Life In Zach's Eyes (Chapter 3)

I was just running. I don't know where I was running to, and I could really care less. Of course the tears in my eyes didn't really help my vision. But it didn't matter, because if a car did run me over at least I wouldn't have the pain that was there inside me. He hated me now, I was sure of it. I saw that look of confusion and bewilderment that hit me like a knife. And no, I am not being dramatic. For those of you who have been in love or are in love, you know what I am talking about. There is that one person that from the moment you see them you know that you are meant to be with them and when they hate you it feels like a thousand daggers being instantly plunged into your heart.

Finally I just stopped running (actually my legs couldn't bear it anymore) and dropped down exactly where I was. I saw that I had finally ended up on my hill. Its this kinda big hill that's not too far from my house where I would' go when I needed to be alone or to just clear my mind. Jen and I would go there often to just talk about life and anything else that we needed to. It was weird even though I didn't know where I was going my body knew that I was upset and took me to the one place that it knew I go when I am upset. I thanked myself mentally for that.

I just lay there for what seemed to be ages just staring up at the sky. Thinking of what had just happened. I thought that now I would have to avoid him all the time to keep from getting ridiculed or worse hurt. Of course that would be kind of hard seeing as I would see him pretty much everyday since his house was on the way to school. I guess I was just going to have to find another way to walk to school. Sigh I must have dozed off because the next thing that I remember is being kicked in the side and opening my eyes to see Jen looming over me with a "I am going to kill you in cold blood" look on her face.

"You stupid idiotic jerk. Don't you think of anyone besides yourself? Do you have any idea how worried I have been about you? You scared us all. What were you thinking running off like that without telling anyone where you were going? What if you had been run over by a car or worse..."

I knew that I had to interrupt her before she blew a gasket. "I'm sorry mom I wasn't really thinking about that. And anyway what's the problem you found me without much trouble it looks like." I said insistently.

"Well that's just me. I know where to look for you. Believe it or not, but you aren't that hard to figure out. But besides me everyone was worried sick about you. You're just lucky that you had study hall last period or you might have been marked as cutting. I told the supervisor that you were in the bathroom and not feeling too well. She bought it I think."

"That's good. Thanks Jen you're the best. I don't know what I would do without you." I gave her a big hug and held her tight as if she might have blown away.

"I love you too hun, but I can't breathe. Do you mind letting go before I run purple?"

I quickly let go of her. "Ha ha sorry bout that."

"No prob. Now would you mind telling me why you ran out in the middle of lunch and made everyone sick with worry about you." As she was saying that she got up in my face real close. I figured that I was due for a good laugh, so I gave her a quick kiss on the lips and then quickly backed off, cracking up in the mean time, to avoid her wrath.

"Zach you can be so immature! I was being serious." She chased me down and tackled me, landing on top of course. "Now are you going to tell me what I want to know or am I going to have to get rough with you?"

"Hmmmmm? I think I like the sound of that second one. What exactly did you have in mind?" I winked at her.

"You can be such a perv you know that?" She gave me a shove that knocked me onto my side laughing.

When things had calmed down and we had both stopped laughing I said it. "It was Lane."

"Lane? What did he do? Should I go and kill him for you now?"

"Ha ha. No but see he found out that I'm gay. And then he tried to blackmail it out of me by saying that I had to let him fuck me."

"That bastard. I knew that he was acting especially cocky when he got back from the bathroom. I am going to kill that little dickhead. I swear he is dead!"

"Thanks for the offer Jen, but that's not what made me breakdown. Cody walked in to the bathroom as Lane was saying that. He practically punched Lanes lights out, which I thought was really sweet of him. But then Lane had to open his big fat mouth and told Cody that I was just a 'cocksucker' and he shouldn't care. You should have seen the look in Cody's eyes Jen he looked so confused. I was so sure that he hated me now, so I just ran. I didn't know what else to do."

"So I was right. You really did have the hots for Cody. I knew that I wasn't just imagining it."

"How did you know?"

"Oh come on I saw you. The way you looked at him, either he was really hideous or you were crushing on him. And seeing how he looked option one didn't really apply."

"Was I really that obvious?"

"Please hun you were practically drooling."

"Do you think that he noticed it?" I gave her a worried look.

"Who? Cody? Of course he didn't notice. He's a guy. And unless you haven't noticed most guys are oblivious to things like that."

"Yeah? Well Lane noticed. That's how he said he knew that I was gay."

"Like I said. Guys are oblivious. Lane is so gay that I'm actually surprised that his dick hasn't turned into a vagina already."

Ok, now that was enough to make me crack up again. And it didn't really help that she was actually serious when she said that. I just couldn't help it.

"You know Zach you are such a dork. Can't you be at least a little bit serious?"

"Gimme a break. At least I'm not crying like before. I'm sure that Cody hates me now."

"Sure didn't look like he hated you."

"What are you talking about?"

"He looked all over for you. He was the one that let me know that you were gone."

"Ya he was probably just looking for me so that he could beat the crap out of me."

"Zach why do you have to be so hard headed. Isn't it possible that he was worried about you? You just disappeared without saying anything to him."

"I didn't know what else to do at that moment. I was scared. Running was the only thing that seemed reasonable at the moment."

"I think that you should talk to him. Let him know what you're feeling. Tell him why it was that you ran. I am sure that he will understand. He seems like a really nice guy and he deserves at least an explanation."

"Maybe you're right."

"Maybe? When have I been wrong? Trust me about this Zach I am your best friend and I would never tell you to do something I thought would hurt you. Go and talk to him. You never know what you might find out about someone if you just talk to them."

"Ok, you do have a point. I will go and talk to him. Thanks Jen. And I meant what I said before I really don't know what I would do without you."

"Well for one you would still be sleeping on top of a hill worried about your feelings."

"Ha ha ha. You're funny." I said in a sarcastic tone.

"I know I am. I didn't need you to tell me that." She said smugly. "Now let's go."

"Where are we going?"

"My house."

"But I thought that you wanted me to talk to Cody. Why are we going to your house?" I looked puzzlingly at her.

"Where do you think he is?"

"Wait a second. What is he doing at your house in the first place?"

"I left him there with Cassie unless you decided to call and I couldn't find you. I figured that the first one you would call would be me when you finally got tired of being alone."

"It amazes me." I said smiling at her.

"What does?"

"How you seem to know me so well. I was actually planning to call you soon to talk to you about what had happened."

"It's not that hard to figure you out honey. Plus the fact that you tell me everything kind of helps to know how you think."

"You really are the best." I put my arm around her and gave her shoulder a squeeze.

"I already knew that. Now let's go. I'm getting tired of this hill, plus it's already kind of becoming chilly."

"You got it." We started to walk down the hill and towards Jen's house. Which was conveniently located only about a block away from the hill. So we got there in about 5 or 6 minutes, which was good because I was so exhausted mentally that I really didn't feel like walking too far. Well that and I can be pretty lazy. (Thank god for my fast metabolism or I'd be well over 200lbs by now.) Just as we got in front of her house the door flew open and out came Cassidy charging at me. She got me in a big hug and seemed to not want to let go. So she started to yell at me then (Her head was on my shoulder so naturally she was yelling into my ear. And believe me Cassie is a pretty loud girl when she wants to be. Of course right now she had to be extra loud, trying to get her point across I thought).

"You in sensitive jerk! I was so worried about you! Never do that to me again! If you ever decide to run off again at least tell me where you are going! Because if you don't I swear..."

Like Jen I had to cut her off only this time for fear of permanently loosing my hearing as well as her needing to breath. "I'm ok Cass I'm just fine. And I am sorry that I made you worry. I promise I won't ever do that again."

"You'd better not!" She continued yelling. Thankfully it wasn't in my ear anymore. "Now do you mind explaining to me why you had to run off and nearly give as all a hear attack."

"It's a long story. Can we talk about it later? Please?"

"Ya ok. I'm kinda tired myself. After an eventful day like today I think I just want to plop down and fall asleep. You had us all worried sick you know that. Me, Jen, Tessa, Josh, Alex, Cody..."

"Cody? He was really worried about me?"

"Ya dude, I was."

I looked up to see who said that and there was Cody standing in the doorway looking at me with his beautiful eyes. But there was something different about them this time. I couldn't put my finger on it because he was too far away for me to be able to tell. "Really Code?"

"Of course. You scared me when you just ran of like that without saying anything. I didn't know if I had done something to make you made at me. Or if it was something else." He started to walk toward me.

Jen sensed that we should probably be left alone at the moment and took Cassie's hand. "Hey Cass, I'm starving after all that. How about you come and help me fix up something in the kitchen?" And with that they both disappeared into the house.

When Cody stood right in front of me I was able to see that his eyes were red, as if he had been crying. "I really was worried about you Zach. You were the first person that had really talked to me in this town and actually went as much as to befriend me. I felt some sort of connection with you. And then this whole thing happened with Lane and you ran off. I couldn't help thinking that something bad could happen to you, and then it would have bee all my fault. But seeing that you're ok is just awesome." He came up to me and gave me a big hug that kind of took me off guard.

I smiled at him, "I'm so happy. I thought that you hated me, and that's why I ran."

"Hate you? For what, being gay? Of course not, Zach, I'm gay too."

"You are? But that look that you gave me in the bath room?"

"That's because I had a hard time believing that a guy as hot as you could possibly be gay."

"You've gotta be kidding me. I was thinking the absolute same thing about you."

"Ya. But there's one more thing."

"What is it?" I asked

"I don't know how to tell you this."

"Just say it Cody in a way that is most comfortable."

"Well right now what feels more comfortable is this." He took a step closer to me, leaned in and, softly yet still with passion pressed his lips to mine. I was completely taken off guard. I couldn't believe, my first kiss and its with Cody. I wasn't sure what to do, so I did the only thing that felt natural, I returned the kiss. The only word that I could think of to describe was "Wow". It wasn't filled with lust, just pure love. He put his arms around me and pulled me closed to him. Everything about that moment just felt completely right. It seemed to last for ages, of course it was probably only minutes, but eventually we had to pull apart.

"Wow, Cody that was amazing."

"I know, but not as amazing as you are."

"Cody?"

"Ya Zach."

"Can I ask you something?"

"You can ask me anything you want babe."

He called me "babe" that was so cute. "Do you want to be my boyfriend? It's ok if you don't but I just wanted to ask because I think I feel something with you and..."

He put his finger on my lips to quiet me down (ya sometimes I tend to ramble on and on). "What do you think?" And with that we kissed for the second time that night. This one however was a bit deeper and a lot more passionate.

Then I heard a rustling in the bushes and saw a flash go off and someone say, "Gotcha."
