"Maybe Kirk or Bill knows something." Kyle suggested and Ryan immediately rang them from his cell phone, but neither had any idea where Mark could be. Within minutes Bill came running over to the 'Gardie' to keep Kyle and Ryan company. The hours seemed to stretch out. Finally a car pulled into the marina parking, with Mark in the back seat.
"Holy Shit!" Bill cried in disbelief, recognizing both the car and its occupants, "I can't believe this." All three by now were up on their feet looking ashore, not sure whether to feel relieved or angry.

Master and The Mate - by Deepdiver
CHAPTER 16 - A Tug of Love
Mark had the taxi take him to Bill's family home. As he approached the front door his stomach felt like it had a mass of caterpillars thrashing about. After the second ring a middle-aged woman answered the door.
"My word, what happened to you, young man? Do you need help?" She asked, truly concerned for the youngster standing before her, because of the wounds that Mark had sustained during the bashing.
"Yes, I do need help, that's why I came to see you - could I please come in and speak with you and your husband?" Mark asked nervously, feeling somewhat unsure of himself.
"Surely, please come in and have a seat, I'll fetch my husband." The woman went towards an open door and called down to the basement. "Richard, we have a guest, can you please come upstairs."
Richard came up the stairs mumbling to himself, wondering what kind of idiot would visit a decent family so early in the morning. When he saw the beaten boy awaiting him, his jaw fell open. Mark politely stood and extended his hand to both his hosts.
"My name's Mark Benning. You don't know me, but I do know your son."
"Our son no longer lives in this house." Bill's father said emphatically.
"I'm aware of that, Sir - that's what made me want to visit you. You see I've only just got out of hospital after being severely beaten by a group of my classmates. They beat me up because they thought I was a homosexual - I can assure you that I'm not. However, I want you to know that I am living with a homosexual couple."
"Oh shit!" Bill's father interrupted, "more of this gay crap."
"Sir, please hear me out. My parents were recently killed in a boating accident, and I was rescued by a middle-aged man. He saved my life and tried to save my parents and when I had nowhere to go, he took me in. He happens to be gay and lives with another beautiful man who has also been more than kind to me. Through them I have met your son and we have become very close friends. Please keep in mind that I am not homosexual and all three of these men have been very loving, helpful and respectful of me. I have spent several nights talking with your son for long periods because I couldn't sleep. He is a wonderful human being and he has helped me enormously to cope with the death of my parents."
"Oh my God," said Bill's mother as she began to weep.
"I am very sorry for what has happened to you, but as far as we are concerned, Bill is dead to us." His father asserted painfully. His wife covered her face as she heard this and began to sob harder.
Mark looked firmly at Bill's dad as he replied: "I lost my family. Your son has become the older brother that I never had. He and the couple I live with have become my new family. I had hoped that I could return something to Bill; he cannot bring my parents back from the dead, but I was thinking that if you could just see what hate has done to me, maybe you would realize that Bill needs your love and is miserable without it. Did you know that he'd attempted suicide after you rejected him?"
When Mark uttered that last sentence it was too much for Bill's Mom and she began to moan and cry very loudly.
"The same man that saved me, saved him, well he and his partner convinced him to not give up - that there was purpose to life. Please keep in mind that I am not gay. Can you imagine what its like to be born homosexual and taught your whole life that being gay is evil and perverted. Wouldn't you hide it and try to change? Suppose that you went through your adolescence trying to be what you aren't, but couldn't. When you finally realize that you can't change and get the courage to admit to yourself and your family what you really are, your reward is condemnation. Bill has tried to be the heterosexual son that you wanted; he really tried because he loves you both. Why is it so hard for you to accept him as he is? He is the same person you loved since he was born. If I were his parents, I would be proud to call him my son."
Mark had said what was on his mind and got up as if to leave.
"Wait! Don't go just yet, let me get you something to eat and check your bandages." Bill's mother said. His father just sat in his easy chair looking down, on the verge of tears, but not knowing what to say. Finally he looked up at Mark, looking him in the eyes.
"Where did such a young man like yourself learn to speak that way? At your age I was still a babbling idiot." Bill's father said, trying to compliment the young man.
"Well, a good bit rubbed off from my parents and the good education that they have provided me, but I am here more from what I have learned from Ryan and Kyle, the two men I live with, who are always helping others. I just want to be more like them. Not gay of course! If Bill could give me back my parents he would; I just hoped I could give him back his."
"Is Bill alright?" His dad asked and his mother stopped what she was doing to hear Mark's response.
"Physically Bill is fine, but he's been terribly depressed. He really needs your love and understanding."
"We can't bless a sinful and perverted life-style." Bill's dad retorted.
"I didn't mean that you have to condone his life-style, but surely you can love him as a person. He is the same person that lived with you for so many years." Mark responded.
They argued back and forth expressing objections and even outrage, but slowly Mark's personality and patience began wearing down Bill's Dad and his resistance slowly faded. "You know, if you did accept Bill, you would also be getting his younger brother who's straight!" Mark grinned as he tried another tack
Finally Bill's mother spoke: "Dear, this poor boy, who has been beaten severely has come by himself on a mission to reconcile us with Bill. It is not right that he leaves here without us willing to reconsider our position. How is it that he, a stranger, has come to love and appreciate our boy, and we who have loved him all these years are not able to accept him? It hurts me to think that I may never have grandchildren, but the only thing that I ever really wanted is for Bill to be happy."
"My kids are going to need grandparents some day and remember, Bill and I have become brothers, Can't you find room in your hearts for both of us?" Mark pleaded.
Now it was Bill's father's turn to cry. "I never wanted to send him away. I just thought this was some crazy rebellion or fad and that if I was firm he would come around. I never really wanted to lose him."
"Well, if it weren't for two queers risking their lives, Neither I nor Bill might have been alive today." Mark said. Bill's mother insisted on checking Mark's bandages, even those under his shirt; which he resisted.
She persisted though, "If you want me to be the grandmother of your children you had better act more like my son and get that shirt off you so that I can clean and dress your wounds." After breakfast, they allowed Mark to visit Bill's room which was as he'd left it. They found his photo album and sat together while Bill's mom explained each of the pictures from when he first came home from the hospital until around his eighteenth birthday.
As Mark told Bill's parents about his own mom and dad and the accident they also shared some of their fondest memories raising Bill. No one had an inkling of the time that had passed. Finally, Mark said he'd better be going and hoped that someday they would visit Bill and himself at the Marina.
"I think today would be a good day to visit. We can drive you back and you can show us the way." Bill's dad insisted.
When Bill's parents got out of the car, Bill remained frozen. He didn't know what to make of the situation. Ryan and Kyle were relieved to see that Mark was alright, but had no idea who the couple were that had brought him home.
Bill's mother held her arms outstretched towards her son. "Bill, Bill I love you!"
Bill leapt ashore and ran into his mother's arms. Tears ran down his cheeks as be began to comprehend that they had come to take him home. Bill's father stood watching his son embrace his wife.
"Got any of the hug left for me?" He finally said, and Bill opened his arms to include his dad.
Mark just said "Hi" to Ryan and Kyle as he began to head toward the galley to get something to serve their guests.
"Do you mind explaining to us where you were all day?" Ryan asked.
"Oh, sorry. I thought you would have guessed that I would be about my father's business." he said quoting the little bit of scripture he knew.
"Mark, we need to talk." Ryan said.
"Can it wait until after I introduce you to Bill's parents?"
"What?" said Kyle. "How the hell did you pull this one off?"
Bill brought his mother and father aboard the 'Gardie' and introduced everyone. Ryan offered Richard a beer and in spite of the stare his wife gave him, he accepted. Kyle thought, 'this guy is going to love my dad.' Mark served an iced tea to Mary (Bill's mom). Ryan and Kyle had been so worried about Mark's whereabouts, that they had not prepared anything for dinner. Ryan suggested they all go over to Dominic's.
"Great idea, his ganolies are dynamite!" Mark seconded the suggestion. Kyle wondered when he had fallen out of the loop.
"Kyle, why don't you invite your father to meet us there as well and we can make this one huge family reunion." Ryan said. Richard and Mary felt somewhat awkward being invited out for dinner but Ryan explained that Dominic's was a family restaurant and nothing fancy but great Sicilian cooking.
"What's the difference between Sicilian cooking and Italian?" Kyle asked.
"Sicilian pizza is square and thick and Italian pizza is round and flat!" Mark sassed Kyle.
"Actually, it's like the difference between southern and northern cooking in the states." Bill quipped.
At this, Bill's Mom intervened: "Oh stop teasing him boys! It has to do with the spices and they use more meat in northern Italy and more greens in Sicilian cuisine." She explained.
"Where did you learn that?" Richard asked looking blankly at his wife?
"It was on 'Emerrril Live.'" she responded and everyone laughed.
"Mark, can I see you in my cabin please?" Ryan said authoritatively.
Both Kyle and Ryan led Mark inside the yacht while Bill gave a tour of both the 'Mon Cheri' and the 'Gardie' to his parents. On their way over to the 'Mon Cheri' they passed Kirk working in the machine shop and Bill introduced him.
"You must be very proud of your son, he's a fine boy. I hope my kids group up to be just as responsible and friendly." Kirk said ignorant of the situation Between Bill and his parents.
"Thank you, Kirk. We are proud of our son and with a hardworking dad like yourself, I'm sure you will be just as proud of your kids, some day." Richard said sincerely.
Bill couldn't believe his ears and wondered what sort of pixie dust Mark had used to put this spell on his mom and dad.
Back in Ryan's cabin, Kyle was calling the police as Ryan began to explain the situation to Mark.
"The police were here looking for you; and what do you mean going off without any explanation? Didn't you think that we might worry about you?" Ryan said.
"Hello is Detective Dome there?" Kyle asked the Desk Sergeant who answered the phone.
"God, I only missed a couple of hours of class." Mark protested. "Aren't you guys over-reacting a bit?"
"No Mark, they were here to talk to you about your parents' death; the police suspect that it wasn't an accident. And we have been worried sick about you!"
"What? That can't be. Who would want to hurt my parents? There must be some mistake!" Mark said as he began to tremble.
"Detective Dome, Mark is back. He's just got home." Kyle informed Detective Dome.
"Mark the police were afraid you might be harmed and that got us all upset thinking that someone wanted to do you harm as well." Ryan said.
"I spoke to the detective just now. He's relieved that you're back home. He said he will be here tomorrow at 7 a.m. to see you. He'll drop you off at school after asking you a few questions." Kyle said.
"Are you OK with that Mark?" Ryan asked
"What does he want from me?" Mark questioned.
"We don't know, but perhaps you know something without realizing it that can help them. I'm sure he will have a series of questions and I hope you will just answer them to the best of your ability." Ryan added.
The three then went outside to the lower deck to await their guests. Ryan called Dominic on his cell phone to make reservations.
"Clare di Lunne." Dominic answered the call.
"Dom its Ryan I want to make reservations for dinner tonight."
"Wonderful. Its on the house!" Dominic said immediately and generously.
"Oh no, I have invited a group and its going to be on me." Ryan insisted.
"OK, OK you pay for your guests, but you and the boy, what's his name? Are my guests."
"You mean Mark?" Ryan interjected.
"Yes that's him, a nice kid, breaks my heart he is orphaned so young. So how many in your party?"
"Let me see. There's Bill and his parents, that's three, Myself, Kyle and Mark, that's 6, Kyle's Father, that's seven. Yep seven all together."
"Who is Kyle? Have I met him?" Dominic asked curiously.
"Kyle is a wonderful guy," Ryan said making eye contact with Kyle as he spoke. " I hope you will like him, he is my partner," then corrected himself and said, "he's my lover." Ryan said proudly.
"Ryan, if Kyle's your lover then he will be my guest as well, I will not accept anything less" Dominic replied forcefully.
"OK, if you're going to treat me, Kyle and Mark, then you must accept an invitation to bring your family out on my yacht to go on a fishing trip with us." Ryan negotiated.
"Ah, that sounds nice. But you know ... Italian families can be rather large." Dominic warned.
"Well, maybe we can arrange it in small groups, as we can only take a limited number at a time. But you're all welcome." Ryan insisted.
"You got a deal, but only if I get to cook what we catch!" Dominic played with his good friend. "You know I will never forget that it was you who saved my son's marriage, and now I have two grandsons thanks to you!" Dominic said gratefully.
"Stop that, you don't owe me anything. We will be there about 5 o'clock." Ryan stated.
"OK, let me get off the phone to start preparing a special meal - I'll choose what you eat tonight!" Dominic said, excited that his good friend was reviving their long friendship after so many months with no word. Dominic was overjoyed.
