Love From The Ashes
Chapter 14 – Part 2
Too many Calls
Jamie has laid down for a nap; meanwhile, Cam sits in the living room enjoying a book when his phone rings. He looks at his phone's display to see if he wants to answer it. It's his sister calling, and he chooses to answer the phone.
"Hello, Sis! What's going on?"
"Nothing; I thought I would call to see how everyone was doing."
Cameron doesn't know what to tell Sophie besides the truth, so he does.
"I'm trying to keep Jamie from worrying too much about not being at work. He fades a little bit every time the scanner goes off. I'm sure he's dying to be back to work."
Sophie can only imagine how her brother's boyfriend is feeling. Jamie sees it as a form of torture.
"Have you guys been hanging out at the house or getting out and doing things?"
When she is feeling down sometimes, it helps to get out of the house. It makes sense that maybe they might get out of the house a bit more now that Jamie is home recovering.
"We've been staying home a bit more, but we have been getting out to walk the dog or just to get out and walk."
She can imagine it would be nice to just spend time with each other while enjoying their walk. Cameron and Sophie spend a few minutes talking with each other before ending the call and going about their day.
***
Jamie wakes to find that his boyfriend has cuddled up next to him. He loves his babe. Right now, though, he is feeling a bit down about being at home. He decides to try and call his best friend. In a heartbeat, he starts the phone call. Brayden answers the phone call.
"Hey Brayden, how are you?"
This call might be more about venting and just getting over the stress.
"I'm good, my friend. We've been busy today, and it's been a bit crazy."
Jamie can tell it's been crazy from the sounds of the calls that have come over the scanner. He hates days like that.
"How have you been doing, Jamie?"
Jamie thought about the question a bit. He doesn't want Brayden to worry about him, but he doesn't want to lie.
"It's tiring. I want to be at work. I miss the crew."
He tells Brayden. His friend knows exactly what to say to Jamie.
"Hey, we miss you too, man. We are going to celebrate when you get back with us."
Jamie doesn't want to wait that long to see his friends. He wants to see his work family. It feels good to hear from his brother from another mother. Brayden has never failed him. Jamie walks back to the bedroom while his boyfriend sleeps and decides to hang out with his guy.
"Hey Brayden, Cameron looks pretty cute in the bed right now."
Jamie tells Brayden, who smirks at his friend. Something is about to end their call.
***
The guys enjoy catching up when Jamie suddenly hears the alarm echoing through the station. He then can listen to the announcements coming over the speaker.
"Bye, Brayden. I need to go. I'll talk to you later."
Brayden says goodbye. Cameron wakes up to find Jamie staring at the phone in his hand. Jamie sits on the bed and then notices that Cameron is awake. He kisses Cameron and Cameron kisses him.
"You feeling okay, Jamie?"
Jamie loves the concern that Cameron has for him. Cameron gets up out of bed and walks into the kitchen. There is shopping that needs to get done, and maybe it will help to get his mind off whatever is going on with his love.
***
Cameron manages to get Jamie out of the house and to the grocery store. With their list in hand, the guys are in no rush to wrap up the shopping. They go down each aisle, getting what they need and feeling good about it.
"I don't know why but I am enjoying the shopping tonight."
Jamie tells Cameron. Cam is glad that his boyfriend is relaxing a bit. Getting away from the house seems to help take Jamie's mind off whatever is happening in his head. Cameron takes his boyfriend's hands. They walk through the store hand in hand. It actually feels good to be hand in hand in like this. A part of Cameron fights the whole hand-holding thing, but he knows that Jamie needs his reassurance, or at least it feels like he does.
"We needed to go shopping, and I thought it might do you some good to get away from the house."
Cameron somehow knows what his man needs before his boyfriend even knows it. They wrap up their shopping, pay for their goods, and then head home.
***
Jamie puts the groceries away while Cameron takes Princess outside. Cameron makes sure to take her into the backyard. When Jamie finishes putting the groceries away, he sits in the dining room. Cameron and Princess come back into the house. She heads straight for her owner.
"Hey Princess, were you a good girl for Cameron?"
Cameron smiles as he watches the tail wagging. Jamie was looking at the dog and then up at Cam.
"Was she a good girl?"
Cameron reaches down and pets the dog on her back. She turns around and gives Cam a couple licks. While Princess is occupied with Cameron, Jamie gets a snack for her.
"She was a perfect girl."
Jamie reaches out a hand to the dog. In his hands, he holds the snack. She delicately accepts the snack from his hands.
"Good job, girl!"
She loves Jamie. Jamie and Cameron adore her too. It's time for Princess to go to bed.
"Kennel, girl!"
Princess heads for her bed inside her kennel. Jamie locks up the kennel, and then he looks at his boyfriend. He takes his hand, and they head into the bedroom.
***
Jamie strips down and gets under the covers in the bedroom. Cameron enjoys the view. The guys get in bed together. They turn on the television and watch some shows on the television. Jamie enjoys having Cameron in his arms. The guys have been talking about how therapy is with Cameron. Cameron is dealing with some of the issues related to his assault. He has come so far in his life. Jamie has been fantastic in supporting his boyfriend while Cameron heals his mind. Cameron remembers the first time that he showered with Jamie. He fought back a panic attack because he was worried about being assaulted. Now, he can be around his boyfriend while he is naked. Cam's boyfriend loves being around him and cuddling up next to him. Some might say their relationship is kind of different, but then it's nobody's business what goes on in the bedroom. They watch television and just enjoy their time together.
***
The guys are sitting in bed watching television together when Cameron falls asleep in his boyfriend's arms out of nowhere. It's a safe place where Cam feels like no one else can touch him. He loves being with him. Jamie turns off the television and rests his head on his pillow. Eventually, he falls asleep next to his boyfriend. This is Jamie's favorite way to fall asleep; the same can be said about Cameron.
***
Cameron and Jamie are in a deep sleep. Suddenly, Cameron finds himself in a dream. He is in the bedroom, just sitting on the bed. Jamie has been called to a fire, so he is no longer home. His anxiety over the possibility of Jamie getting hurt is troubling the man. As he is about to burst from the feelings welling up inside of him, his phone rings. It's the chief.
"I'm sorry, Cameron. Jamie...was fighting the fire when there was an accident. I'm sorry, Cameron, we did everything. He didn't make it."
Now, he is out of bed and collapses onto the floor. Cameron is beside himself. Outside of the dream, Jamie can hear his boyfriend sobbing. He wakes up and then holds his boyfriend.
"Cameron, wake up! Wake up."
Cameron wakes up and sees his boyfriend. It's like he has seen a ghost.
"You're alive! You're alive!"
Cameron says to Jamie. Jamie isn't letting go.
"I am alive. Want to tell me what happened in that mind of yours?"
Jamie patiently waits for him to speak.
"You-you went to a fire. You were fighting a fire, and an accident happened. Chief...chief called and said you died."
Jamie sits there, just holding his baby. He doesn't want to let go, either. The guys don't say anything. They simply sit there and hold each other and kiss each other. Soon, the guys fall asleep again.
***
When morning finally comes, Jamie wakes up and looks at his sleeping boyfriend's form. He's grateful for his boyfriend. It's hard for him to see Cameron's anxiety and fears getting the best of him. Their relationship is not what comes to mind when you think of relationships. What's important for them is that they love each other. Jamie knows that someday, he and Cameron will be married, giving him hope. He also knows that Cameron wants kids. When he sees that Cameron is still sleeping, he lays down next to him and goes back to sleep.
