A Sad Song 2

Chapter Three

I am Brian, these are my fist.

_

Everyone clapped as we stepped of stage. The owner of the club kept asking when we could be back. I went to the table where everyone was sitting. Jenny handed me a cup of water as Jason and Brady embraced.

I noticed that Tyler was headed our way. I took a long swig from the cup and headed the opposite direction. "Where are we going?" Jenny asked.

"We are going somewhere that is not here," I said.

When I walked outside I noticed Ryan was waiting by the door. I put on a stone face and I walked by him heading towards my car. "Piece of shit," I heard him say under his breath.

"What did you just say?" I asked.

"Leave it alone," Jenny said. "Come on we could go to my house."

She was right we should have gone somewhere else but when Ryan opened his mouth once more, calling me piece of shit again I found that my fists were clenching and my blood was curdling. That's why my fists connected with his face not once but twice.

"We can go now," I said, pulling Jenny away with me.

"Stop!" Brady yelled as I felt someone's hand grab my hair and slam my head into a wall. My vision blurred and I felt myself falling. There was yelling and I think I was bleeding but as the world came back into focus Brian was replaced with something else. Something cold that I couldn't control.

One, Two Three times my fist connected with Ryan's face before Tim pulled me away. "Let me go or I'll hit you too," I yelled. He didn't so I tried to push away as Tyler picked up Ryan. "Who's the piece of shit now," I yelled.

"I can't believe you would do this," my father said as my mother cleaned up the cut on my forehead.

"He deserved it," was all I could say.

"That's besides the point Brian. Even if he did deserve the beating of his life you shouldn't have been the one to give it to him. What if he presses charges. You need to control your anger Brian. Tim told me that you even threatened him."

"I didn't mean to. I was too angry to know what I was saying," I said.

"Brian you are grounded until further notice," my mother said. "Give me your car keys and go apologize to your brother, and Brian this isn't over. I want you to apologize to that boy."

I looked at her in disbelief. Even my father looked at her like she was crazy. "First thing tomorrow morning you are to go to the Shaw's and apologize to Ryan."

"Dad?" I said.

"Sharon don't you think that you are being a bit harsh. I think him being grounded is enough," My father asked.

"No not this time Brian. You have to control your anger. I think that you should see an anger therapist," she said.

"I wont do it," I said.

"You will or you wont get your car back and you can kiss your band mates goodbye until your old enough to leave this house, Brian," she said. "I'm putting my foot down." That hit a sore spot.

Joseph stared at the Brady through the glass window in the teachers lounge. He watched as the boy intently listened to his teacher and began writing. "God he looks, so good," Joseph thought to himself.

"We need to figure out how were going to get the new books in time for summer school. The funding hasn't come in and we don't have enough in our budget to play with," Steve said using his cell phone. Joseph gave the man a look. Steve was the Joseph's only obstacle. He knew Steve was a do-gooder by nature but if he threatened anyone close to him Joseph would regret it. So he had to find a way to take him out of the equation.

"That would be great (get Brian's fathers name.)," said Steve giving Josephs the thumbs up. "I'll have my secretary contact you and -- Thanks again."

"I see that things are progressing," Joseph said.

"It's not what I expected but Brian's father is going to try to help us with some funding," Steve said. "Look I'm sorry we can't give you a desk right now but as soon as space is available I'll make sure you have one." Steve said still beaming from the news.

"Oh this will due," Joseph said. "Like I we agreed I'm not going to teach just supervise and help where ever I can."

"And I'm glad that you are here," Steve said patting the man on the back. "While were here I want you to look over the current curriculum." You are free to look around in the storage areas. I believe we still have some of your old stuff in there. Brady has a key just ask him to unlock the rooms for you. Joseph feigned interest and smiled when He realized how easy it would be to get Brady alone.

I looked up at the house then back at my mother who was determined to teach me a lesson. "Go!" she yelled. I had to keep reminding myself that I was only doing this so I could get my car back at the end of the week.

I pressed the door bell and a minute later pastor Shaw opened the door. I expect that you are here to apologize," he said with a grin. "I always knew you were a good boy."

I followed the pastor into what used to be a familiar house. I noticed that there were some new pictures along the stair wall. One of them was of Steve and Pastor Shaw standing next to each other. They looked like a couple, a happy one at that. I wondered if they ever let themselves go any further.

"Are you coming?" the pastor asked breaking my thoughts.

"Yeah, I was just looking at the pictures," I said.

Pastor Shaw led me to the kitchen. To my surprise there wasn't any one there. "Where are they?"

"They went to set up some things for me," he said. "Look don't tell anyone but I'm sort of glad you hit that little pest. He is such a frustrating little." He stopped before saying something he would regret.

"I didn't hate him until he called me a piece of," I stopped my self before I repeated what Ryan had called me. "I don't know I just snapped."

"Unfortunately us old people don't have that luxury," we laughed together.

"But what am I going to tell my mother? She'll make me find them to apologize. I'm only doing this so I can hang out with my friends and so I can get my car back."

"I'll tell your mom that you apologized to him if you can do me a favor and promise me that you won't fight with that boy again. It's not worth it."

I smiled. I couldn't believe that a pastor had let me get away with what I did. I couldn't believe that he was happy I did it. "I promise I'll try but in my defense I was doing a very good job at avoiding those too."

"Alright I can live with that now we have to talk about your anger management. I agree with your mother on this, but I also agree that it should be your choice." He said as he handed me a card. "Call Mr. Peterson tomorrow he said he could meet you if you want. Now go your mother is waiting."

I smiled and put the card in my back pocket. "Thanks," I said. And I walked out. My mother smiled as I approached the car and waved at pastor Shaw who waved back.

"See it wasn't that bad," my mother said, hugging me. "I bet you feel better huh?" I nodded and prayed that I didn't burst out laughing.

Brady leaned into his boyfriend, Jason as they watched television in Jason's home. Across the room officer Grant noticed the interaction the boys shared. He feared a lot for his son but was thankful that his son was happy. He liked Brady but he knew where the boy had come from and he was scared that Brady`s back ground could corrupt his sons future. He tried to not let it show but he was very concerned.

But how could he not like someone who made his son happy. In his eyes Jason deserved the best and in some way he knew Brady was one of those things. Sure he still was not comfortable with the idea that his son was gay, but he couldn't change that fact and he loved his son nonetheless.

"How about some pizza for dinner guys," Officer Grant asked, picking up the cordless phone.

The boys nodded and ten minutes later they were sharing a pepperoni pie. "So guys what's new in your world?" Officer grant asked before taking a bite of a slice.

"Can I ask you something?" Brady asked.

"What's that, Brady?" Said officer Grant.

"Do you guys do investigations on people?" Brady asked. "Like background checks?"

"Yeah why do you ask?"

"Because, well we have a new teacher at the school. Steve says that he is his friend and normally I wouldn't think twice about it but Brian thinks that there is something off about him."

"We don't normally do background checks unless we have a legitimate reason to," said officer Grant. "Has this man done some thing he shouldn't have?"

"Well no but Brian is usually really perceptive when it comes to people and this wouldn't be the first time his instincts were right?" said Brady. "He's never wrong."

"It's true dad. Brian can tell when people are lying even if they are really good at it. I can't explain it," Jason added as he took a bite.

"Well what's this guys name?" officer grant asked.

"His name is Joseph Bean," Brady said.

"I'll look into it," said Officer grant as the wheels in his head started to spin.

My anger made it's return that night when I was ambushed by Tyler. He walked into my room and waited for me as I got out of the shower. "Get out?" I said.

"Brian I'm not leaving until you talk to me," he said.

"Then you'll be waiting for a long time," I said.

I threw on a shirt and put on my pajama pants underneath my towel. I was trying very hard to keep my anger under control. I walked over to my bed and I put myself under the covers. "Can you shut the lights off please," I said. He looked at me and then did what I asked. But he got into bed with me after he did it.

I laid there with my eyes open as my anger was reaching it's peak. I turned towards him. "Get out now before I beat the shit out of you," I said.

He looked at me defeated and for some reason I cared. I let out a sigh as he stepped out of my bed and sat on the desk chair. "Alright lets talk but you have to promise me that you will leave me alone after this," I said.

"I promise but you have to promise to stay calm. I don't want to fight with you," he said as I wondered when I became the one to fear.

"What?" I asked.

"You get angry Brian," he said. "I don't want you to blow up on me."

"I need to tell you something because I need to get it off my chest. The night before you came home Drew and I we kissed." he shifted uncomfortably. The look on his face told me that he didn't like what I had said. Then again I really didn't care what he liked. He looked at me for a while then shifted his gaze to the ground.

"Wait you did the same thing and you're mad at me?" he asked, standing from my chair.

"No!" I yelled. "I did not do what you did. Unlike you I felt guilty for just kissing Drew. I spent that whole night wondering how you would take it, wondering if you were going to break up with me. Do you know how many people I said no to because I thought that you were coming back to me. I waited for you. Even when I knew I liked Drew I expected that you and I would be together when you came back."

"So did I. Don't you think I feel bad about doing this to you? I care for you Brian."

"Then why'd you do it?" I asked. "Why didn't you break up with me first?"

"I wanted to tell you Brian," Tyler said. "It kind of happened. I met him one day and we started to hang out. The next thing I knew we seemed to gravitate towards each other. Then we both wanted more. I almost told you so many times, but I was dealing with a lot over there. My grandmother doesn't know that I'm gay. So I had to tell her that you were just a friend."

He walked back to the computer seat. "I wasn't even able to mention my mother in front of her. She let me look through her old things but I wasn't even able to bring back anything for Jenny," he said. "Then when I met Ryan it was like I was free. He was there for me when I missed you."

"You could have called me. I was always here for you," I said. "you could have told me all of this Tyler. More importantly Tyler you didn't have to stay there."

"I have to go back. I have to stay over there until I turn eighteen so I can receive the inheritance my grandfather left for us," he said.

"You stayed away from me for money?" I asked.

"No Brian it's not like that. That money can help the Church and the Shaw school so Steve doesn't have to beg for funding year after year. It's enough to keep the school afloat for the next ten years."

Somewhere deep inside I knew his motives were good but I couldn't see past his new boyfriend Ryan. I walked back to my bed. We sat in silence for a few minutes both of us afraid to speak as everything had been said. He stood up and was about to say good bye but something in me couldn't let him go.

"Wait," I said. "look I guess I could have been better to talk to but I can't look over the fact that you cheated on me. That hurts Tyler and that means you and I can never be together again but we can at least be civil. I'm not going to say friends because I can't say that yet oh and your boyfriend he had it coming."

"He said you called him a piece of shit," Tyler said.

"No Tyler I was happily content ignoring the both of you but when I walked by him with Jenny that night he was the one that called me a piece of shit. I was going to let it slide but he called me that again," I said.

Tyler looked confused for a moment. "He said you called him that."

"Look you can believe what you want to believe. I'm not sorry that I hit him especially since he took a cheap shot by slamming my head into the wall," I said. "I'm over all of it Tyler but I'm glad you and I talked."

"Brian I, I'm sorry this is all my fault," he couldn't have told a better truth and I wasn't about to let him forget it but what's done was done. We were together once but we were never going to be together again. I would only see him a handful of times after that day. As somebody once said, I can forgive but I can't forget.

I waited by my car for Drew. I was taking him out for dinner. It wasn't a date but deep down I wished it was. I was nervous, I mean he made me nervous. Yet I admired so much of who he was. He had made through when everything was getting from bad to worst.

That night he told me everything he had gone through when he was living with his father. "What are you doing here?" he asked.

"I wanted to take you out for dinner," I said.

"Really where we going?" he asked.

"Where ever you want," I said and he smiled.

"I know a place," he said.

He gave me directions as I drove out of Lakeside into Maybury and then into the next town. I wanted to hold his hand and I wanted to grab his face and connect it to mine. Drew had me going crazy. All I could think about was him.

"You see that diner on the right? Pull over there and park in the back," drew said and I couldn't help but smile. "What?" he asked.

"Nothing?" I said and giggled as we left the car.

"My cousin works here," he said as we stepped into the diner. "You'll love the food."

And I did love the food. We sat on the far end of the counter and he ate before his cousin brought us both big mugs filled with hot cocoa. We thanked her and she returned to her other diners. Drew looked at me then asked, "How come you're in a good mood?"

"I don't know maybe I'm feeling really good right now," I said.

He smiled and shook his head. "You know what I feel good too," he said and took a big gulp of his cocoa. "Ahh that's hot," he said, fanning his tongue with his hand.

"Careful," I told him. "I want to be able to kiss you some day."

He blushed at what I said as I almost shrunk from embarrassment. Where did that come from? I mean I found myself being extremely forward considering that he and I weren't even dating yet. I knew I liked him from the first time I met him a year earlier. I thought that Tyler was coming back and that kept me away from him. I felt like Julian Grace all of a sudden. He was extremely forward with me even though he was supposed to be straight.

"Why don't we get out of here," he said I nodded.

We drove in silence but this time I was totally comfortable, well that was until he took my hands into his. Ten minutes later he pushed me through the front door of his house, kissing me. Before we reached his room I was already taking off his clothes.

"Wait, wait Brian," he said. He put his shirt back on and pulled me close. "Its too fast Brian. Were supposed to take it slow."

I suddenly found myself very disappointed. Talk about playing hard to get.

I woke up next to Drew the next morning. He had his arm across me. I looked at the time, realizing that I was late for choir practice. I pulled myself away and kissed him in the forehead before I left.

I left my cell phone in his car. When I looked at it I had seven missed calls. Five were from my mother and two from pastor Shaw. I dialed Pastor Shaw first. I wanted to tell him that I was on my way. He said it was alright apparently I hadn't been the only one that was late.

I took a deep breath before I called my mother. "Brian where have you been?" she yelled. It wasn't a question that I could answer because I wouldn't be able to get a word in. When she was done I was grounded and I had to give her my car keys again until further notice. She definitely put me in a bad mood and because of that I almost got myself in an accident. I flipped off the other driver and headed towards the church.

I looked through the music and the lyrics Pastor Shaw had given me before we started to sing. Jenny was there practicing as she too was going to sing. I smiled when I saw her and made my way towards her.

"So I heard you talked to Tyler?"

"I did," I said pretending I was reading.

"Details Brian I'm all about the details," she said, pinching me. I smiled rubbing where she pinched me be fore I told her everything. "My brother is such an idiot sometimes." She rolled her eyes and looked at some kid who walked in. I noticed that she was blushing.

"Who is that?" I asked.

"No one, I mean I don't know who he is," she said looking down.

"You like him don't you?"

"I don't know what you're talking about, come on we have to practice." I smirked and I started to sing my own lyrics. Suddenly I forgot what I was mad at.
