CHAPTER 3
I headed over to pick Chad up to go to the truck dealer and order my new trucks. On the way Chad said
This isn't the car you had yesterday.
So I related yesterday afternoon's events to him and he couldn't believe my shitty luck. I said it turned out sort of good I made a couple new friends during the ordeal.
Then I asked Chad if I could tell him something that might affect our friendship.
He said what you're going to tell me that you're gay.
Well I almost wrecked my car.
He said that he and Jenny knew as well as a few people in the office figured it out. But I always did my job and didn't ask for anything special so they could care less.
I said great I thought you folks were understanding but I didn't think you were this understanding.
He sort of smiled and said they figured it out when the mess with Jason and that bitch went down.
I said I doubt if you even know all that happened with them.
He said oh really.
I said yeah and started telling him the whole story. When I was finished Chad said.
I don't blame you for leaving and going to a different job.
I told him that was a big part of it but the biggest part was just what I told Jenny. I got bored with what I was doing.
I told him that's why I am so close with Pattie because she went through it with me. And that Jason had always said no woman would come between him and his friends but the bitch did anyway. I also told him I tried to make peace with her but everything I said she just twisted it around and told Jason her side as she wanted to tell it.
Chad asked when the last time I heard from him was.
I said almost a year ago. And it's all over what happened at Christmas and Their wedding. I said but you know that part of the story.
He said yeah that was pretty shitty.
We got to the truck dealership and I informed the salesman that I wanted One truck for pleasure and the other for a work truck and I would also need him to order a trailer for me also. I saw his eyes light up and the wheels in his head must have been spinning like a slot machine with all dollar signs on the wheels.
First I said I want a new T-800 with a 295" wheelbase and the 76" studio sleeper on it. Also I wanted a 600HP CAT engine with a Jake brake and Retarder 18 speed transmission Hydraulic wet kit for the trailer 20,000lb Steering axle with wide floats 46,000lb rears with axle lock and 4:11 gears 20,000lb lift axle All aluminum wheels inside and out And all Michelin tires The strongest single frame they make Dual 150 gallon fuel tanks Extra-long slide 5th wheel with air slide and air release Dual air ride seats Custom stereo with XM radio installed at the factory Satellite TV antenna that's self-aligning And all the normal bells and whistles that would be on a normal owner operator truck.
Second and this one is for pleasure and I want it licensed as a motor home.
He said I don't know if we can do that.
I said find a way I know there are loopholes in the law and this is for private non-commercial use.
He said ok start with this one.
Ok I said.
I said this one will also be a T-800 with 390" wheelbase cab and chassis.
He said what do you mean.
I said a custom built sleeper will be on it.
He said ok.
A 550HP CAT with Jake, Allison automatic 40,000lb drive axles 3:70 ratio 14,000lb steer axle 150 gallon aluminum fuel tanks All aluminum wheels with Michelin tires And as before the same bells and whistles as the other truck As well as an air release 5th wheel also
He said now what about this trailer.
I said I want a new Trail King TK110HDG lowboy 3 axle air ride with a flip. Swing out outriggers. Also I want a 20 ton hydraulic winch mounted in front of the first axle. Also all aluminum wheels and of course Michelin tires. I guess you realize this is what the wet kit is for. Oh and by the way I want 10 D-rings on each side and 4" drop side with an 18" deck height. Oh and both truck and trailer will have air scales factory installed.
He said you want scales on the cab and chassis too.
I said no won't need them.
He asked if I wanted to finance them or what.
I said I'm paying cash.
I thought he was going to pass out.
It was then Chad spoke up and told him that I have more than enough money for all this.
The salesman offered us something to drink and said he was going to the computer to order the trucks and get me an idea of the price.
When he left Chad said what did you need me for?
I said I was hoping you would say something if I ordered something that wouldn't work together.
He said oh I think both will work, you just won't be able to get in tight places with them.
I told him I wasn't worried about that. I was only going to use the one for traveling and the other for my own equipment and do a few runs a year.
He said then it shouldn't be much of a problem then.
The salesman came back and said he checked with the factory and the cab and chassis will require special frame rails and will be a little more expensive than he thought.
I said how much more. He handed me a fax from the factory it said the frame rails would have to be special made and would be an added cost of 6000.00 to the normal price.
I said that's acceptable. So what is the final price?
Well the complete truck with the sleeper will be 127.000
I said I'm not stupid I'll give you 95,000 and that's it. He didn't like it but took the offer.
I asked what's the price on the other truck.
He said with the 6000.00 extra for the frame that it came in at 89,000 because of no sleeper.
I said make it 80,000 and you got a deal.
He said we can do that. Then he added I have a call in to Trail King and should be hearing from them in a few minutes but I won't be able to do any dealing on their price because that is the price to us.
About that time the secretary came in and handed him a fax, I could see the TK logo on it. He looked it over and whistled.
He said you know what they want for that trailer?
I said might as well tell me.
He handed me the fax and the final price was 62.000.
I told him that I expected about that much and maybe a little more. They are damn good trailers.
He said I hope they are for that price. He then said we will need a deposit of at least 20% because all this is special order.
I said no problem and pulled out my checkbook and asked if $100,000 is enough of a deposit.
He said Chad I like this guy already.
And I wrote the check.
He then asked by the way we never agreed on the color of these trucks.
I said I want that new Lavender Purple that's out right now.
He grinned and said those would be some really sharp trucks.
I just said yeah. And we shook hands and were on our way.
Since it was close to dinner time and I know Chad needed to eat I asked if he wanted to stop and get some dinner since it would take an hour to get back.
He said sure I'll just call Jenny and tell her.
While he was on the phone to Jenny my phone rang it was the realtor and she said she had good news that she might have found a place.
I said hold on a sec.
I asked Chad if he wanted to look at some property this afternoon and he said ok.
I told the realtor lady that we could meet her in about two hours.
She said that was fine and gave me the directions.
We had lunch and then headed towards the property the realtor found. When we got there I was impressed. 172 acres most of it woods. It had a stream running through it and an old rundown house that wouldn't make a good training fire for a fire department.
I asked what's the deal on this place.
She told me it was an estate sale and the heirs just wanted to get rid of the place to quit paying the taxes.
I asked what they were asking for it.
She said $530,000
I said offer them $500,000 and if they take it, I want to close within the week as soon as the title search and everything was done.
She called them and told the people the offer and they took it.
I told her to get to work on the paperwork and I'd see her later.
On the way to take Chad back he said that place was a steal at that price even if I gave them the 530 for it.
I said I know.
And made a quick call to the mobile home dealer and told him to get his contractor up there and take a look and see what they could do about getting started on the work.
He said they would be there tomorrow.
I said I would meet him there just give me a time.
