The week has moved on: CJ is enjoying time with UD and his family, and the announcements are made concerning CJ and his friends at the station. The festivities begin, and continue throughout the weekend. All is well, until a shocking moment is shared between three of our story characters.

Against my better judgement, I stayed with the group for the entire karaoke competition. I know I'm going to regret it in the morning, but seeing UD and the girls having fun gives me so much joy. I don't know how many times I heard Jimmy scream "more Taylor songs!" as the singers continued through the night.
He finally got his chance to get up on stage and belted out a wonderful version of Taylor's "You Belong with Me". As soon as he finished, the crowd went nuts with everyone giving him a standing ovation. Mel got back on stage with him and said "Jimmy, that was a great performance. How old are you?" Jimmy being the ham that he is said "my name is Jimmy Peterson, and I'm eight years old." Once the crowd heard he was eight, another round of applause and cheers went through the bar for the young superstar.
As he made his way back to the table, he was greeted with hugs by so many at our table. He sat back down in between Fred and Toby and said "that was so much fun. I want to go up again!" The girls had signed up for "Story of my life" by One Direction, and took Jimmy back up with them when they were called to the stage. The four of them did an excellent job, with Laura and Jimmy belting out the chorus of the song like they had practiced it together so much before tonight's show.
There were so many at our table which made it up on stage. I wondered if Mel was `stacking the deck' and made sure most of our group made it on stage? As I looked around the room though, I saw many empty tables and reminded myself that it's off-season here at the beach.
Fred and Toby did a very nice job singing Islands in the stream'; Carl, Trev, Alex and Ronny put on a theatrical performance when they sang NSYNC's Bye bye bye'; UD shocked us all with a kick-ass version of Nancy Sinatra's These boots are made for walking'; Bailey, Aaron, Wally and I had a great time performing Don't stop believing' by Journey. The evening performances ended with Aaron and Bailey being called back up for a touching performance of `Shallow'. I have to say, I enjoyed their version more than I even enjoy the original version by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.
Mel thanked the crowd for another spectacular evening of Thursday night karaoke and told the crowd that he will be back shortly to announce the winners. Everyone has enjoyed themselves tremendously tonight and it was summed up very well by Jimmy when he said "Daddy this has been so much fun, and I want to come here every Thursday to sing out loud with the crowd."
I cracked up at my little friend, and then looked around the table. UD and the girls are all talking, laughing and engaged with others at the table. They look as though they're putting their troubles behind them for the evening. I put my hand on Wally's thigh, gave it a squeeze and whispered in his ear "I love you babe. Look at UD and the girls. They look very happy tonight." He whispered into my ear "I know sweetheart. I hope we can send them home in an uplifted spirit, and I love you more CM." I cracked up at him as he called me by my new pet name. I'm slowly getting used to it, and I can just hear others saying "CJ the CM" by the end of the day tomorrow.
Even though there were other performers during the evening, our group took all of the awards for the Thursday night contest. Mel announced "this is the first time I can remember that we have a tie in both of the single and group awards. For the single songs, the judges declared that Jimmy and Dean won for their versions of You belong to me' and These boots are made for walking'. Jimmy and Dean, come on up here and get your prizes. Jimmy was so excited and showed the same facial expression as he did on the science fair day. UD took him by the hand and they went up on stage together. Mel handed them each an envelope with $100.
After they left the stage, Mel continued on and said "I can't remember when we had such a variety of group singers as we did tonight. Again, the judges could not break a tie and have declared Bailey and Aaron along with the One Direction kids as the winners for the group contest tonight. Jimmy and Laura gave each other a hug as they both ran up on stage, followed by Maddie and Josie. Aaron and Bailey brought up the rear, and all six of them took a bow on the stage. Mel went up to Jimmy and said "how does it feel Jimmy to be named a winner in both contests tonight." Jimmy took the microphone from Mel and said "this has been such a great night, Mel. I enjoyed singing with everyone, and even though I can't be here every Thursday night, I'll be back the next time I don't have school on a Friday."
The crowd cracked up at Jimmy's comment, and all six of them walked off the stage together returning to our table. UD got up an gave Jimmy a hug, saying "Congratulations Jimmy! You're a wonderful singer. How does this sound to you? We take the winnings, and pay the bill here tonight? Whatever money we have left over, we'll buy some food for our pool party tomorrow. You can go to the store with me and help pick out the food we'll serve." Jimmy smiled at UD and said "that sounds great UD, and I'll be happy to help you at the store tomorrow. We can make cheeseburgers for everyone! Let me sleep in for a while though, as I'll probably be tired in the morning!" Everyone at the table cracked up at our Swiftie, and I said "hey everyone this has been such a fun evening. Wally and I are going to head out ahead of you since I need to get a couple of hours sleep before work! Have more fun tonight, and I'll see you all at the station tomorrow." Wally and I made our way around the table, giving hugs to everyone. When I hugged UD, I had a tough time getting out of his grip. He gave me a kiss and said "I love you CJ and thank you for a beautiful start to a wonderful weekend."
Less than ten minutes later, Wally and I were snuggled in our bed together. He gave me a kiss goodnight, spooned me and it wasn't even ten minutes later when I fell sound asleep.
When the alarm started off, I wanted to throw the alarm clock at the wall. I turned off the alarm and sat on the side of the bed for a few minutes. Wally started rubbing my shoulders and gave me a kiss on my neck. He said "are you okay baby, and do you need me to take you to the station this morning?" I smiled at him, leaned into him and gave him a passionate kiss. Once I broke the kiss, I said "I'll be fine Wally. A shower will wake me up, and it's going to be a fun day for everyone. You stay here and keep the breakfast crew under control." I gave my man another kiss, and headed for the shower.
Thank goodness it's Friday and I do not have to think about a suit and tie combination. I decided to go with my navy-blue polo along with khaki slacks and my comfortable loafers. Twenty minutes later, I walked out to the living area to find the naked love of my life waiting for me at the breakfast bar with a cup of coffee for me. I sat down beside him and he said "feeling more alive sweetheart?" I took a sip of coffee and said "yeah, I'm doing fine. I may wind down early tonight though. Then again, I might have so much adrenaline running through my system that I'll be up with everyone until we all decide to turn in for the night."
Just as I finished my statement, the patio door opened with UD and Alex walking in on us. UD chuckled and said "Alex talked me into drinking more beer and smoking a cigar with him. I'm going to turn in for a few hours' sleep now before I fix breakfast for everyone. Alex, remember to wake me at 7:00 and we'll get everything we need at Publix for breakfast." Alex smiled at him and said "I'll get you up and we'll tackle breakfast UD, don't worry. Get some good sleep." UD gave each of us a hug and proceeded to Ken's condo for some sleep.
I cracked up at Alex and said "did you twist his arm, or did he twist your arm chief?" He grinned at me and said "UD wanted more beer, and was not ready to go to bed yet once we returned. I decided to stay up with him as I felt he needed to talk, which he did. This weekend means so much to him CJ. We're doing a good thing for him and the girls, even though I may not survive through all of the planned activities." I cracked up at Alex and said "I'm right there with you brother!"
I finished my cup of coffee, and filled my travel mug to the rim with more. Alex and Wally both walked me to the door, gave me a hug and kiss and Alex said "we'll see you later this morning CJ. UD wants to be at the station by 10:30 to make sure lunch arrives in time and is set up properly to his high standards!" I cracked up and said "thanks you two for helping me out today. You two get some sleep and I'll see you later this morning.
I made it to the station and I'm in shock that I'm the last one here. This has not happened yet and Angela quickly said "looks like it was a late night at Mel's for you. Did everyone arrive safely? I'll help you with stories if you need me to this morning." I smiled at her and said "I'm tired this morning, but I feel my energy getting stronger as I drink more coffee. Everyone arrived safely, and we had so much fun at Mel's last night. I'll let you know where I'm at around 4:00 am, and if I need any help in finishing up."
I went over to an unoccupied desk across from Ross. He smiled at me and said "ah, I remember those days well my friend. When Sheila and I were first dating, I could stay up much later than I can now. I am also able to help you with stories, just let me know how you are proceeding. I took a drink of coffee and said "thanks Ross, I'll let you know."
Angela came around with a pot of coffee and refilled Ross's cup, as well as my mug. She said "how many people should I plan on sitting in the studio for the noon news?" I took another drink of coffee and said "well, it's the four Skinner's, three Peterson's, Wally and Alex .... so, nine in total. After our shows this morning, I'll share the news to you two about UD and Sally over breakfast. Long story short, they are divorcing and UD is in rough shape feeling his world is collapsing around him. He's so excited to see everyone here today, and will be here at 10:30 to make sure lunch arrives and is set up properly according to his high standards!" Both Angela and Ross cracked up laughing, with Ross saying "it will be nice to see him and the girls again. Don't worry CJ, we'll all help him out this weekend."
The morning shows will go fine. By the time we went on at 5:00 am, I'm feeling alive and ready to wake up our St Petersburg audience, just as I do every morning.
The breakfast crew turned out to be the usual suspects, minus Nick. I'm actually glad that Nick is not with us, as I feel more comfortable in sharing UD's and my recent experiences with my closer friends. As usual, Cecilia was bright-eyed and chipper as we walked in the door. She said "Buenos Dias everyone. Please take a seat where ever you like, and can I get you your usual drink orders?" We all acknowledged yes to Cecilia who began preparing our drink orders.
After she brought our drink orders, Cecilia took our food orders and proceeded into the kitchen to assist with the preparations. I shared the news with Jennifer about UD and Sally, just to bring her up to speed with what I had shared with the others earlier. I then went into the story how Sally informed UD in September about having an affair for over six years, and wants to move on with her life without him and the girls. I also told the three of them about my visit with Sally before leaving for Marco Island. I shed a few tears when I told them about Sally telling me that I had caused the beginning of problems for her and UD.
As I continued with my story, Angela grabbed my one hand, with Jennifer taking the other hand. Jennifer said "oh CJ, you were only 14 years old. What did she expect UD to do with you?" I replied "she wanted me to stay with my grandparents, which UD objected to." I wiped my eyes and continued on by saying "sorry everyone, when I think back to the cold manner in which she told me, I still have chills go up my spine. Once she returned to Cincinnati, she went into a vicious verbal attack on UD and the girls. She has left all of them now and wants UD to continue the care for them." Angela now had tears and said "those poor girls thinking everything is fine and then having an emotional bomb dropped on them. I cannot imagine how they're feeling"
I took a drink of my coffee and said "on the outside, everyone appears fine and UD is being strong for the girls. Inside, I know they're all troubled and still very disturbed by the way Sally handled everything. I just wanted you three to know what's going on, in case UD does not seem as upbeat to you this weekend. He appeared fine to everyone last night, but kept Alex out drinking with him until 2:00 this morning." Everyone laughed on that and Angela said "Alex is a tough guy, and he can handle it. I'm glad you have a strong support circle in place CJ so that they can help you uplift UD and the girls this weekend. They're all going to need your support and love as they proceed through this divorce. We'll do our part as well today and on Saturday for you." Ross smirked and said "my boys are coming with Sheila and I to the party. Wait until I tell them there will be two beautiful girls there that they can dance with. We're going through the horny teenage phase at my house now, so you'll have to help me watch them at the party tomorrow night. I can just see one of my boys convincing Maddie or Josie to slip outside of the recreation center for a midnight swim now!" All of us cracked up on Ross's comment and told him we'll be on the lookout as well for any unexplained teenage disappearances from the party.
After we returned to the newsroom, it definitely felt like a laid-back morning. Ross and I worked on changes for the noon show, while Angela and Jennifer talked about her stories for next week. Carl entered the newsroom and said "where's Bailey at?" I looked at him and said "I'm not sure, why?" Carl replied all I know is he called me in the main engineering room and told me I have a visitor coming to the newsroom."
I looked at the time and it's too early for UD to be here, so I was curious about who is coming to see Carl. Bailey walked in and said "Ah good, you're all here. Actually, I have a visitor for all of you. Please, come on in to the newsroom." Bailey stepped aside and all of us were surprised to see Jim Cantore with him. All of us approached Jim and I shook his hand while saying "Jim, it's great to see you here. How did the week finish up for you in the Keys and what brings you to St Petersburg?"
Angela introduced the rest of the news crew to Jim and he replied to me saying "our crews left the Keys on Wednesday. Prior to covering the storm, all of us had congregated in Orlando. Upon our return there, I decided to take some extra time and visit the Tampa Bay area. I knew the four of you may be busy, so I contacted Bailey to see if he minded if I drop by for a visit to the station. He extended an invite for me to come in today, as he said it's a big news day here." Ross, Bailey and the four of us continued talking to Jim while others in the newsroom worked on preparing for the noon show.
After a few minutes had passed, Jim said "I caught the morning shows today, and I have to tell all of you I enjoy the format. It's an interesting concept of three people versus four, and you three pull it off very well. Bailey, how is the audience receiving the format?" Bailey proudly said "it has been very well received Jim. In fact, you'll hear news later today about the expansion of the format. Can you stay with us today, hear our announcements and enjoy a fantastic lunch prepared by CJ's uncle?" Jim smiled and said "that sounds great. I'm taking a few days off, and checked into a beach hotel last night for some rest and relaxation."
Angela, Carl and I gave Jim a tour of the station. Mindy approached us and said "CJ, all of your other guests just arrived. The food is not here yet, so UD is in a tiff!" Angela smiled and said "CJ, I'll go take care of everyone and get the studio set up for ten visitors now. You keep Jim under wraps, and we'll introduce him to everyone else closer to the noon news. How does that sound to you?" I said "sounds good. Jim, let me show you our weather center and I'll go ahead with my noon updates while you watch me." Jim said "wow, you do your own updates? That is unheard of at my place. Somedays, it feels like I have too many assistants tripping over each other!" Angela and Carl laughed at Jim with Angela saying "we're a lean, mean operating machine here Jim. CJ is a jack of all trades in front of and behind the camera."
Jim was impressed with the character graphics system, as well as our switcher. I'm glad Carl stayed with us as he answered some technical questions for Jim. Mindy caught back up us closer to 11:00 and said "the food is here, and UD is relaxed now!" I cracked up at Mindy and said "hang in there, only 90 minutes to go for all of us before total relaxation settles over the entire station."
Carl and I took Jim to a few other places of interest around the station. At the end of the tour Jim looked at both of us and said "hey guys, thank you very much. This has been so informative and to be honest, I have not seen many of the technical operation centers at my place. I think people are intimidated by me, and often don't want to show or demonstrate things to me. I appreciate both of you treating me like a regular person and answering my questions today." Carl said "no problem, Jim, I'm glad you enjoyed it."
We decided to head to the news set. I forewarned Jim that he will have an instant crowd of fans encircle him for autographs and pictures. He cracked up and said "that's no problem, it will be my pleasure. I have to ask though, what is that incredible smell? It's getting stronger the closer we get to the news set." I cracked up and said "that is my uncles incredible barbecue sauce you are smelling. Prepare yourself for pulled pork, barbecue chicken and ribs. All the usual side dishes are also being served." Jim smiled at me and said "I cannot wait for lunch as I love a good barbecue."
I walked into the news set first. Jimmy and Laura have green shirts on, so Angela was showing them why they don't want to wear green when doing a news broadcast. Jimmy was laughing so loud as he viewed Laura and himself on a monitor with their upper torsos missing from the scene. I said "hi everyone, sorry I'm late. I see you're all in good hands with Angela though. Jimmy, do you understand the green screen yet, and how it works?" He looked at me and said "I think so CJ, but I need to do more studying on it. Angela is going to give me two websites to visit to get more information on how it works."
I stepped out of the way of Jim, and I saw Jimmy's jaw drop to the floor. He said "wow CJ! You did not tell me that Jim Cantore will be here today." Jimmy ran up to Jim and said "hi Mr. Cantore. I'm Jimmy Peterson and I'm eight years old. It's an honor to meet you, and you're the only other weather person I watch other than CJ." The crowd erupted in laughter, and I made introductions of everyone else in the group to Jim.
I saved UD for last and once I introduced them UD said "Mr. Cantore, I cannot tell you what an honor it is to meet you. I don't believe there was ever a day when my nephew was growing up that he missed your weather forecasts. You have been a big inspiration on his career, and I'm very happy to be here today telling you about it." Jim smiled and said "please, call me Jim. Thanks for sharing that with me, and the honor has been mine to meet CJ and his co-workers at Marco Island. You have a fine nephew Dean, and I can see great things happening for him in his future career. He's off to a wonderful start with only being in the field for five months now."
Bailey approached Jim and UD with Jennifer trailing behind him. Once Jim and UD had finished speaking Bailey looked at Jim and said "how do you feel about being on our noon show? If you don't want to, I understand but I'd really appreciate it if you sit down with Jennifer and CJ, and you three can discuss some items about hurricane Vince, and what you saw?" Jim smiled at Bailey and said "I'd love to do that for all of you. Please promise me no hard questions though!"
Everyone took their seats and Angela got Jennifer and Jim set up in our informal interview area. Ross kicked off the news and instead of going to our usual St Petersburg in 60 he informed the audience that we're doing a modified noon show today to accommodate a special guest. The camera shot went to Ross and I with Ross saying "CJ, tell us how the weather is looking for today and the weekend?" I smiled into the other camera and said "the weather is going to be absolutely beautiful for this afternoon and weekend. Everyone make outdoor plans and enjoy the mild temperatures with low humidity. I'll have the entire forecast for the bay region later in the show." Ross kicked back in and said "sounds good CJ. Your family picked a good weekend to visit you." As Ross said this, a camera scanned everyone sitting watching the show. They all took the cue from the floor manager and waived into the camera.
Ross and I kicked into stories and I completed the entire weather forecast. We went to a break, and I made my way to the interview area to join Jennifer and Jim.
Once we came back from the break, Jennifer began with "Good afternoon, everyone and as you heard at the top of the show, we're being joined by a special guest today. Please join me in welcoming Jim Cantore from The Weather Channel to WPHS today. Jim, it's wonderful to have you here with us today. Jim, CJ and I met while we were covering the Hurricane Vince story last week and he dropped by St Petersburg on his way back home."
Jim started in with "Jennifer, it's great to be here with you and CJ under much different circumstances than last week. I saw the video of you two when the roof collapsed around you and was concerned about your well-being." I chimed in with "Jim, I know I'm speaking on behalf of Jennifer and myself when I say that was the most terrifying moment of our lives. Have you ever had something like that happen to you while covering a hurricane?"
Jim responded by telling the audience about two of his experiences. After he finished his stories, Jennifer said "Jim, there is video being shown to the audience of what you encountered in the Keys after Hurricane Vince passed. Can you describe what you and other members of The Weather Channel found? Jim replied "as you can see in the video, there was great devastation on five of the middle-key islands. Marathon Key received extensive damage, and it will take quite a while to rebuild the utilities and infrastructure in the area. There were some major injuries to people, but luckily no fatalities were experienced in the Keys as a result of this storm. People took the evacuation orders seriously and kept the death toll low in Florida."
As Jim finished his comments, I said "Jim, we have two future meteorologists in the making in our studio audience here today. One of them has asked what the strength of Hurricane Vince was when the storm eye crossed over Marathon Key?" Jim smiled, looked at the audience and said "the storm was a very strong category four storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Luckily, the storm was a small hurricane compared to others we have had this century. It moved rapidly across the Keys, but still caused extensive damage."
As Jim was answering the question, Ross joined the three of us in the interview area. The camera pulled out showing the four of us and Ross said "unfortunately, our time with Jim has come to an end today. We thank Jim Cantore from The Weather Channel for joining us today. For all of us here at channel 2, thanks for joining us on this Friday afternoon and have a good weekend St Petersburg."
The floor director said cut and a round of applause went through the news set. Staff members were also clapping as they started filing in from to the entrances to the news set, and soon the set was filled with over 100 people ready to hear the announcements from Brad and Bailey. So many people came up to Jim, shook his hand and told him "Welcome to St Petersburg."
Brad and Bailey made their way to the news set where Ross and I usually sit. Once they were in place, Paul started in by saying "What a way to kick off a Friday afternoon meeting. I want to thank Jim Cantore for gracing us with his presence today as well as participating in an impromptu and excellent noon news segment." Jim stood up, waived at everyone as he received a hearty round of applause from the audience.
Paul continued on and said "I promise to keep this as short as possible, but Bailey and I have so much good news to pass on to everyone in this room today. I know the smell of UD's barbecue specialties are overwhelming us now from the annex, but I promise all of you the announcements will put us all in a tremendous festive mood for a great lunch. My thanks to UD and Mindy for coordinating the lunch today, which I know we're all going to enjoy." Again, applause went through the room with so many people anxious to hear what Paul and Bailey are going to say.
Once the room settled down, Paul said "First, let me start out with something that Bailey does not even know. I just received news this morning, and we'll receive the formal published report next week. I don't have all the ratings, but in the Nielsen Fall Television rating sweeps WPHS came in second for this year, compared to our fourth-place finish last year in the Tampa area market. I'm so proud of all of you and the hard work each of you has done to achieve this wonderful rating increase. Everyone, please give yourself a well-deserved applause and let's shoot for number one next year." In my corner of the news set, Jennifer and I gave each other a hug. Ross, joined in as well saying "sorry partner, a two place jump increase, largely due to us calls for a hug!" Jim shook all of our hands, as the remainder of the staff were sharing handshakes, hugs and cheers. I looked over to see my clan all standing and applauding wildly from their location.
The stage went back to Paul who said "and now, let me turn the show over to Bailey with announcements concerning the upcoming BANA awards. Jim leaned over to me and before he asked, I said "Bay Area News Awards'. He cracked up and said "thanks CJ."
Bailey stepped up and said "it gives me great pleasure to inform all of you that WPHS and its associates have been nominated in 27 categories. The BANA award nominees and winners will be recognized at the BANA Organization Annual Banquet which is held in early December. In order to make it through all 27 categories, please hold your applause until I finish them all." I scanned the room to find Ronny, and I caught him also scanning the room. Our sights connected, we smiled and he gave me a thumbs up before Bailey began the list.
It took Bailey over five minutes to make it through the nominations. Once he finished up, the crowd went nuts with applause, cheers, hugs, fist-bumps and other forms of friendly gestures. UD could not control his excitement as he ran to me, gave me a hug and said "my God CJ, seven nominations. That's incredible son, and I'm so proud of you." Jim was standing by us and shook my hand after UD finished the hug. Jim said "way to go CJ, an incredible honor that you should be very proud of." UD then said "I'm going to head into the annex to make sure everything is ready." I held UD back and said "wait UD, there is more news that will be shared with everyone."
Paul gave Bailey a break and made his retirement and promotion announcements. Paul ended his portion by saying that it is with great pride that I announce the promotion of Carl Marshall to the Chief Engineer Officer of WPHS." Everyone turned to Carl and began in a round of applause for him. Jim walked over to Carl, and shook his hand.
The show was turned back over to Bailey who said "please stay with me everyone and I promise to have you at lunch in ten minutes." Bailey went through his announcements about the resignations, retirements, the new morning news team, Josh joining us fulltime and Angela's promotion. He saved the evening news team for last and continued on by saying "our new evening news team will be Ross Harper, CJ Walters and Ronny Bradford. The co-anchor and weather model will be carried through to the evening broadcasts, and it gives me great pleasure to announce the promotion of CJ Walters to Chief Meteorologist for his outstanding work in covering both anchor and weather duties, as well as his perseverance in obtaining his AMS certification. CJ, thank you for your dedicated contributions to WPHS. It's hard to believe you only joined us in June, and look how far you have progressed since that day."
The crowd left lose with a thunderous round of applause for me, and UD was in tears once Bailey had finished. I felt as though he is going to squeeze me to death in a bear hug. He looked at me and said "I'm so proud of you and thank you for getting us here to join in your celebration. I love you CJ." I looked into UD's eyes and said "I love you also UD, and thank you for all of the support and love you have given me through the years. You have been a huge influence in my life to get me here today."
Paul finished off the meeting by saying "thanks everyone for attending this meeting and I hope you can all attend the WPHS station party tomorrow night at Gulfview Condo Complex Recreation Center. As you know, we're honoring our Hurricane Vince team and I hope we can entice Jim Cantore to join us as he also helped us in our storm coverage. Have a good afternoon, everyone and let's enjoy some good barbecue now from UD! Congratulations to all of you on the outstanding Nielsen rating increase, as well as all of the other announcements made today. Thanks everyone."
Bailey and Paul made their way to where UD, Jim and I were standing. Bailey said "Jim, as our guest of honor we'd like you to start the lunch line for us." Jim cracked up and said "I don't mind doing that at all Bailey. The delicious smell is overwhelming me, and I want to sample everything." UD cracked up and said "come on Jim, let me show you what we have today."
Ronny made his way over to me and said "okay brother, we're not at Maumee anymore." He gave me a hug as we were swarmed by my cousins, Alex, Wally, Jimmy, Fred and Toby. Jimmy got between Ronny and I and we lifted him up on our shoulders. He said "congratulations you two, this was so neat to watch today, and I'm very happy and proud for both of you." We both laughed at him and said "thanks Jimmy, we couldn't have done this without you!"
Lunch has gone very well. UD is at the top of his game entertaining everyone and making sure their food is good. I'm not sure how many requests he received throughout the afternoon for more bottles of barbecue sauce to be sent to the station. People even handed him money to help him cover the costs. I know he's enjoying today, and he's got a big-name fan now in Jim Cantore. Jim wants to come to Cincinnati yet this fall, and visit some of his restaurants. Jim even told him "You and I have to come up with a signature dish that I can brand for you while I'm in Cincinnati. We'll get the press there and make it a social event that everyone will want to attend in the tri-state area." All of the strokes on UD's ego today are another factor helping him to forget that has transpired to him and the girls in the last two weeks.
Even though there is no alcohol being served with lunch, it appears that everyone is drunk or high on happiness, including myself. The afternoon has been joyful for everyone, including Daniel and Paul who are departing us. Daniel took me aside for a few minutes and told me "Congratulations, CJ! The show is all yours now. I know that you and I have not been too interactive, but I'm a dinosaur here at this station. Prior to you and the other young bucks arriving, everyone at the station was so out for themselves, including myself. You and several others are fostering a new generation here. Be proud of what you're doing. You're an incredible self-starter with a vibrant and infectious personality. I know that you're going to go very far in your career. I'm jealous of you, and if I was starting all over again in the field, I definitely want to correct my attitude and replicate your skills, mannerisms and personality. I wish you all the best here at WPHS and wherever the future takes you."
As the afternoon continues, the evening news shift personnel begin drifting back to their station assignments for the evening news preparation. Eventually the crowd dispersed, and only a few of us were left milling around. Bailey said "hey UD, will this food all survive if we get it into refrigerators?" UD cracked up at him and said "yeah, everything will be fine Bailey, what are you thinking?" Bailey said "I think it's time to send Jimmy to the store with the winnings from last night. Let's buy plenty of scallops and we'll need some fixings for your barbecue sauce. For dinner tonight, we'll have your famous barbecue scallops, and all of these wonderful leftovers. How does that sound to everyone?"
Jim got a big smile on his face, pulled out his wallet and said "let me help with the contribution to the party. Barbecue scallops sound like something I don't want to miss, if you don't mind me crashing your party tonight?" Everyone cracked up at him and I said "it wouldn't be a Friday happy hour without you Jim, and you're more than welcome to join us."
With our plan set, the food was gathered up and loaded into vehicles. Fred, Toby, Jimmy and UD went to Publix, while Angela, Jennifer, Ross, Josh and several others went to the residences to change into swimwear and casual evening ware. I took Jim back to his hotel which turned out to be The Don Cesar. He retrieved a few items, and we headed to the condo. Several of the gang had beat us back, and began mixing up coolers of Wally's sunset pleasure, some blueberry gin and tonic, and the ever-popular vodka and lemonade. Carl and Trev also loaded up a cooler of bottled beer in case anyone wanted that as their refreshment. Within the next hour, we had one of our biggest happy hours in progress around the pool.
The happy hour eventually moved to the party patio. UD did not even ask, but started grilling his barbecue scallops. The smell quickly spread throughout the patio, while Alex and Wally were reheating the lunch leftovers. The food was spread out on the patio table, and soon we had a patio and condo full of people feasting on delicious food. It turned out to be a fun afternoon and evening, that I don't believe anyone wanted to see end.
The party ended at a reasonable hour, with all knowing that in less than 18 hours we'll be gathering at the recreation center for part two of our weekend celebration.
Our group split up on Saturday with Jimmy and my cousins leading a number of people to the beach. The remainder of us stayed around the condo complex, enjoying the serenity of the pool area. Wally and I stayed behind at the condo with UD. This worked perfectly into my plan, as my special surprise for UD is due to arrive early prior to the party tonight.
Around 12:30 pm, I saw UD's surprise approaching the pool. His face was hidden by a large brim of his straw hat. As he got closer, UD jumped out of his chair and said "is that Denny?" I got next to UD, put my arm around his shoulder and said "it sure is UD. After he gets settled, why don't you and him go up and enjoy some time together? You can use our bedroom, or if you're feeling adventurous, Carl and Trev left the playroom open for you two."
UD chuckled, and ran to Denny giving him a big hug and kiss. He took Denny's hat off of him and said "it's so wonderful to see you, Denny. How long can you stay with us this weekend?" Denny flashed his bright smile to UD and said "well, I heard you're going to be here until Monday afternoon so I took vacation, and don't have to be back to work until Tuesday morning." UD ruffled his hair, gave him another kiss and said "come on, let's go say hello to everyone here. After that, let's you and I go get reacquainted if that sounds okay to you?" Denny grabbed his hand and said "sounds great. Let's make this a quick hello, and get down to business Daddy!"
UD and Denny disappeared, while the rest of us enjoyed the pool area. Wally and I split our time between floating on rafts or noodles in the pool, and enjoying pleasant conversation with others at a poolside table. The afternoon weather is so spectacular and it's going to be hard to leave the scene, even for another blowout party.
Later in the afternoon, the caterers, bar staff and Mel with his karaoke setup arrived to begin preparations for the party. Bailey and Aaron took charge in coordinating everything while the remainder of us continued our Saturday afternoon frolics around the pool.
The beach crowd arrived back to the condo just before 4:00 pm and joined us at the pool. The timing worked out perfect, as UD and Denny had returned to the pool area about twenty minutes ahead of them. I did not have to answer any "where's dad" questions, which I was prepared to do if needed.
Eventually, all of us left the pool area and made our way back inside to get ready for the party. Wally and I took a long shower together which ended up in another one of our afternoon delight sessions. As always, he gives me so much pleasure and I know the smile I have on my face after we left the shower, will not disappear all night.
We decided not to coordinate outfits tonight so that UD will not give us any crap! I went with a pink polo and charcoal shorts, while Wally went with his usual white polo and navy shorts look. We both finished off our outfits with sandals, and headed down to the recreation center around 6:15 pm.
When we got to the center, the party is already in action with quite a few people already showing up. The turnout from the station is incredible, and I'm shocked with how many non-station friends showed up for the four of us. After we entered the door, people started to come up to the two of us thanking us for the invite. Tami, Kurt, Cecilia, Jorge and a number of Wally's construction crew were able to make it to the party. The crowd is a very unique combination, but everyone is mingling and enjoying themselves. Mel is playing smooth music now, but is ready to go with dance music and karaoke songs at a moment's notice.
Around 6:30 pm, Bailey got up on stage and welcomed everyone to the festivities. He said "I want to thank you all for attending tonight, as we celebrate the well-being and safe return of our friends and family: Angela, Jennifer, Carl and CJ. They did an incredible job of bringing us the Hurricane Vince story, and I'm so proud to have them back safe and sound where they belong." The crowd erupted in cheers and applause for the four of us, with the station personnel chanting "WPHS .... WPHS" which was very appropriate given the great news that we all received yesterday.
Bailey continued with "everyone enjoy yourself and have a great time this evening. Jim Cantore's in the building tonight and promises to lead us in line dances later." Everyone looked at Jim and began laughing. Jim held up his drink and replied "thanks Bailey. I'm going to drag you out there with me and we can lead the Electric Slide for everyone." A round of applause and cheers echoed through the room after Jim finished his statement.
Bailey finished with "The bar is ready to go for your beverage pleasure and we have plenty of delicious food for everyone. Besides the electric slide later, Mel is also ready to do a round of karaoke if we're up for it. Everyone have a great time tonight, celebrate our guests of honor and enjoy yourselves!"
Wally and I mingled around the crowd. I received so many hugs, handshakes and congratulations on my well being and my wonderful news received yesterday. Just before 7:00 pm, I noticed two men enter the door. I recognized one as Mack Simmons, the fire chief from Marco Island. I assumed the other was his brother.
Angela, Jennifer and Carl also recognized Mack when he entered the room. We all went to him, welcomed him and I said "I'm so glad to see you here tonight. Even though this party is for the four of us, we want to recognize you later, if you don't mind, for all of the dedicated service that you have provided to Marco Island?" Mack cracked up and said "no, I don't mind but you don't have to do that. Let me have a few drinks first though, before you pull me up on stage." All four of us said "deal Mack", with Jennifer and Angela leading Mack and his brother Jacob to the bar area.
An hour later into the evening, and Angela took the lead in introducing Mack to the crowd. He received an extensive round of applause for his service to the Marco Island community. People followed up with numerous handshakes and hugs to Mack after Angela finished his introduction.
As the party went on, I continued to watch Mack and I cannot get over the resemblance of him and Wally. Other than the hair color, they are almost identical twins. I know a number of people also recognized this and asked me "are Wally and Mack related in any way?" I answered the question at least ten times saying "not that I know of."
The line dances and karaoke contests eventually started up and everyone is having a great time. I was pulled out on the floor numerous times to join in on line dances, which is not my favorite activity to do. I decided to be a good sport about it and had a good time with everyone involved.
Later in the evening, UD got me and my cousins up on the karaoke stage where we performed a rendition of "We are family" to the crowd's amusement. Once the song ended, all five of us got into a group hug where UD said "I love you all, and I'm so glad that we're here together tonight. We are family, and don't forget that moving forward!" After the group hug, I gave individual hugs to my cousins and UD. As he and I hugged, I whispered in his ear "thank you UD for everything you have done for me. Remember today and every day in the future, I'm here for you in whatever way you need me." He broke the hug, looked me in the eyes and said "I know that son, and I'm here for you as well. Thank you for helping me make it through this tough spot in my life. We can talk more later, but will you be upset if I tell you I want to relocate to St Petersburg with the girls, so that we can be closer to you?" I smiled at him and said "no, I will not be upset at all. Nothing will make me happier than the thought of that UD. Just promise me that if you and Denny get married, I will be your best man?" UD broke out in his thundering hearty laugh and he eventually said "you got a deal, CJ. Thanks for that laugh, you don't know how much I needed that, as well as all of your great news this weekend. I love you, my son!"
The party continued on with some people leaving before the midnight hour. I felt bad as I did not spend much time with Wally during the evening. He and I both enjoyed mingling throughout the crowd. Even though I enjoy our time together, I also realize we can hold our own and we don't need to be glued together every minute of the day.
Just after midnight, Fred, Toby and Jimmy approached me. Jimmy had fallen asleep at a table and Fred had picked him up and held him in his arms. Fred said "this little guy is exhausted. We hate to leave this great party, but he needs some good sleep." Just after Fred stopped talking Jimmy opened his eyes, looked at me, smiled and said "sorry CJ, but I feel really tired. I loved your parties this weekend, and thanks for inviting the three of us to them. I'll see you tomorrow, CJ." I grabbed Jimmy's hand, gave it a kiss and said "thank you for being at everything this weekend Jimmy. You get a good night's sleep and I'll see you tomorrow." I gave Fred and Toby each a hug, and escorted them to the door.
I looked around the room to see where Wally is at. I found him, talking to Mack near a table and chairs. I began walking to them and before I got there, Wally took a seat while holding something in his hand. As I got closer, I heard Mack saying "Wally, are you okay, what's wrong?" I heard this and quickly went to him putting my hands on his shoulders. He looked pale and I said "Wally, are you okay and are you feeling any pain in your body?" Wally replied saying "I'm fine, just give me a few minutes. CJ, will you get me a glass of water?"
I quickly retrieved a glass of water and went back to the two of them. As I returned, Mack is checking Wally's pulse and respiration. I handed the glass of water to Wally, and he took a large drink of it. I fell to my knees and said "sweetheart, do you need me to call the paramedics?" Wally shook his head no to me and again said "I just need a minute CJ to compose myself. I'm fine, just stay here with me."
I stood back up and noticed a picture of a man and woman in Wally's hand. I turned to Mack and said "are his vitals okay, and do you know what may have happened to him?" Mack said "we have talking about our families and I shared with Wally that I never knew my father. He was a construction worker building hotels on Marco Island when my mom met him years ago. After mom passed away, I found the picture along with several others of her and this man together. I'm not sure if this man in the picture is my father, but I carry it in my wallet as a remembrance to my mom. When I showed it to Wally, he became very silent and turned pale. He eventually sat down, and that's where you joined us CJ."
I got back down on my knees and said "Wally, what's wrong baby? Please talk to me sweetheart." By this time UD must have sense that something is wrong and joined the three of us. He asked "is everything okay with Wally, and do we need to call for help?"
Wally then looked at the three of us with tears rolling out of his eyes. He said "I'm fine everyone, just very shook up." He then looked at Mack directly and said "Mack, the man in this picture is my father."
I had never seen a picture of Wally's father. As I took it out of his hand, the facial features looked so similar to Wally and Mack. I quickly grabbed Wally's hand and said "Wally, do you need to get out of here for a while?" He nodded his head yes to me and said "yeah CJ, let's go out by the pool. Mack, please come with us as I think you and I should talk some more."
As I pulled Wally out of the chair, more people gathered noticed he is not up to himself. Alex came running to us and I said "Alex, just give us some space. Please tell everyone that Wally is fine and that Mack, Wally and I are going outside for some fresh air."
What an unexpected turn of events! All I can think about now is the well-being of my future husband and what this means for him and Mack moving forward.
