Chapter 18
You would think that being a guy, getting ready for a wedding wouldn't be too crazy. Well, you're wrong. We started the morning with a champagne brunch in the suite. Then it was time to go to the spa. My whole body was cleansed and exfoliated with Sea Salts and essential oils of geranium, rosemary, thyme, cypress and mint. And then I soaked in a bath with eucalyptus, ginger and peppermint aromatherapy oils. I finished the treatment with a warm stone and deep tissue massage. I felt so relaxed afterwards. I met my friends back in the hotel suite to get ready. We had hired a stylist to do hair and make-up for my female friends, and to touch up my hair, and just make sure that we all looked our best.
Strangely enough I felt no nervousness. I was as cool as an iceberg. Today was going to be perfect. I had my best friends and my family with me as I marry the love of my life. Even though Lance and I had decided against best men, we had each chosen someone to hold the rings that we would be exchanging. We had gotten matching bands of simple white gold. It was so hard for me to decide between my friends, I am close to each and every one of them. Each person has a special place in my heart. In the end I chose to have Craig hold Lance's ring. It only seemed fair. Even though he and I don't have the best relationship, I am closer to his wife than I am to him, it seemed important to include him in my life this way.
It was thirty minutes until the service was supposed to start. I was starting to get a little antsy; I couldn't wait until I would be able to see Lance. Tribora tried calming me down, but nothing was working. I missed being able to see Lance, and was a little pissed that we were being kept away from each other. I understand tradition and all, but I'm not a traditional person. I just wanted to be with my man. My friends were all doing their best to keep me occupied, but I was having none of that. Aimee came into the suite to let Terrence know that everyone had arrived, including the J.P. and that Lance was just as antsy as I was. She suggested that we just start early. I was all for it, and was practically out the door when Terrence stopped me.
"HR, I know you're anxious, but there is no need to run. You don't want to be all sweaty and gross smelling when you go to Lance."
"Okay, okay. I'll slow down."
"How about we walk down together?" he asked.
"That would make me very happy."
Terrence kissed my forehead and took my hand. We, along with the rest of my crew, walked down to the elevator and took it to the lobby.
We made our way to the outdoor gazebo at the hotel. Yes, I realize that it is February, but Lance and I just loved the idea of getting married looking out at the water. We had made a few modifications, including adding sides to half of the gazebo, and heaters. It was actually quite warm, and Bruce was so impressed by the atmosphere it created that he decided to add this as an option for his hotel wedding package.
"I am so proud of you," Terrence said.
"Why?"
"You took a chance, and now look at where you are. Two months ago you were freaking out about meeting your online friend James, and now you are marrying your soul mate."
"Aww, Terrence you are going to make me cry," I started to tear.
"No crying now," he wiped the tear from beneath my eye and kissed my cheek. "I'm going to go take my seat. I'll see you later at the party. I love you little bro."
"Love you too Terrence."
I stood off to the side. Our wedding consultant came over to me and showed me to my position. We had three aisles. I would walk down the left one while Lance walked down the right at the same time, after the ceremony we would walk down the middle one together. I peaked over to the other aisle and saw that Lance was also ready. The violinist started playing Cannon in D, and Lance and I started walking down, finally meeting each other in front of the Justice of the Peace.
Lance took my hand in his as the J.P. started the service.
"Good afternoon, and welcome to the ceremony that will unite James Lance Bass and HeathRiley Steven Lindsay in marriage. We gather here today to celebrate their union, and to honor their commitment to not just gazing at one another, but to looking outward together in the same direction. Today James and HeathRiley proclaim their love to the world, and we rejoice with and for them." He paused.
"In marriage, we give ourselves freely and generously into the hands of the one we love, and in doing so, each of us received the love and trust of the other as our most precious gift. But even as two people who are in love share that gift, it also touches the friends and family members who in various ways support and contribute to the relationship. All of you are James and HeathRiley's community, and each of you has played some part in bringing them to this moment. This is why gathering, as a community is such an important part of a wedding ceremony. Because James and HeathRiley are now taking a new form as a married couple, and in this form, they become part of their community in a new way."
James and HeathRiley, we are here to remember and rejoice with you and to recount with one another that it is love that guides us on our path, and to celebrate as you begin this journey together. It is in this spirit that you have come here today to exchange these vows. James." He motioned for James to begin. We had chosen our own vows.
Lance turned to me and took both my hands in his.
"HeathRiley, I am proud to take you as my husband. We have developed the kind of love and understanding that is only shared when there is true love. You have helped me triumph over challenges presented. Encouraged my personal growth and boosted my self-esteem. You have helped me become the person I am today, and with your help I will be a better person tomorrow than I was yesterday. I love the way you love and care for me. I love the way you trust and believe in me. I love you and I love my life with you. Today as we begin our lives as husbands I commit myself to you."
Lance was tearing and I was starting to cry. His words were just so beautiful.
"Now we will hear from HeathRiley," the J.P. said. "James you are my best friend and my one true love. When I'm with you, I feel I can be the person I want to be, and I cannot imagine my life without you. You make me smile, you take care of me and you are always interested in what I have to say and do. Today, I want to make a promise to you and to myself, in front of our friends and family, to love and honor, protect and respect you for the rest of my life. I vow to trust and value your opinions, and stand by your actions. I pledge to always treat you as my best friend, and equal. I will ask for help when I need it, and offer help when necessary. Let us be friends and lovers, and grow old together. And let us make all the years of our lives together be the best years of our lives. For now and forever." The J.P. continued, "For thousands of years loves have exchanged rings as a token of their vows. These simple bands are not of great value, but are made precious by our wearing of them. Your rings say that even in your uniqueness you have chosen to be bound together. Let these rings also be a sign that love has substance as well as soul, a present as well as a past, and that, despite its occasional sorrows, love is a circle of happiness, wonder, and delight. James, take HeathRiley's ring and put it on his finger, and repeat after me: Just as this circle is without end, my love for you is eternal. Just as it is made of indestructible substance, my commitment to you will never fail. With this ring, I take you to be my trusted confidante and partner for life."
Joey handed my ring to Lance, and as he repeated the words, he placed the ring on my finger.
"HeathRiley, take James' ring and put it on his finger, and repeat after me: Just as this circle is without end, my love for you is eternal. Just as it is made of indestructible substance, my commitment to you will never fail. With this ring, I take you to be my trusted confidante and partner for life."
Craig gave me Lance's ring and I repeated those same wonderful words as I put the ring on his finger.
"James and HeathRiley, although I'm officiating here today, it is not truly in my power to sanctify, legitimize or bless your relationship in any way, because the two of you have already done that in your hearts. So, by joining hands right now and looking into each other's eyes, let it be known that you are joined, body and soul in this lifetime, and that this bond is sacred and eternal. And now that you have stood before me and exchanged these rings and these vows, and have agreed to be married according to the laws of the state of Massachusetts, it gives me great pleasure to pronounce you as Husbands. You may kiss your love."
Lance and I shared a tender kiss, to a symphony of applause. We turned and saw our friends and family sharing in our joy. We walked down the middle aisle, and when we reached the end were met by out wedding coordinator. She took us to a small room off to the side for formal pictures.
"Jamie. I love you so much. Thank you for today," I said before I kissed him.
"Oh, Ry, I feel the same way. Can we skip the party and go make love?"
"Not a chance in hell. Everyone would kill us. Now let's get our pictures done, so we can get the family ones done, and then move the process along."
The photographer took all the formal shots that we wanted. My favorite was the one where we tried to squeeze everyone in. Just taking the pictures took up the entire cocktail hour and then some. Afterwards, everyone else went into the ballroom so that we could be announced and make our entrance.
Lance and I were just outside the door when we heard the DJ say. "We now welcome Mr. Lance and Mr. Heath Bass-Lindsay."
The doors opened and Lance and I walked into the room. Everyone was clapping. We stopped and kissed gently. The DJ then started up the music for our first dance.
Lance and I walked to the dance floor. The first chords of I Knew I Loved You by Savage Garden were playing. We started to dance.
"They look absolutely beautiful together," Fran said to Aimee.
"They do. I am so happy that HR found his soul mate," Aimee replied as the song came to an end.
"I'd like to invite everyone to the dance floor," the DJ said.
"Aimee, sweetheart, would you dance with me?" Craig asked.
"I'd love to."
Most of the couples got up on the dance floor, and those who didn't softly chatted at their tables.
When that dance was over, the DJ invited the guests who had chosen to give speeches or toasts to do so at that time. The first one was Joey.
"It was almost a year and a half ago when my best friend came to me, and told me he had met a new friend on the internet. Honestly, I was scared for him. We all hear the horror stories, but Lance was convinced that this guy was completely safe but he was being cautious nonetheless. Over the next ten months their friendship developed into something deeper, and for Lance HR became a stabilizing factor in his life. It was very important for Lance to be able to meet his friend, so he convinced the rest of the group to add a week to our tour and add three concerts. At first I thought he was insane, but now I see how wonderful it was for the group to be here in the beginning. We got to see firsthand two wonderful men fall in love. Heath has become a part of the 'NSYNC family, and we became a part of his. To the happy couple." Joey raised his glass.
The rest of the guests replied, "to the happy couple," and we all took a sip of our champagne.
Tribora then got up and spoke, "I have known HR for almost five years now. In that time he and I have become close friends and I can safely say that I know all of his dirty secrets, because there are only three, and one of them is because of me." Everyone laughed. "HR is the type of guy who is always genuinely surprised when something wonderful happens in his life. The most wonderful so far has been falling in love with Lance. I'll never forget the day when he found out that his online pal got a huge group of rooms booked at the hotel, helping Terrence make group and HR make rooms budget for the month." Terrence blushed a deep red. "HR was so scared. He was afraid of meeting the best thing that has ever happened to him. And the day that Lance arrived at the hotel, well we just won't go there. All I can say is that I believe in destiny, because of you guys. You were destined to be together. Thank you for sharing with us your love. To HR and Lance."
"To HR and Lance."
The wedding reception was a lively affair that everyone had fun at. The older kids entertained the younger ones, and the adults spent most of their time dancing. We all enjoyed our meals, and everyone laughed when Lance and I cut the cake.
After a few hours, Lance and I decided that we had waited long enough and said our goodbyes. We had a different suite booked in the hotel than either of the rooms the previous night, this was a three-bedroom suite with a Jacuzzi on the balcony. We were walking down the hallway to the room.
"So how did last night go?" I asked.
"The guys and I had a good time. We watched a bunch of movies and ate a lot of junk food. How about you?"
"Pretty much the same. I got some gifts though."
"Me too. What did you get?"
"Tribora made this gorgeous scrapbook and an afghan that is totally going on our bed at home, it matches the new colors we chose for the room. Terrence got me bunch of cookbooks. Abbey and Heidi got me a whole trousseau of sexy underwear and Mike got us a very large box of sex toys, and accessories. How bout you?"
"Well I can't wait to see what you got, but I got similar stuff. The sexy underwear came from JC, and the sex accessories came from Joey. Justin and Chris had a collection of collages made with pictures of us from birth to now. They have commissioned one more for pictures from last night and today."
"That is so amazing. It's so nice to see how much our friends love us."
"Very true, now lets go search Mike and Joey's presents and see what we can use tonight."
We made it to our suite. I had made sure that everything we could possibly need would already be there. I had chosen one of the new outfits that I had gotten the night before, black on black silk boxers with the matching robe, to change into for the night. The box of toys was also there, and I had the bed in the master bedroom covered in white rose petals.
"I'm going to change out of my tux. I suggest you do the same. I'll meet you back in the living room after I am ready," I said as I walked towards one bedroom, Lance made his way to another bedroom.
I took off my tux, and hung it up in the closet. I then went into the bathroom and took a quick shower. I didn't want to be all sweaty and gross when Lance and I made love the first time since we've been married. I spritzed myself with Lance's favorite scent, Acqua di Gio by Armani. I brushed my teeth, and blew dry my hair. I put on the silk boxers and the robe; they felt so good against my skin. I was going to go back to the living room, when I suddenly became very shy. I was afraid to go out there. I had just married the man of my dreams, and I was afraid to see him. Well, not so much see him, but be with him. Now I know logically that we haven't physically changed since yesterday, but I feel that there is an emotional change. But it is one for the better. We pledged our love to each other in front of friends and family, and we have a piece of paper to make it legal. I was nervous. I felt like a virgin bride, now that is something I never thought I would say. I had to pump myself up, I just thought about what Terrence or Tribora would say to me in this situation. They would tell me that I was acting silly. . .
"Ry, are you coming out anytime soon?" Lance called through the door.
"I'll be there in a second Jamie."
Where was I? Oh yeah, silly. I was being silly. Why was I having an internal conflict when I could be out there making love with my husband? God, I am such an idiot.
"Ready or not, here I come," I called out.
"Ry I am more than ready for both of us to cum."
Giggling, I walked into the main room of the suite and there he was, my angel, in a matching set to what I was wearing, except his was in a green that almost matched his eyes.
"Wow you look amazing," I said.
"You too Ry, you too."
