Where we left off...
"Scott, I know we can't legally marry or even acknowledge our relationship right now. But someday, I would like nothing more than to legally become your partner...your husband." I released one of his hands and reached behind my back, returning with a small jewel box.
I looked at Scott's face and could see the joy, behind the tears trickling down his cheeks. I knew he was happy with my promise. We both were.
I opened the box and took out the simple gold band. I took Scott's left hand in my right and slid the ring on to his ring finger. "Scott, this ring is a promise that our futures, will be one future. A future filled with love and joy, together," I whispered.
Both of us were crying then. Scott pulled me into his arms and hugged me tightly, covering my face with tiny kisses as he whispered his love to me. Many minutes later we calmed down and relaxed in each other's embrace. Scott popped the cork on the champagne so we could toast to our love and watch the fireworks light up the skies over Orlando. Both of us were happier than we'd ever been before.
Chapter 33
I lurched through the door ahead of Scott as we entered the hotel suite.
"Damn, I'm tired," I muttered as I flopped onto one of the couches. Scott sat down beside me and leaned against my side. I couldn't believe we made it through the concert. All of us were completely exhausted.
Our US tour was just over a week old but already we were fatigued. In ten days we had done seven concerts and innumerable radio and TV interviews. I knew the label was trying to milk us for all the publicity they could and had crammed the schedule full.
"Hey Kev, have you heard anything about the changes to the schedule?" I asked, not even looking over at my cousin.
As soon as we had seen the schedule, we had contacted management and insisted on changes. If we had to maintain the pace of the previous few days we would never make it through the entire tour. The 'PTBs' reluctantly agreed but said it would take a couple of weeks and in the meantime, the schedule was to be followed. I was really starting to dislike record labels.
I heard Nick turn the TV on, but was too tired to look over. I knew Howie and AJ were on the other couch, while Kev and Nick sat in the chairs.
"Yeah, Jeff called," Kevin finally said. "They should have the new schedule to us some time tomorrow. He said they cut some appearances and interviews. Any concerts that tickets hadn't gone on sale for were also scrapped." Kevin sighed. "I don't know how much..."
"Oh Shit!" Nick's exclamation interrupted Kevin.
I looked over to see what Nick was watching. I froze. "Damn!" I heard Scott swear softly beside me as he realized what Nick was watching too. MTV was showing the Paris press conference. I couldn't believe it. That thing had given me nightmares almost. And now the country was watching it, hearing the questions that were asked and the answers we'd given. I was sure everyone would know what I was hiding. The others had all turned their attention to the TV too. None of us had seen the conference since it happened, but there was no mistaking it. Nick increased the volume slightly as we all sat quietly and watched.
"I can't believe MTV would show it!" Nick said softly.
"Of course they would! It's good publicity for them, especially if people start talking about some of the questions," AJ said bitterly.
I couldn't take my eyes from the screen as I relived that nightmare. I blinked back a sudden surge of tears. Scott reached over and pulled me to him, holding me close. "Forget about it Love!" he whispered. "It's old news. No one will care," he said softly.
He was wrong. "I care," I murmured.
I sat for a couple of more minutes before I couldn't take anymore. Without saying a word I stood up and walked to Scott's and my bedroom. I felt dirty almost and walked directly to the shower. I quickly stripped off my clothes and steeped under the warm water. It was like every time things started to go well for Scott and I, something would happen. Now that thousands of people in the country had seen the conference the paranoia I'd had over in France, and Asia came back. I didn't want to be worried about behaving inappropriately with Scott. He was my love and I wished I could show that to everyone.
I heard the glass shower door open. I didn't need to turn around to know that it was Scott. I simply stepped back until I encountered his solid body. I wiggled around until I could feel his hot flesh from my head, down to my heels. Scott wrapped his arms around my stomach as he rested his chin on my shoulder. I crossed my arms over his and sighed deeply.
"Why can't things go right for us Angel?" I murmured softly.
I felt Scott smile against my shoulder. "I don't know Love." He turned his head to kiss my ear. "But this feels pretty right, right now," he whispered.
I giggled softly. "It does, doesn't it?" I said.
I turned around in his embrace and put my arms around his neck. As we gazed into each other's eyes, our exhaustion disappeared, to be replaced by need and desire. At that moment, more than anything I wanted to make love with my Angel. I smiled seductively and suddenly jumped up, wrapping my legs around his waist. I could feel Scott's engorged manhood rubbing against my ass cheeks as my own erect member was trapped between our stomachs. I leaned forward and our lips met. Our passion erupted; suddenly I couldn't get enough of him. Scott stepped forward until my back was against the wall of the shower. Scott's hands were driving me crazy, squeezing my ass. At the same time he used hid lips and tongue to draw moans of approval from me.
I worked my hands all over Scott's back, shoulders and head, rubbing and pinching gently. I nipped at his ear. "I want you," I whispered huskily.
Scott turned, pushed the shower door open with his foot, and carried me to the bedroom. Both of us were dripping wet but it didn't matter. Scott knelt on the bed, lowering me to the mattress before stretching his lithe body out on top of me. He rested on his elbows either side of my head and gazed down at me. I could only stare up longingly at Scott's emerald eyes and damp black curls. Scott bent hid fingers to run the backs of them up my cheeks, before twining his fingers into my hair.
I couldn't resist and began to thrust my hips up against Scott. I wanted him to continue. Finally, I lowered his head and I tasted his lips with my own, relishing in the taste that was pure Scott. I moaned softly and all of our earlier exhaustion and troubles were forgotten.
I woke up very early the next morning, snuggled against my Angel. I didn't want to get up, but the memories of the night before, that damn Paris thing, prevented me from returning to oblivion. Not wanting to disturb Scott, I climbed carefully out of the bed and pulled on some clothes before silently walking out to the lounge. Not surprisingly Kevin was already up. He was on the phone ordering some coffee and tea for everyone. I glanced at the clock and realized it would be a while before any of the others saw daylight.
Kevin hung up the phone. "Morning B," he greeted me. "Why are you up so early?"
I sighed. "Too much on my mind," I replied. "I didn't want to wake Scott," I added.
Kevin stared at me intently and nodded. "MTV?"
My turn to nod. "Yeah. I can't stop thinking about it," I told him honestly.
"Well, wait till the coffee gets here and we'll talk about it, okay? I'm just going to print out the new schedule. Jeff emailed it to me over night, so once everyone is up, we can discuss it."
I nodded in agreement and flopped down onto one of the couches while Kevin walked back to his room. I thought about how I had reacted when we were touring around Asia. It had taken Nick to point out what I was doing. I didn't want that to happen again. I certainly didn't want Scott to feel neglected. I sighed. Everything would be easier if I was out. But I didn't want to put the other guys in the position of having to defend me. As long as Scott and I were together, there was no reason to change.
A knock at the door forced me out of my thoughts. I let room service wheel the cart in and tipped the man. I poured myself a coffee and wandered out to the balcony. Ever since the Eiffel Tower heights weren't nearly as bad as they had been. Not that I like being 20 stories up, but I could live with it.
A couple of minutes later Kevin walked out, coffee in hand.
"So, what's bothering you Bri?" he asked as he leaned against the railing.
I stared out at the horizon, wishing we were facing the sunrise. "Remember how I was in Asia?" I asked quietly. Kevin nodded. "I'm afraid I'm going to do that again. I don't want to, but I'm so afraid of someone figuring out that Scott and I are together."
Kevin turned to look at me. "Do you remember the fight you and Scott had last Thanksgiving?" he asked suddenly. I thought about it. That had been our first disagreement. I nodded. "You told me that both of you agreed to take all reasonable precautions, but if that failed, so be it. I guess the question is, how do you define reasonable, and how does Scott."
I thought about that. I remembered the discussion well, up in the study at my family's home.
"Brian," Kevin said gently, "There is no reason why you shouldn't go out with the rest of us, just because Scott is there. You know we'll watch out for both of you. All you need to do is watch how you interact. Try not to touch him all the time, or stand beside him." Kevin paused. "Definitely try to refrain from kissing him. That's a sure give away," he said with a grin.
I smiled. "Thanks Kevin. I think I'll try that." I decided to go back inside. As I opened the door, I could see Scott sitting on the couch reading the newspaper.
Scott glanced up as I sat beside him. "Morning Angel," I said softly, leaning over to kiss him lightly.
"Hey there," he said with a smile. "Everything okay?" he asked quietly, watching me intently for any reaction.
I smiled weakly and shrugged. "As good as can be expected I guess," I replied. I didn't want to go into all the details. I was going to try and take Kevin's advice. Scott wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me against him.
I relaxed against him as he continued to read the paper. Kevin soon joined us, after grabbing another cup of coffee. A few minutes later Howie appeared.
"Morning guys," he greeted us as he poured himself some tea.
"Hey D," Kevin said.
"So what's the plan for today?" Howie asked as he sat down with his tea.
"I thought you guys were going to tour the city today, or something like that," Kevin said.
"That's what Nick and AJ want to do," I said.
"It sounds like fun," Scott added. "I've heard so much about this place but I've never been before."
"I'm up for it," Kevin said. "What about you guys?" he asked, talking to Howie and I.
"Sure. We've been here before, but its always interesting to wander around," I replied, deciding today was a good day to see how things went.
"Okay! I'll order breakfast," Kevin said as he walked over to the phone. "Do we want to wake the two sleeping beauties or just wait till their up?"
"Why don't we get ready and have breakfast first. If they aren't up by then, we'll wake them," Howie suggested. Kevin nodded and dialed room service.
Scott turned his attention to me.
"I'm happy you agreed to come with us love," he said softly.
I smiled at him, happy I'd made the right choice. "I'm not going to let MTV stop me from going out!" I declared. I pushed myself to my feet. "Lets go shower and get dressed Angel," I said, pulling Scott up. Holding his hand tightly, I pulled him to the bedroom.
We decided to just shower this morning. Of course, my idea of just showering left Scott with a slight problem once I finished washing his entire body with my bare hands. Scott reciprocated, leaving me in a similar state. We helped each other to a quick relief before returning to the bedroom.
As Scott walked over to his suitcase to grab some clothes, I sat on the bed.
"Scott?" I said quietly.
He turned to look at me. "What's wrong, Bri?" he asked gently.
I decided to just say everything at once. "I just want you to know that I love you. I want to go out today, but we have to be extra careful in public. So if I stand away from you, or don't talk to you all the time, I want you to know I'm not trying to be hurtful. I just don't want anyone starting to gossip."
Scott sighed and walked over, squatting between my legs. "Bri, I know you love me. I think you are worrying more than you need to. I've been hanging around with all of the guys since the tour began. No one has made an issue of it. Lets just go and enjoy the day. Try not to dwell on it, okay?" he pleaded.
I leaned forward and kissed his nose making him giggle. "Okay," I agreed.
We finished dressing and returned to the lounge. Breakfast was already there and Nick, surprisingly enough, was also up. He was sitting at the table eating breakfast and playing on his laptop. Scott and I got our food and sat down.
"Hey B, Scott?" Nick suddenly spoke.
I glanced over at him and he was looking at us thoughtfully. "When was the last time you guys heard from Nora?" he asked us.
Scott usually did the emails. I wasn't terribly fond of computers so I let him take care of it. Scott looked at me and I shrugged. I had no idea really. Scott would let me know when someone emailed me. Scott looked back to Nick. "Not sure Nick. It's been a few weeks I guess. Why?" he asked.
Nick frowned slightly. "We had been talking very regularly, but this past week I haven't heard from her at all. She hasn't been on-line that I know of, or sent me any email. Just wondered if you had heard from her at all," he explained.
"Nope, sorry Nick. If we do hear, I'll let you know," Scott promised.
"Thanks."
I smiled slightly thinking about Nora. I knew Nick was fond of her; she was a sweet girl.
AJ finally dragged himself out of the bedroom to join us. Since everyone was up, Kevin handed out the revised schedule that had been emailed to him overnight. Scott looked at my copy. It didn't free up much more time for us, but it was definitely better than the original. We discussed it briefly, giving Kevin our opinions so he could relay to management.
An hour later we left the hotel with Marcus and another security man, Paul, accompanying us. Despite the occasional encounter with excited fans, the day was mostly fan free. No one was feeling overly ambitious so we walked leisurely around the Quarter stopping for a light lunch in the afternoon.
I tried to remember what Kevin had suggested. I remained distant from Scott, never standing beside him. I tried to act like he was a stranger so I wouldn't go over to him and put my arm around his shoulders, or grab his hand to point out something I saw. As the day wore on I noticed Scott became quieter. I wanted to go talk to him, but refrained, deciding to wait until we were back at the hotel.
We debated about eating dinner out or ordering at the hotel. After a brief discussion, we decided on the hotel. We were still tired from the crammed schedule and at the hotel we could just relax as ourselves, instead of worrying about public image.
Scott was extremely quiet as we rode the elevator up to the suite. He ignored everyone. I wasn't sure what was wrong, but had a feeling I was responsible. Once the doors opened Scott simply walked over to our bedroom. I began to follow.
"Brian!" Kevin whispered harshly.
I stopped and turned to find my cousin and Nick glaring at me. I heard the bedroom door close. Howie and AJ went to their rooms leaving the three of us alone.
"What the hell are you thinking?" Nick asked incredulously.
I stared at him. "What do you mean?" I asked.
"Damn it Brian. I said don't ALWAYS stand beside him or talk to him," Kevin said angrily. "I sure didn't say completely ignore him."
"Brian, you treated him like he wasn't even there," Nick added. "Every time he looked at you, you looked away. How do you think he felt?"
Oh God! Had I really been that cruel? I was just trying to be careful, that's all. I felt tears well up as I thought about how hurt Scott must be feeling.
"Brian, I don't know what to tell you," Kevin said in exasperation. "You really need to figure out what you want because I sure wouldn't take that kind of treatment from someone who says they love me," he said bluntly.
I looked at him in shock. "I do love him!" I almost shouted.
Kevin sighed and walked over to me. "I know you do Brian. But saying it isn't always enough. And your actions haven't been saying it at all," he said softly. He pulled me into a hug and Nick walked over to join us.
"I just don't want you to lose him, B," Kevin said.
"I don't either," I whispered.
Nick pulled me back. He turned and pushed me gently towards my room. "Go talk to Scott, B. He'll forgive you."
I walked into our room and heard the shower. I stripped off my clothes and walked into the bathroom.
I opened the shower door. "May I join you?" I asked quietly.
Scott turned to look at me. I could see the sadness in his eyes and hated that I put it there. He held out his hand to me and I almost ran the few steps to him.
I put my arms around his waist and pressed my body against his. "Am I ever going to get this right?" I murmured. I pressed my face tightly against his shoulder. I couldn't stop my body from trembling. Scott held me tightly.
"Its okay Love," he whispered. I couldn't believe he'd already forgiven me.
I pulled my head back. Fresh tears were dripping down my face. "No its not!" I said forcefully.
Scott wiped my tears. "Okay. Lets get out of here and talk," he suggested.
I nodded, so Scott turned off the water. We both dried ourselves quickly and wrapped the towels around our waists. Back in the bedroom, we both pulled on a fresh pair of boxers and a t-shirt.
Scott sat down on the bed, leaning against the headboard. I sat down cross-legged, facing him. "I don't know what to say Angel," I said softly when I finally spoke. "I love you so much, but I keep doing stupid things to hurt you. Kevin and Nick both ripped into me out in the lounge. And I deserved it. I'm sorry I hurt you. I just get so paranoid about protecting everything, that I lose focus on what is important. I know you weren't doing anything more than trying to carry on a normal conversation between friends and I completely ignored you."
Scott reached out and grabbed me, pulling me on top of him. "Brian my Love, I love you, but I was really hurt today. I know you didn't mean to do it. I don't know if you've even thought about this, but by completely ignoring me in public, maybe you're making it more obvious that we are involved." I looked up at Scott in confusion. What was he saying? "None of the other guys are afraid to goof around with me, pushing, pats on the back, messing up the hair. Only you. If someone was watching the six of us interact in public, they would notice and maybe start to wonder why we don't like each other. That could easily lead to questions. Does that make sense?" he asked gently.
I was quite for a minute as I thought about what he said. It made perfect sense. I sighed. "I never even thought of that Angel," I admitted. I rolled to my side and Scott slid down so we were face to face. I reached out and picked up his left hand, bringing it up between us. I ran my thumb over the simple gold band I'd put on his finger. "I gave this to you as a promise Scott. I'm still learning how all this works and sometimes I'm going to screw up. But as long as you have this ring, you have my love, completely," I said intently.
I raised my eyes to his and Scott smiled. "And you have my love too!" We hugged tightly and lay quietly in each other's embrace.
A knock at the door brought us out of our own little world.
"Come in!" I called.
Kevin opened the door and stepped in. "Everything okay?" he asked hesitantly.
Scott nodded. "Everything is fine, Kevin. Thank you!"
He smiled. "Good. I find it difficult to stay angry at my cousin," he admitted.
Scott laughed. "Me too!" he agreed. I blushed.
"We've ordered dinner. Do you two want to join us, or eat in here?" he asked.
Scott and I looked at each other. I nodded slightly in Kevin's direction and cocked an eyebrow. Scott nodded his agreement.
"We'll join you guys," I said.
"Okay. It should be here in about five minutes," Kevin said before turning back to the door.
"Thanks Kev," I said before Kevin closed the door.
Scott and I put on a few more clothes and walked out to the lounge. The guys saw our clasped hands and grinned. The problems from earlier were forgotten.
The tour picked up at a slightly less hectic pace the next day. Scott and I spent the next couple of off-days together at the hotel. It was relaxing and very enjoyable.
About a week after leaving New Orleans the tour pulled into Denver. We were sitting in the bus lounge talking. Nick was back on his laptop checking his email.
"Nick!" Scott suddenly said loudly and jumped up to go to him. I quickly noticed how pale Nick was and followed Scott to Nick.
The others, hearing Scott's near shout, came quickly. As soon as I was beside him, Nick turned to me and began to cry. Scott and I looked at each other in confusion as I put my arms around my friend. Scott turned the computer towards him and read the message that had upset Nick.
Scott paled too and began to tell us what was wrong. The email was from Nora's friend Kristi. Two weeks earlier, Nora had been walking home from one of her night classes. Two men had jumped her, beating her badly and raping her. An image of Nora smiling shyly at me in the airport immediately came to mind. Scott continued to relay the information. She had been unconscious and just recently came to. Nora had asked Kristi to email a few of her closer email friends to let them know why she hadn't been in touch.
I was shocked, and continued to comfort Nick. The others were no less stunned. We all stood silently as Nick's tears slowly subsided. He pulled away from me and looked at all of us.
"How could anyone do that to another person?" he asked sadly. "God, she's such a sweet, generous girl." We all agreed. "I want to do something nice for her," Nick declared. The rest of us liked that idea.
We discussed it for the rest of the morning and into the afternoon rehearsal. Nick really wanted to fly back to Orlando to visit her, but the schedule just didn't allow it.
Finally Scott had an idea. "Guys! Don't you have someone tape almost every concert?" he asked us after rehearsal.
"Yeah we do," I said.
"Why don't you tape tonight's concert. Pick a song you want to sing for her and before it starts, give a little dedication. You can send the tape to her. I know she'd love that," I suggested.
"That's a good idea. But I can make it even better," Nick said enthusiastically. We looked at him. "Well, the five of us in the group can't go back to Orlando, but Scott could go. Don't you think it would be more meaningful to deliver it personally?" Nick looked at Scott, waiting for his reaction.
As much as I didn't like the idea of being without Scott for any time, Nick made a good point. Scott pulled me aside. "What do you think Love?" he asked me softly.
I smiled at him. "I'll miss you, but I think it's a good idea. Nora deserves it," I said.
Scott grinned. "That's what I was thinking too."
Scott told the others he would do it, and Kevin called management to get a flight arranged for him.
The concert that night was one of our best. About halfway through, we stopped the music and asked for everyone's attention.
Nick spoke. "Thank you Denver. The boys and I just found out today, that a dear friend of ours was attacked a couple of weeks ago by two cowards. She was walking home from night class when she was attacked. We want to send her our love and best wishes. Nora, you have been a true friend in the time we have known you. This song is for you."
Nick made it through his little speech without crying and I was proud of him. I knew he was more upset than he was letting on. The song began and we started to move. We had decided on The One, for Nora.
After the concert, we waited around for the video crew to finish with the tape. It would be a rough tape, without flashy fade-ins or camera changes, but Nora would still love it. Once Scott had the tape in hand, we all went to the airport. We stayed in the limo while Scott proceeded to his gate and boarded the flight.
We were quiet during the ride back to the hotel. Each of us thinking about what Nora had suffered. I couldn't even imagine the pain and fear she must have experienced. I really hoped our little gift helped to cheer her up.
Nick and I stayed up for a little while talking about Nora. He told me some of things they talked about. He admitted that if his life were more stable, he would have considered asking her about a serious relationship. But he didn't want to tie her down while she was enjoying college and being young.
I was a little surprised at how mature Nick had become. He had really thought about what a long distance relationship would require, and recognized that he wasn't ready for it.
The next day we relaxed at the hotel. I wasn't sure what to do with myself so after wandering around the suite, driving everyone else crazy, I finally decided to down to the hotel's gym. I started with a light aerobic routine before moving on to some free weights. I wasn't as dedicated as Kevin and Howie were with the weights, but it got my mind off Nora and Scott.
"So you and AJ are an item huh?" an annoying voice suddenly interrupted my thoughts. I glanced up to find Ray standing there.
"Ray," I greeted him, purposely ignoring his comment.
He walked over to the mirror and bar along the wall and began to stretch. "I must admit Brian, it made me laugh when I heard that reporter ask that question." Ray continued to talk and I tried to ignore him. "AJ did a good job covering it up. But I could tell you were worried. How did Scott react to you and AJ almost being outed?" He laughed. "Then that question about someone being a fairy. I rolled on the floor laughing. It was so obvious that you were panicking. AJ was looking a little pale too. I'm surprised no one has asked questions about Scott always being around. Anyone can see that you two have the hots for each other."
I tried to ignore him, but finally I couldn't. I really wanted to punch his gloating face, but knew that wouldn't help. Besides the fact that he was bigger and stronger than I was, I knew it would just make him rub it in more. I promised myself that he would not be included on our next tour. I set the weights down, picked up my towel and walked towards the door.
"Ya know Brian, any time Scott gets tired of hiding, I'll still be here. I certainly don't have a problem with quickies in the dressing room or the bathroom," he added.
I walked out the door and quickly took the elevator back up to the suite. As I showered and changed, I tried to forget what Ray said. I knew he was just trying to create problems between Scott and I. But I couldn't completely ignore his words. Had it been that obvious that I was worried at the press conference? Was it obvious to people that I was in love with Scott?
The concert that night was not my best. I know I screwed up a few times. I also caught Ray leering at me, breaking my concentration. I was relieved when we made it to the bus. We were driving overnight to Salt Lake City and Scott was going to meet us there. I couldn't wait to see him again.
To be continued....something is coming.....;-)
