Leaving Town Chapter 5
A good fifteen minutes had passed while I stood on the sidewalk staring down the street. Alex had snuck up on me while I was in my own little world and thought it would be fun to honk his horn. The blast from his horn made me jump about ten feet as it scared the crap out of me. I turned around to see who the jackass was and there was Alex about in tears from laughing so hard. I did not find it as humorous as Alex but was soon laughing also.
"Didn't scare you did I?" Asked Alex.
"What the hell do you think" I said in my usual smart-ass tone.
"Sorry about that but you didn't even hear me drive up, you alright Cody?"
"Yeah I'm Ok, just a little disappointed is all"
"Get in the car I'll take you home"
"I don't really feel like going home just yet Alex," I said as I got into his car.
"We can just cruise around if you want"
"Yeah that would be cool." We drove around with no destination in mind for a while just listening to the radio before Alex broke the silence.
"Hey Cody"
"Yeah"
"Now just listen to me and let me say everything I've got to say before you interrupt, Ok?"
"Yeah I guess"
"Well I just want to say that I think I know what the deal was with you and Brad."
"What?"
"Hey I thought you were going to let me talk?" Alex said a little annoyed.
"Ok I'll shut up"
"Well as I was saying I think I know what's up. I can only guess this is real hard for you right now and you probably don't want to talk about it. I just want you to know that it is cool with me and I won't say anything to anyone about it. You are the same person I have known forever and this doesn't change anything. Ok?"
"Yeah" I replied barely audible.
"What?"
"Thanks Alex. And you are right I am not ready to talk about this yet."
"You aren't going to go and do something stupid are you? Because I would have to kick you ass." Alex said trying to lighten the mood.
"No I won't do anything stupid and when I am ready to talk I will let you know. By the way how did you get to be so cool?" I said with a snicker in my voice.
"Anytime you need anything just let me know"
"Same goes for you Alex, thanks again." With that the conversation was over. Alex dropped me off at my house about an hour later.
The next few weeks I was still a little down but seemed to be improving, I just kept myself as busy as I could and it seemed to be working. Alex was a lot of help also. He seemed to be around me whenever I was having trouble and always got me cheered up and back on track. If it were not for him I am not sure what would have happened. Trey and Lisa were still dating and the four of us continued to do a lot with each other. It was great being around Lisa because I could keep up on Brad and what he was doing.
Through out the next few months I returned to normal. Julie and I were dating and would often go out with Trey, Lisa, Alex and Shannon. Brad and I talked every once in a while on the phone but things didn't seem to be the same between us. Maybe it was because he had met new people or maybe we both subconsciously let go of things for our own good. Before we knew it we were graduating. I was a little disappointed that Brad didn't come with his parents to see Lisa graduate, but at the same time I think I was relieved that I wouldn't see him and bring back all the feelings I had managed to bury deep inside of me.
The summer after graduation the six of us, Trey, Lisa, Alex, Shannon, Julie and I spent together as much as we could between work and whatever else was going on. Trey went away to a two year school about an hour away, Lisa became a nanny for a while, Alex and Shannon also left and went to college about an hour away, Julie went to school on the east coast and I stayed in town and attended a local university.
Over the next two years I slowly lost direct contact with Brad, Trey would keep me informed through Lisa. I had learned that Brad and his parents had moved from Washington to Reno. I also learned that Brad had become somewhat of a troublemaker and was always in trouble at school. Lisa told me that his new friends were most of the problem. Lisa eventually convinced me that maybe if I called and talked to him it might help. I did eventually call and talk to Brad but I don't think it did much good as he continued to get drunk and stoned all the time.
During that two-year period Alex had some problems also but as I had promised him a year ago I did whatever I could to help him out. Alex eventually moved back to town, in fact he moved in with me in a house I was living in while going to college. We became even closer friends than we had been. I looked out for Alex and he looked out for me. Alex lived with me for a year and then found a good job out of state. Shannon moved with Alex and they began a new life together. Alex would call me or I would call him at least once a week. We would still help each other with any problems we had and if it were in the middle of the night when we needed to talk it didn't matter we would still call each other. Like I said we had become the closest of friends. Little did I know that would not last forever either.
During my first year of college I met a wonderful girl. We started dating and got along great together. She filled the void that was left by all my friends going off to college and also kept my now forgotten hidden desires buried deep inside me.
On December 21 of my junior year of college I received a phone call that changed my life.
"Hello"
"Cody" A shaky voice asked.
"Yes this is Cody," I said as chills began to run through my body, I knew that something bad had happened to someone.
"This is Jon Alex's dad, I have some bad news, Alex is dead."
"What"
"He was killed late last night in an accident, I know how close you guys were and I didn't want you to hear it from someone else"
I was speechless; I don't even remember the rest of the conversation. My mind was going through all the good times we had had in the past. I sat in a daze for several minutes before I picked up the phone and started calling all of our friends to give them the news. It was by far the hardest thing I had ever done in my short life. Suddenly all of the feelings I had buried deep down came crashing back to the surface. Alex was the only one who knew me, he knew the real me and it had made no difference to him, I was still the same person I had always been to him and now I was truly alone.
The funeral was a couple days later. Trey and I along with four other friends were the pawl bearers. When the funeral was over everyone was invited to a reception. I was sitting at a table talking with Alex's older brother when I looked up to the door in time to see someone that I had not seen in years walk through. It was Brad.
That's all for now. Let me know what you think. Ski750@hotmail.com
