Joey and Lucas (chapter 3) by Aran
MEANWHILE (Ben's Point of View)
I left Lucas' place when The Man Show ended. Now I have one major problem, I'm horny as hell. As I was walking towards the subway station I saw a hot group of women go into a bar. This gave me an idea; maybe I could have some help relieving my "stress". I went into the bar and ordered a drink. I started checking out the prospects, and the competition (usually Lucas would help me with that, but he isn't here now). For some reason my attention was drawn to one man in particular. He was about 5'11" with long black hair and a beard and looked to be in his late twenties. Something about him gave me the creeps. Over the next two and a half hours I made several attempts to get some company for the evening, but nobody that I was interested in was interested in me. At one point in the evening I glanced over towards the guy that freaked me out before, and he was staring right at me. Somewhat frustrated, and a little freaked out, I decided to head home. I got to the subway station just in time to miss both the express and local trains. At this time of night it could be 20 minutes before the next train. I just slipped by backpack off and put it between my legs as I leaned against a column and waited for the next train.
About five minutes (and no trains) later I saw three guys approach me. Immediately I noticed that the guy standing in the center of the group was the guy from the bar, the guy I caught staring at me. On either side of him were what could best be described as goons. They were both extremely tall and extremely muscular. The creepy guy stared at my face and then at something he had in his hand, then he nodded at the two other guys. The next thing I knew my head was headed towards the platform. My forehead smacked into the concrete of the platform opening a gash that started bleeding. The only thing I could concentrate on was the pain, but I was vaguely aware that they were going through my pockets, emptying them of their contents. Then they were gone. I managed to drag myself off the floor and head to the token booth so I could call the police.
The police got there pretty quickly. When they saw the gash in my forehead they insisted on taking me to the hospital to get it checked out. The waiting room can best be described as a zoo. It was crowded and noisy and smelly. It took almost two hours for a doctor to see me; it ended up needing two stitches. When I was done at the hospital the two cops who took me to the hospital took me to the precinct to fill out some forms and look at mug shots of known muggers in the area. I explained to the detective that I had seen the guy in the bar, and that he seemed to have been targeting me specifically, he said that the guy was probably in the bar looking for people to rob, and that I was just unlucky. By the time I was done there the sun was starting to rise over the city.
I got to my apartment building exhausted and desperate for some sleep. The super buzzed me into the building, when I reached my floor I got my spare key from the ledge over the door of an apartment down the hall from mine. When I got to my door I could sense that something was a little off. Instead of putting the key in the lock I gently pushed on my door, it swung wide open. As the door swung open the same three guys from the train station came into view. Apparently the stuff I carried wasn't good enough and they had to search my place too. I decided to avoid a conflict and leave quietly. Unfortunately one of the goons looked up just as I was turning to leave and spotted me. He chased me down the hallway and reached me just as I got to the stairs. The next thing I knew I was flying down the stairs, I blacked out as my head hit one of the stairs.
MEANWHILE (Lucas' Point of View)
As we headed towards the street the conversation was light. Joey did most of the talking, mostly about his family down in Florida. I asked him why he was in New York, and he quickly said NSYNC was recording and then changed the subject. I figured that something was going on, but decided to let him tell me about it when he wanted rather than pushing him to tell me. He hadn't told me what had happened, but I could tell by now that it involved the other guys by the way his expression changed whenever he mentioned one of them. When we reached the street it was pretty easy to get a cab. I told the cabbie the location of the diner, and just sat back and looked out the window. That's what I wanted it to look like anyway. I was really looking at Joey's reflection in the glass. Traffic was almost nonexistent and it only took us a few minutes to reach the diner. It was nearly empty, the only other people there besides the waitress and the cook were two cops on a break (at least I hope they were on a break).
We sat down and ordered I ordered the hot chocolates, as the waitress was about to leave Joey stopped her and ordered some French fries too. My only response was to raise my right eyebrow.
"I need comfort food. And who do you think you are with that eyebrow thing, The Rock?"
"The who?"
"Never mind"
We sat in the booth just looking at each other waiting for the other to speak. The waitress came by and dropped off our order. We thanked her and resumed staring at each other. I guess he couldn't stand the silence anymore, so he broke it.
"You go first."
"Alright..."
I proceeded to tell him about everything that had happened in the past few days. I told him about William coming to my place unannounced and blackmailing me with the pictures. I told him about the interview, about how nervous I was, but then for how for a little while it seemed like everything would be ok. Then I told him about being dropped from the Backstreet Boys tour. That one surprised him. From the expression on his face while I was speaking it seemed like he knew about everything else. Then, I started talking about my relationship with William. About how I started going out with him when Ben had been ignoring me the week after I came out to him. About how he dictated almost everything I did for our entire two-year relationship. We had the same lunch period when we were in school and he told me what I could and couldn't eat. He told me what to wear when we were going out together (we went to a private school and had to wear a uniform while in school). Then I told him that the thing that ended our relationship was that I caught him cheating. The day of our high school graduation I got to his place a little early and discovered him in bed with some guy I had never seen before. I dumped him on the spot and never looked back. He tried though, for the last year and a half he been calling, sending me flowers, sending me presents, all in a futile attempt to get back together with me.
"Wow"
"I know, now spill."
"What?"
"I told you about my problems. Obsessive ex-boyfriend... Career in ruins... Now it's your turn. You'll feel better once you talk about it."
"Ok, well I guess I should start out by telling you that I'm gay."
My eyes widened with surprise and my jaw dropped. He started to chuckle.
"Did I slip in under your gaydar?"
"Yeah. Well your incredibly butch, I guess that threw me off."
"(LOL) Butch? I don't think I've ever been called that before."
"Well... for a gay guy you are. Your one of those 'gay-straight-guys', I bet you're even a top."
I don't think I've ever seen anyone turn that red. His face was the same color as the ketchup that he was dipping his fries in. He was laughing though, and the pain that was in his eyes had evaporated momentarily.
"Sorry, now I think you were going tell me a story."
"Where was I? Oh yeah, well I had decided to come out to the guys tonight, and when I did... Let's just say that the reaction was less than good..."
He was getting angry. His face had turned into a scowl and his eyes appeared to have turned to stone.
"And now I think I'm going to be forced out of the group."
"Why do you say that?"
"After I told them they went out partying, when they got back I heard Chris say that they should tell me to either 'get straight or get out of NSYNC'"
I grabbed his hands and looked straight into his, trying my best to comfort him. He looked like he was on the verge of tears.
"I don't think you have to worry about an ultimatum."
"Why not?"
"When I came out to my best friend a few years ago, he freaked. He told me that I was going to burn in hell and he never wanted to see me again, a week later he in my living room begging for forgiveness. I think that if you give them a few days to adjust they'll come around."
"Do you think so, really?"
"Yeah, don't worry."
I could tell he was still worried, but what I said was helping him a little. I looked at a clock on the wall and noticed that it was almost 4:30.
"It's getting really late, or really early depending on how you look at it. I think we should get some rest."
"I don't want to go back to the hotel."
"Um... you can stay at my place if you like"
"Thanks."
Joey ended up paying the bill, when he was done we walked around the corner to my place. I yawned almost as soon as I walked in the door and decided that we should just head to bed. I decided to ask about the sleeping arrangements.
"Um... do you want the bed or the couch?"
"The bed, but I'd like to share it, if you're ok with that."
"Sure"
I was barely able to squeak that out. Now I'm going to be sharing a bed with a guy I've had a crush on for a while now. I reminded myself that I had to control myself, that he was emotionally drained and didn't need me hitting on him. I was thankful that I was too tired to try anything and crawled into bed and turned on my side facing away from him. I could feel him climb in next to me, and then I felt his arms slide around me. I smiled as I heard his breathing slow, and almost busted out laughing as he started to snore. It wasn't too loud and soon I found the sound lulling me to sleep.
