Part IX
It was a cold day. Tommy's many layers of clothing did not seem to cut the chill in the air. The barn doors were closed and it was quiet. The recent colder nights and shorter days created a solitude working environment for Tommy. Rick had been occupied with football until they lost their last playoff game. Football season was over but hunting season was wide open. Tommy noticed Tank being restless in his stall.
"Easy boy," Tommy said, "He'll be back. He's probably been tormenting animals in the woods but he'll come back around."
Tommy wanted to stay away from Jack and he got his wish. Ever since their `hunting trip' he hadn't seen much of Jack or Rick. At first it seemed like a relief; but now he was feeling alone. He dared not consider the alpha jocks as friends; but he was at least serving a purpose serving them.
`Oh well,' Tommy thought. He had finished his chores and hung around the barn for a while but no one came. He turned out the lights and went home.
The following day was Wednesday. He pulled into the school parking lot and noticed Rick's truck. No one was there. He went to class and faced another day alone yet surrounded by people. Tommy realized he was at an all new low when he passed Jack in the hallway. Jack was by himself. When Tommy got close he said, "Hey," in passing.
"Faggot," was Jack's only reply and he spat on his shirt as he passed.
Tommy looked down and wiped Jack's spit off with his hands. He was actually excited for the attention.
The barn that evening started as more of the same. The parking lot was empty and the barn doors were already shut. Tommy sighed and began his chores. He hadn't been working long when he heard the four-wheeler pull up to the barn doors. Tommy's hopes rose thinking that might be Rick. He watched as the doors opened but was soon disappointed to see Billy come into sight.
`Shit,' Tommy thought. Rick's mean, blackmailing little brother was not the company he was hoping for.
Billy wasted no time. He walked up to Tommy and said, "Fuck its cold. It must suck to be our servant and work when it's freezing outside!" It was hardly freezing temperatures but Billy made his point.
Billy checked on his horse Nicker. Tommy said nothing and started his stall work. He was about to enter Tank's stall when Billy summoned him.
"Bootboy, get over here!" Billy said pissed off.
Tommy instinctively followed orders and walked up to Billy who was looking at his horse.
"Yes Billy?"
"Billy?" he questioned, "You work for me. Call me `boss.'"
"Sorry sir; yes boss?"
"That's more like it," Billy said, "Look at Nicker. What's wrong with that picture?"
Nicker was eating some hay. Tommy noticed nothing out of the ordinary.
"What?" he asked.
"Are you cleaning his stall right?" Billy asked, "He has dried piss all over his side."
Tommy looked at Nicker and said, "Yes sir, all the horses have been bedding down more lately. He must have laid in his wet spot."
"He must have," Billy replied, "Perhaps if you put more bedding in his stall this wouldn't happen."
"I can do that," Tommy said. He did not want to argue with Billy. He was a vindictive mean little shit.
Billy went into the stall and stared at the wet urine spot in the middle of the stall. He led his horse to the wash stall to brush him off. Tommy fetched a muck bucket. He decided to clean Nicker's stall first to appease Billy. He had just gotten into the stall when Billy followed him in.
"Looks like another lesson is in order," Billy said sadistically. "Take off your jacket."
"What?"
Billy did not reply. His facial expression change from aggravated to pissed off in an instant.
"Okay," Tommy said removing his jacket. Tommy set his jacket outside the stall. He still had on a long sleeve t-shirt.
Billy stood near the middle of the stall where it was wet from Nicker's piss.
"Let's see how you like it. Lay down."
Tommy hesitated.
"Mother-fucker lay down in that piss spot that you are not cleaning properly. Now!"
Tommy knew better than not comply. He slowly sat down and then laid back as instructed. His back rested in the wet, soiled dust. He could feel the horse piss begin to soak into his shirt. Billy smiled and then placed his boot onto Tommy's chest. He shifted his weight forcing Tommy's back deeper into the wet muck. Tommy's shirt was drenched in urine now. He could feel the urine on his back and it was cold.
"Does it feel nice?" Billy asked.
"No sir."
"Are you going to do better?"
"Yes sir."
"You better," Billy snarled. He removed his boot from Tommy stomach but kicked some of the dried dust in his face.
"Oops, my bad," Billy said laughing. "While you're down their . . ," Billy stomped his boot a couple of times near Tommy's head.
Tommy knew what he was commanding and began to lick the dust off the top of Billy's boot. His shirt and back were wet and cold. He had to reposition himself to service Billy's boots. Tommy was on his knees and could feel his jeans begin to soak up the horse piss. His heart jumped when he heard Billy's zipper.
"What are you doing?"
"Not your concern. Head down. Keep licking my boots."
Tommy had no choice. The video Billy had of him masturbating in Rick's stall next to his horse terrified him. Tommy feared what Rick might do if he saw it. Then he felt it. Warm piss! Billy was pissing on his back. `How dare he?' Tommy thought. He had no idea of the depths of Billy's sadistic nature. The stream of piss was hot and warmed his body but Tommy knew this would only be temporary. The cold air would soon make him even colder because his shirt was now drenched. As Billy's stream slowed Tommy felt it run down on the back of his neck and then his head. He could feel the drips of piss as Billy shook his young cock dry. Tommy did not look up. He continued to service Billy's boots and said nothing. He was afraid of what he might say. He was furious at the audacity of Rick's brother.
"Let that be a lesson for you," Billy said. Billy's boot pulled away from Tommy's now brown tongue as Billy left the stall. He returned to the wash stall to finish brushing Nicker.
Tommy stood up. His back and knees were wet. As he feared, he began to get cold. Tommy stepped outside of the stall and started to pull his shirt off. He couldn't wait to remove it and put his warm jacket back on.
"What the fuck are you doing?" Billy asked from down the hall.
"It's cold, I'm putting my jacket on," Tommy replied.
"Nicker can't take his coat off just because you did a shitty job cleaning his stall. Keep it on!"
Tommy sighed and reluctantly put his jacket on over his urine soaked shirt. He suspected that Billy would not stay long and he was right. Tommy cleaned Nicker's stall; bedding it heavy. He was working on Tank's stall as Billy put Nicker up for the night.
Billy walked by Tank's stall and said, "Smells like you need a shower boot boy!" He laughed and then left for home.
Tommy listened for the four-wheeler to leave. When he was convinced that Billy had left, he removed his wet shirt. He was so angry he cried. "I'd like to kick his sadistic ass," Tommy said to himself. He wasn't even sure if he could do it (Billy was stocky for a kid) but he would like to try. He figured the pounding and torment that Rick would give him for doing so may even be worth it! `How dare he piss on me?!' Tommy thought to himself. He reeked of urine; both Billy's and Nicker's, and tasted the grit from Billy's boot. Tommy decided that he would have to deal with Billy; but how?
Tommy was nearly done with his work when his phone buzzed. He received a text from Rick, billy says ur slacking on stalls strike 1.' Tommy's anger jumped to rage. That little shit humiliated him and then told his brother! The fucking nerve,' Tommy thought. He did not reply back. He finished his chores and thought about seeking employment somewhere else.
The next morning Tommy received another text from Rick. It instructed him to meet him at his truck. It was a little warmer so Rick and Jack were having breakfast in their usual spot on Rick's tailgate. Both jocks were wearing their boots, jeans, and a camo jacket. Tommy could hear Jack smacking his biscuit from a distance. `Didn't his mother teach him to eat with his mouth closed?' Tommy wondered as he approached the alpha jocks.
"So why are you slacking on the stalls?" Rick asked as Tommy came near.
"I guess I didn't bed them enough for the colder nights. I'm doing that now. Sorry about that." Tommy answered.
"Sounds like Faggot needs another lesson," Jack said with his mouth full. Bits of biscuit shot from his open mouth which disgusted Tommy. "Disrespect is not tolerated!"
Tommy did not answer Jack but looked at Rick and said, "I meant no disrespect; I'm still learning."
"All the more reason for a lesson," Jack suggested.
And then it happened. A momentary lapse of judgment fueled Tommy's frustration and he said sternly, "I'm talking to Rick!"
Both jock's expressions changed. Rick looked at Tommy with surprise and wonder. Jack's demeanor went from lackadaisical to pissed-off! Jack jumped off the tailgate and moved close to Tommy asking, "What the fuck did you say?"
Tommy immediately regretted his actions. He looked Jack in the eyes and said, "I'm sorry; that was out of line."
"You're fucking right that was out of line," Jack snarled. His body swelled and Tommy could see his chest explode and muscles tighten; even under his heavy jacket.
"He said he was sorry," Rick interjected but Jack's expression did not change.
"I didn't mean to disrespect you, I'm just frustrated by my fuck-up," Tommy explained. Tommy's voice was soft and low. His eyes lowered. The anger in Jack's face worried him.
Jack's loud opposition to Tommy's comment began to draw attention from other students nearby. Their interest was peaked at the possibility of a physical confrontation.
"Well you did disrespect me and now it's time to show some respect. Kiss my boots fag!" Jack commanded loudly. Jack noticed the attention they were drawing so he decided to make a spectacle out of Tommy.
Tommy hesitated but Jack responded even louder, "Now! Or we can settle this the old fashioned way!"
Tommy wanted to fight, cry, and run all at the same time. Neither option had a positive ending for him so he fell to his knees and quickly kissed the tops of both Rick's boots. He could hear snickers from his classmates watching nearby.
Tommy quickly returned to his feet and said, "I'm sorry."
"Get the fuck out of here," Jack commanded.
Tommy looked at Rick. Rick's expression was a `you deserved that' look. Embarrassed and ashamed Tommy left and quickly made his way to the building.
At lunch Tommy could not eat. His paranoia caused him to wonder about anyone who looked his way. Did they see him degrade himself at Jack's feet? With no appetite he decided to abandon lunch and go to his next class early to wallow in self-pity. He couldn't help but notice one of the football players follow him out of the cafeteria. Tommy thought he was imagining things until the jock followed him to his class room. When Tommy entered the room it was empty. It wasn't long before he wasn't alone.
Once inside Tommy turned to face his stocker. "What do you want?"
"Chill man," he said, "Name's Ben. I saw Jack bullying you this morning."
"I know I'm a pussy but it wasn't like I had much choice; there was two of them." Tommy was frustrated and felt like he had nothing to lose.
"Yeah, Jack's a dick," Ben said much to Tommy's surprise.
"You really think so?"
"Fuck yeah," Ben replied, "He bullied the shit out of me in middle school. You are not the first to submit to that prick."
"What'd you do?" Tommy asked. His curiosity was peaked.
"I grew!" Ben said with a chuckle. Ben was a beefy varsity football player. Tommy had seen him at the jock's table but never knew much about him.
Tommy grinned, "Well there's not much hope for me then." Tommy laughed. It felt good to laugh with another person who seemed genuine and actually cared. Tommy's point was valid though. He was only about 5-9 and skinny. Ben was easily 6-1 and muscular.
"There's always hope man," Ben said with surprising compassion, "Even if it's graduating and getting out of this hell hole. I thought you should know you're not the only one Jack's picked on. Not too long ago he beat the shit out of my friend Ethan."
"I know; I was there." Tommy confessed.
"I wasn't," Ben said, "Most of the team was but Ethan's alright and had a legit beef with Jack. I knew he'd get his ass kicked though. Jack's strong and ruthless. It's hard to fight that physically and win. I didn't want to see him get beat down."
"Thanks Ben, you're alright ... for a jock," Tommy said a little hesitantly. He hoped his stab at humor would be well received."
Ben grunted and growled, "Watch it!" But then he laughed and said, "Just stick with your friends; you'll be okay."
Tommy's smile disappeared and he said, "Friends? That may be a challenge."
"You got no friends?" Ben asked surprised.
Tommy looked ashamed and said, "You know, new guy and all."
"You fish right?"
"Sure," Tommy lied.
"Alright then," Ben said, "I don't hunt much and my boys have been all about hunting lately. You wanna go fishing with me Saturday morning? I'll take you to my secret spot."
"Sounds great to me," Tommy said excited. They exchanged numbers and Ben said that he would text him. They planned to meet at the DQ for breakfast at 8:00am.
When Ben left Tommy wasn't sure what to think. Ben seemed genuine but he was a jock. A part of Tommy feared that this was some cruel joke. He finally concluded that meeting Ben was worth the risk. If Ben was sincere then he could sure use a friend. `I better Google fishing,' Tommy thought to himself.
Tommy was excited when Saturday morning came. It was a cool morning but the weather forecast promised sunny skies. Tommy had received a text from Ben confirming their fishing trip and he was anxiously waiting at the local Dairy Queen by 7:50. He waited on Ben before ordering breakfast and prayed that this wasn't some prank.
An older Toyota SUV pulled into the parking lot. It was modified country style with a roof rack and LED light bars attached to the rack and brush guard. Tommy breathed a sigh of relief when Ben stepped out of the SUV. Ben was wearing tight jeans, boots, and one of the high school's football hoodies. He had an air about him that screamed confidence. Tommy wondered how he could have ever been picked on.
Ben entered the restaurant and nodded toward Tommy before heading to the counter to order. Tommy jumped up from the table and fell in behind him.
"Sup Tom boy," Ben greeted and then turned his attention the cashier. "Let's see, I'll have a double order of biscuits and gravy with sliced tomatoes, two sides – make that three sides of bacon, an orange juice, and a coffee."
Holy fuck,' Tommy thought, That's a week's worth of breakfast for me!'
"Hungry?" Tommy asked in a surprised tone.
"Most important meal of the day Thomas."
After Ben paid a surprising small amount of money for his breakfast feast – apparently another football hero perk – Tommy ordered a regular biscuit and gravy with a Mountain Dew.
Breakfast small talk was limited as Ben eagerly devoured his breakfast. Tommy didn't even finish his.
After they were done Ben said, "You can leave your car here and ride with me."
"Okay, let me grab my fishing pole."
"Let's see what you got." Ben said as he followed Tommy to his car. Tommy had purchased an inexpensive Wal-Mart special complete with rod, reel, and some rubber worms.
"Will this work?" Tommy asked showing Ben his purchase.
"Umm," Ben replied, "This looks brand new. Let's not mess it up and you can use one of mine. I have lots of gear."
"It's shit huh?" Tommy asked.
"My shit would literally be offended that you referred to this as `shit,' but now that you mentioned it..."
"Sorry Ben, I don't have much money and no fishing gear."
"It's cool man." Ben said, "I've got too much."
On their way Ben informed Tommy they were heading for a pond his grandfather owned. He confessed that it wasn't really his `secret spot' - he would have to blindfold Tommy to take him there - but it was a good stocked pond and they should catch something.
The entrance to the farm was gated. After maneuvering the gate Ben drove several hundred yards back to a wooded area where the pond was. The pond was much bigger than Tommy expected. Ben masterfully whipped the SUV around and backed to a grassy spot on the bank.
After a moment of setting up chairs and organizing the fishing gear it was time to get serious. Tommy watched Ben's every move. He did not want to look clueless. Ben handed Tommy a rod with an open spinning reel.
"I figured you would prefer that to a baitcaster," Ben said matter-of-factly.
`Sure,' Tommy thought. He was clueless.
Ben baited his hook. Tommy watched as he effortlessly threaded the worm on the sharp hook. When he was done he offered the bait to Tommy. Tommy was nervous. Ben was watching him as he fumbled the worm around the hook; eventually dropping it.
"First time fishing?" Ben asked. He was surprisingly non-judgmental.
"Yeah," tommy confessed ashamed.
"Here, watch me." Ben said. He took the hook from Tommy and slowly demonstrated his process. For fear of further embarrassing Tommy, Ben cast the line into the pond and handed the rod to Tommy.
"If something hits it jerk the shit out of it. That will set the hook."
"Can do," Tommy said.
Ben wandered several yards over, stood on a large rock, and cast his line into the pond away from Tommy's. Tommy watched as he slowly reeled in the line and then cast it back out.
"Thanks for taking me," Tommy said. He enjoyed gazing on Ben's rustic physique.
"Don't mention it buddy." Ben replied.
"You do this a lot?" Tommy asked.
"As much as possible." Ben replied, "I fish alone many times but it's nice to have company sometimes."
Tommy grinned and turned his attention back to his line.
After several minutes Ben broke the silence by asking, "So, if you don't mind my asking, why was Jack picking on you?"
`Oh fuck,' Tommy thought. He couldn't tell Ben the whole story so he replied with a less-than-half truth, "I guess he's just a dick."
Ben smiled and said, "That's for sure."
Tommy commented, "It's hard to imagine him picking on you though."
"He used to," Ben admitted, "But I earned some respect when I grew and started playing ball with the guys. He tried some shit in the locker room but I stood up for myself. He wasn't sure if he could take me back then so he backed off and never bothered me again."
"Standing up to him is probably not the best option for me," Tommy said.
"You have to stand up for yourself or you'll be kissing boots your whole life."
Tommy did not reply. He just looked at his line and thought, `you have no idea who you're talking too; a professional boot kisser.'
"Sorry," Ben said, "I shouldn't have mentioned that."
"Don't be sorry," Tommy said, "It is what it is." He looked over at Ben. His athletic build and confidant nature sparked an interest in serving Ben.
I'd fucking kiss your boots and like it,' Tommy thought. I'd do anything for you.' He was shocked to have feelings for Ben as hot as he did for Rick. Thinking of Rick made Tommy ask, "What do you think of Jack's buddy Rick? I work for their family you know."
"Rick's cool," Ben replied, "A hell of a quarterback. He's the reason we got so far this year. He and Jack have been friends forever. To be honest sometimes I think their queer for each other."
Oh shit,' Tommy thought, That did not sound promising.' Tommy didn't care though. Ben was the first person to actually treat him as a human. It was a pleasant change. He finally responded, "Really?"
"Probably not," Ben said, "But who knows. Fucking fags are everywhere these days."
`So much for that,' Tommy thought to himself. His dreams of servicing Ben's boots changed to a fear of being stomped by them. Tommy replied to Ben's statement for fear of suspicion, "I know what you mean."
After a few hours of fishing Tommy learned how to cast. He wasn't nearly as fluid as Ben's master casting skills but it got the job done. Ben caught several fish and threw them back. Tommy struck out. As they were packing up Ben told Tommy, "Don't worry about coming up empty. They call it fishing not catching for a reason!"
Tommy laughed and said, "This was great; I hope to do it again but I need to head back. I have to go to the barn to feed the afternoon grain."
"At Rick's barn?" Ben asked.
"Yes"
"It's close to us. If you don't mind I'll stop by there with you. I like seeing the horses."
"Okay," Tommy reluctantly agreed. He wondered at how this might play out.
When they arrived at the barn there were more cars than usual for this time of year. The warm, sunny day brought people back to the barn. Tommy and Ben strolled down the hallway. As Tommy feared, Billy was there and walking toward them.
"Hey Frankie," Ben said as they approached.
"It's Billy," Billy said rather annoyed.
"My bad," Ben said. His tone made Tommy believe that Ben really didn't care if he got Rick's little brother's name wrong. "Is Rick here?"
"You just missed him. We practiced poles together. I got my best time yet." Billy said proudly.
Ben did not acknowledge Billy's accomplishments and began to look at the horses. Billy frowned about his lack of praise. Tommy loved it.
Ben turned his attention to Tommy and asked, "So how much do they eat?"
"It's different for each one." Tommy said showing Ben to the feed room. They left Billy standing in the hallway as if he didn't even exist. Tommy enjoyed ignoring him but feared possible consequences at the same time. As Tommy showed Ben the feeding process Ben pulled a can of tobacco from his back pocket and put a dip in.
Ben noticed Tommy watching and offered him the can, "Do you dip?"
"No," Tommy replied.
"Nasty habit. I shouldn't either. Just about all the football team dips though," he said spitting on the dusty concrete floor. "Can I feed one?"
Tommy handed him a feed bucket and told him which horse it was for. Tommy chose a horse at the end of hallway to allow some time alone in the feed room. When Ben left Tommy quickly knelt down and collected Ben's spit off the dirty floor onto his index finger. He sucked it clean. It was nasty but he wanted to taste a part of his new friend. He was glad that Billy did not catch him but it was worth the risk.
Ben returned saying, "Man, they act like they've never eaten before!"
"They like feed time," Tommy agreed.
When they were finished feeding Billy came into the feed room.
"Ben, are you coming to the cookout next weekend."
"You mean Rick isn't hunting?"
"Nah," Billy replied, "It's the juvenile hunt."
"Will you be hunting?" Ben asked.
"When I hunt it's with Rick," Billy said a little annoyed.
"I might show up. Wanna go Thomas?" Ben asked Tommy.
`Shit,' Tommy thought. Given the dynamics of that scenario, Tommy thought it unwise to attend and replied, "No, I don't believe so."
At that time Rick showed up. The three had left the feed room and met Rick in the hallway.
"Hey Rick," Ben said. "Whatcha up to?"
"Billy text me that you were here; I figured I'd stop by."
"Yeah," Ben said, "Tommy here was showing me the horses. It's been a while since I was here."
"I didn't know you were into horses." Rick stated.
"Pure bred country boy," Ben said pointing to his own chest, "You know I like horses."
"Cool," Rick said, "We'll have to ride sometime. There's several steeds you can choose from. I bet Billy would even let you ride ole' Nicker."
"How about you let me ride a fast horse instead!" Ben said teasing Billy.
Tommy watched Billy's expression. He was not amused. In fact, he looked pissed off.
"Funny," Billy said, "I gotta go. See you later Thomas."
Tommy was worried. He did not like how Billy singled him out and referred to him as `Thomas' as Ben did.
"Thomas?" Rick questioned, "I thought you went by Tommy."
Tommy did not have a chance to reply. Ben spoke up and said, "I've been trying to figure out what to call Tom boy here. I can stick with Tommy if you prefer."
"I answer to many names," Tommy admitted.
Rick laughed. It was a little out-of-sorts for the conversation. Rick recovered by asking, "You guys hanging out now?"
"Yeah," Ben said, "We went fishing while you were freezing your ass off missing deer in the woods. Ain't that right Thomas?"
"Yes sir," Tommy replied.
Ben continued, "Well, I'm trying to talk Tom here into going to your dad's cookout next weekend."
"Of course," Rick said, "You should definitely come."
Tommy did not like the sound of that. In the company of his new friend Tommy discovered a little confidence and said, "I'm not sure everyone there would appreciate my coming."
Ben believed Tommy was only referring to Jack and said, "If you're worried about Jack, he'll be busy charming the ladies I'm sure."
"Right," Rick said sarcastically, "I don't believe Jack has ever charmed a lady or anyone else for that matter."
Rick and Ben laughed. Tommy remained quiet. He was becoming increasingly uncomfortable and just wanted to leave.
"What's up with him?" Ben asked Rick, "Why is he such a prick sometimes."
Rick replied, "He is who he is. It's important to know who you are in the world."
Tommy understood Rick loud and clear. Rick was not referring to Jack in that statement. Tommy needed to leave; and leave now. He looked at his phone and said, "Oops, I gotta go Ben. My mom wants me to pick some groceries up for dinner tonight. Care to drive me back to my car?"
"You got it." Ben said and then looked at Rick saying, "Later man; yeah, we need to ride some time. Peace out."
"Later," Rick replied and then turned his attention to his horse.
On the ride back Ben and Tommy were quiet for a while. Tommy got the impression that Ben wanted him to talk but he didn't want to force the issue. After it was clear the Tommy wasn't going to speak first, Ben questioned, "Groceries?"
Tommy just shook his head unconvincingly.
"I think we both know that was bullshit. Why were you so edgy? Does Rick pick on you too?"
"You know how it is," Tommy said, "I'm no jock. I don't fit in with you guys. You know that."
Ben allowed some time for Tommy to think and then said, "You were fitting in with me today. I'm no shrink but let me say I believe it's within your control to be Thomas or Tommy."
"You don't like my name?"
"You know what I mean."
Tommy sighed and said, "You know that's easy to say when you grow into a jock."
"Fair enough," Ben said, "I don't mean to make you mad."
"You didn't," Tommy replied, "You've been the nicest person to me since I moved here. Thanks."
"No problem buddy. We can go fishing next Saturday too if you like."
"Sounds great. I'll even bait my own hook if you promise not to worry about my social status."
"Okay," Ben replied, "It's a deal."
"Besides," Tommy joked, "Kissing boots isn't that bad once you get used to it."
"Grose," Ben said, "Just don't start licking them. It's all downhill from there."
"I'll try to remember that," Tommy laughed trying not to laugh at the situation.
When Tommy got to his car he noticed he had two texts. One from Billy said, see you soon thomas.' The other one was from Rick and said, barn. tonight. 9.'
Tommy tossed his phone into the seat next to him and yelled, "Fuck!"
