Leaving Town Chapter 4
Late Sunday night I was in my room doing my homework when the phone rang.
"Hello"
"Is Cody there?" It was Brad, but something was wrong he did not sound very happy.
"Hey Brad, this is Cody, is something wrong? You sound upset"
"We are moving, my dad got a new job in Washington." Brad said
"WHAT" I said a little shocked
"I guess my parents finally decided to tell me, they have known for a week or so but didn't want to ruin the weekend we had planned."
"This sucks" was all I could say in my stunned state of mind.
"Tell me about, Dad is leaving tomorrow and me and mom are leaving as soon as he finds a house."
"What about your sister?"
"Mom and Dad said since she is almost done with school that she is going to stay with my aunt and finish the school year, they don't think it would be fair to her to make her move with only a couple months left in her senior year"
"Why don't you stay with your aunt?" I pleaded.
"I already asked, it did not go over too well."
"Dude this totally sucks" I said with disappointment in my voice.
"I know but there isn't a lot I can do about it buddy"
"I know"
"Hey I have to go mom needs the phone, see you tomorrow at school"
"Ok I'll talk to you tomorrow." With that said I slowly hung the phone up and lay back on my bed. "When ever something good happens some thing always screws it up," I thought to myself. The next thing I knew my mom was yelling at me to wake up. I opened my eyes and looked over at the clock. "7:30 I better get my ass moving." I thought. Fifteen minutes later I had showered dressed and was headed out the door to school. As I drove to school I kept thinking about all the fun I have had since I met Brad, and then I started thinking about him leaving. We would probably stay in touch for a few months but I knew how these things work, Brad will meet new people and before long we will lose contact with one another. My final thought as I pulled into the school parking lot was " I will never see him again." I parked my truck in my usual spot and headed inside. As I neared the entrance I looked up and there was Brad standing at the door waiting for me.
"Hey Cody what's up" Brad yelled.
"Hey Brad, not much just another Monday morning" I said putting on a smile and doing my best to hide my true feelings.
Brad and I made small talk as we entered the school and then headed our own directions agreeing to meet for lunch. The morning seemed to drag on and on, several times I was brought back to the real world by my teacher who thought it important that I actually paid attention in their classes. Lunch finally came around and I met up with Brad, Trey and Alex. Brad filled Alex in on the news since he was the only one that didn't know what was going on. As soon as Brad was finished telling Alex, Alex gave me a concerned look but I just looked the other direction. Alex was way smarter than anyone ever suspected, I knew he knew what was going through my mind, and I was sure he wouldn't say anything until I brought it up, Alex was a good listener, he never pushed you into anything. The rest of the day was uneventful and soon it was time to go home. Brad met me at my truck after school.
"Hey brad"
"What took you so long? You are usually waiting on me."
"Just in slow motion today I guess."
We jumped into my truck and headed home. Brad told me he had to go straight home and help his mom pack whichsurprised me, this was the first day since we had met that he hadn't stopped by my house before he went home. I dropped Brad off at his house and he told me that he would call me later that night. As soon as I got home I went up to my room and laid on my bed lost in my own thoughts. I am not sure how long I laid there but was brought out of my daze by the phone ringing. I jumped from my bed and grabbed the phone.
"Hello" I said
"Hey Cody, it'd Brad"
"Hey what's up?"
"I uh well have some more bad news"
"And that is?" not really wanting any more bad news.
"Well I have to leave tomorrow, dad found a place today and wants mom and I to come and check it out."
"So you will be back, I mean to get your stuff then, right?"
"Yeah we will be back this weekend, hey the other line is beeping, it's probably dad I better go"
"Ok, I will catch you this weekend, is that cool with you?"
"Yeah definitely, I'll see ya later"
"Later Brad" I hung the phone up, I just wanted to cry and it takes a lot to make me cry but this was just too much. About an hour later mom woke me and I got up and ate some dinner, the last thing I needed was my parents thinking something was wrong then I would have to explain everything to them, and that would never work. After dinner I went back to my room and tried to do some homework but eventually I gave up and went to bed.
The rest of the week went by slowly. I had slipped into some form of mild depression and Alex was the first to notice. He tried to talk to me but I wasn't interested in sharing this with anyone, at least not yet. Brad came home that weekend and I was in a little better mood. We spent the entire weekend together, well as much as we could any ways. I helped Brad and his family finish packing but all too soon it was time for them to leave. Brad and I said our good byes, all I really wanted to do was scream out loud but some how I kept my cool as I watched the only person who I have ever really connected with drive away.
That's all for now. Sorry for the wait on this chapter, will have the next one out a little sooner. Let me know what you think ski750@hotmail.com
