Magicks of the Mind Chapter 1 I woke up gasping for air, terrified of the dream which I can never remember. All I know is that I was scared; terrified for my life, fighting to stay alive. My muscles have been weak the past 6 days because of it. Every morning when I wake up I feel like I have just run a marathon. I looked over at the alarm clock, now blaring into my ear. "Shit!" I screamed to nothing in particular. The clock read 9:59. I had again slept through an hour and a half of my blaring alarm; not budging from sleep until the fear released me. My name is Benjamin; Benjamin Xela. That's pronounced zell, much like hell. Ironic, since my life also resembles hell right now. My friends call me Ben, so I guess you can as well. I drug myself out of the bed in my apartment style dorm room on the third floor of the newest dormitory belonging to Flynn Falls University. I began to lie back down in the bed, but I told myself "You're going to fail and be flipping burgers for the rest of your life if you keep missing classes, Ben." Telling myself that always gets me up. I flipped burgers at a joint down the road from my home for 6 months. I vowed to myself never to work at such a place again. I hopped into the shower, walking naked into the bathroom, knowing my roommate had already gone to class. Once I dried myself off and got dressed, I checked the news real quick before going to get breakfast and going to my second class of the day, psychology. I arrived in class with 10 minutes to spare so I begun reading the assignment given to us last we had class. Interestingly, the topic was `Rationalization of Paranormal Activities with Psychology'. I figured this section would be interesting and bring a good laugh so I buried myself in the section. The gist of it said that individuals with abnormal brain function tend to believe they can do and see things which do not exist and can not happen. Such as see ghosts, predict the future, etc. Sometimes the cases are so real, that the person can cause effects physically to their bodies because they believe it is real. "Stupid crazy people." I laughed to myself. The instructor came in class, talked for an hour about nothing important, often straying to talk about her sex life or someone she saw at the park. It seems no psychology instructors can actually stay on topic. `Good thing I'm only taking this class as an elective.' I thought to myself. I went back to my room, and locked myself inside, as usual. I got online and begun to play some shoot `em up games to release some tension from forcing myself to stay awake in class for so long. After about 50 minutes I gave up; being too tired to concentrate. I lay back down in bed, just meaning to rest my eyes, and fell into a deep sleep. When I woke up I knew that something wasn't right. I could feel it. The eerie feeling that haunts you before something terrible happens was under my skin. I sat up, looking around for clues; then it happened. A massive explosion shook my room, broke my window and rattled my chest, while throwing me up against the wall. My window was on the inside of the building, facing the common area in the center, much like a park. Once I re-gained my composure, I dusted myself off, not taking the time to check for any wounds. I looked out the hole that I used to call a window, and saw the opposite side of the building to mine engulfed in a massive fire. The smell of smoke filled the air as giant black clouds wafted up from the midsection of the building. I could even hear one person screaming for their life over the loud sounds of the fire crackling and popping. I decided it was time to get out of the building, so I grabbed my keys, wallet, and cell phone and ran out the door. There were holes in the concrete floor between myself and the nearest staircase. I looked for another route, however behind me was a blazing fire that I dared not get near. I feared that the building may collapse at any minute. The sounds of the cement trembling, metal bending, and screams of pain was like hearing a poltergeist wail next to your ear. I turned to run and leap across the gap between myself and the staircase. I gathered up as much speed as I could, and jumped. I then realized that I wasn't going to make it, while plummeting 15 feet to the level below. I fell to the ground with a resounding crack, I knew that I had just broken my arm. The pain alone told me that. I still had to get away from the building though, so I attempted to get up. I tried several times to get up, but I just couldn't pull myself up because my broken arm and banged up knees wouldn't allow it. I could feel someone approaching and I looked to where I thought they were; no one was there. It's then that I saw a figure standing to my right. I looked up, seeing a menacing grin on the creature's face and I was paralyzed with fear. It's face looked like a cross between a clown, and a dog. All it's teeth were razor sharp and had a muzzle, yet the rest of it looked human. It smelt of blood, sickness, and death. After staring down at me for several seconds, it pulled an axe from behind its back. It raised the axe above its head aiming it down at me. I knew I was dead. It brought down the axe, going straight towards my neck, preparing to sever my head. Just as I could feel the tip of the axe on my neck, I woke up. I was gasping for air, grabbing my neck and my arm, making sure they were alright. It all felt so real. I could barely move from the shock of the nightmare, during the day. I could still smell the smoke on myself, just the same as in the dream. Once I regained motor functions, I grabbed my phone, keys and wallet and ran out the front door, nearly knocking over my roommate. We never talked, so he didn't even ask any questions. Once outside, I decided it would be best to walk and clear my head. I began walking down a secluded path that not many people use when I passed a campus police officer. He looked at me curiously. As I walked past him he stopped me. "What's that smell on you son. It smells like smoke." He said. "Uhh no sir." I responded, wondering if I wasn't the only person who could smell the smoke. "It better not be kid, you know that the campus is 100% smoke free, including tobacco." He said pointedly. "Yes sir I understand." I replied, and he waved me off. After getting about 50 feet from the man, I checked myself over for any nicks or cuts, but there was nothing. "What the hell is going on?" I asked myself out loud. "Ahhhh I thought you'd never ask!" Said a homeless looking man who seemingly appeared out of thin air. "Right... Like you know anything about me." I replied, knowing this guy was a whack job. I started walking away when I heard him speak. I didn't turn around to listen "Just remember, we'll be watching. No one can stand the dreams forever." That comment caught my attention. I stopped and turned around. However, when I looked towards the place he was standing, there was nothing. "Holy shit! I'm nuts." I thought to myself. I decided to get a checkup the next day, Saturday, at the university health clinic. That's it for chapter 1.
