Life After Mike
Jerry, Paul and Mrs O'leary were all sitting at Mrs. O'Leary's house, they now had the the distintion of having to accomplishing two things, first was to be able to cope with the incredible loss of someone that was so close to and so Loved by all three of them, and secondly, trying to move on with their lives, and try to make some sense of what had happened, the silly thing is the statements that people make. Things like " OH MY GOD, HE WAS SO YOUNG " or " HE IS MUCH BETTER OFF NOW " or " AT LEAST HE IS NOT SUFFERING ANY MORE. These are all good, honest, and noble sentiments, they really are said to make someone who is a friend or aquantance feel good, the loved ones and family are selfish when it comes to loved ones all the sentiments in the world will not bring their loved one back or make it any easier to accept the fact that the loved one is gone and that the hole in the heart that was left by his or her passing, will take forever to fill, there are no overnight fixes, no easy way of making things better, the cold hard facts are your loved one is gone, there is nothing you can do but accept that fact. That was the challenge that the three of them now had to face, the good thing is that they have each other.
Jerry looked at Paul and said, you must have been very special to Mike, he took the time to make sure that he brought us together, he must have thought about us being together for a long time, he planned this out, I will give it every chance to make it work.
Paul looked at Jerry, he spoke very quietly, and said Mike was the only person that knew I was gay, he kept my secret, as he said he would until the day he died, he knew that I loved you, he also knew that I would not act on those feelings because he loved you so much, my only regret, is that I did not break my promise to him, I should have told you how much he cared, we had a bond that was strong and I would never break that bond. When I found out he was sick I pleaded with him to tell you, he was afraid it would ruin the friendship that the two of you shared, your friendship made him much stronger, your love make him whole.
Mrs. O'Leary looked at both of the boys and said, my son was so fortunate to be loved by the two people that meant the most to him, we had many conversations about the both of you, Paul was the confidant that everyone needs, the person that you can tell you deep dark secrets to knowing they would be safely tucked away and guarded with the utmost respect, Jerry, Mike told me he was gay when he started the seventh grade, that was when he also told me that he thought that he loved you, it was not soon after that he told me that he wished he could spend the rest of his life making you happy, shortly after that he was not feeling to well one day and we went to the doctor's, that was when we found out he had cancer, that was when he decided that he would never tell you as he did not want to lose you as a friend, I pleaded with him to tell you , that your friendship was strong and would see you through, Mike thought it would destroy your friendship and put his love for you on hold,
Paul spoke up and said mom, do you remember the night when Mike and I were in his room playing games and he suddenly got real sick, we spent nearly the entire night at the hospital, I was crying my eyes out and you kept telling me that it would be ok, I fell asleep on your lap, and then you woke me and said we can see him now, The last thing you said to me was no matter how bad he looked that we had to be strong and show no signs of panic or fear, you help me through that that night aand I decided that he would never see me cry or faulter in front of him.
Mrs.O'Leary looked at Paul and said, your devotion and the love that he recieved from you, Paul was something that was very dear to him, I think that if he had not been so much in love with Jerry, you would have been the object of his affection, he may not have said it much but he loved you and thought the world of you Paul, you could not have been a better friend to him. Jerry I could say so many things about you, Mike loved you, he thought the sun rose and set in you, he would pray every night that one day you would walk up to him and say those four magic words, " MIKE I LOVE YOU. " his world revolved around you, he would spend hours each day telling me and Paul how he cared for you, but he held us to secrerecy and made us promise not to breathe a word of it to you. What we need to do now is help each other get through this very trying time, together we can make each other stronger, and help each other mourn. You are both welcome to stay here any time you like and for as long as you like.
Jerry looked at Paul and asked are you staying here tonight?
Paul said that he was planning on staying for a while.
Jerry asked would you mind some company in that large bed tonight?
Paul smiled and said there is alwaays room in my bed for you Jerry.
Jerry said I am not ready to do anything with anybody!
Paul smiled and said, well then you won't be disappointed when nothing happens
Mrs. O'Leary asked to talk to Paul by himself, Jerry said I understand and he went down the hall to Mike's old room. Paul how is the problem between you and your father coming along.
Paul said mom I have tried everything, he just does not me there and could care less about me, he walked over and hugged her and started to cry, what am I going to do, he wants me out of there.
Mrs. O'Leary asked did you ever talk to Mike about this, and what did he say.
Paul said yes Mike and I talked about it a lot, he said that if my dad through me out that I could come and stay here with him, I don't know what to do now that Mike is gone, I am just lost.
Mrs. O'leary smiled and said, Paul you are not the only person left holding a note, she opened her purse and took out a piece of paper and handed it to Paul.
Paul had a puzzled look on his face.
Mrs. O'Leary said open it and read it.
Paul opened the piece of paper, he started to read the note, it went.
My Dear Friend Paul,
If you are reading this note, then you are very much aware of my death. I have talked to mom in great length about what is written in this note, Please accept my offer even though i am no longer here, I would be very honored if you would consider becoming my brother legally so you could take care of mom, I won't take no for an answer, that way you can look after mom and Jerry.
Mom has already agreed to adopt you if you are willing please say yes,
Love you always, Your Older Brother Mike
Paul had tears running down his cheeks, I just can't imagine not having Mike around, he is taking care of me now even after he is gone, God I Miss Him So Much. Paul looked at mom and said I would be thrilled to have you as my mom, and just knowing that Mike is my brother, will be like he will always be with me.
Jerry came back and asked if he could come in and sit down?
Paul told Jerry about the note and what it said, Jerry smiled and said you know I would not be surprised if the papers are not all ready to go, then he turned and looked at Mrs. O'Leary and said, am I right
Mrs. O'Leary smiled and looked at both of them and pulled out the papers out of her purse, she handed them to Paul and said have your dad sign them and it is all legal.
Paul walked over and kissed her and said thanks, now when I call you mom it will be for real.
Jerry walked over and hugged Paul and said I am so happy for you, now if no one minds I will go into the kitchen and make dinner.
Paul said if you don't mind I would like to help.
Jerry said I think that we should get used to being around each other after all we are going to be a couple , you and I need to get to know each other better and become closer.
the boys finished making dinner, they all ate, and the boys cleaned up the kitchen, they all went into the living room and watched TV, and at about 10:00 the boys said good night and headed to their bedroom. they got undressed and climbed into bed.
Jerry said good night.
Paul said good night and asked do you mind if I just hold on to you?
Jerry said I can go one better than that, he said come here and Paul scooted up next to Jerry and Jerry put his arm around Paul and pulled him close,
Paul put his head on Jerry 's chest and was asleep in a matter of minutes.
Jerry rested his head on the top of Paul's head and drifted off to sleep....
