Lance's Song~ 6
Slowly Lance walked out, closing the door behind him. He needed to think about what had happened... what it meant. The stairs in front of him seemed to beckon, call, begging him to walk down stairs and out of the building. Carefully he walked one step at a time. Each step felt like he was moving feet of lead, he knew why too. He was leaving his heart behind, something he had sworn to himself that he would never do. But still he walked, confused, unsure.
Now he was on the street, pondering which way to go. It didn't really matter to him; either way led him away from where he truly wanted to be. He turned right, and began walking. His feet still felt like they were weighed down with a thousand pounds, if not more, but still he walked.
The streets were crowded, full of people and places that he had noticed before, but not now. Now he was to busy trying to distance himself from what he was feeling, trying to distance himself from what he knew was the biggest mistake of his life.
One hand went up and dragged itself slowly through his hair. The feel of the spikes on his hand didn't register. Nothing did. Not even the laughter, that the streets seemed to be filled with, registered. Lance was too busy questioning what was in his heart... in his mind. Why had he felt the need to leave Tyler. Why had he left him there, crying...
Crying for god's sakes! A tear began to gather in the corner of his eye and trickle down his cheek. He knew where he needed to be... wanted to be. But at the same time knew he shouldn't go back. Not until he figured out what his heart was trying to tell him about himself. Thoughts ran through his head, memories of the day he had just spent. Megan curled up against his chest, sleeping. The song that Tyler wrote... Lance knew the group was going to sing it, there was no doubt in his mind. And then. . . there was the kiss.
That was the one thing he had been trying not to think about. The sweet kiss that had meant so much to him it was impossible to explain. He had felt so loved during the duration of that kiss. His heart had felt free and his soul had felt chained. He was chained, to Tyler.
Why had he left? Lance questioned himself, running his hand once more through his hair. Why had he left Tyler sitting on the couch... all alone? He never wanted Tyler to be alone. He wanted to be with Tyler... always.
Maybe that was what he was running away from. His heart was falling so fast for someone that he had just met. Someone that he knew nothing about... nothing except how wonderful he was. How caring. How perfect. Lance shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. Maybe he should go back to the hotel. The streets were getting dark and he didn't really know his way around this city.
Reaching into his pocket, he dialed 411 and got the number of a local cab company. After giving directions to where he was, Lance settled down on the curb to wait. The kiss kept repeating in his mind, over and over again. He thought of how Tyler had leaned in, how he had met him half way. How wonderful their lips had felt pressed against each other.
It took the honking of the cab in front of him to drag Lance out of his daydream. Slowly he stood up, not really looking at what was around him, and walked to the cab. Once he was safely ensconced in the backseat, Lance gave the driver the address of the hotel. Then he settled back against the faded cloth seats, not paying attention to anything, until the song on the radio caught his ear.
I can read your mind
And I know your story
I see what you're going through yeah
It's an uphill climb
And I'm feelin sorry
But I know it will come to you yeah
Don't surrender
Cause you can win
In this thing called love
When you want it the most
There's no easy way out
When you're ready to go
And your heart's left in doubt
Don't give up on your faith
Love comes to those who believe it
And that's the way it is
When you question me
For a simple answer
I don't know what to say no
But it's plain to see
If you stick together
You're gonna find the way yeah
So, don't surrender
Cause you can win
In this thing called love
When you want it the most
There's no easy way out
When you're ready to go
And your heart's left in doubt
Don't give up on your faith
Love comes to those who believe it
And that's the way it is
When life is empty
With no tomorrow
And loneliness starts to call
(loneliness starts to call)
Baby don't worry
Forget your sorrows
Cause loves gonna conquer it all
When you want it the most There's no easy way out When you're ready to go And your heart's left in doubt Don't give up on your faith Love comes to those who believe it And that's the way it is
Listening to the words, Lance knew what he had to do. Slowly he found himself speaking the words he knew in his heart were the right one's to say.
" Actually, driver. Can you take me to another address?" He whispered. The driver agreed, and Lance found himself on the way back to Tyler, back to Megan. The words of the song kept running through his head, telling Lance that he was right. Love, even if it was unexpected, could be won if you were willing to work for it. Lance knew they could win because they felt such a kinship.
The cab slowed to a halt, and Lance, after paying the driver, climbed out. He stared at the building for a few minutes, unsure of what to do. Finally, he made up his mind, and walked forward, to the door. After pausing at the door, questioning himself if this was indeed the right thing to do, he turned the handle. This time the stairs were a lot easier to climb, his feet no longer felt like lead. They were taking him back to his heart, back to Tyler.
After what seemed like forever Lance found himself in front of Tyler's door. Bracing himself, he knocked Once, Twice. Then he stood there. A short time later the door opened, and much to Lance's surprise, he was staring at the face of a women...
" Who are you?" She questioned. Lance looked at her in shock. Finally he found his tongue
" L...L....Lance." He got out. She looked at him once, then shut the door in his face. Lance didn't even bother getting angry. He knew that he deserved that, and more.
Once more he knocked, harder this time. The door opened once again, and there stood the same women.
" You're not welcome here." She whispered, and prepared to shut the door. Lance stopped her by putting his foot in the doorway.
" Please." He whispered. " Let me talk to Tyler." The women didn't relent. Stubbornly, she tried to shut the door, despite Lance's foot being in the way. He didn't move his foot either, so the two of them stood there, willing the other to back down, back away. Lance tried again.
" Please. Let me at least explain..." he whispered. Finally, after much silence and staring, the women opened the door marginally. Lance slipped inside, and looked at her with thanks. He didn't say a word, just stood there. Waiting to be pointed in the right direction. The women nodded towards a closed door, and Lance silently thanked her.
His feet felt like they were weighed down again. He didn't care. He needed to talk to Tyler, to explain... He didn't know yet what he was going to say, but that didn't matter. If only he could make Tyler listen. Lance reached the doorway and knocked. A weak voice answered.
" Come on in Rachel." Lance entered, even though he wasn't Rachel. Tyler laid on his bed, covered with the blankets, looking at the Lance in surprise.
" What are you doing here?" He questioned his voice full of venom. Lance just stood there, barely inside the room, adjusting to what he was seeing.
" I asked you, what do you think your doing here? You left, remember?" Tyler said. Lance nodded.
" I did leave." He confirmed. Tyler looked at him.
" What are you doing back then?" He asked, still angry.
" I realized something." Lance replied. Tyler looked at him, and shook his head.
" Can't you just leave?" He asked. " Didn't you already put me through enough pain to last a life time?"
" I want to explain." Lance said. Slowly he walked over to Tyler, and without Tyler realizing his intentions, leaned down and kissed him. After a couple of sweet seconds, Tyler pushed him away.
" You can't kiss it all better Lance. You left me." Tyler shouted. Lance nodded.
" I...I know. I'm sorry. I'm not proud of that." He explained. Tyler looked at him in disbelief.
" Do you have any idea how much courage it took me to kiss you? How much of myself I put into that kiss? How scared I was?! And then you walked away... without saying a word! Without saying a fucking word!" Tyler was sceaming now.
" Did you ever stop to think that maybe I was scared too?" Lance screamed back, finally reaching the breaking point.
" Scared of what?" Tyler taunted.
" Scared of loosing you. Scared of loosing Megan. Scared of how much power you have over me in such a short amount of time!" He explained. Tyler looked at Lance, a little ashamed.
" No, I didn't Lance. I didn't know..." Tyler began. Lance interrupted him.
" We're both scared Tyler. Why don't we find our way out of this together?" Lance asked, Tyler nodded.
" We'll help eachother..." He whispered, holding his arms outstreached. Lance took the hint and climbed into the bed next to Tyler. Slowly, he turned and hugged Tyler close to himself, vowing never to let go again. Promises were made to be broken.
Okay folks... here is the special announcement I was talking about. I am in the process of writing a short story (nothing special...) and I figured whoever wanted a copy of it could e-mail me. Put the standard Lance's Song in the subject area. Once again, a reminder, my e-mail addy is Gemmini999@aol.com.
The short story is well, a short story. I'm not sure when it'll be finished, but it is pretty good (if I do say so myself...)
