It's time for the July 4th celebrations in the bay area. CJ does his remote shows, and there are a few surprises for everyone including an impropmtu July 4th party at CJ's patio. Keep a watch out for chapter 20, when Ronny returns to Tampa and the gang of four is back together!

I can tell I'm getting use to the early schedule as I did not jump this morning when the alarm sounded. I'm glad that the day is finally here for my first live remote broadcast. I hope every broadcaster goes through the feelings I've had in the past 24 hours. Otherwise, I will have to chalk it up to me being more nervous than I need to be.
I finished up in the bathroom and went into the closet. To show my patriotism I decided to wear red, white and blue for both days. Today I'm going for a red polo, white shorts and blue shoes. I can hear Aunt Sally saying "you look so nice, and I'm happy to see you in the holiday colors."
I exited the bedroom and as usual my big, handsome man was waiting for me at the breakfast bar. He had me do a spin to show off the outfit and said "very handsome! You look comfortable and ready for 4th of July activities." I replied "good, exactly how I wanted my look to come off today." Wally poured my mug of coffee, walked me to the door and gave me my morning hug and kiss. He said "do great things today, CJ. I'm sending all of my positive energy to you today. I'm sorry I won't be there today, but I'll be with you all day tomorrow my love. I love you baby." I smiled at him and said "I love you Wally and I'll see you later today."
I pulled into the station at my normal time. I was the first one into the newsroom. I got a head start on my lineup and about 15 minutes later I heard Angela saying "goodness, you are too much of an early bird for me. How are you this morning CJ?" I smiled, took a sip of my coffee and said "I am doing great Angela. Let's get this remote underway -- I'm excited for it to happen today." She laughed and said "in a couple more hours CJ, but you're going to do great today."
Around 4:00 am Angela said "let's get your segment loaded". What she did not know is that I had loaded it 10 minutes before she spoke up to me. I showed her what I did and she said "it looks good CJ. I'll be taking a portable monitor with us so that you can view the shots while you're speaking live at the beach." I said "okay sounds good. Do I need to give any particular lead ins for the technical director back here to switch the slides?" She said "yes, try to do a lead in on each such as let's take a look at the local radar, or wherever I want to go next." I wrote myself some notes of my order I entered so that I can give a proper lead in for each switch I needed."
At 4:15 Angela said "let's hit the road for the beach. Carl is going to be the remote engineer and camera man for us today." I had not met Carl yet, so I shook hands with him and said "good to be working with you Carl." He smiled and said "right back at you CJ. I've heard nothing but great compliments about you, so I hope you take it easy on me this morning!" I laughed and Angela said "let's load up and go to the beach men." Carl drove the van and Angela and I reviewed the format for the morning.
We arrived at the beach around 4:35 am. Carl immediately began calibrating the equipment and said "Angela go pick out the first shoot area, and I'll bring the camera over to you two in a few minutes." Angela said "since the beach is not crowded yet, let's do this shot on the pier where we have more light to work with." I said "that makes sense to me Angela."
Carl had everything up and working. He said "I have the technical director on the phone. Let's do a camera and microphone check CJ." I began speaking a mock broadcast saying various things. Carl made one adjustment to the microphone. About a minute later he said "we look good. They are picking up the video and audio fine in the studio. CJ, where do you want your monitor placed to view your static segment shots? I asked Carl "please move it up closer to me about five feet if he can. I said there is good, will that work for the three of us?" Carl said "it's all good here." Angela said "I think that will be fine for the first show CJ."
5:00 came and Carl said "going to St Petersburg in sixty now." One minute later he cued me to go and I said "Good morning, St Petersburg and welcome to beach fest 2023. I'll be doing the weather forecast from various spots on St Pete Beach this morning. Stay tuned for the beach forecast coming up later. Jennifer ... ."
I did it! Granted it was only my intro, but I had broken the ice on my first live remote. I said to myself "I can do this. Go in thinking you're a winner CJ, and you'll come out a winner." Angela came over to me and said "that wasn't bad now, was it?" I smiled back at her and said "I feel good Angela! Let's get this show rolling."
Carl gave me a one-minute warning. Ross was wrapping up the traffic report with Jennifer. He gave the intro "let's head out to the beach and catch up with CJ. Hey CJ is there anyone on the beach yet with you?" Carl pointed to me and I started in with "Good morning, Ross. Surprisingly there are people out on the beach already this morning getting ready for the various activities planned for beach fest 2023. We're at the pier on St Pete Beach now, and we'll be making various stops this morning up and down the beach. Let's take a look at the local temperatures around the bay area this morning....". I continued on and made it through all of my shots fine. I was able to see everything on the monitor that Carl set up for me. When the live shot came back to me, I wrapped up with "So Ross and Vicki, today promises to be a hot and humid beach fest for St Pete Beach. If you plan on being here today make sure to use plenty of sunscreen, keep hydrated, enjoy the family and all the beach activities but most of all -- have fun today everyone. Ross, back to you."
I saw a figure appear from the news van and the individual was clapping. It ended up being Bailey who watched the feed from the van. He brought us three coffees over and said "looks good CJ, just as I expected. Angela, what is lined up for the 5:30 show?" She replied "I'm going to have CJ talk to a few jet skiers right down here off the pier." Bailey said "great. Do me a favor and get on the jet ski CJ if they will let you for a better shot perspective." Soon it was time for my 5:30 intro. Carl pointed at me and I started speaking saying "Hi there St Petersburg. CJ Walters here at beach fest 2023. More people are starting to come to the beach as the sun is rising in the east. I'll be bringing you the weather as well as talking to some jet ski operators later in this half-hour. Jennifer...."
Before the weather segment, I spoke with the jet ski operators who are named Mike and Stan. They are the owners of MS Water Sports. I found out they have been participating in beach fest for almost 10 years now. We continued talking until Carl gave me the one-minute notice. I asked them "do you mind if I start the shot sitting on the jet ski, then I'll begin asking you two questions?" They both said "sounds good CJ."
Carl gave me the cue and I started in "Hey Ross and Vicki, we've moved down from the pier to the beach. I'm with Mike and Stan this morning who are the owners of MS Water Sports. Mike and Stan thanks for being with channel 2 this morning. How long have you been setting up at beach fest, and what all activities do you offer the beach fest attendees?" Mike and Stan answered my questions while Carl pulled out on the camera shot to show me on the jet ski. I spoke back up and said "Mike and Stan, this is one of your jet skis I'm on, but how many do you have here today for the crowd?" The interview continued and Carl gave me the wrap up signal. I then went into a quick review of the weather slides and the live shot came back to me. I said "Ross once I get more light out here, I plan to take one of the jet skis out and have some fun wave running on the gulf this morning. For all of you coming out to beach fest please look up Mike and Stan, and remember to keep that sunscreen on and stay hydrated today. Ross, back to you...."
Ross said "thanks CJ. Let's make sure Carl gets plenty of shots of you wave running later today. The morning news returns after this break." Bailey re-appeared and thanked Mike and Stan for helping out this morning and handed them each a station gift bag. Angela looked at me and said "well done CJ. The interview was smooth and you played off their comments well." Bailey smiled and said "I taught him everything he knows!" We all got a good laugh out of that.
For the remaining two shows Angela had set me up with the organizers of a sand volleyball tournament and a group of face painters who were offering free face painting for kids today. The face painting segment during the 6:30 show went very well. I was speaking with Kendra who was organizing the event. When we got done with my weather forecast, I said "Kendra, can you make my face look like a muskie this morning?" Kendra said, "what's muskie CJ?" I replied "it's a big fish." She said "sure I can do a fish" and began painting on my face. Before I knew it, I had a fish head on one cheek with a back fin on the other cheek. Carl gave the wrap up and I said "thanks Kendra for making me into a fish this morning. Ross, I'm going to let Kendra finish up here with this fun activity. For all of those planning to attend beach fest today, activities begin at 7:00 am this morning and go until 10:00 pm tonight. There's plenty to do for the entire family Ross, so I encourage everyone to make it down to St Pete Beach and join in on the fun. I'm CJ Walters reporting for channel 2 weather...."
Carl said cut, and my morning remote was complete. Bailey and Angela were laughing so much at me. Carl was still shooting the camera, and I'm sure someone was taping this at the station for a future bloopers tape. I had fun and Kendra was a great sport. Bailey and Angela thanked her for all of the help and gave her a channel 2 gift bag. She shook my hand and said "CJ thank you for being a good sport. I'm not usually up at this hour, but I'm going to start watching you in the morning! You have a good day."
Bailey said "great show you three! Everything came off wonderful and CJ, I loved the last segment. We need to get you a towel and get you presentable for breakfast. CJ, do you know any good places on the beach for breakfast?" I smiled and said "I sure do Bailey. There's a diner up the road and the omelets are the hit item on the menu." Bailey said "sounds good. Carl, let's get the equipment into the van and lock it up. I'll drive you three to breakfast and bring you back. CJ, I think I have a couple of towels in my SUV. Let's go take a look."
I took them to the diner. The waitress recognized me from my visits with Ronny, Wally and Alex. She smiled at me and said "morning CJ. Where's the rest of your regular crew at?" I replied "Hey Tami. I brough a new crew in this morning to get them acquainted with the diner." She said "welcome all. Follow me and I'll get you seated." Tami gave us menus and asked if everyone wanted coffee and water? We all nodded yes and she said "I'll be right back with coffee and water for all of you in just a few minutes."
Angela reviewed the menu and said "this all sounds very good." I said "I've had quite a few breakfasts here since I have been in the St Pete Beach area. I don't think you can go wrong with any selection." Tami came back with a cup of coffee for each of us along with a carafe full of coffee. She brough four glasses and a pitcher of ice water as well.
We placed our orders and Tami asked "is this on one check or four separate checks?" Bailey said "one please Tami. We're celebrating CJ's first live broadcast from beach fest this morning." Tami said "that's right, I forgot about the show this morning CJ. I missed it, but I'm off work tomorrow and plan to catch your broadcast from the pier." I said "sounds good Tami. The show went well this morning and I had a great time doing it. I'm looking forward to the noon show today, as well as the shows from the pier tomorrow."
Tami left us and I asked the group "what suggestions do you have for me for the noon show or tomorrow?" Angela started and said "I don't want you to change much at all. Every segment went fine this morning and I have an idea for noon. First though, are you afraid of heights?" I said "no, heights do not bother me. Why do you ask?" She replied "there is a parasail firm giving rides today further down the beach. They have a platform on the beach where you begin with a run. A boat if off shore and begins pulling a rope which is attached to a parasail apparatus. What if we get you fixed up in the apparatus, and for your closing back to Ross, we show you running on the platform and begin to go airborne over the gulf? Bailey, do you have any concerns with this?" Bailey smiled and said "I'm fine with the idea if CJ wants to do it." I grinned and said "let's give it a shot. What do we do for my closing with Ross at the bottom of the show?" Bailey said "what if we go to Carl who is filming you live parasailing over the gulf and Ross makes comments for you?" Carl spoke up and said "I like that. It should be no problem to keep up with CJ. You can keep waving at me the whole time you're up there."
Bailey cracked up and said "this sounds like an excellent show everyone. If we can't do it for whatever reason, let's pull back and figure something else out. I'll head back to the station and clue Nick and Ross in on what we're attempting to do."
Tami brought our breakfast out and everyone enjoyed their meal tremendously. Carl said "I have got to put this place on my list for a return visit. I have driven by here so many times, and never made an effort to come in. My mistake!" Angela and Bailey agreed with Carl's assessment.
Tami cleared our dishes and we each filled up another cup of coffee. I said "face painting this morning and parasailing this afternoon. Who said you can't have fun on television?" Angela cracked up and said "Vicki!" I thought Bailey and Carl were going to laugh themselves to death. Bailey finally composed himself and said "thanks Angela, I needed that one this morning. I think I'll go back to the station, talk to Nick and Ross, grab a few things from my office then return out here with all of you. Does anyone mind if I come back out? I enjoyed the show this morning and after hearing what is planned for the noon show, I want to be here. Anyone need anything from the station?" I smiled and said "yeah Bailey, will you grab me a large swimsuit from the closet? I'd rather have a pair of those on versus my good shorts in case I get wet in the gulf this afternoon." Bailey replied "I can do that. Tell you what, I'll even return with a pair on with a station polo to promote this event!" Carl said "what the hell, bring me back a large pair also, let's all do it!"
Bailey paid the bill, gave Tami a very nice tip and loaded us up in his SUV. We went back to the station van and he said "I'll return around 10:30."
Angela and I went to the parasail booth and pitched the idea to the owner Larry. Larry loved it and said "I'll be happy to do this with you. We'll strap up CJ in the apparatus and explain the steps along the way. Once we have him in the harness, he can finish the weather segment and then we'll come back to him and watch him run down the platform and go airborne." Angela said "this is perfect. We'll have Carl keep zooming in on CJ, and come back for the show closing segment showing CJ waving to the camera from the air. Does everything sound okay to you CJ?" I said "this is going to be a blast. I've got to make some calls and make sure my fans are watching!"
Carl moved the van down to the parasail area. Before I got my first call in, I heard "heay, it's CJ Walters from channel 2 everyone!" I looked over and there he was -- my friend Alex. I cracked up and said "get your ass over here!" He came over with a beach bag in his hand. I said "Angela and Carl, this is my friend Alex who is the property manager at my condo complex. Alex, this is Angela the producer of the news and our engineer Carl." Greetings were shared between the three of them. Alex said "I brought you a change of clothes for your noon show." He pulled out the big ass pair of sunglasses I purchased for Wally, along with a huge sombrero hat. I busted out laughing and said "I know where the glasses came from, but where did you get that hat? Alex grinned and giggled saying "I only bring it out for special occasions. I thought your first live remote broadcast qualified as a special occasion today."
Angela was still laughing and said "Alex, I love it! CJ, how about we do your opener after St Petersburg in 60 with you wearing the hat and sunglasses?" Alex said "YES -- CJ you have got to do it!" I said "okay, that sounds good as well. Should we forewarn Ross so he can compose himself on set?" Angela said "nah, he is a professional and should be able to get through this fine. I also want you to pull Alex in and interview him as a beach fest attendee. Alex, are you up for a few questions from CJ?" Alex said "I sure am Angela, let's make this happen! How does my hair look?" That did it for me. I fell to the ground and could not contain my laughter.
I called Wally first. He answered saying "hey babe, how is it going?" I said "it's all very good. If you can watch the noon show please do so. Dr. Frankenstein's creation has designed my noon wardrobe and I'm going to interview him as a beach fest attendee. Plus, after my weather segment, I'm going to go for a parasail ride live on air." Wally cracked up and said "I'll plant myself at a tv before noon. Have fun sweetheart and be careful."
I called UD next and said "UD, I'm in between shows and don't have a lot of time. Please get everyone to watch the live feed at noon. It's going to be a killer show with an exciting twist at the end." UD replied, I'm on it CJ. You got me intrigued." I ended with "I'll talk to you later, bye UD!"
I told Alex "See if you can get Ronny to stream the noon show." Alex smiled and said "I'm on it chief!"
Bailey returned to the site and had the swimsuits with him. I changed into a pair and gave Alex my good shorts to hold on to. I'm glad he had the big beach bag with him. Angela introduced Alex to Bailey and informed Bailey what we were up to for my intro. Bailey cracked up and said "this is going to be a classic segment in channel 2 history!"
Before I knew it, we had ten minutes until the noon show. Carl had me do a video and audio check with the technical director at the studio. Angela wrote down all the latest weather statistics for me. Nick had loaded updated statistics into the switcher. I made one last check of the local radar from the van and saw that no showers or thunderstorms were present in the bay or immediate gulf area.
Carl gave me the minute warning. I put the glasses and hat on. Alex was standing off to my left side and was ready to enter the camera shot.
The show opened with Ross saying "Good afternoon, St Petersburg and thank you for joining us at noon. Let's kick things off with your St Petersburg in sixty." Carl gave me the cue and I started in saying "Good afternoon, St Pete Beach. I'm CJ Walters here at beach fest 2023. As you can see, I survived the face painting this morning and I've found a great pair of sunglasses with this wonderful beach sombrero as well. I've got Alex here with us who is enjoying the beach fest today. Alex tell the audience what all you have done so far at beach fest today." Alex said "well CJ, once again the city of St Pete Beach can be very proud of this awesome event. I participated in the beach volleyball tournament this morning and got a chance to ride a jet ski which was very fun." I said "Alex did your team win and advance in the volleyball tournament?" He replied "no CJ, we ended up losing in a close match, but we'll be back next year." I continued on and said "Ross the beach has become very crowded during the morning hours. It's a beautiful hot and humid day here. Luckily, we have a very nice breeze coming in off the gulf. I'll have the entire forecast plus a big surprise for the audience later in the broadcast. Back to you Ross."
Ross said "all I can say is CJ has the best beach costume on that I've seen in a long time everyone. In our top story at noon...."
I removed the hat and glasses, and gave them back to Alex. Angela and I went over to get the shot set up with Larry on the platform. Carl rearranged the camera and monitor for me. Alex shouted "go CJ! You got this big guy!"
Carl gave me the one-minute cue. Ross gave the intro saying "let's head back to St Pete Beach and see what CJ is up to." Carl pointed to me and I started in with "Thanks Ross. I'm here with Larry who is the owner of Parasails and more. Larry how long have you been associated with beach fest?" Larry said "thanks CJ and good afternoon, everyone. This is my tenth year working with the city of St Pete Beach at beach fest 2023." I replied "Larry has talked me into going for a parasail ride live during this broadcast. I've never parasailed before, but Larry assures me it's safe and anyone can do it. Larry tell me what's involved in getting someone ready to parasail." Larry said first CJ, we're going to secure you in this safety harness so you probably want to hand your microphone off to your producer Angela. The harness slips over you like this and has four buckles to secure you in. We also attach a safety helmet to you." Once Larry had me trussed up, I took the microphone back and said "let me finish the weather forecast before I go airborne above the Gulf of Mexico. I went through all of my slides and finished up the extended forecast. I said "Ross, I hope you're ready for this at the station. Larry I just need to begin running down this platform as the boat out in front of us will increase speed and pull the rope tighter, which causes the parasail to begin lifting, correct? That's it CJ. I smiled into the camera and said "here goes my parasailing debut St Petersburg. Please come down and enjoy beach fest 2023 at St Pete Beach. I'm sure enjoying the day and will see you all tomorrow for the morning news." Larry gave the boat the signal to take off, and I passed the microphone to Angela. Carl pulled the camera back and got the shot of me running down the platform.
As I was about three quarters down the platform, I felt my feet being lifted off the platform. Gradually my altitude increased and I waived back at the camera. Once I reached the desired altitude, the boat made several trips up and down the beach. I could not believe how great the view was, and I was having a kick-ass time. I waved both arms and hands at Carl and was yelling "Hi Bailey, Angela, Carl and Alex" at the top of my lungs.
Carl let everyone know that Ross had concluded the show. The closing shots were of me parasailing with Ross commenting on my form and guts for doing the stunt live on air.
The boat began slowing down and pulled me back into shore. I followed the instructions that Larry had given me and made a pretty good landing without hurting myself. Once I got back to the platform and had everything removed, I looked at the group and said "that was an awesome experience. I want to do it again!" Bailey just cracked up at me and said "hell of a show kid! You did a kick-ass job. Angela, thank you for the idea -- what a great PR stunt! We need to replay part of this during the evening shows tonight." Angela said "thanks Bailey. I'll work with the evening producer before I leave to get a clip and story created. CJ, that was fantastic! THANK YOU so much for taking the idea and running with it. Carl, excellent camera work. I like all of the camera feed you got with it."
Bailey said "great show you three! Thank you all for your dedicated efforts today. Get out of the station when you can and enjoy the rest of your day." I took my phone and keys from Alex and said I'd meet him back at the condo. He smiled and said "I'll have a beer and cigar waiting for you Mr. Dare Devil Weatherman!"
Angela, Carl and I returned to the studio. I was greeted with a round of applause in the news room. Nick came up to me and shook my hand. He said "that was fucking great CJ. I don't have the guts to do anything like that, and to top it off you did it for a live news broadcast. You shocked the hell out of me. Great job today. Go home, relax and get prepared for tomorrow." I said "I will Nick. See you tomorrow." I went around, said my goodbyes and headed out to the parking lot. I let the ac cool down the jeep before starting out. I pulled out of the lot and said "You fucking did it CJ. You came through and nailed your live broadcast. Good job today, but how do you do anything to top your show from today?" Angela and I will have to come up with another killer idea for tomorrow.
I got back to the condo and decided to go for a workout. I thought back to my morning and laughed at what I had done. When I thought about it, I said to myself "you could have injured yourself running on the platform, the parasail line could have broken you could have done an incorrect landing. Glad everything came out fine for you, and get that video for your hall of fame vault!"
I changed into my workout gear, and went down to the annex building. I had the place to myself, and cranked the stereo to my adult contemporary station. I filled up my water bottle, limbered up and went into my routine. I felt good and still full of adrenaline from the parasailing event. About halfway through my routine, my phone rang and it was Wally. I answered "CJ Walters, dare devil weather man at your service!" Wally cracked up and said "I have always wanted to do that, was it fun?" I said "it was so much fun Wally; I want to do it again. Let's go sometime together?" He said "yep, after seeing you enjoy it so much, I want to try it now with you. Do they build a parasail for two?" I cracked up on that and said "I'm sure someone has one someplace in the sunshine state!"
Wally went on and said "let's keep dinner simple since you have had a big day. Dive bar on the beach okay with you?" I replied "sounds good sweetheart. I'm working out right now, what time will you be back?" He said "we're going to wrap up here at 4:30 pm." I told him "Sounds good. I'm probably going to hit the pool after my workout."
I finished my workout and rinsed off in the gym shower. I changed into a speedo, and went straight to the pool and jumped in. Alex came out a few minutes later and said "what's this, CJ at the pool with no drink?" I cracked up and said "yes, I finished up a workout, showered off and jumped in the pool here for a while. Are you up for dinner tonight? Wally and I are going to our beach place and you're welcome to join us." Alex said "that sounds good CJ. I still can't believe what you did earlier today. You have nerves of steel my friend, I would never do that as I have a fear of heights. And to top it off, you did it on live television! What a PR stunt for the station." I grinned and said "yes, Bailey agrees with you. He said that segment puts me up for the best live news or recreation segment for the Bay Area annual TV awards. I really wasn't thinking about it. I just got it in my mind to do it, and before I knew it, I was having a wonderful time enjoying the beach views from high above. It was a thrilling ride, Alex!"
Alex joined me in the pool and we continued our conversation. He was very inquisitive about all of the equipment in the studio truck and wanted basic knowledge of how the remote video makes it back to the station transmitter for distribution. I explained as best as I could and he seemed satisfied with my answer. We spent a couple of hours lounging around. I said "I'm going to head back to the condo and get changed for dinner." Alex said, "sounds great. I'll meet you two in about 20 minutes."
Wally pulled into the lot just as I was entering the condo. I left the door open for him, and stripped my speedo off quickly, hiding behind the breakfast bar. I jumped out in clear view once he closed the door and said "see anything you like big boy?" He grinned and said "yeah, I see my Greek Adonis before me in his pure studly physique!" He picked me up, carried me to the shower and stripped his clothes off. We entered the shower and began kissing. I said "Alex will be here soon as I invited him to dinner." Wally said "he can wait for 10 more minutes on us!"
We finished our shower and went to the living room. Alex was on the couch watching tv. I said "there he is Wally, one of my first interviewees in St Pete Beach!" I went over to Alex, gave him a high-five and said "thanks for being there for me today, Alex. We had a great interview together." He smiled, did his usual giggle and said "we sure did CJ. Wally, I'll be signing autographs for you later tonight." Wally rolled his eyes and said "come on you two, lets go and I'll buy dinner for both of you tonight."
We got to Wally's place on the beach. The beach was still crowded and the ocean breeze was very comfortable. As we were being seated, two people recognized me and said "great newscasts CJ, we're enjoying you on the weather versus Melissa. Keep up the great work." I stopped at their table and said "thank you both. I'm enjoying the area and am having so much fun bringing the bay area the weather forecast each morning." They introduced themselves and I said "it's so nice to meet you Liam and Elise. Thank you for watching and keep on watching channel 2!"
I joined Wally and Alex at the table. Wally said "soon Alex we won't be able to get into any restaurant in this town because of CJ's fans surrounding him for autographs!" Alex said "I know. I'm going to start working out with him so that I can beef up and be his security guard!"
We all had a big laugh at our comedian of the group. The waiter came to the table and we all ordered a drink. Wally ordered a sampler appetizer platter for the table while we decided what to do for the entrees.
Alex started in telling every piece of detail about the noon show to Wally. He was wrapping up the events and said "and you have to keep your eyes on CJ like a hawk!" Wally said "why is that, Alex?" He said "Bailey and Carl are absolute studs and will take advantage of CJ at some point." Again, I was not expecting Alex's witty comeback and choked on my drink. Alex said "are all of the guys at the station handsome, and does Bailey do all the hiring?" I smiled and said "Bailey hires the talent, and another individual hires our engineering and production staff. Now that you mention it Alex, there are an abnormal number of sexy men at the station. I'm very fortunate to be surrounded by good looking, handsome and sexy men!"
Our appetizer plate came and we made our dinner orders. I went for a fish sandwich and salad. Wally and Alex, both joined me in similar selections. We enjoyed the appetizers and the beach views. Our conversation continued to be very active as Alex kept thinking about new things to tell Wally. He sounded like a kid telling his father everything fun about his day. I grinned and let him continue on.
We finished dinner and another round of drinks. I yawned and said, I'm going to have to call it an early night you two. Please keep on going and enjoy yourselves though since you both have the day off tomorrow. Alex smiled and said "we have big days tomorrow to CJ. We won't be up as early as you, but I'm going to drag your better half over to the pier very early tomorrow morning to cheer you on throughout the day. I looked at Wally and he smiled at me and said "yes dear, I want to be there all day with you tomorrow."
We went back to the condo and I started my nightly preparatory activities. Wally and Alex decided to throw some darts, have a few beers along with a cigar. I gave them both a kiss and hug goodnight and told Wally "I'll keep your side of the bed warm for you dear."
I felt like I was in the movie Ground Hog Day as my alarm went off and I repeated yesterday all over again. I slipped into the shower, dried off, shaved, brushed my teeth and got into my patriotic set of clothes for the day. Wally was out of bed when I left the closet, and was drinking a cup of coffee at the breakfast bar. I sat down with him for a few minutes.' He spoke up and said "do you know how sexy you looked yesterday?" I said "I have an idea my love. I plan to watch the whole segment when I have a chance later this week. I want to get the video to start my `Best of CJ volume I' collection." He grinned and said "coffee to go sweetheart." I said "yes please. After I leave, please get some more sleep." He replied "I will, but I fear that Alex will be jumping on me around 6:00 am telling me to get my ass up!" I gave Wally a hug and kiss goodbye saying "I'll see you later this morning handsome."
I went over to the station and Nick, Angela and Carl were already there. I said "good morning, everyone! Ready for another good day?" They all replied "Yes!" Angela said "I'm reviewing the list of events at the pier today, but I'm afraid we won't have anything as exciting as yesterday." I said "no problem. We can easily focus on a number of the family events today. I'm sure we'll find plenty of fun things to cover with the audience."
I went ahead and began setting up my weather shots. I added the statistics at 4:00 and loaded them to the switcher. Angela said "we don't need to leave that early this morning as the pier is only five minutes away. Around 4:30 Angela, Carl and I loaded into the news van. Angela drove us to the pier and we parked close to the midway rides located in the park next to the pier. She said "let's do your into here as we will have plenty of light from the parking lot lights. We should have a good shot off the pier for 5:30 as the sun begins to come up."
Carl and I got set up and we did the video and audio checks. Everything was complete by 4:50, and I was ready for another fun day.
Carl gave me the one-minute que and I got prepared. He pointed to me and I start off with "Good morning, St Petersburg and Happy July 4th to all. I'm CJ Walters and we'll be live at the pier all morning covering the events for the celebration today. It's going to be another hot day in the bay area, and there is very little chance of rain so the firework shows planned for tonight should all go off as scheduled. I'll have the entire forecast later in the broadcast. Jennifer ...."
Carl said cut and the camera went off me. I caught up with Angela who was already busy lining up the various segments for this morning. The first segment showed me on the merry go round riding one of those bright colored horses. The 5:30 show featured me trying my hand at a pop a shot contest. Basketball is not my forte, but I gave it a good shot. The 6:00 broadcast brought a fierce whack a mole competition with several early risers including Wally. Wally ended up winning the competition and the game operator presented him with a large stuffed bear. I thought to myself "how appropriate a bear for my bear!" I spoke to Wally on camera and said "How does it feel Wally to be the first whack a mole winner this morning." He laughed at me and said "it's an honor CJ. Seriously though, Happy July 4th to everyone and thanks to all of our service members who so willingly protect our country so that all of us can enjoy the freedom we celebrate today on our nation's birthday." I put my hand on Wally's shoulder and said "a very nice sentiment to share this morning, Wally. Thank you for remembering our service members this morning. Ross, let's send it back to you and Vicki."
Angela said "nice conversation guys. Wally, thank you for your wonderful comments this morning. I sincerely appreciate them" and she handed him a station gift bag.
The 6:30 show had me interviewing some runners who were preparing for a 7:00 am start to a 5K race sponsored by the chamber of commerce. Several thousand runners signed up for the race so the morning crowd was definitely growing. I did not know that Angela had punked me though with the runners. When we returned back to my final live shot I began speaking and said "So St Petersburg, make plans to come down to the pier and park today. There are so many events going on here for the whole family to enjoy. Also, don't forget to stay for those fireworks tonight which will be shot off at 10:00 pm. I'm CJ Walters, and I'm going to enjoy the crowd this morning. Ross, I'll send it back to you and talk to you at noon." Carl kept the camera going as Angela had included him in her plans. As I was sending it back to Ross, the runners all started chanting "CJ ... CJ ... CJ..." and before I knew it several of them lifted me up off the ground and I was carried off in a wave. I was still on audio and said "Ross, as you can see the crowd is ready for a wonderful July 4th celebration. Back to you." Carl said cut and I was lowered to the ground. I said "thanks everyone for your help this morning! You're all wonderful and Happy July 4th!" They all applauded for me and Angela came over to me. She said "gotcha. That worked out great and you played off the crowd very well my friend. Congratulations on two very successful live broadcasts. You have significantly enhanced your resume the last two days."
Carl said "how about breakfast everyone? The sandwich place is just a block away and is open today." I asked Carl "do you mind if I extend an invite to a few friends?" Carl smiled and said "the more, the merrier." I rounded up Wally and Alex and the five of us headed out for breakfast. As we entered, I said "breakfast is on me this morning everyone." Angela spoke up and said "nope, Bailey gave me the station credit card and so channel 2 is picking up the tab this morning!"
Cecilia greeted us and seated us at a table for six. She gave me a hug as I was beginning to sit down and said "Senor CJ, I was so worried about you yesterday on your noon broadcast. I can't believe you parasailed. Did you enjoy it?" I smiled and said "it was a thrilling adventure Cecilia and I plan do it again in the future." She said "ah mi Dios. Please no more dare devil stunts on air, my heart cannot take it." We all got a good laugh and Cecilia left us to decide on our menu choices.
Our conversation went well with everyone fully engaged. Angela said to Wally and Alex "thanks to both of you for helping us out. I have to remember to plant some known characters for the talent to interview. Both days went so well, and I appreciate your help." Alex smiled, did his giggle and said "put me on speed dial Angela, I'll be happy to help you out anytime and anywhere. I've been told I have a face for television." Everybody busted out laughing and Wally said "get your hip waiters out everyone as it's getting deep in here." Angela asked Alex "did I give you a station gift bag yesterday, Alex?" He shook his head no, and she followed up with "well I'll get you one when we get back to the news van."
We all had a delicious breakfast sandwich, drank more coffee and eventually decided to head back to the pier and park. Angela paid the bill and Cecilia gave us all a coffee to go. We thanked her and she said "goodbye everyone and have a Happy July 4th!"
We made it back to the news van and Angela gave Alex his gift bag. He routed through it like a kid opening a Christmas Day gift. Angela said "CJ, why don't we split up and look for ideas for the noon show? We'll meet back here at the news van around 10:30 and decide where to go from there?" I said "sounds good Angela." Carl followed her and my dynamic duo followed me.
We came to an electronic display listing the days activities for the crowd. There were sack races and three-legged races planned. Two items caught my eye: one was an obstacle course challenge and the other was a zip line ride. I said to Alex and Wally "found it. How about me on a zip line during the noon show? We can even do both the zip line and obstacle course. One after my intro, and the other at the end of my weather segment." Alex and Wally agreed and Alex said "how about the zip line at the end of your weather. It will tie in nicely with the parasailing from yesterday?" I said "Alex, you are the creative genius today! A perfect segway, thanks buddy." Wally grinned and said "watch out, he's bucking for Angela's job!"
Wally and Alex wanted to continue walking around, so I went back to meet Angela at the van. She was there and said "anything peak your interest? I said "how do these two items sound: we'll do my intro on an obstacle course, and for my weather segment I'll start out at the top of a zip line podium, and cascade down the zip line for the ending. It will tie in with the parasailing from yesterday." Angela gave me a big smile and said "I love it. My only suggestion was to have you turn a mound of clay on a potter's wheel. I think your fans will like the obstacle course and zip line. Let's go clear everything with the operators and get set up for the shots.
Wally and Alex caught back up with us at the obstacle course. Carl had the camera, microphone and monitor set up and ready to go. He did the usual audio and video checks and we were ready to go. Carl gave me the one-minute prompt as Ross introduced the St Petersburg in sixty intro. Carl pointed to me as the camera went live. I kicked in with "Good afternoon, St Petersburg. It's an absolutely beautiful day at the pier complex. We're live today covering the weather from downtown and I'm enjoying all of the events here. Ross, I'm going to tackle this obstacle course now as we send it back to you." I started off on the course and ran across an elevated log, climbed a short wall and went through some rings on a money bar set. Carl got some great shots of me and I heard him say "cut" as we went back to Ross live in the studio.
Carl, Angela and I proceeded over to the zip line. I got set up in the harness and put the monitor on the tower floor to look at my still shots. Carl gave me the one-minute notice and eventually pointed at me. I saw the camera light go red and started with "Well Ross, Angela and Carl talked me into zip lining today. I'm up here ready to go with Pete, the owner of Pete's arial experiences. Pete, how has the crowd been for you today?" Pete started in with "the crowd has been absolutely wonderful today CJ and Happy July 4th to all!" Pete explained how the zip harness and helmet worked. I said "before I go down this line, let's get everyone caught up on the forecast for today." I went through my static graphs, and the camera came back to me. I said "Ross, Carl is going to follow me with the camera, but I hope you enjoy this back at the studio." I stepped off the platform and said "For channel 2 weather, I'm CJ Walters reporting. Ross, I challenge you to come out here and do the zip line today. Have a good afternoon, everyone." I came down in the landing area and Carl said "cut." I got the harness and helmet off and Angela came running to the landing zone. She said "that was perfect CJ. I liked how you spoke all the way down the zip line. Another great live feed for you!" She gave me a hug and said "I'm so glad to be working with you!" I replied "the feeling is mutual Angela; you are making my stories fun to do!" She said "don't be surprised if Bailey sends us out to do more live remotes for human interest stories in the future." I smiled, gave her a high-five and said "I'd enjoy that very much."
On our way back to the van I heard someone yelling CJ! I turned and found Aaron at a food vendor stand serving pizza. Angela and I went up to him, and I made introductions. He smiled and said "CJ, your noon show was so great yesterday. I also enjoyed your zip-line segment today." Angela had one more gift bag with her and said "here Aaron, a channel 2 gift bag for you." Aaron smiled and said "thanks Angela. Here's a coupon for you for a free large pizza. Check us out sometime." I said "Angela, they have the best pizza in the area. You'll like it. Defiitely give it a try sometime. Aaron, are you working here all day today?" He said "I am off at 4:00." I said "plan on stopping by the condo after you are off work. We'll have some dinner and beer." Aaron smiled and said "sounds good CJ. I'll catch up with you later. Bye Angela, it was great to meet you!"
We loaded up the van and Alex said "I'm going to stop at the store and get all the fixings for a 4th of July celebration. If you want why don't you invite Carl, Angela and anyone back at the station for a good old-fashioned cookout!" I said "good idea Alex -- I will do that." Wally said "we emptied the keg last night, and I called to see if they're open today. They are until 4:00 so I'm going to pick up a keg also. Any special requests? I said "surprise me!" He grinned and said "challenge accepted!"
I extended an invite to everyone back to my place for burgers, hot dogs, beer and all the fixings. I was surprised at the number who accepted the invite. Angela, Carl, Nick, Jennifer and Bailey all gave me a thumbs up on the invite. I said "Alex and Wally are getting the fixings now. So, let's plan to meet at 3:00 at my place." I gave the directions to all and headed to the condo to help Wally and Alex out.
I beat Wally and Alex back to the condo. They arrived 20 minutes after I did. I did a quick run through of the condo to make sure everything was in its place. Wally and Alex brought the keg up first and installed it. I said What's on tap for today? Wally replied "Sierra Nevada pale ale." I smiled and said "oh good, that's a great beer. Thanks, my love!"
Alex went back down and grabbed the groceries. I began making hamburger patties up and got the hot dogs ready to go. We also had potato salad, macaroni salad and cole slaw for sides. Alex got a cupcake tray with red, white and blue frosting selections. He also picked up a fruit salad mix which looked fantastic. Alex busied himself mixing up lemonade and had some soda selections to go for anyone who did not want a beer. We were set and the first guest to show up was Bailey. I opened the door and he said "I'm early, sorry about that." I said "no worries come on in and what do you want to drink? We have draft beer, wine, sodas, lemonade and alcohol if you want." Bailey smiled and said "can I trouble you for a vodka and lemonade?" Alex spoke up and said "one vodka lemonade coming up for Bailey." Bailey cracked up and said "so is this place a bachelor pad and you all three help each other out." I said "yep, you figured us out Bailey! Ronny is joining us at the end of this week as he is going to stay here until he decides what he wants to do for his future residence." Alex handed Bailey his drink and Bailey took a sip. Bailey said "ah, nice mix Alex. Thank you!" I introduced Wally to Bailey and before I knew it, more people were at my door. Angela and Carl came in next. Soon followed by Nick, Zach, Jennifer and I was shocked when I saw Ross come in. Ross said "I can't stay long, but I wanted to stop and bring you a couple nice bottles of wine. I cannot tell you how impressed I have been with your broadcasts CJ. It's been a pleasure to work with you the last 10 days, and I look forward to you and I continuing our broadcasts together." I smiled and said "thanks Ross. I appreciate the help you have given me and look forward to our future broadcasts as well. I said can you stay for a drink?" He said "sure I will."
Aaron and a few other people from the station arrived. I saw Aaron and went to greet him. "Aaron, I'm so glad that you came over. Make yourself at home. Most of the people here work at the station. Grab yourself a beer or a drink, and we'll have food on the grill later." Aaron smiled at me and said "thanks so much for the invite. Is there anyone here I should pay attention to for a future job?" I cracked up and pointed him to Bailey. I explained what Bailey does, and said "he has numerous connections at the station and around town. He loves young and confident individuals." Aaron said "cool CJ, it's time to mingle!"
I said "give us your drink orders, and we just tapped a keg of Sierra Nevada pale ale on the patio! We have wine, alcohol, lemonade and sodas as well." Alex became the bartender inside, and Wally opened the living room sliding glass door to the patio. Carl, Zach, Nick and Angela followed Wally out for a beer. He grabbed some beer glasses and showed them all to the kegerator. I heard Carl say "this is truly awesome. A keg of beer with a beautiful view."
Gradually everyone migrated to the patio with their beverages. The fans were going and I had a music channel on the television. Bailey was looking around at the various sitting areas, and took a look around to the kegerator side. He came back to me and said "Jesus CJ, this patio is gigantic!" I said "I know Bailey, it's one of the reasons my parents bought this place a number of years ago." He said "you've mentioned your uncle and aunt to me, but that's the first time I heard you mention your parents CJ." I looked at him and said "my parents were killed in an automobile accident when I was 14. My uncle and aunt became my legal guardians and got me through high school and college. I'm here today because of them. My uncle, UD, suggested I keep the condo and use it as a rental. I'm glad I held onto it as it's now my official residence." Bailey looked at me and gave me a big hug. He said "I am so sorry CJ; I did not mean to pry." I looked at Bailey and said "you're fine. I can talk about my parents now without breaking up. Before I forget, remind me later after we eat about you meeting UD and his family. They are coming down in August, and have a special request of you." Bailey smiled and said "sure think CJ, whatever the request is we'll honor it for them. Do you mind if I get myself another drink?" I said "please make yourself at home Bailey and enjoy yourself."
Smaller conversations began and soon all seating areas were occupied on the patio just like I envisioned. I nudged Alex and he gave me a big wink. He said "no words necessary, but the patio is working out just like you planned my friend!" I looked over at Bailey, and Aaron was shaking his hand. I thought to myself "good, maybe Bailey can point Aaron to a sales or marketing job. I'm so glad Aaron took the opportunity to meet Bailey!"
I spoke up and said "everyone, let me lead us in a toast. I'm so thrilled that you were able to join this impromptu celebration today. It's been a wonderful 10 days at the station with all of you and I'm so honored to be working with such a fine set of individuals. A toast to all of us and Happy July 4th to everyone." Glass clinks went around and I then said "we'll start the grill up and have some hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixings ready to go. Please continue to make yourself at home and for anyone interested, I'll be happy to give you a tour of my condo." Alex said "I'll get started on the food CJ while you give the tour." I saw Wally follow Alex into the kitchen.
We started on the patio and I informed everyone of the changes that have been made so far. I received several comments on the kegerator side and the pub theme going. I said "the patio is a work in progress, and I plan to finish it off with some more furniture and some tropical plants. As you can see, I still have some free space out here. This is my favorite place in the condo though, and I enjoy watching the sunsets here thoroughly."
I took them all into the living and dining room indicating the changes made thus far. We then proceeded to the guest bedroom and my office. I pointed out the guest bathroom to all for their use. I then took everyone into the master suite area and told them about the changes made in it as well. The group went back out to the patio and conversations continued. Ross came up to me and said "CJ do you mind if I go pick up my wife and bring her back? I called her and our boys took off for the evening, so we're free to join you if you don't mind?" I said "please Ross, go and get your wife and change into some comfortable clothes." He replied "I will do that and will be back in about 30 minutes with Sheila."
Ross made his departure but informed all he was returning with his wife. Alex was going strong and enjoying his hosting duties. Angela wanted to help him out and he said "please sit back and enjoy yourself. Ask CJ, and he'll tell you I am the planning extraordinaire for the complex!" I grinned when I heard his comment and said to myself "look at what you have done with him in your time here. You're such an influencer CJ!"
Alex soon had food on the grill, and Wally had brought out plates and fixings to the dining table. He had placed the salads in large serving containers surrounded by ice to keep them cool. Peopled continued to fix themselves drinks or beer. I looked over to the kegerator and saw Jennifer, Nick, Zach and Carl in a game of cricket. Bailey had Angela cornered into a work conversation, and Ross and his wife joined us. I got them both a drink and said "the food is almost ready so help yourself." Ross said "CJ, do you mind if I show Sheila your bathrooms? We want to redo ours, and I want to show her your shower design." I said "please do. If you want to take any pictures for reference, please do so also."
Everyone soon grabbed a plate of food and the fun continued on into the late afternoon. I took some pictures of people to send to UD. My first party. He was right, I'm going to enjoy entertaining guests at my place.
Gradually, the early morning risers made their departure. Everyone gave me a hug and said "thank you for a wonderful afternoon". I got Alex and Wally together in the kitchen and said "thank you both for all of your help today. I really enjoyed myself, and I know everyone had a great time. The food was great, conversations went well and the patio was a hit! I'm not sure what time everyone will roll out, but are you two okay with reduced sleep tonight?" Alex said "I am fine. I have my bag packed and ready to go. All I need is my driver to get me to the airport." Wally smiled and said "got you covered you big stud."
Alex said "I'm going to start putting food away, you go back out and mingle with your guests." I did go back out on the patio and found Bailey, Aaron, Carl and Zach playing an intense game of cricket. Bailey was trash talking them and I could tell he was having a great time. I sat down at the high-top and said "can I get anyone some more food or any beverages?" Bailey said "I'll have one more if you don't mind and then I've had my limit for tonight." I said coming right up Bailey and the others said "we're going for one more beer CJ."
The evening continued and since it was just "the guys" left I decided to push the envelope and asked if anyone wanted and evening cigar? Bailey looked at me and said "hell yes, I'll have one if you join me?" I said "sure Bailey I can do that." Nick and Zach passed on the offer but Carl accepted. I got the humidor and Bailey, Carl, Alex, Wally, Aaron and I each took a cigar out and prepared them. Zach and Nick looked over and Nick said "what the fuck. Come on Zach, let's have one too." Alex said "try the smaller ones, they are vanilla scented and an easier smoke." Soon we were all puffing away on our cigars. Nick, Zach, Carl and Alex continued to play darts and Bailey, Aaron, Wally and I retired to the television area.
Bailey got comfortable and said "okay shoot CJ. Tell me about your family's visit coming up." I said "they will be here the week of July 31st. They have all requested a tour of the station and are hoping to watch a show live at the station?" He replied "not a problem at all. Let's make it a noon show." I said great. Now for the other shoe "My uncle, UD, owns 15 restaurants in the Cincinnati area. He is always pushing food on people and wants to make sure everyone is having a good time. When he visits the station, he asked me to see if you are agreeable for a luncheon for the entire staff which he will set up and have catered in?" Bailey said "that sounds very nice, but I'll set it up on the company's nickel." Wally said "I don't mean to be frank Bailey, but UD will be upset if you don't let him take charge on this. He is very protective of CJ and wants to do this for him and everyone at the station." Bailey said "okay then, we'll do it. Set everything up with Mindy to coordinate. Let's shoot for Wednesday of that week which is August 2nd. We'll introduce Trevor, Ronny and the new production assistants at the same time. This way I'll keep my promise to the staff about team lunches, and UD will be happy to! Everybody comes out a winner. Sound okay to you CJ?" I took a draw on my cigar and shook his hand. I said "Bailey thank you so much, and thanks for stopping by today. I hope I'm not surprising you too much by showing a different side of me today?" Bailey laughed and said "hell no CJ, this is great to see you like this. I was wondering when I was going to see the other side of you. You are a partier at heart also. Tell me, does Ronny come from the same mold?" I said "Yes, once Ronny and I get started we're tough to stop." Bailey smiled around his cigar, took a draw and said "good, I think Trevor has a wild streak as well. We'll have to work on him."
I reached over and gave Bailey a high-five. I said "thanks for giving me freedom on my remotes Bailey. I know I took a chance with the parasail but it felt right and the whole event was great for me! I hope the audience enjoyed it." Bailey smiled and said "Mindy had a number of calls yesterday afternoon with viewers saying how impressed they were with you attempting such and event on live television. I said it before and I'll say it again -- CJ, you're a natural and you're going to go places son! Congratulations on all of your success thus far, and keep up the great work for me!" Bailey turned to Aaron and said "okay Aaron, tell me your story and have you done any television work?" Aaron cracked up, took a draw on his cigar and shared his story with Bailey. Soon, Aaron and Bailey were in a discussion about careers, hobbies and multiple other topics. I saw Bailey taking a genuine interest in Aaron. I was pleased to see this as Aaron needs plenty of confidence in his life to battle against obstacles he will face in his future.
I went over to the keg and got Wally and I a beer refill. The cricket game continued on with everyone enjoying their cigars. Alex winked at me and gave me a thumbs up sign!
I felt so good and relaxed. As I returned to Wally, Aaron and Bailey, I told myself "CJ, you have done it! You're well underway to a fast-track career, you are surrounded by excellent friends, family and co-workers, and you're a damn sexy hunk with a gorgeous boyfriend."
My long-range forecast is on track and continues down a sunny, warm and optimistic future.
