Lil Bros Chapter 21
In the lobby Scott and the two boys were rushed outside and across the parking lot. Feeling the elevator jolt to a stop startled Michael for a second, then realizing what had happened he mentally kicked himself before grabbing the phone and calling for help. "Front desk, please wait, we have emergency personnel on their way."
"This is Michael Caine, how long before they get here?" Michael asked.
"It should be a few minutes, then they will have to check the floors before they can get to you."
"Listen very carefully, I am between the eleventh and twelfth floor, you can tell the people that as soon as they get here, if I don't hear from them shortly afterwards you will be finding a new job."
"You will have to wait, just like everyone else, you don't own the building."
"Like hell I don't, in fact I want you go outside and find a Lt. Lightfingers and put him on the phone."
"Young man I do not take orders from you." The clerk stated just before hanging up.
Being trapped didn't make Michael made, but having to put up with snotty, obnoxious people did. Grabbing his cell phone, Michael looked to see if he had a signal. Smiling to himself Michael called Sam and asked for Lightfingers' cell number. "Michael I don't have his number, I just have the number for Jamie Algraves, do you want that one?"
"No, but you can call Algraves and have him pass a message on to Lightfingers, tell him I am stuck between floors and that the desk clerk should be escorted off the property right away."
"What do you mean you're stuck between floors?"
"I will explain later, right now I need Lightfingers help."
"Okay, give me five minutes."
"Like I am going anywhere. I am just concerned about my brother and Derrick."
"I understand that, but just relax. Is Scott with them?"
"I don't know, I forgot some things in my room when this stuff happened, now quit asking questions and get me some help, please?"
Okay brat."
Hanging up Michael sat on the floor resting against the wall, the dim emergency light not even casting a shadow. Closing his eyes Michael thought about all that had happened over the past four years, the loss of his family, the death of Tommy and now the two boys in his care. Thinking about his brother Adam brought tears to his eyes, he would be fourteen now and full of fun. Still crying Michael was startled when he heard someone on top of the cage at the same time his cell phone chirped. Looking up he watched the roof as he answered his phone. "Michael here, what's up?" Michael asked.
"This s Morgan, are you okay Mr. Caine?"
"Well if you call being trapped in an elevator is okay, then yes I am fine, now what is happening out there, is my brother and friends okay?"
"Yes they are fine, they are being watched by the state police, right now let's try and get you out of there and back with them."
"I think that is a great idea, just how do you plan on that though?"
"There should be someone dropping down to you right now."
"I heard something land on top, but then nothing."
"That is strange, when did you hear this?"
"Same time you called."
"Weird, I called just as the fire department got here, so no one should be anywhere near you. Listen I don't want you to touch anything except your phone. I know you have used the elevator phone, but now don't."
"You're the boss for now." Chuckling Michael hung up and tried to relax. Closing his eyes Michael sat there.
Outside Scott sat on the grass with Cory and Derrick curled up beside him. All three were watching the police and firemen running in and out. They were also watching to see if f Am chapel came out. Cory was frowning and trying hard not to cry. "Is daddy coming soon Uncle Scott?" Cory asked.
"Yes he will, we just have to stay here until he does."
"Uh huh, hope it soon." Derrick whispered.
"It will be, then we can all go eat."
Inside the hotel the police had pried the elevator doors open on the fourteenth floor and had shone a light down. The scene that greeted them was gruesome, the body of a woman lay twisted and bloody. "Hello in the elevator, this is the police are you okay?"
"Yeah I am fine, how soon before you can get me out of here?" Michael hollered back.
"Well that is the problem, from what we can see it is going to be a few hours, unless we can get the doors between the floors open and you can crawl out."
"Do whatever you have to, but make it quick I have family out there waiting for me."
"We'll do what we can."
As Michael was busy talking to the police, Lightfingers and Morgan had made their way to the fourteenth floor and with the help of a couple of fire personnel and axes they were able to pry the door open about 18 inches. "Mr. Caine this is Lt. Lightfingers can you crawl through here." Carl asked.
"I think so just give me a hand up."
Reaching through the gap Morgan extended his arm as far as he could. "Here kid reach up and grab on."
"Don't call me a kid." Michael said as he grabbed Morgan's wrist. "Okay pull."
Michael was have way through the doors when the pry bar slipped and the doors closed on him. Screaming Michael cursed everyone and everything around him. "Can't you people do anything right?" He hollered as both Morgan and Lightfingers pulled on the doors.
"Listen kid we are doing everything we can, now stop bitching and relax." One of the fire crew snapped.
"Just hurry the dang thing is hurting my ribs."
"Well quick talking and take it easy, we'll have you out in a second."
It took the four people another forty minutes to get Michael out of the doors, then both Morgan and Lightfingers helped him down to the paramedics waiting outside. When the paramedics had finished checking him out and told Michael that he had a few bruised ribs, they let him go. Looking around he walked over to Where Scott and his brothers were, giving Scott a quick kiss he smiled. "Let's go eat, I'm hungry." Michael whispered.
"Daddy you okay?" Cory asked taking Michael's hand.
"I will be when we have eaten squirt."
"We still going to that barbecue place?" Derrick smiled.
"Yes we are, we just have to stop and pick up a disposable camera."
"Mr. Caine, can we have a word with you?" A police officer asked.
"Not right now, I am going with my family to eat, you can tell the management that I want the elevators working by the time I get back. At that time we can talk, not before." Michael snapped back. His whole day had been one screw up after another. Now he just wanted to relax and get the day over with.
"Mr. Caine, you don't understand, we found something on top of the elevator, and since you were in there we were hoping you can help us."
"What part of not right now don't you understand?"
"I can have you detained for refusing to help in and investigation."
"Try it and you will have a whole sack of lawyers biting your ass. Now get the hell out of my face."
Turning Michael and his group walked away, leaving the officer standing there opened mouth. Walking down the street Michael kept the two young boys between Scott and himself. After a quick stop at a 7-11 for a camera the boys finally made it to the restaurant. There they had to wait for thirty minutes for a table even though they had reservations. Fuming at the delay Michael called for the manager and told him off. What neither the host nor manager knew was that this particular restaurant was one of the places that belonged to Aphex holdings, and Aphex was Michael's. Company. When the meal was over and the pictures taken, Michael took the bill and wrote complimentary on it before handing it back to his waitress. The waitress seeing what he had done stood in shock before taking it too her boss. "Sir, what is the meaning of this?" The manager asked.
"Just what it says."
"Sir, you cannot write on your bill that the meal was free, if you did then everyone else will do it."
"No, and I can do it because I own the damn restaurant, plus the fact that you had me and my family waiting, when in fact there were tables available, if that is how you run things then I would suggest you find another job."
"I apologize sir, I wasn't aware of who you were, we normally have your parents come in, though it has been a few years."
"That is because they died."
"I am sorry to hear that, I wish you all the best and hope that your future is brighter."
"Thank you. I shall inform you now that should anyone of my brothers here, or my partner come in for a meal it too will be on the house. As long as my family owns the restaurant they will be treated the same way that includes any grandchildren."
Very well sir I shall make a note of it for all staff."
"Good, oh one final thing you can relieve the host of her duties."
When Michael and the boys got back to their hotel, they found that the elevators were still not working and that the police had closed off the fourteenth floor to everyone. With everything that had happened over the past week and now hearing that he couldn't get the two young boys into their suite and bed Michael just snapped. "Scott go get the car." Turning he looked at the desk clerk. "In the morning, I want all our belongings packed and shipped to my home in Florida, the hotel will pay for that to be done."
"Mr. Caine," Lightfingers started to say. "Just what are you planning to do, it is nine o'clock?"
"Well I can do one of two things, one fine another hotel for the night, or I can start heading home. The more I think about it the more home sounds better."
"You cannot drive all night." Morgan said looking at Michael.
"Want to bet?"
"No, I don't, but I don't think it would be a good move. How are we going to watch over you, furthermore, how are the others going to find us if we are on the road?"
"Right now, I don't give a care, I have had enough of the garbage that I have had to. Now, we are leaving, you two decide what the hell you want. Come on guys, Scott should be out front."
Taking Cory and Derrick's hand, Michael turn red and left the lobby. Scott had just pulled up when the three walked out the front door. Making sure that the two little ones were buckled in Michael looked at Scott. "Well should we head home now or wait until morning?"
"We could drive for a few hours, maybe get out of the state, then we could find a place for the night, but that is up to you."
"Let's get out of the state. I am sure the two in back would like to get home."
"I know I would, I kind of miss seeing my family."
"That I can understand, way more than you think."
Texas was a short memory for the boys by midnight, and the state of Louisiana was just in front of them. Finding a small town Scott who had been driving looked around and found a small motel not far off the highway. Staying with the two sleeping boys, Scott just smiled. "You better make it quick, those two are going to start snoring any second now."
"We not sleeping." Derrick mumbled while trying to hide his yawn.
"Good, that means we don't have to carry you inside." Michael laughed.
"Meanie." Derrick said as he stuck out his tongue.
Getting a room for the four was easy. Michael just gave the night clerk his gold Aphex charge card and then signed the bill. "If you need anything else sir, please don't hesitate the call me." The girl said with a smile.
"I don't think I will, but if I do then I will be sure to call."
Once Michael was out of the office he shuddered, then laughed. Getting the others Michal led them to their room for the night. Cory and Derrick just took off the shoes before laying down and falling back to sleep. Michael stripped to his short then headed for the shower. Stopping to look at himself in the mirror he saw the bruises that the doors had caused and he cursed. Now that he really cared on how he looked, it was just the thought of what had happened that upset him. "Are you going to shower or just stand there?" Scott asked as he stepped in.
"Huh, oh shower. I was just trying to see how bad the bruises were.
"Well they're not that bad. Soon you will be a nice ugly green." Scott chuckled.
"I guess that means no playing until I heal." Michael grinned. This caused Scott to frown then smile.
"Oh I don't know, maybe we can just cuddle for a few nights. You know I miss doing that."
"I know, but I think we both know too that the boys come first and right now Derrick needs use both."
"I know that. Derrick is a lot like you, holding everything in."
"Give him time, besides I think that when we get home he will open up more, especially too Cory."
"Could be you're right, just wish you could have done that, maybe you wouldn't be so uptight. Thing is I love you just the way you are. Now get in the shower."
"Would love to, but someone took it before I could.
"What's wrong with sharing?" Scott grinned.
It was just over an hour later that the two older boys dried off and claimed into their bed. Both cuddled up tight to each other. The sound of the shower woke Michael. Glancing at his watch he saw that it was seven thirty. From the sounds of giggling coming from the bathroom he knew that Cory and Derrick were in there.
Giving Scott a kiss on the cheek, Michael slipped from the bed and quickly dressed. He had just gotten his shirt on when the two boys came running out in just their under shorts. "Morning daddy, how you feeling today?" Cory asked as he started dressing.
"Much better thank you, what about you two, are you both doing well."
"Uh-huh." Cory mumbled. Then gave Michael a hug, before pouncing on Scott. "Wake up Uncle Scott, I am hungry."
"Nah, I think I will sleep all day." Scott grumbled, then smiled.
"Nu-uh we got to get home."
"Oh all right if you say so, big man."
"Uncle Mike?" Derrick started to ask. "Where will I be staying when we get back?"
"Well Derrick, until Mr. Johnson can see if any of your relatives can take you. Mr. Johnson and the judges have agreed to let you live with Cory and I, but that is s only if you want too."
"Are you kidding, course I want to. I get a super keep big brother, and get to live with my best friend, that is like finding gold." Derrick said with a wide smile.
Splitting the driving between them, the four boys were back in Naples by ten that night. The sight of the house was a welcome sight for Cory and Derrick. Just after stopping Cory giggled. "Daddy, can we go swimming?"
"Not tonight, right now I want you both to go in and have a shower, while I get out some ice cream."
"Can I have some chocolate sauce and whip cream?" Cory asked.
"Why don't I just make us some banana splits?" Michael said with a grin.
"Yummy." Derrick giggled as he ran up the stairs.
Sunday and Monday, the three boys stayed home and relaxed. Scott had gone home Sunday morning saying that he would see everyone on Tuesday when they took the boys to register for school. After that they would go clothe shopping and see if they could go over to the Alston house to get the things Derrick would need and want.
On Monday, Michael called the Naples police and spoke with a Captain Harris. "Mr. Caine, the Alston house is still sealed, as the police are still investigating things."
"Well are they looking at a nine year old, too see if he had anything to do with what his mother did?" Michael asked.
"No."
"Well then derrick should be able to get his belongings."
"I can ask the investigating officers if they will allow that, but I can't promise anything."
"Well then I guess you do that, while I phone Judge Montoya and get his approval."
"Mr. Caine, I really don't think we have to go that far. What I can do is meet you over at the Alston home and you can get his belongings." Harris said trying to avoid any hassles.
"Derrick and I will be there tomorrow at two, I expect you to be there."
After calling and talking to Harris, Michael got himself a soda before going to the front room and turning on the T.V. Watching the news was nothing if not boring. Going to bed Michael enjoyed the comfort of his own bed, but was soon joined by both Cory and Derrick.
The next morning after breakfast, Maria, Michael's housekeeper sent the boys off for the day. "Mr. Caine, sometime this morning I am going to have to go shopping. Is there anything you specifically want or need?" She asked.
"For me just keeping the house in juice or soda is fine, it might be a good idea though to talk with Derrick, see if he is allergic to anything."
"I'll do that right away, I know you have a busy morning so I don't want to keep you. Before I forget I out a couple large envelopes on your desk."
"Thank you Maria, now I had better get ready before the two little ones start yelling." Michael said with a laugh.
After her talk with Derrick, Maria got the rest of the house cleaned before she too had left. Scott, Richie, Peter and Mrs. P. Met Michael and the two boys at the entrance to the mall, all three boys receiving hugs and a welcome home before proceeding into the food court where they all had something more to drink.
After their drinks the seven spent the rest of the morning shopping. Michael left after asking Mrs. P to watch the boys for about ten minutes as he needed not go and get a fee things that he didn't want the boys to see. Going across the hall and down three stores Michael stepped into the jewelers and asked to see a couple of small gold friendship bands. The clerk just smiled as she showed Michael some really cheap pieces. "Don't you have anything better, these things will either fall off or break within a week." Michael asked.
"Well we do, but I don't think you can afford them."
"You let me decide on that. Now may I see the best you have?"
"Young man I am not bringing out our best, that..."
"I tell you what miss. Go get the manager and I shall deal with him. I don't like you uppity attitude."
"Well let me call security, I am sure they can have you removed." The clerk snapped.
"You do that, in the meantime get you manager out here, and I mean NOW?"
"There is no need to yell Michael, I have been here listening. Now what can I get you."
"I am after two small wrist bands for my brother and his best friend, and I don't want something cheap like she was trying to sell me."
"Well now, if I remember correctly the last time you were here, you spent almost twenty thousand dollars. I won't go the high since it is for two little ones, but I do have something I am sure you and they will like." The manager stated as he walked over to one of the display cases. "These pieces are expensive, but can be adjusted as the boys grow older."
Looking at the pieces, Michael could only smile, the gold bands only highlighted the ruby and sapphire stones. "I'll take two of these, plus two plain 24 karat ones, I don't want the boys wearing these two too school where someone might steal them." Michael said with a grin.
The store clerk stood watching the manager and Michael, her eyes like saucers as she watched Michael pick out two pieces that were almost 2500 dollars. She was more surprised when he picked out the gold bands and chains to match. Cursing herself, the clerk's face turned red as she watched her commission go out the door. She was shaped out of her daze when she heard the manager talking to Michael. "Well Michael the total is 11 thousand and that is with a 25% discount. I do hope you will come back again."
"I think that is a great possibility, as long as I deal directly with you." Michael said as he picked up his packages.
After shopping and having a light lunch, the two families headed home. Derrick and Cory then spent time taking the tags off their clothes and stacking them in the laundry room for Maria to wash. With that done the three then drove over to the Alston home. Michael had been keeping a close eye on Derrick, he was worried that Derrick might break down, but that didn't happen, instead Derrick just walked up to the door and stood there, his hand resting on the door handle. "Uncle Michael, are you coming in with me?" Derrick asked.
"If you want me too. I just thought you might want to do this alone."
"I thought I could do it by myself, but now I can't."
"That is okay, at least you tried, and there is nothing wrong with wanting help, especially for something this hard."
"Uncle Michael, why didn't my parents love me?"
"Oh I think they did love you, it is just that they couldn't get along with each other. Remember buddy that what happened is not your fault."
"I feel like it is."
"That is normal for anyone, more so, when they think they could have done something to help, you're too young to stop what your parents were doing. Just know that Cory and I love and care about you."
"I know that. Can we go in and get this over with. I really don't want to be here too long."
"Sure buddy, do you want Cory to help also?"
"Uh-huh."
Captain Harris had just pulled up when the three boys entered the house. Shaking his head he followed closely. "Mr. Caine?" Harris called out.
"Yes sir, we are down in the back." Michael called out.
"Do you know how long you are going to be?"
"No I don't. Derrick has to decide what he does and doesn't want, so it could be a while."
"Then would you mind if I had officer Jepson stay with you?"
"That is up to you, just don't let him get in Derrick's way."
Three hours later, with the trunk and back seats full the three boys left the house. Derrick tossing his key onto the floor before finally closing and locking the front door. Derrick didn't say a word on the short drive back to Michael's. He leaned against the door and tried hard not to cry. Cory who was sitting beside him frowned and tried to comfort his best friend, but all Derrick did was push him away.
Not knowing what was going on Cory felt hurt. Going into the house, he ran to his room and curled up on his bed as Michael and Derrick brought in Derrick's things. After they had done that and out things away Michael left Derrick to himself and went to check on Cory. Knocking on his door, Michael got no answer, so opening it he saw Cory curled up like he was sleeping. "Cory may I come in?" He asked.
"Uh-huh." Cory whispered.
"Want to tell me what is bothering you?"
"Nothing really, it's just..."
"It is just that you don't know how to help your friend and it is hurting you?"
"Yeah. What can I do?"
"Right now there isn't much you can do except be there for him, even when he pushes you away. Just tell him you're there for him."
"I will, but right now he doesn't want anyone around, and it hurts."
"You have to understand that he is also I hurting, think of what you felt like when you were in the group home. Didn't you feel like you weren't loved, or even wanted? Right now that is probably how Derrick feels, but we can make him feel better."
"Okay, and thanks daddy, I feel better now."
"Anytime little man, sometime you just need to talk things out. Now why don't we go have dinner, I think Maria made us some tacos. "
"Oh wow, I will get Derrick, then be right down."
"Okay, but if he doesn't want to eat don't force it."
"I won't."
Going to Derrick's room Cory knocked on the door. "Come in" Derrick called out softly.
"Derrick, it is Cory I just wanted you to know it is supper time. Maria made face for us. Also I want you to know you're my bro, my best friend and I will always be here for you."
"I know Cory and I feel the same way, but I also feel so lost and alone, almost like my parents didn't want me." Derrick sobbed.
Going over, Cory gave Derrick a hug, you will always be wanted.
"Yeah right, it's my fault that things happened."
"No way dude you can't believe that."
"Why not?"
"Because it isn't true. Your mother did what she did without you knowing. She hurt you a lot, and that isn't nice."
"But.."
"But nothing, now come on let's eat before daddy eats it all." Cory said with a grin. "I bet we can get some ice cream after, how does that sound."
"Sounds like you plan on scamming your dad." Derrick laughed as he headed towards the bedroom door.
"Downstairs Michael had set the table and was just bringing out the food when the two boys walked in.
During dinner Derrick seemed to cheer up a bit, but Michael could see the pain just hiding underneath. Though Derrick smiled and laughed, neither would reach his eyes. The sparkle was gone. After dinner and dishes Michael sent the two boys to play. He gave them the choice of either swimming or videos games. Cory who loved the water wanted to hit the pool, but gave that up when Derrick said videos. Seeing what Cory had done made Michael smile. Soon the two boys were loudly playing and laughing.
That night as Michael sent the two too shower and get ready for bed, Derrick stopped and hugged him. "Thanks Uncle Michael. You're the best." Derrick said with a smile.
"You are more than welcome squirt, now off you go before Cory uses up all the hot water." Michael answered and gently pushed Derrick towards the stairs.
When Michael decided to head for bed it was midnight. Walking into his room he was surprised to see the two boys curled up together. Slipping his pajama bottoms on, he then gently climbed into bed. He had just rested his head on his pillow when Derrick turned and curled up tight to him.
The next morning the two boys woke up and leaving Michael sleeping went down to their rooms and dressed before going to the kitchen and started making breakfast. They were still trying when Maria walked in. "Ah mi Bambinos what is this?"
"We wanted to make daddy breakfast." Cory said with a smile.
"I see, so would you like my help?" Maria asked.
"Uh-huh, we can't reach the stove right." Derrick said sheepishly.
With Maria's help the boys had breakfast ready when Michael shuffled into the dining room. "Senor Caine, the two little ones have made your breakfast, and they did a wonderful job. I am pleased with your two boys." Maria spoke with pride.
"Really, boys this is awesome, it tastes great. I too am proud of you both."
"Thanks daddy." Cory blushed, then whispered to Derrick. "See I told you he wouldn't be upset and that he would like it."
"Thanks Uncle Michael." Derrick whispered as he got up and sat on Michael's lap. "Uncle Michael, umm. I kind a thought about things last night, and well, I kinda want to stay here."
"What about family, like your aunts?"
"They can come visit, I just feel accepted here, like you love me and want me."
"Well I do love you and want you here with us. You are like Cory here, the perfect brother/son. If your aunts agree to letting you stay then they are more than welcome to visit anytime."
"I knew you were the best, next to Cory that is." Derrick said laughing.
"Well I can't think of a better person to take second place to. Now you two go clean up. Then we can plan our day."
"Can we go out on the boat daddy? Cory asked.
"Oh yeah can we, pleeeeaassee?" Derrick begged.
"Well I think we can do that, but you promise me to wear your life jackets?"
"Uh-huh" the two chorused.
There wasn't much to do after the boys suggested a day out sailing. Michael told Maria of their idea, and she packed a lunch for them. "Mr. Caine, you make my job too easy." She said with a laugh.
"Just wait Maria, school starts soon and then you will have your hands full. I know two little ones that hate making beds or hanging up wet towels, but that is how kids are."
"True, but those two are angels."
"Yeah daddy we is angels." Cory interrupted with a giggle.
Once the boys had their life jackets on, Michael started their boat and soon they were motoring down the causeway, passing some large and small sailing boats as they made their way south. Finding a secluded spot, Michael shut the boast down and let the boys swim for a while. As the two swam Michael set up a small barbecue and started some hotdogs. As they were slowly cooking he set up the rest of their lunch. Michael noticed that instead of sodas, she had packed juice boxes and some small cartons on milk. Smiling Michael couldn't help but think she was a great lady. After eating the hotdogs and cleaning up, both Cory and Derrick curled up on the bow and slept for a bit. With the boys napping, Michael sat at the back watching the water, while at same time watching the boys. He was also thinking of the Heilman trial that was about to start the following week. This would hopefully put an end to Michael's nightmares and finally give him closure on a case that has lasted too long.
The feeling of a wet bathing suit sitting on his lap brought Michael out of his reverie. "Uncle Michael can we go back swimming now?" Derrick asked a smile on his face.
"I think now you can, but only for a short time, we have to head back home soon, and we don't want to be out here after dark." Michael answered, as Derrick jumped up and over the side of the boat.
With a laugh both Cory and Michael followed him, all three playing tag and just forgetting the things that happened over the past two weeks. After swimming and playing in the water for another hour, Michael finally got the boys back on the boat. When he had changed back into his jeans and T-shirt Michael started the boat and headed back home. It was days like this that Michael enjoyed the most. He lived spending the time with his brother/son. Michael also knew that these times were going to be few when school started in a few days.
The next two weeks went flashing by as the three boys settled down after their vacation. Sam had called and told Michael that Derrick's aunt was going to come and visit with them, just to see how Derrick was doing. Sam also told him that the aunt couldn't take Derrick. The reasoning behind it was the fact that she had some old charges, and Child Protection wouldn't allow her to be around children for a while. Knowing that, Michael then called his lawyer, and had Mr. Talbert set it up that Michael had permanent custody of Derrick until the age of eighteen.
Now that Cory and Derrick were in school and Michael was on his way to college, things seemed to slow down. Maria was at Michael's place for when the two boys got home, and she always had some sort of snack ready for them.
In mid-December Michael's lawyer called and left a message for him to phone him as soon as he got back from class. When the try-outs came for basketball, both Scott and Michael went for it and within a week they knew they both had made the junior team. Now both boys had a full schedule, what with classes and practice, then homework, they found little time to be alone. Cory and Derrick helped a lot and so did Mrs. A.
January came and so did a letter from Heilman's lawyer asking for some time to speak with him. After reading the letter, Michael called Mr. Talbert his lawyer and asked him what he should do. "You have two choices Michael, one is to ignore the letter, this is the route I would go, the other is to talk to this Mr. Blaskins and see what he wants." Talbert said.
"Well the choice is simple then, I just won't talk to this guy, I know he thinks I probably will help his client, but I know the kid is guilty and there isn't a hope that I want him free. Tommy wouldn't either." Michael stated calmly.
"You're right, listen though Michael, if this Mr. Blaskins keeps hounding you to talk, just refer him to me and I will deal with him."
"Thank you sir. Now what is happening on that building I bought? Have the renovations begun?"
"Yes they started them at the first of the month and should be done by the middle of March. Have you thought of a name for the place?"
"Yes, I want it called the TCC center that is for Tommy and Cory. I really couldn't think of a better fitting name. Can you?"
"No and I will pass that on to the contractor Mr. Bullinger, he did say that he hoped to have things finished quicker. That man likes you Michael. I think it might be the fact that he has made a few millions off you."
"Yeah well to me the money is well spent. Now I have to go before the boys get home. I will talk to you soon."
"Okay Michael, just relax and don't let this lawyer push you."
"I won't. Cyas."
Basketball season really kicked off with a bang when the college team won their first eight games. The fact that Michael and Scott were the team's top scorers. This didn't go unnoticed by some of the team. Sure they were glad to be winning, but to these few, they had the thought that Michael was hogging the ball that all Michael was wanting was the glory that he had when he was in high school. One of these people was the team captain, and as Michael and Scott gained more and more glory with their scoring, his resentment grew.
The coach couldn't have been happier, his team was on a winning streak like none he had ever seen in the college history. He heaped praise on the team after every game and at practice he pushed them harder. The coach had seen how well Michael and Scott worked as a team and tried to get the rest of the team working the same way, what nobody knew was that Michael never played for himself. He didn't know what Scott was thinking when he was on the court, but it was like they were connected.
Half way through the school year, Blaskins started pushing to speak with Michael, but was told to talk to Mr. Talbert. It was during February that Michael started to notice that both Cory and Derricks clothing were either dirty or torn. He tried to talk to both of the boys, but they just said that it was nothing, that they were just always rough housing on the way home. Michael let it go, but in his mind something was nagging him. Putting it aside Michael concentrated on his school work and basketball, that was until Cory came home with a black eye. "Cory, we have to talk."
"Okay daddy."
"Do you want to tell me what is going on, I know you and Derrick rough house, but there is something going on and you both are trying to hide it. I am not mad so don't worry about that, but you coming home with a black eye and torn clothes tells me that you are in some sort of trouble."
"Daddy I can't tell you, if I do then things will only get worse for us." Cory cried.
"Son, if you are being picked on, bullied and beaten up I think that I have to do something, you and Derrick are my brothers and son. It is my responsibility to watch out for you."
"But if I tell, then that makes me a bad person."
"No, it makes you a smart person, no one should be hurt the way you and Derrick are. Now do you want to tell me?"
"GO ahead Cory, I think we should." Derrick said from the doorway.
"But then they will hurt us more."
Walking over Derrick gave Cory a hug. "They might, but I think that Uncle Michael will do something to stop it, if not Uncle Michael then Uncle Scott will if he finds out."
"Derrick is right son, I have to stop this. Now I can go to the principle with what I have seen, or you tell me and I go right to the parents. I am going to let you decide. I think you're big enough to make that choice." Michael whispered as he hugged both boys.
"Umm.. Daddy can Derrick and I talk this over?"
"Sure you can, and I think that is a great idea. Tell you what you two talk and at dinner you can tell me what you both have decided. Does that sound fair to you?"
"Yes. I love you daddy." Cory said as his gave Michael's cheek a kiss. "Daddy can we have some juice and cookies please?" Cory asked.
"Sure I think Maria left some chocolate chip cookies in the jar. Just have a few, I don't want you ruining your dinner.
"Okay and thank you daddy."
"Yes thanks Uncle Michael.
With the boys in the kitchen, Michael sat on the couch and thought of how he could protect his two boys while he was at school or when they were walking home. At dinner the boys were smiling as they ate their hamburgers and fries. "Daddy, we decided that you should talk to the principle, if that don't work, then talk to the parents." Cory said as he stuffed some fries into his mouth.
"Okay then I will call him in the morning and set up a time to meet after lunch, just be ready if he calls you both to his office."
"Oh, okay."
"Now finish up and then get your homework done, I want you both showered and in bed by nine tonight."
"Yes daddy and I don't got homework." Cory said.
"That is I don't have, not don't got." Michael corrected his son with a smile.
"Sure, I don't got any." Cory said sticking out his tongue and giggling.
"Brat." Michael laughed, just as his phone chirped. "Caine here what's your question?"
"Mr. Caine, this is Corporal Morgan. I was wondering how things are going with your family?"
"Well Alex, things are great, school is going well for us all. How are you and the rest of the guys, are you interested in coming out for our semi- finals or are you too busy playing soldier boys?" Michael said with a laugh.
"Well that is the thing, Mr. Johnson said he thought there might be a problem out there, especially with the Heilman trial coming up, so yes we are coming back out there. I would love to see you play."
"Then I guess we will be seeing you soon?"
"Sooner than you might think." Morgan said as he rang Michael's front doorbell.
Seeing Alex and Lightfingers again was good, and as Derrick and Cory sat and watched TV. Michael and the two men sat in the kitchen having coffee and juice. "So when do you move into your new offices?" Alex asked.
"End of the month. Why are you two looking for a job?" Michael said with a grin.
"Actually, yes I am, I have another six months left on my contract with the army, and then I am free. I was thinking of maybe going into security, with the side jobs that Mr. Johnson sends our way I figure I could make a good living." Carl stated.
"Well, I have been wondering what I should do, more so now that I am almost finished school, and I have to two boys. Do you think Mr. Algraves and Sgt. Angelo would like to take on the job with you two?"
"I can ask, but I think I already know the answer."
"Good you talk to them tomorrow, meanwhile Alex, I need your help. I have to find out who is hurting the kids. I talk to them and they both have agreed to let me talk to the principal of their school, but my gut is telling me that it won't end there."
"So you want me to babysit your two boys?" Alex asked.
"Well, not really babysit, but maybe you can watch and see who it is, and maybe try and stop it?"
"I can do that, but give the school and chance first."
"Michael?" Carl spoke up. "When is your next game?"
"This Friday night, I have seats saved for Cory and Derrick, so it won't be hard to have you sit with them."
As Michael was sitting talking with Alex and Carl, Scott was busy talking with the Captain of the basketball team. Trying to get him to ease off of his dislike for Michael and him, but it wasn't working.
The next morning after Derrick and Cory had left for school and with Maria in the kitchen Michael called the boy's school and set up a meeting with the principal. Michael was just about to leave for his classes when he was stopped by the doorbell. "Damn this place is getting to be busy." Michael thought as he opened the door to see Sam and his lawyer standing there. "What's this, your offices getting too crowded?" Michael joked.
"No, I needed to get away for a bit, but I also came to inform you that Mr. Bullinger is almost finished." Mr. Talbert stated.
"And I am here Michael to let you know that the San Antonio police have some questions for you, now I spoke with the chief, and told him I was coming out here on some other matters, so I figured maybe I could get the questions answered without you having to fly back." Sam answered softly.
"What questions?"
"Well, may we come in?"
"Sure, I can have Maria bring you some coffee and we can talk in the Den." Michael replied.
With coffees and juice the three sat, Sam and Mr. Talbert taking the couch as Michael sat at his desk. "Okay Sam, what is this all about?" Michael asked.
"Well first let's get the questions done, that way we can relax a bit."
"Sounds good to me."
"Great, now the police want to know three things, first is what time did you and your brother's get back to the hotel?"
"Let's see, I can't be precise, but I think it was about 4 pm. I had the boys take a shower and then Alex and Carl showed up."
"Did you leave the room at any time, while they were showering?"
"No, I try not to leave them on their own, I mean if they were older that would be different."
"I understand that. Was your friend Scott with you?"
"Yes, he was. In fact he was making dinner reservations for us."
"When you ran back into the elevator, what was the reason for that?"
"I forgot my wallet and camera, I needed them both."
"Now when you were in there, did you hear anything?"
"Yes I heard something hit the roof, and that was right after the thing stopped between floors. Now what is this about?"
"Michael when the police and fire department got to the top of the elevator they found the body of a woman, she has been identified as Nadine Brookmeir."
"Are they saying I killed her?"
"They have to investigate every angle. The police know that she was a thorn in your side."
"Well I didn't do it, hell I didn't even know she was in the hotel."
"I know that Michael, so relax we have to ask these things just to be clear we are not going to arrest the wrong person."
"I know Sam. I am sorry she is dead and I feel sorry for her family. I know what they are going through."
"I know that Michael and I will give them your condolences.
"Thanks Sam. Now what is the other thing that brought you out here?"
"Well Michael." Mr. Talbert started. "It is about Derrick."
"What about him?"
"Well, how would you like to keep him until he is eighteen?"
"Get real, there is nothing I would like more than anything, besides it would be good for him and for Cory also, those two are almost attached at the hip."
"Great, Sam are you willing to help sponsor Michael as Derrick's foster parent?" Talbert asked.
"Sure, I think that Derrick needs stability in his life right now, I know that sooner or later, Derrick is going to have a few problems dealing with what has happened, and I think Michael here is the perfect person to help him."
"Then I shall have Judge Montoya finish the paper work, I just had to make sure with you Michael that Derrick could stay here."
"Derrick and I talked about it the other day and I told him until Sam here could find a relative to take him, that he would be staying here. Now this makes it permanent."
"Good, now I will let you tell Derrick the good news when he gets home from school. I should have the paper work done by then."
"Thanks, Sam can you stay for my game tomorrow night?" Michael asked.
"I hope I can, I haven't seen you play since you left high school."
"Heck that wasn't that long ago."
"True, but I have been so busy dealing with you and other cases that time seems to fly."
"Nah just old age catching you, by the way did you talk to the people who were looking into the plane crash that killed my family?"
"I have left a message for him to call me back, I haven't heard anything, but he could be looking into the crash I was on."
"Okay, but I still want answers."
"I know that you do, and you are entitled to them. I will give the gentleman another call this afternoon and see if he has any answers for you."
"Thanks, now I have to get to classes, Sam you can stay here if you don't have a room booked yet."
"That would be great, I could use a bit of a nap, I have been going since 3 this morning."
"Okay I will tell Maria, that you will be staying. I will also let her know that there will be seven for dinner tonight."
"Seven, Michael, even I know how to count, and all I come up with is three." Talbert said with a laugh.
"Well I think Scott will be here, actually I know he will be then there will be Carl and Alex. So to me that makes seven."
"Smart ass. Now I have to be off." Talbert stated as he rose from his seat.
Looking at is watch Michael saw that his morning classes were done. So leaving the house Michael drove over to Cory's school and sat out in the parking lot. He had been there about five minutes when he heard the bell ring for lunch. Walking over to the front door, Michael waited for Cory and Derrick to come out. Seeing them both walking together, their heads bent towards each other as they talked, brought a small smile to Michael's lip. "Hey you two?" Michael called out. "How would you both like to go to McDonalds for lunch?"
"Daddy, you scared the heck outta me." Cory said with a laugh as he jumped into Michael's arms.
"Well maybe you should pay more attention. Come here Derrick let me give you a hug also." Michael whispered.
"Hey Uncle Michael." Derrick whispered. "Glad you is here."
"Oh, is something wrong?
Looking up at Cory, Derrick frowned a bit, but seeing Cory nod his head Derrick turned back to Michael. "Uh-huh, but can we get outta here and talk?" Derrick asked.
"Sure, but if this is something that is going on in the school I want to deal with it right now."
"Can't it wait until you bought us lunch?" Cory asked giggling.
"Sounds like someone is hungry, how about you Derrick?"
"Yeah, let's eat first then talk."
As the boys stuffed their faces with chicken nuggets and a happy meal, Michael sat and watched. He could see something was troubling Derrick and Cory both, but he waited for them to talk. After eating Cory, pushed his tray away and looked at his Dad. "Daddy, I am glad you showed up when you did. You got to do something, talk to someone, both of us, well these guys threatened to beat us up if we didn't give them the money we had, but they also said some nasty stuff also."
"I have a meeting with your principal this afternoon, so that should help."
"Nah uh, these guys are big, I think they go to the big school down by the mall."
"You mean the high school?"
"Uh huh."
"Guys that makes it different. If they are taking your money and threatening you, that becomes a problem for the police. Uncle Sam is at our house, I can call him and see if he can get someone to talk to the three of us."
"Okay." Derrick mumbled.
Michael could see that Derrick was scared. "Guys, when we get back to the school I want you both to stay with me while I go to the office, I am taking you out of classes for the afternoon. I don't feel good with you two there right now."
"But, the principal won't let us leave." Derrick said.
"Yes she will, and even if she doesn't I will take you home. Are you back packs in you classroom?"
"Uh-huh, but we can get them, while you talk to the Principal." Cory stated.
"No, we will get them before we go to the office. You can tell your teacher that you have been called out."
"Okay.
Walking the hallways of the school, brought a sharp pain to Michael, as he remembered walking these same hallways with his brother Adam a few years before. Sometimes Michael could still hear Adam's silly little laugh as he played some game or prank on him. When the three stopped outside Cory and Derrick's classroom, Michael though he was going to faint. Leaning against the wall, Michael waited for the two boys to grab their things and come back out. Michael had his eyes closed, when he felt a small hand tug on his arm. "Uncle Michael, the teacher wants to talk to you." Derrick said.
"Okay munchkin."
Taking Derricks hand the two stepped into the room and Michael froze. The teacher was the same one that taught Adam. Sitting on one of the desks Michael, leaned forward a bit and waited for his heart to slow down. "Michael Caine, are you alright?" The teacher asked.
"Yes ma'am. I umm I just wasn't prepared for this that is all."
"Daddy, Mrs. Westdad is an awesome teacher."
"I know son. She is the one that taught Adam." Michael whispered.
"Michael, these are your two boys?" Mrs. Westdad asked.
"Yes ma'am, Cory is my adopted brother/son, and Derrick well right now he is staying with us, until some family members can be found."
"Michael I am sorry about your family, I know it has been a while, but you never come around anymore. Adam was a smart young man, just like you, and these two, well they are just as smart, but lately I have noticed that their marks are slipping, I was hoping that they could talk to me, but I can see that they did talk to someone."
"Yes ma'am, they did talk to me that is why today I am talking from class. Though I am hoping it will just be for the day."
"Oh before I forget I have Adam's last assignment. I don't know why I kept it. I am sure you will be surprised when you read it. I was actually thinking of getting it framed and then hang it here in the classroom as a reminder to other students."
"Ma'am, I would like to read it, but afterwards you can have it back. Adam always told me you were the best and I know he was right, though I don't remember the times I had in your class, I think I was what they call and enfant terrible." Michael laughed.
"You weren't that bad." Mrs. Westdad grinned.
"How bad was my daddy?" Cory asked.
"He wasn't in fact he was a very quiet young lad."
"Thanks, but I remember a few things. Now we have to go. You take care ma'am, and it was good to see you again."
"Yes Michael, it was good to see you, now get out of here I have class starting soon."
The principal was in her early forties, and a very stern looking woman, her hair was pulled back tightly in a bun and to Michael it looked painful. "Mr. Caine, you sounded like this was a serious situation when you called this morning, would you care to explain." The principal asked in an anxious voice.
"Yes ma'am. It seems like the school here is allowing its students to get bullied, and beaten on. When my son and foster son come home from here with black eyes or bloodied lips it leaves me wondering."
"Now Mr. Caine those are serious accusations, and I can assure you that this school does not condone such actions."
"Oh really, then I guess my boys use movie make-up to make it look like things are happening. I can tell you this right now ma'am that if my boys come home from here once more showing that they have been in a fight I will come back here and you will find that I am not a very nice person."
"I see very well sir, now I have things to do, so if you will excuse me, I would like to get them done."
"Yes ma'am and thank you for the time you have taken with me. Please be aware that I shall be making note of this meeting with the School board, and with the authorities."
"Now Mr. Caine there is no need to go that far."
"I am afraid so ma'am, you seem so indifferent to what is going on here. Please have a great day. Come on boys it is time to go home."
"Mr. Caine your boys have class this afternoon, and they have not been excused from them."
"Yes ma'am they have, I spoke with their teacher already. And your actions here are enough for me to take them home."
Walking out of the school the Cory and Derrick raced each other to Michael's car. Both getting there at the same time. Laughing the two hopped into the back and buckled in. "Daddy where are we going?" Cory asked.
"Home I want you both to do your school work while I make a few calls and read this paper of Adam's."
"Okay, but can we have a snack as we work?"
"You may ask Maria when you get home."
"Thanks daddy, you the best.
