Chapter 9
Keegan leaned over the ball. The game against State was a battle. She glanced up at the scoreless board and the clock. Time was running out quickly. The defense had been all over her for the first and second half of the game. She was exhausted. AJ waited for her to start the free kick. She had just been taken down from behind for the sixth time this afternoon. AJ hadn't told her the defender was coming. AJ's minimum communication was a way of getting back at her for taking her spot in the starting line up and for her relationship with Gwen. Since school started time had flown by. With school, soccer, and Gwen, her schedule was full.
Her first season at Weston had been exceptional. They currently had the record of 6-1-1. Keegan lead the team with points. She had score five times but assisted on six goals. Gwen had scored four times. Rabbit and AJ had three goals each. Weston had already passed the scoring total from the prior season.
The State team had been pushing and pulling out every dirty trick in the book. Keegan had been used to getting attention from the defense, but State was pulling on her jersey and kicking at her legs. The slide tackles had been numerous and dangerous. Keegan wiped her brow on her jersey. She sent the ball up field to AJ on the right side. Rabbit was on the right wing and circled back behind the defender. Keegan positioned herself for the release pass. Gwen hung back on the left side trying to stay on side. AJ passed up to Rabbit who tried to run the sideline. Spinning back towards the field, Rabbit passed the ball back to the center of the field. It was a bad pass and landed half way between Keegan and AJ.
Keegan took off to recover the pass. AJ was out of position, but saw the State defender racing to the ball.
"Watch!" AJ yelled to her but it was too late. Keegan kicked the ball forward to Gwen just as the State defender slid into her planted foot. Keegan was up ended and fell flat on her back. Smacking the back of her head on the ground. Keegan felt immediate pain rocket through her leg and head. She looked up at the afternoon sky. She tried to get up but she couldn't. She bent her other leg to try to rise to a sitting position. She couldn't. Not sure of what was happening on the field, Keegan lay there trying to assess the pain that was riveting her body. The whistle finally blew. Keegan opened her eyes to see Rabbit standing over her.
"Kee, where does it hurt?"
"My leg. My head." Keegan began to move her good leg back and forth. Curtis was kneeing next to her. Next to him was Josh, the trainer. Josh touched her calf muscle. Keegan screamed. She managed to get into a sitting position. She held on to her head with her hands. Gwen was squatted at her other side.
"It's your good leg." Gwen said with some relief. Keegan nodded. Keegan gritted her teeth as she tried to stand up. She swayed and sat back down.
"Fuck, did the ref even see that?" Keegan said as she looked at her bruising leg.
"Get Dailey in." Curtis said. He tipped his hat back and looked at Keegan. "You need X-rays." Keegan leaned up on her bent knee.
"Let me walk it off." Keegan begged. "I'll know if it's still bad after I walk it off. Give me some time before you ship me off to some hospital at State. I'll go to the hospital but at Weston. I do not want these State doctor's to look at me." Curtis nodded in agreement. She took Gwen and Curtis's hand and got to her feet. Gwen walked with her for a bit. The State crowd began to clap as she made her way off the field. Gwen dropped her support and turn to play.
"Gwen," Keegan called her back. The blonde looked at her. "Score" Keegan told her. A wide smile came across her face. Janet ran past her as the substitution was made. Keegan gave Janet thumbs up sign. Janet had only gotten in a couple of games. Keegan was happy to see her getting some playing time. Janet nodded and filled Keegan's position on the field. Keegan took a seat on the bench so the training staff could work on her leg. Jason took off her shoe and shin guard blood began to drip from the gash on the back of her calve. The defender had caught the back of her leg and torn the skin away. The trainer thought that she should get a stitch to be certain. Jason gave her a bag of ice for her leg. Her skin was tender as the cold came into contact with it.
"Shit." Keegan said as the coldness burned her skin. Josh wrapped her lower leg to stop the bleeding. She leaned back on the bench in a reclining position.
On the field, Gwen positioned herself near the top of State's goal box. She punched the ball back to AJ. The defenders swarmed AJ. Janet slid into Gwen's slot on the left side. AJ passed the ball to Janet. Janet was in the clear. The defenders were busy watching AJ and Gwen. Janet was able to slide into an open area. She made on run towards the box. Rabbit weaved into a spot in front of her defender. Janet passed the ball across the goal face. Gwen jumped for the ball, redirecting it with her head into the side of the netting. Gwen immediately turned and looked for Keegan. Instead she found Janet screaming and running at her like a madman. Janet tackled her. AJ and Rabbit stood above the freshman laughing. For the first time in their careers they were actually winning against State.
"Nice pass" Rabbit said as she help Janet to her feet.
"That was beautiful. I didn't even see Gwen." Janet said as she walked to the centerline with her teammates.
Keegan stood on her good leg screaming. She had her hands raised above her head until dizziness washed over her. She watched as Gwen and Janet celebrated. Keegan thought about the times that Janet was on the bench and Keegan was on the field celebrating. Janet deserved her moment. Gwen walked with her a grin was firm on her face. Keegan knew she was pleased that she had scored the goal. Glancing up at the game time, Keegan knew the next few moments would be critical.
State started the ball off and immediately pushed the ball to the goal. Rose blocked a shot and the deflection that got away from Carol. The game clock hit zero, but stoppage time was added on for injuries. State players got a second wind and began to crash the goal. Rose made a great save and kicked the ball up to Janet who was up field.
Janet got the ball and headed full steam towards the State goal. She was at the top of the box, when she shot the ball. The State goalkeeper caught the shot but bobbled it. Janet let out wail as she knocked the ball away from the keeper and put it in the net.
Every player on the Weston team tackled Janet. She was at the bottom of the pile. The ref blew the whistle ending the game. Keegan hobbled out on the field to praise Janet. Janet was so happy she was crying. Tears spilled down her cheeks. Keegan gave Janet a giant hug as she walked off the field. Gwen followed behind with an arm draped across Janet's shoulders.
"Awesome. That was great. You should be so proud." Keegan said as she kissed her cheek.
"Finally, I finally feel like part of this team." Janet said. She put an arm around Keegan and helped her off the field. "This feels great."
The three amigo's they had been dubbed by the upper classman. The three some walked off the field. Keegan and Gwen flanked Janet. They headed to the lockers. From the stands Gwen could hear someone yelling Keegan's name.
"Keegan" The young woman screamed out again. Gwen saw the woman was a gorgeous. Her dark hair spilled over her bronze colored shoulders. She had high cheekbones and was extremely slim. She looked vaguely familiar to Gwen. "Keegan Garry." The woman's voice strained. Gwen tapped Keegan and got her attention. She pointed to the woman in the stands. Keegan smiled at Gwen than looked to where she pointed. She lost her footing as she realized whom Gwen was pointing at.
"Sandy." It was barely a whisper that escaped Keegan's lips. Instantly Gwen knew who the woman was.
"Please Keegan." She yelled out. Keegan's smile was gone. She looked straightforward and headed to the lockers. Gwen reached to touch Keegan's arm. Keegan pulled away as if she had been burned. Gwen gazed back at the beautiful woman. Janet was oblivious to what had transpired on the way to lockers.
Keegan was in shock. She did not to see Sandy Creed at the game. Let alone Sandy Creed calling her name out. Gwen had to know who she was. Maybe not at first, but once Keegan shut down Gwen would know. Janet sat next to her all excited about her performance. Gwen sat across from her.
Raising her head, Keegan saw Gwen staring at her intensely. Her heart skipped a beat. She realized she loved Gwen. Maybe it was the pain that she felt in her head and leg or seeing Sandy Creed that made her realized how she felt. She also realized that Gwen loved her. The day in the room after being stuck in the shower for twenty minutes, Gwen had whispered she loved her as she kissed her shoulder. Gwen had loved her from the beginning. Keegan had been so afraid to say anything, afraid of being hurt. She was hurting Gwen by not telling her. Keegan expression changed. She smiled at the woman she loved. Gwen blushed and looked away. Keegan would tell her tonight how she felt about her.
Janet danced around like a lunatic. The team was festive for the first time they had beaten State at State. Janet and Rabbit were jumping up and down on the benches. Rose was sitting in the corner quietly taking everything in. Curtis had a huge grin on his face. His moustache was actually curling into his dimples.
"Great job everyone." He said as the team settled down. "Ms. Dailey nice game. AJ and Shannon thank you for your leadership. Rose another great game. Another shut out." Curtis turned to Gwen. "Gwen nice goal. Way to go for the ball. I don't think Janet even saw you come up field that quick." He stood behind Keegan. "You took a beating tonight. I think AJ got three minutes of the eighty seven-minute abuse State gave you this afternoon. Way to stick with it. I know its frustrating and hard to leave a game, but I think everything worked out in our favor today." He rubbed his hand through Keegan's hair. "Everyone, I am proud of the way you hung in there for the entire ninety minutes. You should be proud. " Curtis gave Janet a hug as he left the locker room.
The team showered and began to board the van's to return to the hotel. Keegan slid in and Gwen sat next to her. Keegan had her leg propped up on the armrest as she leaned against Gwen.
"Are you feeling okay?" Gwen asked her. Keegan nodded her leg and head hurt but she was okay.
"Yeah, I am okay. It hurts." She saw Curtis turn his attention to her regarding her health. "Do you know who that was yelling for me?" Keegan whispered. With a slight hesitation Gwen nodded.
"Should I be worried?" Gwen asked as she pushed her hair behind her ears and looked out the window.
"Such the opposite, you don't even realize." Keegan leaned her head back on Gwen's shoulder.
"You will have to elaborate once we get to the hotel." Gwen said. The nervousness was still in her voice.
"Keegan, maybe we should be safe and take you to the hospital." Curtis yelled to the back of the van. The chatter stopped as everyone waited for Keegan's answer. She was thankful that she did not re-injure the other leg.
"It's mainly my leg. I have a headache." Keegan said as the van blurred in front of her. She reached out and squeezed Gwen's knee. Her vision re-focused after a second. Curtis was staring back at her.
"I know you do not care for State, but maybe we should get you checked out." Curtis argued with the feisty one.
"No, we have celebrating to do this evening." Keegan said the van echoed with screams.
Curtis had a rule that freshman did not room together at away games. Keegan had been paired up with Carol. Gwen was paired with Nicole. Janet was with Rabbit for the road trip to State. The odds were that the party would be in Rabbit and Janet's room that night. Keegan and Gwen debated how Janet got the lucky pick.
The vans pulled up outside the hotel. Someone from the back slid the side door open. Gwen got out with her and Keegan's duffel bags swung over her shoulders. Keegan stepped out of the van with her good leg supporting her. She leaned on Curtis as she shifted her weight. IT took a minute to gain her balance. She had taken hits before but this was one she could not shake off.
"No, so do not ask. I will ice and see how it feels as soon as we get back to Weston." Keegan patted his shoulder. "I know I am stubborn."
"Without a doubt." Curtis said. "Gwen are you helping her with her stuff." Gwen nodded. Keegan hobbled along as Gwen walked with her. They got to the elevator. Gwen thought taking the elevator would be easier on Keegan. The bell rang and the door opened and they got on. Gwen leaned against the rail. Keegan could tell from her body language that something was bothering her. They started heading up to the forth floor.
"Remember the first time me were in an elevator together?" Keegan said. A slight smile came to Gwen face.
"It was an interesting ride." Gwen commented. "That was Sandy at the field." Keegan nodded. "What are you going to do about it?"
"Do about it? Nothing." The door opened and Gwen walked ahead to Keegan's room. Keegan caught the door just before it shut. Gwen had thrown Keegan's bag on the floor and took at stance next to the window. "Talk to me." Keegan said as she sat on the bed. Gwen moved and sat in the chair close to the window. "I was going to tell you who that was. I was waiting until we were alone." Keegan said as she propped her leg up on the bed. "There is really nothing to it. She goes to school her I guess. Why are you mad at me?' Keegan could hear the frustration in her voice.
"She is gorgeous. You never told me that." Gwen shot at her. "My God Keegan, she is beautiful. How am I supposed to feel?" Gwen put her hand on her forehead. Her insecurity was showing.
"You are supposed to feel the same as you did before you saw Sandy. I don't even think about Sandy any more. I don't love her. " Keegan slid across the bed to get closer to Gwen. Keegan clutched Gwen's hand. "I don't love her. " She repeated. Gwen looked at her with tears in her eyes. "I love you. You are my world. You are the one I dream about. You are the one I want to spend all my time with. I am not sure what you are thinking in that head of yours but I love you." Keegan leaned in and kissed Gwen softly on the lips. "You." She touched Gwen's nose with her finger.
"Keegan, " Gwen paused a moment. "I love you. I have since the first week. I just. I have some trouble not knowing how you feel."
"You have no reason to feel that way. Right now I thinking I am an asshole for not telling you sooner." Keegan sat back on the bed. "Come sit next to me." Keegan asked. She was hurting. Gwen curled up along side her. "So how do we move pass this thing with Sandy?"
"I just wasn't expecting her to look like that. I had seen the picture but it really didn't do her justice."
"She is not a good person. She hurt me. I have told you this. Just because some good looking chick yells my name does not mean that I am going running to her. I would never do that." Keegan played with Gwen's hair.
"I know. I was just being insecure."
"You're beautiful. You may not think that way but I do. I look at you sometimes and wonder why you put up with me." Keegan kissed her forehead. Gwen leaned in and kissed Gwen on the lips. They separated as door of the room opened and shut. Carol came in the room. They tried not to flaunt their relationship in front of the team. Keegan had come to terms that AJ would be in their lives at this time and place. There was nothing really she could do about it. Carol set her bag on the floor. She lay flat across her bed and stared at the freshman.
"We beat State!" She smiled. "You had a great goal Gwen. I didn't think you could jump that high. What the fuck got into Dailey? She is running around like a mad man." Carol smiled at the sight of Janet running up and down the hallway screaming. "Kee, are you gonna live?"
"Yeah, but I am a little worried about my position." Gwen and Carol looked at her. "Janet impressed me, too."
"You're just as crazy as she is. Are you sure you didn't hit your head to hard?" Carol said as she rolled on her side. "Gwen, set her straight."
"Absolutely, not!" Gwen said and everyone in the room began to laugh. Gwen leaned over and kissed Keegan fully on the mouth. Keegan felt Gwen's body on top of her. Carol or not she could not control her urges. She kissed Gwen back pulling her closer and across her body. They were kissing for a period of time. Suddenly, Keegan pulled back knowing that her hotel mate may not appreciate the show that they were putting on.
"I am sorry Carol." Keegan tried to make an excuse.
"Keegan, don't be sorry. You and G have something that most of us wish for. Never be sorry. Now if you room with Nicole this maybe a different story." Carol rolled off the bed. She leaned over and kissed Gwen on the cheek. "I am sorry if I hurt you." Carol referred to the fling she had with AJ. " I understand where you were at that time." Carol headed for the door. " I think I will be out of the room for at least an hour." She emphasized her time frame. Gwen leaned into Keegan. Her eyes were wide and bright.
"So you?" She asked as she straddled Keegan.
"Love you." Keegan filled in the blank.
"And you are?"
"Completely sorry that I did not tell you earlier." Keegan smiled as Gwen hard core stance began to weaken. "And that you are the best thing that has ever happen to me. I love you." Keegan placed her hands on Gwen's hips. She sat up pulling Gwen on top of her thighs. She pressed her face between Gwen's breasts. She pushed her hips upward against Gwen's bottom. Keegan trailed kisses on Gwen's chest. Gwen pulled Keegan's head back as she leaned to kiss her.
"I love you." Keegan said as they kissed. She began to grind against Gwen thighs.
"Tell me if I am hurting you?" Gwen said as she began to kiss Gwen's neck.
"You're doing something to me but I am not complaining." Keegan said as Gwen pushed her down of the bed. Gwen pulled her shirt and sports bra off. She had her hands pressed on the mattress on each side of Keegan's head. Her hair spilled over her shoulders framing her face. Gwen rubbed her nose against Keegan's as she began to grind against Keegan's hips. Keegan ran her hands up Gwen's back. Gwen kissed Keegan fiercely. Gwen lowered the weight of her hips on to Keegan's pelvis as she began to speed up the grinding motion. Keegan felt her shirt being pulled up. Gwen's hand cupped a small breast and began to stroke with her fingers. Gwen's hair flowed across Keegan's face as Gwen lowered her kisses. Her mouth left Keegan's and began to work on her neck and shoulder. Gwen continued to kiss her. She raised Keegan's shirt and bra off. Their breasts rubbed against each other. Keegan's nipples raised as Gwen planted kisses across each one. She sucked each areola as she moved her hand to Keegan's waistband. Keegan ran her hand through Gwen hair she kissed the locks. Gwen trailed kisses lower and lower against Keegan's rib cage, her bellybutton and lower to the pubic hairline. Her hand replaced her lips as she rose to look at Keegan's eyes. Her fingers dipped in to the sweet nectar on Keegan's woman hood. Keegan let out a small gasp as Gwen finger's explored and stoked her genitalia. Keegan reached to pull Gwen closer. Gwen stopped her. As her finger's continued to stoke Keegan's valley, her lips were on Keegan's breast. Nipping, sucking and licking each globe. Her finger slipped deeper into Keegan's vagina. Keegan could feel her body reacting to Gwen's finger. Gwen slipped in a second finger. Keegan cried out. Gwen increased her rhythm. She used her thigh to push deeper into Keegan's cavern. Gwen kissed her on the lips to smother the explosive scream that was mounting. Keegan felt her body pulsating and contracting around Gwen's fingers. Gwen gyrated against Keegan faster and faster.
"Oh God!" Keegan screamed as she finally came. Gwen's fingers worked magic as they continued to fondle and explore. Keegan shot straight up in the bed as Gwen touched her clit. She heard Gwen chuckle as she continued to massage Keegan's clit.
Keegan was able to flip Gwen on to her back as her orgasm rolled through her body. She wrapped her arms around Gwen's waist and buried her face in her breasts. Gwen cupped the back of her head as she kissed the top of it. Keegan quivered with Gwen in her arms. Her body shuddered. Her lock on Gwen was gentle. Her head rested on Gwen's shoulder. She could feel the tears rolling down her face.
"What's wrong?" Gwen asked as she tilted Keegan head up to look at her. She kissed her tears. "Keegan." Gwen began to question what was happening.
"I am just really happy." Keegan sniffed and laughed at the same time. "I love you Gwen." She thought a moment. "The night we met at Déjà vu I knew I was in trouble. I was willing to share you. I knew it would be hard but I did not want to lose you."
"You don't have to share me..ever. You are the only one I want to be with." Gwen kissed her. "I do not like road trips." Gwen stated as she looked at Carol's bed. Keegan realized that Gwen would not be sleeping next to her that night.
"Neither do I." Keegan nuzzled Gwen's neck. "Stay tonight. Screw Carol. Stay here." Keegan rationalized their dilemma in two seconds.
"You and I both know that it is not going to happen. We need to be discrete. Although when we get back to Weston, there will be a long and extensive make up session." Gwen teased. Keegan nipped at her bare breast. The telephone rang. They exchanged looks and laughed. "That always seems to happen." Finally, Keegan reached to answer.
"Keegan," It was Curtis.
"Sir." Keegan said in the phone.
"I need to speak with Lerner. Is she there?"
"Hang on.." Keegan covered the phone and passed it to Gwen. "It's Curtis." Gwen slid across the bed and took the phone.
"Hello." Gwen said. She listened to Curtis for a bit. "Okay, when?" She hung up and looked strangely at Keegan. "Curtis wants to meet with me in the hotel lobby. That's weird."
"Did he say what about?"
"Nope....I have to shower. "
"You should probably dress too." Keegan teased. "Call me when you are done. We can go get food." Gwen found her clothes and put them on.
"I wonder what he wants." Gwen said as she placed a kiss on Keegan's lips. "I'll call you when I am done." Gwen left and Keegan hobbled to the bathroom to take a shower.
Keegan's leg still hurt, she turned on the water for her shower. Her calf showed yellow and greenish bruise forming. There was a definite cleat mark forming on skin. She heard Carol come into the room. Keegan stuck her head out of the bathroom.
"Carol, where are we going to dinner?"
"Rabbit wants to hit a chain. Did you hear that there was a reporter for Sports Day at the game today?"
"No shit. Who told you that?" Keegan said as she wrapped a towel around her body and stepped into the room.
"Rabbit said that Curtis told her." Carol said as she plopped down on her bed. She flipped on the television. "Is Gwen here?"
"She went to her room. She is coming back or calling. What's Janet's mood."
"Still higher than a kite. Everyone is...Rose, Shannon, AJ. It's pretty cool. This season has been the best. I just hope it gets better. How's your leg?" Keegan turned and showed her leg to Carol. "Ewww. "
"I'll agree with that." Keegan went to take her shower. She looked at her image in the mirror. Suddenly the image doubled and blurred. A shooting pain went through her head. Keegan reached for the door to call to Carol. She felt her hand on the knob and called out to Carol as she slipped to the floor.
Keegan could hear noise and voices. She tried to open her eyes. Carol voice was calling her name. She felt someone shaking her arm. She slowly opened in her eyes. Fluttering open and shut, she slowly focused on the forms in the room. Carol was next to her. Shannon and Rose were kneeling on the opposite side.
"Did anyone find Curtis?" Shannon asked the figures in the doorway. "Keegan." Shannon touched her shoulder. "Keegan can you hear me?"
"Yeah." She pause a moment "What happen?" Keegan asked as she looked at her teammates. She was on the floor outside the bathroom.
"You passed out." Shannon said as Curtis appeared in the doorway. He looked at his upperclassman. "I think your bump on the head was a little more than you thought." Shannon backed away as Curtis and Josh made their way to Keegan side.
"How long was she out?" Curtis looked Shannon. Shannon looked at Carol. Curtis looked at Carol.
"About five minutes." Carol looked panicked and flush. "I didn't know what to do?" She blurted out.
"What happen?" Keegan asked again. Josh looked strangely at Curtis.
"Keegan, what day is it?" Curtis asked.
"Saturday."
"Do you know where we are at?" Curtis asked.
"A hotel. State. We beat state!" A big smile came over her face. She sat up and realized that she was only covered with a towel. "I went to take a shower." Keegan pulled the towel tighter around her. "I talked to Carol." Keegan looked at the stressed out junior. "I went back in the bathroom. My vision doubled and blurred. I called to Carol." Keegan looked at Curtis. "That's it. That's all I can remember."
"Did your vision blur prior to this?"
"In the van." Keegan confessed.
"Did you tell anyone about it." Curtis was angry but tried to cover it. Keegan shook her head. "Let's go. State or not. You are going to get checked out." He muttered something about stubbornness. Curtis stood up. "Shannon, Carol help her get dressed." Curtis and Josh exited the room. "We'll be outside."
Rabbit and Carol helped Keegan throw on some clothes. Keegan was a bit unsteady on her feet. Gwen was not in the room and she was not with Curtis.
"Where's Gwen?" Keegan asked as they threw a T-shirt over her head.
"I don't know." Carol said. "Kee, you scared the crap out of me." There was a bit of relief that Carol was no longer by self.
"Sorry, I didn't think that it was that bad. I've had knocks before. I always could shake it off."
"Is this the first time you got really hit since the accident." Rabbit asked. Keegan thought for a moment. She hadn't taken that into consideration. She really hadn't been knocked hard since the car wreck. "I take it from your silence that it is. I know that you have been knocked around, but Kee that was a hard hit. I think you were out on the field for a bit. I should have said something." Shannon's guilt got the best of her. She took Keegan's arm and led her to the hall. Curtis and Josh stopped talking when the door opened.
"I called over to the athletic department. We are going to get a CT done. Are your parents here?"
"No, one of the girls had homecoming this weekend." Shannon and Carol had dressed Keegan in her warm up suit. They walked with her to the elevator. They got on the elevator and went into the lobby. Keegan walked with Curtis holding on to her arm. Josh had gone ahead and got the van. Gwen and AJ were walking in the door of the hotel as Curtis and Keegan exited. Gwen rushed in to Keegan's side.
"What's going on?" She asked. Keegan started to speak. She hesitated when she saw AJ at Gwen's side.
"I passed out in the bathroom. Carol was there. I am going to the hospital." Keegan said as Curtis waited for her.
"I am coming." Gwen stated.
"Gwen, there is no need." Curtis said.
"Curtis, let me go with you." Gwen pleaded.
"I would like her there if that is okay." Keegan asked. She would feel better if Gwen was at the hospital with her.
"Get in." Curtis scolded her. "I told you to keep an eye on her." Curtis said.
"I was until you called for me." Gwen argued back. Curtis nodded and shut the door behind them. "What happen, I was just there an hour ago and you seemed fine." She reached over and touched Keegan's hand.
"I don't know. You left and I went to take a shower. I turned on the water. Carol came in we talked about food. In the bathroom my vision blurred and I went to get Carol because something wasn't right."
"Did you call your folks?" Keegan shook her head. Gwen pulled out her cellphone and called the Garry house. "There is no answer. " Gwen said. "Hi, its Gwen. Can someone give me a call back on my cell? " Gwen left her number. Keegan looked out the window. She had tears in her eyes. What Rabbit said was very true. She had not hit her head since the accident. She had suffered a sever concussion at that time. She never gave it a second thought. She had been trying to rehab her leg. She had worked so hard to get her leg to work she never thought about what else may have been effective. She was happier than she ever had been today. It just seems that every time she was heading down the right path, a roadblock would emerge.
"Hey, where are you?" Gwen asked. Keegan turned to look at her. Tears were flowing freely. "It's going to be okay." Gwen wrapped her arms around Keegan. She didn't care if Curtis was in the van or not. If he couldn't figure out what the relationship was between them than that was his own ignorance. Keegan quietly cried on Gwen shoulder.
Josh pulled in front of the State University Medical building. Curtis, Keegan and Gwen got out of the vans and went into the hospital. There was a man in a State athletics shirt. He called to Curtis.
"Rob, good game today." The man shook Curtis' s hand. "Well ladies, you do not look quite as happy as you were this afternoon. I am Jim Tebbits, the Athletic Director for State. Ms. Garry, it seems that bump you got today maybe a bit more. We will take care of you."
They followed Tebbits down the hallway into a waiting area. Keegan was taken to a different area and given a gowned to change into. The nurse asked her a million questions regarding her medical history and the surgeries she had following the accident. The hospital in Saginaw was affiliated with State University. Majority if her records were in the system. Keegan was taken to the CT scan area by wheel chair. The orderly was an older black man with a deep voice. He chatted casually with Keegan. The room was cold. Keegan was grateful that her ass was not hanging out of the medical robes she had been given. She had learned the trick of hospital garments quickly. Bill laughed at her the first time when she only put on the one smock. Her butt was very visible. The second time she learned to put one smock on the backside and the second to cover the front side. The two would tie together in a nice covering. The orderly helped her on to the scan platform. The technician gave her instructions not to move and to stay very still. Slowly the platform began to slide into the chamber. There was a loud thumping noise as went deeper and deeper into the machine. The technician spoke to her through an intercom. Keegan had a sick feeling in her stomach. She was exhausted emotionally and physically. After a few minutes the platform began to retract. The technician and orderly helped her off the platform and into the wheelchair. She hated hospitals. She hated the smell of disinfectant cleaner. She wanted to go home. She wanted to curl up in her bed and have Gwen hold her.
Keegan was taken to another exam room. The doctor and nurse came in to run an exam on her. They asked questions about her history. Once they were finished she got dressed. As she walked down the hallway. She saw Curtis and the doctor speaking. Curtis got on the phone and called someone as soon as the conversation ended. Gwen was sitting in a chair her arms resting on her knees. She looked worried. She glanced at her cellphone. Keegan looked for a clock. She did not know how long she had been there. Gwen looked up and smiled at her.
"Hi...I talked with your Mom." Gwen said as Keegan sat in the chair next to her.
"I just want to go home. I am done..." Keegan looked over at Curtis. He nodded to her as he hung up the phone. "I wish we could be together tonight. I really need you." Keegan hung her head. "What did my Mom say?"
"She's worried. Call her when you can." Gwen said as she ran her hand up and down on Keegan's back.
"Ready?" Curtis asked as he approached the pair. They nodded. "Keegan, when we get back to Weston, you need to have a couple of more tests done."
"Tomorrow?" Keegan asked. Curtis nodded. "What's wrong?" Keegan asked.
"They want to take pre-cautions. Its routine." Curtis said. "Are you hungry?"
"Starved." They said in unison.
"We can stop and get some food." Curtis commented as his stomach rumbled. "Besides there is a celebration in Rabbit's room tonight. You can go but you are not staying late...Am I understood?"
"Yes, sir." Keegan confirmed his direction. "Can Gwen stay in my room tonight?" Keegan knew it was bold of her to ask. Even Gwen was taken back by the request.
"Yes, only this once. You are to keep an eye on her that is all. Am I understood?" Curtis hinted that he knew about their relationship off the field.
"Yes sir." Gwen replied without hesitation. Keegan's mood skyrocketed from that point on. They stopped on the way back to the hotel and grabbed some food. By the time they got to the hotel Rabbit and Janet's room was packed full of their teammates.
"Garry, you are such the drama queen." Janet said as she faked fainting on the bed. Keegan punched her in the arm. "Can't let me steal your thunder for a minute can you?"
"You did good today. I don't think the goalie knew what to make of you running straight at her screaming."
"I wasn't screaming!"
"You were wailing like a banshee!" Rabbit said as she imitated Janet's scoring run. The team laughed. Keegan smiled. Her head hurt. She wanted to enjoy this moment. This was the first time they felt like a team on and off the field. She moved towards Carol, who seemed to avoid her most of the night.
"Carol, I am sorry if I scared you." Keegan said as she set her soda down on the table. Carol nodded.
"You have nothing to be sorry for. I was glad that I was there. Kee, what if I wasn't in the room. Are you okay?"
"I have to get more tests done once we are back. Did Curtis talk to you?" Keegan asked. Carol nodded. "Is it cool with you?"
"Yeah, its cool. Just keep your clothes on. " Carol teased. "I am going out with a few of people. We are supposed to hit one of the clubs. AJ, Rabbit mainly upper classman. I think Dailey maybe going too."
"Well, I think I am going to pass. It's been a rough day." Keegan smiled and sipped her soda. "Have fun. Stay out of trouble."
Keegan made her way to Gwen side. Gwen was talking with Nicole and Mary. They were talking about the game. Nicole was a good student. She studied hard and was trying to get into medical school. Mary was very quiet and only played on occasion.
"Hello." Keegan said to them. "Nice game today ladies."
"How's your head? Gwen was just saying that you did go to the hospital." Nicole asked.
"Did you pass out?" Mary piped in.
"Yeah, it was weird. I was okay and than boom." Keegan said. "I had a CAT scan done. Curtis wants me to get more tests done tomorrow." Keegan rubbed the goose egg on the back of her head. "I think I am turning in. Have a good night." Keegan headed towards the door.
"Gwen said that Curtis wants her to keep an eye on you. I think that is a good idea. Besides I think the "girls" are heading to a club." Nicole gestured towards the rowdy crowd. "Are you feeling sick?"
"No, just tired." Keegan answered.
"Have you been knocked out before?" Nicole became more inquisitive with her questions.
"I was in a car wreck about a year ago. I was in coma for three days." Keegan stated matter of factly.
"Really. " Nicole stated. She did not question Keegan anymore questions. "Gwen are you going with her?"
"Yeah, its probably best that someone is with her." Gwen smiled.
"Ready....." Keegan asked Gwen as she headed for the door. Nicole whispered something in Gwen ear. Keegan watched Gwen's expression change from a smile to a serious look. Nicole saw Keegan watching them and smiled. She nudged Gwen who went back to smiling. Gwen joined her in the hallway as they walked to Keegan room.
"Do you have to stop for anything in your room?" Keegan asked. Gwen shook her head. They continued walking down the hallway. "What's wrong?" Keegan asked as they stopped at her door. Gwen looked at the floor and than back to Keegan.
"I am just worried about you."
"I have a thick head. I'll be okay." Keegan said as she opened the door. Her head was pounding and the drugs the hospital had given her did not seem to be working. She kicked off her shoes and a wave of dizziness hit her again. "Let's just go to bed." She did not want to alarm Gwen.
"Keegan, you promise me that you will say if you are not feeling well." Gwen sat down on the bed.
"Gwen, I am not feeling well. I am feeling dizzy and my head is killing me." Keegan confessed.
"When did you feel dizzy?"
"Two seconds ago when I took my shoes off." Keegan settled on the bed. "I don't want to be sick." She was on her side. Gwen cuddled up against her back and wrapped her arm around Keegan's waist. She placed her other arm under Keegan's head.
"Just try to get some sleep. When we get to Weston, we can have more tests done." Keegan nodded in agreement as the tears rolled down her cheeks. Gwen held her tight until they fell asleep.
