MY FUNKY AVATAR part 3
When I arrived home, I immediately decided to give Sam a call. I was confused as hell so I needed to have a clearer understanding of everything that occurred during the last 24 hours. If anyone could do that, it would be Sam.
"Why did you let him take me?" I blamed her.
"I was not the one who strategically fainted in Adam's arms, you know" she replied as if she was not joking. I guessed she had a point, but the "strategically" part was not planned at all, and I had to make her see that.
"You left me alone, and made me come with him even though you knew I was unconscious," I said, trying to squeeze out every ounce of guilt in her. When she laughed, I instantly knew she wasn't buying it.
"Get this," she explained. "Not only did you have the chance to kiss the adorable singer of the Avatars, but also you managed to spend a night with him. It's the dream of every female of this country."
"That's stupid," I answered. "I'm not a girl. Besides, I'm not even gay. And Adam's not even close to that, I think."
"Ryan, you're taking on his side because you are a die-hard fan, and I know because I am, too," Sam told me seriously. "But if you think about what he did to you that night, don't you think he's outing himself for everyone to see?"
The mysterious kiss began to unravel itself. It dawned on me that of all the females in that hallway, Adam chose to kiss me. Why would he do that if he wasn't gay? I went back to our conversation in the hotel room earlier that day and I remembered him telling me I looked cute sleeping. No, it's all in my head.
"Maybe it was just a publicity stunt." My voice had no confidence.
"Do I have to tell you over and over that Adam's gay?" she asked, irritated by my stubbornness. "It's too risky to be a stunt, and they don't need to publicize either. They're already icons. You should stop putting him in a pedestal and worshipping him like he's perfect and see him for who he really is- a human just like us."
"But why did he choose me?" I told her. "Why didn't he kiss any of his group members? They're way better than me."
"That I don't know," she bluntly said. For the first time in my life I heard Sam admitting she didn't know something. I realized I should also stop putting her in a pedestal. "Maybe he couldn't resist himself when he saw you."
I decided not to tell her what Adam's reason was for kissing me because for all I care he could be joking, and that would put me in a more embarrassing situation.
"Don't give me crap, Sam," I told her, my voice raised a little. "Why would he be attracted to me? I don't look good anyway."
"You're fishing, huh?" she chuckled. It was a laugh that had a sarcastic ring to it.
"What?" I asked.
"Fishing for compliments," she replied. "I guess you pretended not to notice the girls staring at you during the Avatar's concert, don't you? You know you were a stud, but mostly it was because you were the only guy there. I bet if the Avatars weren't there, all of those females are in your fan's club now."
"Don't exaggerate. Nobody was looking at me," I said. Maybe it was because I did not see them. I thought for a moment and remembered that during those times, I was staring at Adam. Of all the girls there, I found myself interested over the singer of the Avatars. Could I be gay? The idea scared me.
"Anyway, what I'm trying to say is..." Samantha explained when suddenly the door bell rang. I wondered who was outside since nobody visited me ever except Sam, who was on the other line.
"Hold on a sec," I told her, "someone's at the door."
I took off from my seat and headed towards the entrance of my apartment. There he was, Adam, my favorite singer, my idol, before me. He was wearing a cap on his head and shades as if a disguise and he wore a plain shirt and jeans. He was fumbling his shoes like a little child when I opened the door, and he was surprised when he saw me. He had the widest and brightest of smiles the moment our eyes met, and I recognized the same strange feelings resurfacing.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, more curious than annoyed.
"Relax," he said, his voice again sending shivers down my spine. With just one word my defenses were broken. "Nobody saw me. I went here alone."
"That's not what I am talking about," I said, but then I looked around just in case. "Why are you here?"
"I wanted to check if the contact details you gave me are correct," he told me as he slipped the paper with my address in his pocket and patted it like something precious. "The truth is, I came by to see you. I missed you, Ryan."
"But I just arrived from your hotel room!" I exclaimed. When I saw him grinning at me, I lost it. To his luck, a neighbor passed us by but did not recognize Adam yet, so I pulled him into my apartment and slammed the door shut before things get worse.
"Wow!" he said, "That's a unique way of saying 'Come in'."
I offered him a seat when we got to the living room. He comfortably sat beside me while I reached for the phone. Hopefully, there was no dial tone answering me.
"Hello?" I whispered.
"What took you so long?" Sam, my curious friend, instantly asked. "Was that important?"
"Yeah, I guess," I answered. I realized I had been saying that line often during these last days, and it confirmed the state of mind I was currently having.
"Who was it?" she asked. I turned to Adam and he was examining some pictures I displayed in the living room. Having him inside my house certainly added to my troubles. "Come on, tell me."
"I need to go because that someone is waiting for me to finish this conversation. Do you really have to know?" I asked as if I wanted her to answer no. But then again, if faced with that question she would always answer yes.
"I can just come by your apartment then, and meet that person once and for all," she threatened me with emphasis on the word person. I was thinking she already knew who he was.
"Are you my wife? I can just ignore you knocking on my door and call the police if you try something unnecessary," I replied. "Because I think you can't stand waiting, you impatient lady."
"Ok," Sam said, defeated. "You win. But promise me you'd tell me later, loverboy?"
"You're intelligent," I said. "That's what I like about you. I got to go. Bye."
"Bye."
I faced Adam and he fixed his position and sat properly as if preparing for an interview. Everything seemed so perfect about him- his handsome face, his sexy body, his disarming voice. He had a lopsided grin plastered on his face and I can't help but give in.
"What brings you here?" I asked him. "Our date was supposed to be scheduled tomorrow if I'm not mistaken."
"Ryan," he answered, his eyes never losing contact with mine. "That's exactly what I came here for. Let's plan what we will be doing tomorrow."
"We could have talked on the phone if that was your purpose," I said. If he were another guy with the same annoying attitude, I'd have kicked him out of the house before he got a chance to say 'hi'. But he is Adam, and he had this control over me I could not put my finger on. I even liked that annoying side of his. "Well, since you are here now, would you like a drink?"
"Water would be fine," he told me as I went into the kitchen. "By the way, you got a nice cozy place here. It's quite neat for a young man like you. Do you live alone?"
"I've been independent ever since I learned to read and write," I said coldly while I handed him what he requested. I usually dismiss people asking about my personal background.
"Where are your parents?" he asked, oblivious to my feelings. He took a sip and looked up at me with those brooding eyes that made my knees weak.
"Let's not go there," I said blankly. Normally, I wanted to tell him to fuck off, mind his own business, and get the hell out of my life. I hated myself for letting him get the best of me. If he would ask me to have sex right then and there, I would have complied. Damn, I hope he doesn't notice I am intimidated by his presence and would grant anything he asked for.
"Oh, ok," he stated, respecting my decision though he did not understand my concern. I was glad he didn't want to pursue questioning me on that issue. "Do you have a girlfriend?"
"Direct to the point, eh?" I replied, unsure whether or not to continue this uncomfortable conversation. That is in my point of view; because I was sure by his expression he was so interested. "No. I don't have a girlfriend. But why do you want to know?"
His face lit up as if I saved his life. I was getting nervous, but happy at the same time. Being near him, I was undergoing multiple emotions and all of them in the highest degree. I wondered what that could mean.
"Because I wouldn't be courting you if you had one," he told me and gave me a naughty wink. I almost fell from my seat with what he said. Damn, now a guy wanted to be my lover, and not just some guy, but the hottest and most famous bachelor that walked this side of the world- the lead vocalist of the band Avatars, Adam. I should have lied, because now I know I would be receiving constant death threats from his millions of heartbroken worshippers.
This confirms he's gay, doesn't it? What am I going to do now? My dream of isolation and privacy was beginning to fall apart with my association with him. Unconsciously, I had been staring off in space far too long after his revelation.
"That means you're gay, right?" I asked. I wanted to make sure before I choose a course of action. He began to lose that aura of confidence drastically, and I knew he was new to this type of thing. I knew he had been single all throughout his career, but now this. He must be crazy.
"I'm monogamous," he said with a smile as if trying to reassure me. "If you want to use labels, then I guess you're right on target. You're my soul mate, Ryan, and I'd do anything in my power to get you by my side."
I was frightened by what he said. What could a poor, anti-social employee do against a well-known, influential, and rich stud like Adam? Was he implying I got no choice but to submit? Was he telling me he gets everything he wants?
"Being soul mates does not necessarily mean we should be lovers," I explained, trying to find an exit. "Maybe we could be best friends. I could settle with that."
He stood up without a word; his face was serious and unrelenting. "I'd still find a way," he said, not giving up on the idea. "It was you, in my dreams. We were meant to be."
I hate to say it but he sounded like he was obsessed with me. I thought he was nuts.
"I'll drop by 6 pm tomorrow," he stated, his usual self returning. He had this irresistible personality I could not decline. "You should be prepared by then."
I nodded in understanding. He helped me up and let me lead him to the door. He kissed my cheek and his scent entered my nostrils. He smelled uniquely Adam.
"When this goes public, this could destroy you with no probability of redemption," I reminded him. He was nonchalant.
"I'm willing to sacrifice everything, if that means we'd be together," he said staring at my eyes. He left before I could say anything.
Butterflies fluttered inside my stomach with what he said. My heart was pounding inside me. As he walked away, I smiled to myself. I'm a nobody, and this nobody has got nothing to lose. The situation we're in is dangerous, but it was Adam who was taking all the risks. If it would leave me hurt in the end, it would be Adam who had lost more. I decided I'd take a chance.
To be continued...
