My Definition of Normal
They always tell you to be yourself, but the second that you try to break the status quo and be your true self, they tell you to stop and be ?normal?. But the question always is, ?what is normal?? Is it normal for me to pretend to like roses when I really like lilies, is it normal for me to pretend that football is my life when I would much rather be on the flag corps, is it normal for me to pretend to like her when I really, really like him? Everyone else thinks so, but I don?t.
?Carter, come on. It?s time to get up, it?s the first day of school,? I yelled to my brother after my alarm went off.
?Ugh! I hate school, what time is it?? he groggily asked, barely moving in his bed.
?7:01, now come on, let?s go,? I replied, turning on my commander voice.
?School doesn?t start until 8:20, why are we getting up now?? he asked; awake, but still not moving from his bed.
?Because you take a 30 minute shower and take an extra half hour just to finish getting ready. Besides, I like to get to the school at about 8:05, so we need to leave at about 8, any more questions?? I cheekily responded.
Knowing he knew I was right, I waited for him to give in and get up.
?Ugh! Fine, I?m up, I?m up! You do realize that you are not normal, right? Who is ever happy at this time of day?? he asked, more talking to himself than me.
And so began the usual morning routine, Carter got in the shower, and I went to our living room to watch the news. About 45 minutes later, he got out of the bathroom and went to our room to finish getting ready, and I went to the bathroom to get ready for school. Ten minutes later, my short, dark blond hair is slightly spiked; my white, almost perfect teeth are brushed, thankfully I have never needed braces; and I?m dressed in my signature dark blue jeans and a t-shirt. Since it?s the first day of school, I decided to go with my bright orange South Pole v-neck shirt, my almost black jeans, my rhinestone pleather cuff, my black converse high-tops, and my rainbow cuff that has ?GAY? embroidered on it in black. All in all, I thought I looked pretty good. My shirt is just tight enough to show off my slightly defined upper body, and my jeans are loose fitting. I can?t stand wearing tight jeans; it?s an old habit from my fat days.
This summer, I came out, so I decided that I needed to get in shape. Every day I ran, swam, or danced, just so I could possibly lose the gut that I have grown to loathe. Luckily, I was very successful, seeing as I now show hints of a six pack.
I tried to shave my chest once. An hour after I made this decision, I had done it and decided I hated it. I just didn?t feel like me anymore, so I let it grow back, but it still kind of looks as if I?m fourteen, if a fourteen year old had hair not only all over his pecks, but then blanketing out to the waistline from between his pecks like the bottom half of an hourglass.
?Carter, come on, let?s go!?
?All right, I?m coming!?
About five minutes later, we were at school, and I met up with my best friend, May. May and I always meet in the art room, where she is always working on some random art project. May is majorly into art; whereas I prefer the performing side of the fine arts. I play trombone in the schools marching/concert band, I am on the flag corps, and I wish that our small-town-Missouri school had a drama program, so I could try out for every play.
And when I say small town Missouri school, I?m not kidding. My graduating class has 25 kids and 2 foreign exchange students. Last year?s class had 16 kids, 3 of them being foreign exchange students. Oh, and did I mention that I am the only out, gay male in our whole school? Yes, I am, and it really, really sucks.
?Davis! I have good news for you,? May squealed, her long, black hair bouncing as she did.
?Wow, it must be something good to have you this excited. What is it?? I asked.
?There is a new kid, and he is fine! I?m talking hotter than anything I have ever seen before.?
?Really, initial reading?? I asked, meaning, ?Is he gay, straight, bi, or taken??
May has excellent gaydar, she immediately knew about me when she first met me last year, and I thought I hid it pretty well. She was the new kid last year, and, before I even said hi, she almost outed me in front of the whole school. Luckily, I stopped her in time, pulled her off to the side, and explained that I wasn?t ready to come out yet to her. We have been best friends ever since.
?Um, I don?t know. He?s kind of a hard read,? she vaguely said, messing with long, black hair.
?Okay, any idea what class he?s in??
?No idea, but I hope ours!?
?I do as well, but,? I started until I was interrupted by the time-to-get-to-class bell.
?Whoops, time for class, see you later,? May said as she walked out of the art room toward whatever class she had.
I decided I better get to chemistry before I?m late, so I went to the science classroom. Once I enter the classroom, with two minutes until the tardy bell, I immediately saw about fifteen faces that I recognized as my classmates. While I knew all of their names, I didn?t really know that much about them individually. And, of course, they all formed into their cliques. Even in a school with about 500 kids in the preK-12th grades there are cliques. There were the popular girls, the athletic boys, and then me. I am my own clique unless May is with me, and that is just fine with me. Don?t get me wrong, I am not a social outcast, I just don?t quite fit the standards of the cliques here, and I really don?t want to. I?m quite content being me. They are all nice to me, and if I really wanted to, I could probably talk to them, but today I didn?t really feel like it. So I sat down at the desk in the front of the room and waited for class to begin.
A few moments after I sat down, a new face walked in the classroom. Oh. My. God. He is HOT! He has short, brown hair; a beautiful smile with perfect, white teeth; he stood at about 6'2", comparable to my 5'11"? height; he is slightly tanned, I believe sun-kissed would be the term; he is toned, not like a body builder, but like a dancer or swimmer; and he has beautiful green eyes. All of this beauty was decorated by a tight, black t-shirt and skinny jeans. But I didn?t have a lot of time to appreciate this beauty seeing as he sat down next to me and introduced himself.
?Hey, my name?s Erik. What?s yours?? he asked, flashing his perfect smile and holding out his hand for me to shake.
?Uh, hi, my name?s Davis,? I barely got out as I took his hand and shook it, forgetting that my rainbow wristband was on the wrist of the hand he is shaking right now.
?Cool, so are you a junior or senior?? He asked as he let go of my hand.
?Senior, what about you?? I asked, thankful he didn?t notice the wristband, or didn?t care if he did.
?Same here, transferred from Wichita, Kansas, when my dad got a job in St. Joe. He wanted my sister and me to go to a small school, so we moved out here to Stewartsville. Besides, mom loves small towns, don?t ask me why.?
?That?s cool. We moved here from St. Joe five years ago because mom didn?t want me to go to the middle school out there. She actually grew up here and knew this was a really good school, so she moved back. So were you into any sports or something??
?Yes, actually I was on the swim team, you guys have one here?? He asked, looking one hundred percent serious.
?I?m sorry, no. We don?t even have a pool here,? I said, trying not to laugh. ?You do realize that there are only about 500 people here, right? And that?s including the pre-school kids.?
?Oh wow, no I didn?t. Seriously, you guys only have, like, 500 people in the whole school??
?Ya, we?re kinda smallish, but the teachers actually care here. And it?s really cool, cause they actually want to help-,? I started.
?That?s not what I heard,? said Mr. Jobb as he walked in the door and brought the class to attention.
I couldn?t talk to Erik after that since Mr. Jobb started class and made a speech about the rules and what we were going to cover that year. What he didn?t mention was the basic rule of all his classes, you choose to pay attention in his class, you will do fine; but if you choose to slack off in his class, you will fail, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Once he was done giving that speech, he handed out a packet of Latin and Greek prefixes and suffixes for us to memorize. We would be tested on the first one hundred on Monday.
Once he was done, he told us the rest of the hour was free time to be used as we saw fit. Immediately, most of the other kids started talking. I started making the note cards for me to study. To my left, I noticed Erik looking somewhat lost.
?Hey, what?s wrong?? I asked.
?Well, what are we supposed to do??
?You can be productive and work on studying for this test or you can talk to whomever, it?s your choice. I recommend the first option, need some note cards??
?Ya, thanks,? he said as I handed him a stack of 100 note cards.
?It helps to write them all down on note cards and then take, like, ten, memorize them, and then take another ten, memorize them, and so on and so forth. Just make sure you quiz yourself on all the ones you have memorized as you go,? I explained, remembering my strategy from doing this assignment last year in duel credit biology.
?Thanks, maybe we could do this together at my house after school, if you want?? He asked, trying to be cool when I could sense his nervousness, making me wonder if this was a date.
?Sure, but I?ll have to take my brother, Carter, home. Maybe you could follow me to my house, and then I can follow you to yours??
?Sure, I can do that. My sister may not like it, but she?ll get over it. What grade is your brother in??
?He?s a sophomore, what about your sister??
?This is awesome; she?s a sophomore as well. Maybe they?ll have something to study, so we can just head to my house,? he responded, seeming very giddy.
?Okay, and even if they don?t, it?s not going to kill him to hang with her for a little while,? I responded, liking this plan.
?Sweetness, I?ll meet you in the school parking lot after school,? he said, trying to hide his excitement.
?Sounds like a plan, I?ll probably see you next hour,? I said as the bell rang.
To Be Continued?
Hey guys and gals! This is my first work of fiction at all, so please don?t be afraid to email me with your constructive criticism and/or compliments at daniel.enns@yahoo.com. I?ll try to respond to every single one of them, even if you just send one to say ?hi?, I?ll probably say ?hi? back, lol. I seriously need your encouragement, though. It took two English teachers and a whole lot of friends to convince me it were any good. I will not continue if I don?t get anything back, so please, please email me.
