers who got the children in their classes!
Carolyn Spencer was teaching a smaller class since she had been promoted to vice-principal, and she would oversee and monitor the children's progress in their new grade level. It would be an experiment of sorts, but with children who were so intelligent and capable, she didn't anticipate any problems. If any problems arose, she would evaluate the reason{s} therein and take appropriate action.
Meanwhile, they boys were interacting with Daron and making sure they weren't too rough. They had been warned by Alaina Noelle that they better not let Daron get hurt. She pointed at Chuck and reminded them how he fell out of the tree and got hurt. It's hilarious that at her young age, Alaina knows just how to control her brothers and keep them inline. Charley quipped that the boys were scared to death of crossing their sister, and, given her `talents,' they should be.
The guys and the Perrymans talked about the mornings Temple experience and Jerry and Edith said they had never attended a Synagogue where the people were more accepting and friendly. They had indeed found a new home at which their family could worship. As they sipped the last of their coffee, Edith asked Dale what brand of coffee he use to brew such a magnificent cup of Java. "Edith, I use pure Kona coffee from the Big Island of Hawaii, but I ran out and what you are drinking now is Hugh's Blend from Laughing Man Coffee out of New York. We really like the brand and it is about a third cheaper that Kona which is about twenty-two dollars per pound."
"I must say it is really delicious! Expensive, but delicious." "We wouldn't buy it if we were just starting out as a family. Peyton and Jaiden are doctors, and Charley and I have our doctorates in Engineering and work for a large firm out of Memphis, Tennessee. We specialize in hospitals and other large medical facilities, and the four of us own an engineering lab where we make prosthetic titanium bone replacements for Jaiden and Peyton's cancer patients. Peyton has a Masters in Environmental Engineering and Jaiden has a Master's in Mechanical Engineering like his dad had. His dad was also a children's cancer specialist at St. Jude's in Memphis until he died in a plane crash in Africa while on a medical mission. His mother is an Emergency Medicine Physician and has a Masters in Environmental Engineering. She practices a wholistic type of medicine and has been immensely successful."
"What do your and Charley's parents do, if I may ask?" My dad is a partner in a large Accountancy firm in Pensacola, Florida, and Charley's dad owns a large construction firm in Orange Beach, Alabama. He and his carpenters build the large children's bedrooms and baths you have seen, and four large bedrooms downstairs for family and friends when they visit. Speaking of which we have to check and make sure the children made up the beds. I'm sure they did, but we always check anyway."
"Your children appear to be truly responsible." "Yes, mam, they are. They know better than not to be, but the funny thing is, they've always been that way without being told." "I suppose that is because you and your brothers set the example for them." "I hope so, we certainly try to do that. Jaiden and Peyton have been good teachers for us since we met in college in North Carolina."
"Ah, Appalachia. Jerry loves that area of the country. The people there are real and what you see is what you get." "We've all said the same thing, Edith. Not only are the Appalachian people real, while they are for the most part not well educated, they are very smart in other ways and they are truly good people. If they befriend you, you have a friend for life."
"We hate to run, Dale, but we need to get Daron home and let him rest a little bit. It's going to be a long week of staying home. That boy hates to miss school."
When the Perrymans had gone home, Peyton said, "I have really enjoyed meeting them. I think they are going to be good friends. I also think they fit in well at the synagogue and will enjoy worshipping there. Jaiden dittoed that comment.
