Jamie Lawrence - Chapter Seven

"Did I tell you how cute you look in your jammies?" asked Shane as the two watched the television from Shane's bed.

"I actually thought you hated them. You seemed pretty adamant about getting them off me," Jamie mumbled into Shane's chest. In the last few weeks, Jamie had found that there was no pillow in the world more comfortable than Shane's chest, and that there was no blanket that could warm him as well as Shane's arm wrapped around him.

Jamie put his hand up Shane's pyjama top and idly played with his belly button. Shane chuckled, wobbling Jamie's head as he did. "I'd have succeeded too, if you weren't so insistent on being 'careful'. And after all that, my Dad never did come in here."

"It's always better to show prudence," Jamie chided. "You're very lucky I slept in this bed with you at all. If I had had any sense, I would have slept on that." Jamie pointed to the air mattress on the floor by Shane's bed. Gerry had brought it up from the cellar for Jamie last night when he found out Jamie planned to stay the night. All told, he hadn't seemed very happy about it, asking why Jamie couldn't stay at his own house.

Diane had rather firmly told him that if her son wanted his best friend to sleep over, then he was damn well going to sleep over. This started another discussion about why Darren was no longer Shane's best friend. "And while we're at it; why haven't you been out with that Jenny girl since your Prom?" he had demanded. Shane had fobbed him off with claims that she was a bore and shooed his father from the room.

Shane kissed Jamie's forehead. "That reminds me; we should muss the blanket on there to make it less obvious that you didn't use it." Jamie was about to speak, but Shane stuck his hand over his mouth. "There's somebody coming up the stairs!"

Jamie didn't delay. He dove from the bed with catlike agility and slipped as quickly as he could onto the air mattress, cursing the squeaks that were sure to announce his actions.

He settled in with not a second to spare. The door swung open, but instead of seeing Gerry, they saw Diane. Jamie relaxed and rolled his eyes at his own panic. "Morning Diane."

"Morning Mum."

"Morning boys. I need to talk to you boys about our little secret."

Shane sat bolt upright. "Dad's not found out has he?" He sounded petrified.

"No dear. And Jamie, you can resume your former position. He's gone to work." Jamie smiled and clambered back into his favourite position, listening to the rumble of Shane's heart. "Gerry wants to know more about you, Jamie. He wants to make sure that you are a suitable friend for Shane. He has concerns about how much Shane has changed recently and naturally, he's pointing the finger in your direction."

"What are you getting at?"

"I managed to convince him to get to know you better. He wants you to have dinner with us on Tuesday night."

"That doesn't sound too bad. It'll give me a chance to break down the whole 'I hate fags' thing he has going on."

"Actually dear, I was rather hoping you could pretend to have a girlfriend." Jamie arched his eyebrows at her. He could hardly believe that Diane would suggest such a thing. "Or at least that you're straight." She held up her hands defensively. "I know it's not ideal. The fact is this; If Gerry finds out that you are gay, he will forbid Shane from seeing you, and none of us wants that, do we?"

"Can we have some time to talk it over, Mum?" asked Shane.

"Of course. You could always just refuse to come, Jamie. I'll tell him you have a family emergency or something." She turned to leave.

"Before you go, Mum, we need to ask you something. What's our endgame here? Hiding the truth is all very well and good as long as we have a solution, but if we're just playing for time until I'm eighteen, it might be better to get it out in the open now."

Diane sighed. "Honestly, this IS the plan. After your father did what he did to your uncle, I thought that eventually he would feel some remorse, but the years haven't changed him. In fact I think he's become even more homophobic."

"So what does this mean?"

Diane spread her hands. "This." She turned and left.

Jamie was watching Shane as the impact of Diane's words sunk in. "What the hell am I going to do? I don't like lying to my Dad as it is, but the idea of lying to him for the foreseeable future..."

"Well, have you got anything better planned?" Shane shook his head. "Well then, for now at least, maybe your Mum is right, and maybe she's right about dinner. If I turn up and act like a flamer, your father will keep us apart. I don't think it's necessary for me to pretend to have a girlfriend though. It might invite questions I wouldn't know how to answer."

Jamie's phone buzzed on the night stand. "It's from Sam," said Shane, passing it to Jamie.

'Cinema 4pm? Bring ur bf!' was all it said.

"Do you want to go to the cinema with Sam and Matty? You don't have to talk to Matty if you really don't want to, but I would really like it if you two got along."

Shane sighed exaggeratedly. "Okay. Anything for you." He kissed Jamie and returned his attention to the television.

Jamie hit reply. 'C u @ 4'.

As the pair rode the bus to the cinema, Jamie thought about how different things were from the last time they had done it. Last time, Shane had been afraid to even hold Jamie's hand. This time, he held Jamie's hand, kissed his lips, and at one point even gave Jamie's crotch a quick squeeze.

Jamie put his hand Shane's thigh. "You know, technically, this is only our third date. You've been horribly remiss in wooing me."

"I suppose it is our third date. Does that mean you're going to put out tonight?" said Shane, smirking.

Jamie put on his best shocked expression. "What kind of girl do you think I am?"

"The easy kind," said Shane with a wink. Jamie slapped his thigh. "Ouch! I hope you're going to kiss that better!"

Jamie craned his neck and gave Shane a chaste kiss. "How's that?"

"It'll do for now."

Jamie pressed the 'Stop' button and the pair moved to the front of the bus. Shane wrapped his arms around Jamie while the bus came to a halt. A boy perhaps two years older than them looked at them in their embrace. "Fucking faggots."

Jamie was stunned. His mind flew back to the cinema restroom six weeks ago when the man walked in and said the exact same thing to them. Shane had been wonderful in that situation, offering a quick sarcastic remark. Six weeks on, Jamie had to wonder what Shane's reaction would be.

Shane looked at the boy. "Jealous straight boy." He said it matter- of-factly, without a hint of aggression or spite. A few of the other passengers snickered and the boy's cheeks went red.

The doors opened and the pair disembarked without another word. Standing in the street, watching the bus move away, Jamie took Shane's hand. "I'm so proud of you."

They hurried along to the cinema. As they rounded the corner, expecting to see Sam and Matthew, instead they saw Sam and an attractive red-headed boy. His hair was cut into an emo style and he was wearing a tight t-shirt and jeans. Strangely, he was upside down and walking around on his hands while Sam giggled away at him.

As Jamie and Shane neared, Sam spotted them. "Titch!" As was her custom, she ran to him and stuffed his face between her breasts. Jamie wrapped his arms around her waist and waited to be released. Eventually she pulled away. "Hey Shane." The hug she gave him was less excited, but still affectionate.

The red head had now righted himself and came over wiping his hands on his shirt. "This is Luke," said Sam. "My new boyfriend."

Shane reached out and shook the boy's hand. Jamie, however, was looking pointedly at Sam. "Not to make things awkward but what about Matty?"

Sam looked confused for a moment. "Luke, why don't you and Shane go and get the tickets. I need to have a word with Titch."

Luke nodded and gave Sam a quick kiss. Not to be outdone, Shane slipped Jamie a little tongue, squeezed his arse and said "Love you."

Sam led Jamie down into a series of graduated seats, much like a small amphitheatre. The grey stone steps led down to a small green lawn in front of an even smaller restaurant. As it was recessed fifty feet into the ground, it was invariably flooded by the Manchester weather, rendering sitting on the soaked surface an unpleasant prospect. Thankfully, it was summer and the two were able to sit without a problem.

"Matthew really should be the one telling you this. He and I broke up."

Jamie could scarcely believe what he was hearing. Part of him was screaming that this was some kind of practical joke. The two had been so incredibly in love that Jamie was convinced Matthew was on the verge of proposing to her. "What? When the hell was this?"

"Six weeks ago. The night the four of us came here. I went on holiday with my parents and I thought that by the time I got back, Matthew would have told you."

"I don't understand. Why wouldn't you tell me? When we went to the salon; you could have told me then."

"I was caught off guard. I texted Matthew and he blew me off. He told me to mind my own business and that he would tell you in his own good time, but it's getting ridiculous."

"You're keeping something from me. What's going on?"

Sam sighed. "That's something you and Matthew should discuss. So what do you think of Luke?" she asked, changing the subject quickly.

"I'd give him eight of ten."

"What about me?"

"You know I don't rate the ladies." He winked at her.

Sam took Jamie's hand and led him into the cinema. Upon entering, Jamie saw that Shane had come back down from the ticket office. "You didn't think I'd let you face this beast alone, did you?" He kicked the side of the escalator as he spoke.

Jamie had been so preoccupied with Sam's revelation that he hadn't even considered the escalator, but he could think of nothing else now. Sam went on ahead to find Luke and Shane pulled Jamie to his chest.

As Jamie clung to Shane, he said softly "You're definitely a ten."

As the four sat in the back row of the cinema, Jamie was all but oblivious to both the film, and to Shane's amorous efforts. He could not help but get angrier and angrier at Matthew. Jamie knew that he had no right to be offended by this. Sam was fine with it, and Matthew clearly had no qualms with it, and yet Jamie couldn't help but feel massively betrayed by Matthew's silence.

Jamie could not rest his mind. Even with his lips mingled with Shane's, his mind was still on Matthew. Jamie broke away from Shane and rose so abruptly that the action startled his boyfriend.

"What is it?!"

"I'm going to kill Matty!"

"Can I come?" asked Shane with a cheeky smile.

Jamie's answer stalled in his throat when he realised that Shane was gently mocking him. He laughed at himself. "Okay, maybe I'm overreacting a little bit. I just want to get something cleared up before it drives me mad."

"Righty-oh." Shane grabbed his coat and rose from his seat.

"No!" Jamie put his hand on Shane's chest and pushed him back down. He resumed his own seat. "You've been looking forward to watching this for weeks. You watch a teddy-bear run rampant around a city, and I'll go and kick my best friend in the teeth."

"I thought we were going to spend tonight at yours."

Jamie thought a moment. "Come to mine at about eight. I'll make it worth your while." Jamie went to give Shane a quick parting kiss, but Shane had other ideas.

The moment Jamie's lips made contact, Shane grabbed hold of his neck and made it a deep, passionate kiss that left Jamie a little giddy.

Jamie observed that neither of Matthew's parents were home as their cars were both gone. This would mean he could be as loud as he wanted when he yelled at Matthew. It struck him yet again that this was a repetition of that first day out. He had come to yell at Matthew then too. Jamie banged on the door with all his might.

Matthew answered the door in nothing but a pair of boxers. "What do have to say for yourself?" demanded Jamie.

"Drop the attitude. I'm not a misbehaving child." He opened the door a little wider to allow Jamie access.

Jamie stood in the hall staring angrily at Matthew. "Why didn't you tell me that you and Sam aren't together?"

"Because it doesn't concern you," said Matthew with a shrug.

"Three years, you've told me everything that's ever happened to you. You know everything there is to know about me, but suddenly I don't get to know that you broke up with a girl I thought you loved?"

"She broke up with me."

"Yeah, and Sam told me it was the night we all went to the cinema. Six fucking weeks, Matty!"

"Like you care. You've been too busy making babies with Carter to notice me. You've barely spoken to me the last few weeks."

"Is that what this is about? Are you punishing me for being with Shane?" Jamie was almost shouting, his voice cracking under the pressure of it.

"Don't be ridiculous! I don't give a damn what you and that arsehole are doing to each other." Matthew had started to shout too.

"Then what the fuck is the problem?"

"If you just want an argument, then you can leave now." He thrust his arm at the door.

"I want you to tell me why you have such a problem with Shane!" Jamie stepped towards Matthew and poked him hard in his bare chest. "Tell me!" Matthew was clearly agitated. "Tell me!" He shook his head angrily. "Tell me why you have such a problem with Shane!"

"Because it should be me!" he nearly screamed.

Jamie was convinced he had misheard Matthew. It wasn't possible that he had said what Jamie thought he had. "I'm sorry; what?" he said, pinching the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger.

Matthew had his hands over his face. He roared, sounding eerily animalistic. "You should be with me. I WANT you to be with me."

Jamie processed what he said, the nonsense of it burning his temples. He was now acutely aware of Matthew's proximity and state of undress. Something that for three years had been so normal now suddenly felt horribly inappropriate. Jamie took a step backwards.

The pair were frozen; the air around them was cloying and neither knew what to do for the best. "You couldn't have told me this...Oh, I don't know, maybe BEFORE I had fallen in love with somebody else?" There was a sarcastic bite to his tone.

"I didn't know."

Jamie was shaking his head. "No." He started pacing back and forth. "No! This is ridiculous! You're not gay. Three years and you've never given any indication that you are, and God knows there have been plenty of opportunities!" Jamie was wagging his finger in Matthew's face as he spoke.

Matthew swatted Jamie's hand away. "Don't be daft. How many straight guys do you know who would spend a third of his nights cuddled up to a gay guy?"

"That's just how we've always been!"

"Why are you fighting this so hard?" demanded Matthew.

"Because if it's true, then I don't know you at all!" Jamie slumped onto the stairs, the weight of the truth he had just admitted suddenly striking him. "If you ARE gay, then not only have we wasted the last three years, but it also means I don't know you as well as I thought I did."

"But I didn't know it until Shane came on the scene." Matthew's voice was thick with emotion as he sat down next to Jamie. "I didn't understand what was going on. All I knew was that I desperately and irrationally hated Shane. The argument with Sam was the tipping point. She started yelling at me for being so mean about Shane."

"How mean?" Jamie teased.

"Ooh, like REALLY mean. Anyway; She stops mid-sentence and says 'Oh my God, I know what this is! You're jealous. You want Jamie.' At first it sounded laughable."

Jamie rolled his eyes. "Oh yeah. Homosexuality is a laugh a minute."

"That's not what I meant, and you know it."

"Sorry, go on."

"That's why I was drinking that night. I wanted to forget about you and Shane. Then you turned up at my door all wet and crying. The light clicked on for me right then. I knew Sam was right."

"Wait. That was the night you invited me to Prom. Was that supposed to be a real date?"

Jamie saw Matthew's cheeks go bright red. "Kinda."

Jamie thought about Prom night. How Matthew had never once left his side for more than a minute. How they had danced together. He began analysing every hug, every cursory glance he could remember passing between the two. It occurred to Jamie that if Matthew had acted before Shane, the last three weeks would have been completely different. The rest of his life would be completely different.

Jamie realised that he was being horribly inconsiderate. He had been thinking about how this changed everything and about how all of this affected him. He hadn't once thought about Matthew. He took Matthew's arm and wrapped it around himself.

"I would have wanted to be there for you, you know. If you had told me."

"I know you would. That's part of why I love you." He kissed Jamie's forehead.

"What do you want me to do about this? If you think I'm going to ditch Shane to get with you..."

"Would it really be all that ridiculous?"

"Not ridiculous, no, but Shane and I are in love."

"You mean the guy who, two months ago, spat at you in front of our entire class and called you a fudgepacker?"

"You know what? I'm going. I know what Shane did to me all those times, but he's a different person now. It's you who can't forget this enmity." Jamie moved to the door.

"No, wait!" Matthew grabbed Jamie's arm and pulled him back. "I'm sorry. You just have no idea what it's like to know that he's the one who gets you."

"Yeah, I guess I felt the same way when you first got with Sam," Jamie admitted. He looked quickly at his watch. "I actually do have to go now. Shane's expecting me."

In an attempt to show Matthew that everything was still the same between them, he gave his best friend a hug. They kept hold of each other for longer than was necessary, and when Jamie made to move away, Matthew kissed him fully on the lips.

Their height difference made it a little awkward, but there was something more. It felt nice. Jamie felt his lips open to allow Matthew access. Matthew picked Jamie up around his bottom, lifting him a foot off the ground. Jamie wrapped his arms around Matthew's neck as he allowed Matthew's tongue to massage his own. Jamie moaned softly.

He had fantasized about this many times, but never in any of his dreams had he pulled away and said "No, stop. Put me down."

Matthew obliged, clearly quite begrudgingly. "What?"

"You shouldn't have done that. I shouldn't have done that. It wasn't fair."

"But..."

"I'm going." Jamie pulled the door open and ran. He ignored busy streets and honked horns. There didn't come a point when he felt that he had put enough distance between him and Matthew. Instead, he ran all the way home and slammed the door shut before locking it. He started to cry softly. When Shane knocked on the door at eight o'clock exactly, Jamie recovered himself. He opened the door, smiled and kissed his boyfriend. The decision whether to tell Shane or not Shane would have to wait.

Matthew had watched Jamie run away and knew that he had fucked up. He wanted to chase after him, but he was standing in a pair of boxers which were tenting just a little.

He sighed, closed the door and rested his forehead against the cool glass. "He kissed me back," he said to himself. "He fucking kissed me back!" He felt like celebrating. He smiled and went up to his bedroom. His cock was begging for some attention, so Matthew settled himself on his bed and went to work.
