LIVES CHANGED
9-A
"What the hell are you saying, my son died when he was three." Tony snapped. "Sir, if this is some kind of a joke, I don't find it funny at all."
"This isn't a joke, I spoke with our ex-wife Susan and she confirmed that she gave your son up for adoption. The people that adopted him were named Marshal, and they lived in Florida.
"Damn it, are you saying that the boy Jamie is my son?"
"Yes, I had it confirmed by DNA also. Tony I am sorry, but I wanted to be the one to tell you."
"I appreciate that, but you just ruined my day."
"That wasn't my attention."
"I know that sir, now if you will excuse me I have a family to protect and a lot to think about. Can you tell me if Jamie is safe?"
"Yes, he is staying with me, so he has security around him all the time."
"Thank you sir, I will make arrangements to get him down here."
"Right now, I think that the best thing for him right now is to stay where he is, besides I have a feeling that your whole case is about to explode and end. I just wish I could find out who this damn MMJ is. That person is the key to this whole things, they are the ones paying everyone, or passing the money on."
"Well I would love for the case to be over, but we both know that until everyone who is trying to steal from Malcolm is behind bars this is going to last."
"I understand that, and I am working on it from this end."
"Talk to Rich Mason, the President's sons bodyguard, I am sure he can fill you in on a lot of this."
"I will, and thank you Tony. I haven't told Jamie yet, do you want me too?"
"No, I will do that when I see him again."
Hanging up Tony told Donnie to watch things he needed to step outside. "Tony, are you okay, that call seemed to upset you?"
"I am fine, at least I think I am." Tony mumbled.
At the hospital, the doctors had just finished checking on Papa Daniels and headed over to the intensive care unit where he was going to check on Ian Stillwaters. The charge nurse seeing the doctor coming quickly spit out her gum and his her people's magazine. Standing she waited for the doctor to get to her before she said anything. "Morning doctor Lei."
"Morning Olmsted, how is the patient this morning?"
"He is doing good, I just checked on him." Olmsted lied.
"I see, so checking patients includes reading people magazines and chewing gum."
"I said I just checked on him, you don't have the right to tell me what I can't do while I am waiting."
"You're right, but there are other duties that need to be done and other patients that need to looked after, if your magazine is that important then I think you should find time at lunch, or wait until you get off your shift."
"Why you stuffed shirt." The nurse said in anger. "I'll have you know that all my duties are done and this is the break, to which I am entitled too."
"Then why is it that since I have been standing here talking with you that three patients lights have been flashing and I did notice that they were doing that as I came down the hallway, so you have done your duties. You are pathetic and lazy."
Leaving her standing there the doctor proceeded to Ian's room. The doctor did a quick check and told Man that he would send in a nurse to change his bandages, but other than that he was doing well and could be released within the next week. The doctor went on to tell Ian that he would be off work for at least six weeks and then it would be a desk job until he had gained full use of he left arm again.
The doctor had just left Ian's room when he was paged to the emergency room, where he found a young man lying there badly beaten and bruised.
As for Malcolm and his they had spent two hours at the mall shopping for something special to give to Patrick. Tony and Donnie stayed with them as the state troopers and other secret service agents stood outside the door.
The Jacobs family had gathered the necessities for a large barbeque and with the help of a few friends had gotten it all to the park and set up. Robert Jr. had set up a stereo system and was playing some cold play mixed with one direction and a few other bands the teens listen to. The boys had all gathered together and were in the midst of getting a soccer game going when more kids showed up and asked if they could join. During a rest the boys all sat in the field and quietly talked. Midnight was resting between Aaron and Zeke both boys were rubbing his side when they decided to get back to just kicking the ball between them. Aaron had missed a kick from Zeke and was chasing the ball when a teen reached down and grabbed it. "Can I haven't ball back please?" Aaron asked.
"Not yours anymore kid, I am keeping it." The teen snarled.
Aaron was going to say more, but was beaten to it when a young state trooper came up on them. "Aaron, you know better than to run off."
"I had to get our ball, but he said it wasn't mine." Aaron said as he pointed to the teen.
"I see, well young man what do you have to say."
"Nothing, besides what business is it of yours?" The teen snapped with a grin.
"Well it became my business when you tried to a steal the soccer ball, more so since I am state police officer. Now you have the choice of going to jail or giving the ball back and leaving the park."
The teen was about to throw it back when he saw the other boys starting to surround him. "You throw it at him dude, and I will kick your butt." Zeke yelled.
The teen realizing that he wasn't going to get anywhere handed the ball back. "Now apologize to him." Zeke said.
"Like hell I will." The teen yelled.
"You will and you better mean it." The trooper stated as he started to reach for his handcuffs.
"Fine, I am sorry kid. Here take your ball and have fun."
The teen turned to walk away when Malcolm and Patrick stopped him. Surprised the teen shrank back a bit, but when he saw that neither were going to beat on his he relaxed a bit. "Look, I said I was sorry, so why did you stop me?" He asked.
"Well we were wondering if you would like to join us in a game, maybe stay for the barbeque afterwards." Patrick asked.
"Why would you want me, especially after what I just tried?"
"We feel everyone deserves a second chance, besides you're new to the area and probably need some friends."
"How do you know I am new?"
"Easy, we know most of the kids, since we all are on strike and hang out together." Malcolm said with a smile.
"Yeah right, in whose world have you been living in?" The teen snarled.
"Chill dude, we are trying to be friends here." Patrick said. "I am Patrick, and this is my best friend Malcolm. The little guy you tried to steal the ball from is Aaron and then there is Zeke they are Malcolm's brothers."
"Come on let's play. Lunch will be ready soon and you're free to join us." Malcolm said.
"Well I guess I can stay for a bit, but I got to be home before my parents get there. Please call me Ryan."
"Sure, now let's have fun."
The state trooper had stood back and watched the interaction between the five boys, hoping that it wouldn't break out into a fight. As he watched, he noticed the new kid glancing around all the time, like he was scared of something or someone.
As the game re-started, Ryan seemed to relax a bit, a small smile appeared on his face when Aaron stole the ball from him and ran. As lunch approached Ryan's fear started to return. "Wyan, you come sit with me." Aaron said as he sat beside Zeke.
"I don't know Aaron, I should be getting home." Ryan answered with a small smile. He had just turned to leave when Tony stopped him.
"Ryan, you can tell me to buzz off, but I have to ask you. What is your last name?"
"Danvers, Why?"
"Are you related to the officer that was killed?"
"Yeah, he was my uncle. Dad figured we should move here and see if he can find the truth."
"The Truth?" Donnie asked as he walked up.
"Yes sir, he isn't believing what the police are saying, he thinks that this kid Daniels is to blame."
"Well you can tell your dad that he wasn't. You can also tell your dad that if he has any questions he should give us a call." Tony stated.
"Sure I can do that, but who are you guys, I know one of the guys said he was a state trooper."
With a chuckle, both Donnie and Tony handed Ryan a card with their numbers on them.
"Oh shit, you guys are cops too." Ryan stammered.
"Yes, but we are with the secret service. We are on protection duty right now." Donnie said with a smile. "Where did your family move from?"
"Canada."'
"I see, so you're a long way from home and your friends."
"Yeah I am, but gotta do what dad says."
"Well, have a couple hamburgers with the boys, if you get a hassle, just tell your parents I said you could stay. Donnie grinned.
Sitting beside Aaron, Ryan was enjoying the burgers and chips when Midnight came up and pawed his leg making Ryan jump and Aaron giggle. "It's okay Wyan, he just wants to be your friend." Aaron said as he gave Midnight a piece of his burger.
"He scared the heck out of me." Ryan said. "Who does he belong to?"
"Me and my brothers."
"Mr. Hawks give him to me at the Pwesidents house."
"I think you mean the Presidents house, right." Ryan said with a laugh.
"Uh huh. We got to go there when Malcolm was invited."
"Man that must have been fun, and why was your brother invited to the White House?"
"Well dude, it is simple, Patrick and I are the leaders of the schools strike that hit this country, and well the President wanted to meet with me, then he invited me back to speak with everyone."
"Wait, oh hell, you definitely are not like my dad makes you out to be."
"Nope and before you have a fit I am Malcolm Daniels."
"I have seen you on TV. You are almost as popular as that writer Michael king. I love his books, and the way he has made the heroes all kids like us."
Glancing over at Patrick, Malcolm just smiled. "I have never read any of his books." Malcolm said with a smirk.
""You should, you will like them. That guys keeps you wanting more."
"I read one on the bus home, man it was good, I wish I could meet the guy and tell him." Patrick grinned.
"Yeah well, maybe someday. Anyways guys thanks for the burgers and letting me stay here." Ryan said with a frown.
"Ryan, listen here is my number call me if you want to come visit. You are more than welcome."
"Thanks, Malcolm, and you're an okay dude."
"So are you when you lose the attitude." Malcolm laughed.
After Lunch was over Malcolm watched as Ryan walked away, his shoulders hunched and his pace was a kind of shuffle. To Malcolm, it looked like Ryan really didn't want to go home. For the rest of the afternoon the boys kicked the soccer ball around and Patrick's sister sat and texted on her cell phone. That night Malcolm sat in his room writing, but his mind wasn't on what he was doing, something was nagging at his mind.
The families left the park latter in the afternoon after the boys had played another game of soccer. Malcolm was up in his room writing when Tony stepped into his room. "Malcolm, I need to leave for a few days. I have to fly to Washington with some reports and I need to see the Vice President. I will leave Donnie here with you."
"Tony isn't he coming with Ben on Monday?"
"No, the two never travel together, too much of a risk of them both being assassinated."
"Oh I never thought of that, but can't it wait till after he has been here. I really want you with us."
"I know you do, and I wish I could, but this is far too important to me."
"Okay, but you had better come back." Malcolm said with a frown.
"I promise you that I will be back as soon as I can."
"Good." Malcolm said as he stood and gave Tony a hug. "Oh here take this and keep it safe please."
"What is it?" Tony asked.
"My will."
"Are you serious, Malcolm you're too young to think of things like that."
"I know, but. I don't know something told me to write it."
"Okay, but I will give it back to you when I return."
"Okay." Malcolm said, feeling a bit lost.
"Malcolm, everything is going to be fine. Just relax. You have court on Tuesday then Thursday you are joining the President for his announcements. Everything will be okay."
"I don't know Tony, I just have this feeling."
"Well that is all it is. Now finish your book there."
"Okay, and Tony thanks, you will make a great father someday."
