Michael Andrews and Me By Peps
Chapter 1 - Whirlwind
I never really though of what it feels like to step out of our little town of Terral. Come to think of it, I never really set my foot out of Oklahoma. Living with my grandfather who is as proud as he can be of our blood as one of the direct blood line of the chief of the last Kiowans. It was very hard for me to cope up with just being me. It's not that I'm not proud of who I am, it's just that I would like to have myself a little "normal" teenaged experience myself. I just graduated from High School and am not really planning on going to college. Grammy have always thought I should go but I can't seem to force my self into considering it. Gramps on the other hand is all about following the will of the spirits of the wind.
"Yeah, right." I said softly as I got up my bed.
My name is Samuel Angeni Roundtree, that is what my gramps told me but I learned that my legal name is Samuel Angeni Batterson. My dad left my mom when he learned that she was pregnant. My mom died when I was born so, well I guess you know the rest. Yep, I'm gay, I always have been. That's why my classmates always evaded me. See, my grandparents loved me when I opened up to them. Grammy always thought that I was gay and had convinced my Gramps to accept the fact that I was. According to him, it's not that he didn't accept the thought, he just wanted to be there when I will bring them great-grandkids, but that idea might not come to be real. I love the outdoors, being raised on the outskirts of a woodland, I was used to the movement of the environment and loved feeling the gentle breeze. My Grammy used to tell me that I was a great dancer and a good singer as well. I loved the arts, and it's because of the arts that I was again bullied by most my classmates. In order to defend myself, I worked out and true enough, like what I watch on Nat Geo, if a deer's anthlers are bigger than the other, the other would back off.
Growing up I really never had real friends. Just the occational groupmates when we are on a group assignment, but today I will change that. I was really hoping that my Gramps meant what he said that they'd be okay here when I leave for a while to check out what is in store for me outside. I need to... I wanted to... I know this day would come so I took a bath and prepared myself to face my Grammy. "Sigh.. Here goes.."
I took my bag with me and walked out of my room. The aroma of freshly baked apple pie is enough for me to miss my grandparents already but I had to be tough.
"Good Morning Grammy..." I greeted her as I gave her a kiss on the cheek. Something tells me that she already knew as her eyes were glistening.
"G'morning sweetheart. Sit and have your breakfast now, I'm calling your Gramps."
"No need to dear, I'm already here." My grandfather sat down beside me with a coffee in his hand.
"Do you really need to go Sam?" My grandmother can't help it.
"Yeah Grammy, I need to. It's my dream and I really want to start off fresh myself."
"I knew this day would come but it's too fast. It seems only yesterday when..." She was now sobbing beside my grandfather.
"Now, now dear... Sam's a big guy now, he can handle himself." Then he turned to me. "Just so you know son, we are always here for you. You get me? We love you so much and we want you to choose your path the way we should all choose our paths."
Now I was the one in tears. "Thanks gramps. I know and will apply what you and Grammy always taught me. Be calm as the lake and when I need to, be immovable as a mountain. Above all, listen to my heart and I will understand. Jeesh, I sound like grandmother Willow again."
The three of us laughed and shared our wonderful breakfast, enjoying the last breakfast before I set free and try my luck in working.
As I got in my truck, and looked at the rear-view mirror, the image of my grandparents became smaller and smaller and then it hit me. I'm now on my own. No one to be with and no idea what to do next.
"Next stop..." I checked my map. I knew I was headed south."Uhmmmm... Austin!"
My grammy always told me I had my side always with the spirits. I tend to be more attached to them but I had no idea what she really meant by that. Maybe it's my spontaneous decisions but I really wouldn't know.
So there I was, 19 years old, trying to chase a dream which actually is a shadow in my mind. Without a clue as to where I'm headed for.
After what felt like an eternity in my car, I was pulling over a diner. "I made it!" I told my self. "Thanks mom!"
I have this habit of always talking to my mom whenever I'm afraid or unsure. My gramps told me that my mom is ususally with me whenever I needed her to be. I guess I grew up knowing that my mom was watching over me.
I entered a small and a very cozy diner with the sign, Mama's Best on the front. I had a seat and was surprized as a waiter dropped the menu on my table.
"What the Heck was that!" I quickly lowered my voice as I noticed some heads turned.
"Ooops, my bad dude I was just..." He stopped in mid sentence.
I was a little pissed but learned to control my self. I am really good at that. "It's fine, no harm done, next time...."I fell silent as I lifted my gaze and met a pair of emerald eyes. He was there, standing with his mouth open and staring at me. I felt really conscious as I was really messed up from travelling.
"I-I was just... Sorry for that." He said breaking our eye contact.
"uhmm.. yeah, no problem.. I was just... well... i-it's okay dude." I said. Why am I stuttering?
"Thanks. Well, what are we having?"
"I-I'd have the Super Burger with fries and a hot fudge sundae please." I was looking intently at the menu.
"Great anything else?"
"That would be all.."
"Excellent, my name is Michael, holler if you need anything else." He said that in a flash and left. His mood changed from stunned to snobbish in an instant.
"What's wrong with that guy?" I sighed as he left. What's wrong with me? I thought as I recalled the incident a minute ago. I can't seem to take my eyes off him. His hair was spiked, a well chisled face and he looks a lot like Orlando Bloom. Only cuter. Here I go again. Becoming all wierd and thinking too much about a guy I just saw. But this one's different. There was something in him.
My order came with Michael being all grumpy and stuff. Seriously? I searched my Iphone for some local inns where I could stay and spend the night and tomorrow I will set out and look for an apartment where I can settle and start from scratch. I was so excited.
See, my grandparents are well-off, but you can't really see it by just looking at us. My Gramps owns several hectars of land enclosing a lake that pretty much is a favorite spot for summercamps and other events. My Grammy on the other hand owns one of the biggest marts in Terral. Growing up, my grandparents taught me that money is not important. That's why my grandparents never left the old cottage that was inherrited from my gramp's great grandfather.
I called Michael and asked for the tip. He was still in his 'grumpy' mood and it was really getting on my nerves. When he went back with the bill I checked it and it was $3.50. I gave him a five and told him to keep the change.
"Thanks." He said and was now a bit un-grumpier.
"Is everything okay dude? I mean were you pissed at me a while ago?"
"N-no! No! Oh God, no. I- I was just... having a bad day is all." Michael said as he scratched the back of his head. He was so cute doing that by the way.
"Oh... my bad. Don't worry, everything will be fine from now on." I gave him a smile and immediately felt like a dick for saying so. From now on? What are you a genie???
He smiled at me as I turned and walked out to my car. I headed to the nearest inn and was ready to call it a night. I was happy with what I did back at the diner, exhillerated but happy.
(Michael's POV)
I was really having a bad day as Tommy was really being an as lately. We would always fight and I would end up crying... again.
Well, My name is Michael Andrews. I'm 22 years old and it's almost a year now since my dad threw me out because I told them I was gay. Tommy is my boyfriend for 3 months now. Everything started well until I caught him cheating on my one time..... the second time... the third time and now... the fourth time. Why I put up with it? Because Tommy is who I have left. I know it's masochistic but hey... You can't blame me.
"Be thankful I chose you." I read Tommy's text and was really pissed now.
I dropped the menu in front of the customer out of my anger and was too late when I noticed.
"Ooops, my bad dude I was just..." There he was, sitting there looking at the menu. When he looked at me, his face changed from pissed to... well, Don't really know... stunned maybe?
He's like a Native warrior model fresh from a magazine. Brown eyes, dark hair he had braided. He looks... well, he looks like an angel. Then I caught myself.
I have a boyfriend... I do love Tommy... but what on earth am I feeling right now? I quickly got his order and felt like I should stop myself from whatever it is that I am feeling right now. I peeked from the kitchen window and saw my angel checking his Iphone. I thought to myself, someone like him must have someone already. I can't help being jealous of who she or he is.
When he called me and asked for his check. He had a look of hurt in his eyes when he noticed that I still was being grumpy. I gave him the bill and gave me a full $5 and told me to keep the change. I thanked him and that was the time he asked me if there was something he did. I apologized and said that I was just having a rough day.
"Oh... my bad. Don't worry, everything will be fine from now on."Then he smiled. Oh my God I could just die now. He's really cute. But the feeling left as soon as he turned away and went for the door.
"There he goes..." I sighed. It's back to my normal routine and a night of misery with Tommy. Why wouldn't he just settle for me? I was about to throw the bill away when I saw something written at the back.
"You should smile a lot... it looks so much better on you... Sam" He wrote it! He wrote this message to me! With his phone number on it!
I quickly tucked the note in my pocket and will deal with this tonight. Nevertheless, I had a smile on my face for the rest of my shift.
5 hours later...
I closed the door and saw that the TV was running with Tommy lounged on the couch with his usual bottles of beer. He's passed out and was snoring. I gave him a kiss on the forehead and patted him on the shoulder.
"What the fuck!" He exclaimed as he opened his eyes.
"Well my bad, I was just trying to give you a kiss!" I said as my emotions welled up. When will this stop?
"Kiss my ass you fucking bastard!" He said obviously drunk.
"Get your ass to bed! You're drunk again!" I turned away from him ignoring his snorts and took my phone out to charge it.
"What's this?" Tommy squatted picking up the piece of paper that fell off my pants. Oh! Shit!
"Give it back Tommy.."
"You whore!" He said as he threw a punch at me. I fell on the floor with my lip hurting. I can taste blood on it. "You call yourself loyal and then you go exchanging notes with bitches like you! Fuck you! I don't need you at all! Randy's way better than you!" He kicked me on my side as I cried in pain.
Tommy turned to the room and after a few minutes. He came out with his bags. "You know what bitch? I'm actually done with you! You're no use to me now. Good luck finding that so called love!" He went for the door not before spitting on me.
I just laid there, wanting to die. Ever since I've always tried pleasing people. My Dad. My mom. My brothers... but over and over again I fall down and they throw me out or walk out on me. I was never good. I am never good. I'll always be mediocre. Nothing special. A good for nothing waiter...
(Sam's POV)
I looked up at the ceiling with Michael's face in my mind. I can't help it but everytime I close my eyes I see his face. The emerald eyes that is really deep with mixed emotions in them. I saw his pain... his sorrow... but that moment when he looked at me. It's like both of us can die happy.
I checked my Iphone and it was already 2AM. Cat's "Memories" was playing... One of my favorites... as I placed the phone down beside the desk, it beeped. I opened it...
"Sam? This is Michael.."It was a text from my prince. My drowziness was all of a sudden replaced with excitement. I dialed his number and waited for him to pick up.
"Uhmmm... H-Hello?" Michael's voice was shaking and it sounded funny.
"Hey... ahh.. is this Michael?"
"Yeah.. Hey Sam. I was just checking out the number you gave and.. well you didn't have to uhmmm call..."
"No.. It's fine, I was having a hard time sleeping... your timing's great. How are you Mikey?"
"Mikey?"
"Uhmm... well... haha.. yeah, I just thought Mikey's cute.." What?? What are you saying Sam!
"Ohh.. haha..well thanks.. you're cute.. I mean.. uhmm Sam's cute too.."
"Is there something wrong dude.. You sound a funny..." I had to ask since I was really concerned and didn't feel right.
"Uhmmm.. Sam... I really don't have anyone to tell and it's consuming me." He hesitated for a while and then. "M-my lip's split... and I'm having trouble breathing."
"What? why? What's wrong? Is there someone with you? Do you want me to come over?"
"Well... uhmm.. my partner kinda saw your note.. and.. uhmm.. He found the reason to leave."
"Oh fuck... It's all my fault.. I'm sorry Michael.. I... " I was lost for words.
"Sam.. I can assure you this is not your fault. He's been looking for a reason to leave me. You just did me a favor giving him an escaperope." He assured but I was still feeling guilty.
"Do.. do you want me to come over?"
"Are you sure... Sam.. I'm really sorry.. I.. I just don't know what else to do.. I can't get you off my head and... shit this is so frustrating."
"I know what you mean. I can feel it to... I'll be right over." I changed and hopped in my car with Michael giving me the directions. Maybe I was really starting to get crazy as I was willing to go to a stranger's house at 2AM with no clue as to what his house looked like.
With the right direction, I was able to spot the apartment building of Michael. I knocked on his door and there he was... my angel looking so heartbroken. He was crying and sure, his lip was cut. It looked like it just stopped bleeding. The side of his mouth was purplish.
"Ahw.. Mikey what did he do to you?" I went in and he closed the door behind us. His apartment was a mess, but I assumed that this was because of his jerk-of-a-boyfriend. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm a little okay now." He said. We both were just standing there not sure what to do. "Uhm... I- ah.... have a seat first Sam. Would you like some drink?"
"No, I'm okay. However, you don't look okay Mikey... where's uhmmm.. where's your boyfriend?"
"He left... for good. It actually lifted a burden you know. Him leaving." He shook a bit as he said this and I automatically got up and went to his side and put my arm around his waist.
"Whoa... You sure you're okay? You must be really tired. You should go to bed."
"What about you? I-... I don't know what's gotten into me inviting you over... It's past 3 and you should be sleeping."
"Don't worry about me. You need to sleep. You are tired. Come on I'll bring you to your room." We went to his room and it smelled like a mixture of smoke and liquor. Michael coughed as we entered.
"Would you like to sleep at the inn instead?"
"No, I wouldn't be more burden than I already am now."
"Non-sense... Let's go there. Do you have a bag that we can just pack?" I asked. I helped him pack up some of his things for the night as I was in no way, sleeping in this apartment.
After fifteen minutes we were riding back to the inn. We settled back into my room which had a king sized bed. I let Michael shower and get comftable. After showering I helped him get to bed as he was now really feeling sore.
"We'll go to the hospital tomorrow and get those bruises checked okay?"
"I-I can't afford..." I pressed a finger the unbruised part of his lip to hush him.
"Don't worry. I'm here for you now." I said as I looked deep into his eyes. Tears were now again flowing from his eyes. "Michael, I don't know who you are, what you went through, what is troubling you now, but all I can say is that I am here for you and I won't let you be afraid again. Believe it or not for the past hours you have meant so much to me and I can't help myself. Heck I can't even explain it."
"H-hold me please? If it's only for tonight then I'm all for it. Just please make everything go away." Michael cried. I too was tearing up as I can feel all the pain that is inside him. How can someone so divine, be this much hurt.
We laid down spooning in bed with me holding him. He cried as he told me everything about him. As he opened up his heart to mine I just fell deep in the openness that he was giving me... and I was so willing. I told him all about me too... and we went on and on and on and occationally, making him giggle a bit with some of my jokes. Soon we were both caught by the long day that we had and we were sleeping peacefully but not before my angel whisphered to me. "Thank you so much Sammy..."
I smiled and whisphered groggily."Don't mention it Mikey... I think I love you....."
I woke up at around 11 in the morning. Feeling Michael's body next to mine I can say that he is still sleeping. I kissed his neck and he squirmed a bit and turned to face me. He smiled and looked deep into me again. How does he do that? Make me feel all good inside.
"Good morning Angel.." He said as he hid his mouth under the pillow he was holding.
"Angel? As far as I know you are the angel between the two of us."
"Thanks for taking me over Sam. It really meant a lot."
"It did for me too. I meant what I said last night Michael... I really am falling for you."
"How can you still like me..." I pressed down on the pillow to silence his doubt. I took the pillow of his mouth and leaned in slowly, not breaking eye contact with him. I then, closed my eyes and felt his soft lips touch mine. It was like electric sparks went through my sistem and I was breathing fast now. I pulled back a bit and saw Michael with a dazed look.
"Wow." He said softly."That was amazing... I never felt that before... You are amazing Sam... The first time I saw you... I was actually grumpy because I had a boyfriend and thought that life is unfair cause I really don't want to be untrue to Tommy cause I still hoped... but then... You're here... kissing me... I still think I'm dreaming."
I leaned in again and kissed him softly. "I don't care about anything at the moment. All I care about is you.... and that damn sweet lips." I gently kissed him again.
"Owwww.." He pulled back touching his lips.
"Ahh. Sorry Mikey... I got carried away." I apologized, remembering that we must go to the hospital to have him checked.
We went off after having separate showers, and got into a diner and had a quick brunch. Michael making a call to his boss and telling him that he needs to go to the hospital. His boss was really understanding and let him have a few days off. Turns out, his boss already knows that Michael is Tommy's personal punching bag and this has happened before which made Tommy the least person I wanted to get to know.
As we set off for the Hospital, we passed a nice looking building with the sign, Rosemont Theatre. I asked Michael if that theatre was active.
"Yeah! That's the local pride here in Austin, Rosemont Theatre. Sadly though Simon, the one resposible for the great shows there just died. But I hear it's not shutting down. In fact. They do have a lot of shows lined up for the year."
"That's good. Maybe I can send an application there."
"Well I do hope you get to join the cast." Michael said and then he looked out the window again and sighed.
"You really don't need to worry much Mikey... I really do love you."
"Yeah... It's just hard to accept.... I actually am falling in love with you too." He said as we pulled over the hospital.
