My Sister's Boyfriend -- Parts 4 and 5
Part 4 -- Dealing with it.
I was laying on my bed, fully dressed, with my shoes on and wearing a football helmet. I was prepared for the grim reaper himself to charge through my door.
What would my parents do? What could they do? How pissed would they be? I stuffed some clothes into my gym bag in case I had to leave.
My door was locked. It would give me warning before the ax fell. I waited. I heard a car enter the driveway. I heard two doors shut. There was a long silence. I heard footsteps on the stairs. I heard them march too my door. I heard them march past my door. It was Amy and she was going to her room.
I waited for almost 30 minutes but nothing happened. I took off the helmet, unlocked my door and stealthily ventured into the hallway. I could hear soft voices coming from down stairs and I could see a light seeping through the bottom of Amy's door.
I went over and knocked on her door. I waited. I knocked again. I waited some more. I was just about to leave when the door opened. I saw Amy's hand move and I was suddenly blinded by some liquid hitting my face followed by an intense sweet smell and a horrid burning sensation. She had doused me with some kind of perfume.
I was unable to open my eyes with the intense pain, I backed away. I used my hands to guide me along the wall back to my room. Once inside I was able to find my way into my bathroom and washed out my eyes. It took several minutes before I was able to finally look in the mirror. My eyes were shiny red and my eyes lids were puffed way out.
I knew that I couldn't go downstairs this way so I went back into my bedroom, locked my door, and laid down fully dressed. I had heard from Amy, but I hadn't heard from my parents. I felt like a prisoner awaiting my sentence.
At some point waiting, I fell asleep and woke when daylight shined on my face. I looked at my clock. It was 6:30. I looked around my room for signs of attempted forcible entry or espionage. I was paranoid beyond reason, but with good reason.
I climbed out of bed and made my way to the bathroom. I looked into the mirror. My eyes were normal but my eyelids were still red, but not puffed up. At least I could go to school.
I undressed and climbed into the shower. I only let the water pour out lightly so my hearing wouldn't be interfered with. I cleansed my body but I was unable to wash away the fear. Finished, I turned the water off and stood still to listen. Sooner or later, they would come.
I returned to the bedroom. The silence was deafening. I dressed slowly trying to delay the inevitable. At 7 am I was fully dressed and ready to face my fate or run away from home.
I unlocked my door and opened it slowly. I looked around. Not a creature was stirring, not even a, oh never mind.
I stepped quietly down the stairs and into the kitchen. I saw no one. The house seemed empty or this was an episode of the twilight zone. I walked over to the kitchen window and looked out into the driveway. There were no cars. My parents were gone.
A sudden blast scared the shit out of me. Another blast. A car horn. Oh Shit, I forgot, my friend Tony was giving me a ride to school today.
I grabbed my coat off the rack and ran outside. Tony's beat up black Grand Prix sat waiting near the curb. It wasn't the best looking or fastest car in the student lot, but it was his and it had a great sound system.
Tony and I are teammates in basketball. We've known each for 3 years and have become trusted buds. Tony and I have the same build, but Tony has an Italian nose that matches his Italian profile. He even has a wise guy accent.
Ritchie was riding shotgun. He looked small for his age and had a big crop of curly brown hair on top. He was a high energy kid who was always full of ideas and always had something to say. At times he was a loose canon prone to aggression against strangers who seemed to be in his way. He has been in more fights than I care to remember. But he was a great guy to have on your side. Ritchie's window was rolled down.
Ritchie: "Hey"
Me: "Hey"
Ritchie swung the door open and pulled his seat forward. I climbed in the back. Tony turned to say hi, but stopped.
Tony: "Geez man, what happened to you. You look like you've been
shot at, missed, shit at and hit."
I puffed out some air and then shook my head.
Ritchie: "Somebody had a bad weekend."
Me: "It was a great, up until the end."
Tony: "So what happened."
Me: "Rather not talk about it."
Tony gave me one last look before he headed out on the road. We listened to tunes on the way to school. Conversation was minimal.
When we reached the school, Tony pulled into the front driveway instead of the student parking lot. He pulled over at the front door.
Tony: "Ritchie, would you mind leaving us alone. We need to talk."
Ritchie: "No problem, catcha later."
Ritchie was off.
From Tony came more of a command than a suggestion. "Hop in the front seat."
I complied and Tony drive off down the driveway and onto the road.
Me: "What."
Tony: "So what's going on and don't give me none of this I don't want to
talk about it bullshit?"
Tony had the right to say what he said. Last year when his girlfriend was pregnant he made the arrangements for an abortion. They were both only 15. It was their choice. No one in school knew, not even her parents knew. But he told me. I was Tony's #1 bud for trust and important things and I trusted Tony. If I couldn't tell Tony, I would never be able to tell anyone. But before I could open my mouth, he started.
Tony: "Bet I can guess. We have the same friends and my sister knows
your sister. Let's see. Last week you were goo goo over something
or someone. You were out of it most of the week. You spent the
weekend at home, blowing me off and a bunch of other people.
Amy has a new boyfriend. And he spent the weekend at your house.
Last night Amy called my sister and said she broke up with the guy.
And you're a mess. Either you two committed a felony, which isn't
your style, or you two discovered that the railroad tracks go
both ways, if you know what I mean.
Tony looked at my face. It only took a second. It was obvious. My mouth was open in awe and my eyes were open wide.
Tony: "Yup, I hit the nail on the head didn't I? And since Amy broke up
with the dude, she must have caught you."
Me: "How the fuck did you do that?"
Tony: "Hey, now you know why they made me team captain."
Guess I looked kind of sheepish. I talked that way. "Are we still friends?"
Tony: "Oh come on man, do you think you're the only guy who ever crossed
the tracks? Do you think you're the only guy on the team who ever
crossed the tracks? It's not that rare you know."
Me: "You?"
Tony: "We're not talking about me today. Did Amy tell your parents?"
Me: "I don't know. I haven't seen them since. Amy threw some perfume
or something in my face when I tried to talk to her. I guess I
can't blame her."
Tony: "Well, that explains your eyes. You know if things get rough, you
can stay with me. It's just me and my mom and we got a big house."
It was as if the sun suddenly came out from behind a dark cloud. If the worst happened, I wasn't going to be alone. I wasn't going to be out on the street.
We talked more as we headed back to school. The more we talked the more the dark cloud seemed to dissipate. My life wasn't over.
We got back to school and blended in with our peers. My next big moment would come in a few hours when I met Bruce.
I watched the clock tick by. I was blowing all my classes. Last week and now today. Sooner or later I'd have to pay.
The bell rang. It was lunch. The classrooms emptied out. The hallways filled with hungry bored students. It was a Monday.
As I neared the cafeteria, I saw Bruce hanging out by the door waiting for me.
ME: "Hi"
Bruce: "Hi. Why don't we go outside."
The nearest exit was on the other side of the cafeteria. We walked across the floor and past a table with my team mates.
Ritchie: "Hey man sit down."
Me: "Sorry, umm, checking on some concert tickets."
We walked on past. I thought I heard a semi-familiar voice say, "I think he's doing drugs."
We walked out the door and started walking toward the baseball practice fields.
Bruce: "I'm sure you know that Amy dumped me. What happened?"
Me: "She got suspicious and turned my web cam on. She saw everything."
Bruce: "Holy Fuck."
We walked in silence for a few minutes.
Me: "So what happens now?
Bruce: "I don't know. I don't know what would happen if my parents found
out."
Me: "Yeah, I Know. I talked to Tony. He offered me a place in case they
throw me out."
Bruce: "You told Tony! How could you?"
Me: "I can trust him. I can trust him with my life."
Bruce calmed back down and we continued to walk.
Bruce: "So you really think that they may throw you out?
Me: "I don't know what they would do."
Bruce: "And what about Amy, she's like a time bomb waiting to blow."
Me: "So what do you want to do."
Bruce: "I think we should cool it, don't you? Maybe we shouldn't see
each other for a little while. Let people cool off."
I couldn't believe what I had just heard. I was counting on Bruce to help me get through this. I didn't want to hear anymore. I actually felt a stabbing pain in my chest. I just started walking away, toward the woods behind the school. The woods offered short cuts to the city. I think I heard Bruce call my name, but I wasn't listening. As far as I was concerned it was over. I had never loved and lost anyone before. I had never loved anyone before.
My eyes filled with tears. I tried to blink through them but they continued to pour. I wiped my eyes with the cuff of my shirt sleeve and then the other sleeve. The woods absorbed me.
I walked for hours. It was the loneliest time of my life. I lost my sister and a boyfriend in less than 24 hours. And soon I would find out the verdict from my parents.
I wandered home about 5:30. Both my parents cars were in the driveway. I walked into the kitchen. My father was sitting at the table. Even sitting you could tell my father was tall. He stands 6ft 3. He has a business man's look with very short hair parted on the left, clean shaven, dress shirt and pants, always, and if he was standing, you could see his laced paten leather shoes.
My mom was standing at the kitchen counter. She is small, about 5 foot 5. She's thin, has small facial features and a squeaky voice. She's bubbly and is always busy.
Right now they both seemed stone cold.
Dad: "Shawn, can I talk to you for a minute."
My mother moved to the table and sat down. I took the position at the kitchen counter and remained standing. I braced myself and took a deep breath. My stomach rolled over.
Dad: "Your school called and said that you came in late and left without
permission. What happened?"
Me: "Huh."
Did I hear him correctly? Did he ask me about school? I wasn't prepared for this topic. I didn't know what to say. My mind went blank.
Dad: "Is there something bothering you?"
Me: "It's my stomach. It started bothering me this morning." I cranked up my lying machine. "I thought I could make it through school. I tried. But I couldn't. I went over to Tony's and fell asleep."
Dad: "Well next time, you call me at the office. I was very worried."
Me: "OK, I'm sorry."
Mom: "Do you know what happened to Amy and Bruce? They broke up.
It seemed that suddenly Bruce didn't want to spend time with Amy.
Did they have a fight?"
Me: "I don't know. I tried to talk to Amy, but she didn't say anything."
My brain was pinging back and forth between reality, fantasy and uncertainty. My stomach actually got sick. I ran for the downstairs bathroom. I really don't want to describe what happened in there. But when I came out I had two sympathetic parents hovering over me.
Mom: "Why don't you go upstairs and get into bed, I'll be up in a few minutes
to check your temperature.
As I climbed the stairs to my bedroom, I realized that a major crisis may have been averted. I guess Amy didn't want anyone to know that she lost her boyfriend to a guy. That's the only reason I could think of why she didn't tell our parents.
I climbed into bed, the day ended early.
For the next two days, I went about my life as if nothing happened. I stayed close to my friends from the moment school began until the last bell rang. The constant companionship helped me deal with the big hole that Bruce left in heart. Only at night when I laid in bed alone did it hurt.
It was late Wednesday night when I finished cruising the Internet and was about to logoff when..
Computer: "You've got mail"
I clicked the icon and the message opened. It was from Bruce. "I need to talk with you. Can we meet lunch tomorrow?"
I clicked on reply and type, "No. Sorry. I really am." and clicked send.
I logged off and went to bed. I cried myself to sleep.
Part 5. What are friends for?
Lunchtime Friday seemed more like a social gathering than a meal. Tony was sitting with his girlfriend Wanda. One of the most popular (in a good way) girls in school. She could easily be a model with her perfect skin and long flowing hair. She had a million dollar smile and the personality to match.
Also seated was Ritchie with his girlfriend Cynthia, a little spitfire just like Ritchie. Most of the other guys on the team were there with their girlfriends. I was the only solo at the table.
Tony: "Hey, we were just talking about tonight's party at Wanda's"
Me: "What party? Nobody told me."
Ritchie: "Well if you'd come down out of the clouds, you'd know about
this stuff."
Me: "So Wanda, I take it your parents aren't home?"
Wanda: "They're going to a show in New York city. They won't be back
until Sunday. It's not going to be big, just our group."
Me: "Cool"
Tony: "Hey, you got a minute."
Tony got up.
Me: "Yeah"
Tony: "Lets go outside"
Tony led me outside. We stopped only a few seconds from the door.
Tony: "Guess who I met last night."
Me: "Who?"
Tony: "Bruce. I ran into him at the mall. He's more of a mess than you are."
Me: "Hey, I'm alright."
Tony: "So you don't think about him?"
Me: "I didn't say that. I'm not over him. I just don't know
if seeing him is a good idea. I don't know if it's good for him.
I don't know if I want my friends to know."
Tony: "OK, I'm not going to push it. If I can help, let me know.
You want a ride tonight?"
Me: "Sure"
Tony: "Pick you up at 7"
Me: "Cool"
Time flies when you're looking forward to a party. We arrived just after seven. Tony entered first. Wanda was waiting to greet him. They hugged. They kissed and kissed.
Me: "Helllllloooo"
Wanda: "Shawn. Honey."
She hugged me and we exchanged pecks on the cheek.
I looked around and saw that everyone else had arrived including Ritchie and Cynthia.
Wanda offered me a beer. Beer and wine always flowed freely at Wanda's parties. Maybe that's why we have them here.
After 10 or 15 minutes, the party formed along its usual lines. Most of the guys hovered around the Xbox playing four man football. Most of the girls gathered together in chairs and recliners and talked, well, they probably talked about us.
And then there was Jamie and Dick. They have only been dating for a few weeks. They were making great use of the love seat to keep themselves warm.
The doorbell rang. I looked over to Wanda. She looked at Tony and gave him a head move. Tony dropped the controller and got up. Now nobody, but nobody gives up their turn at the controller during a party. Well, not unless its time to get laid.
Tony went and opened the door. Bruce walked in.
Bruce: "Hi Tony, hi Wanda."
Our eyes met. I think I was in shock. What the hell was Bruce doing here?
Cynthia: "Hi Bruce."
Bruce turned to Cynthia and nodded. I heard a few more greetings as Tony and Bruce made their way over to me. I was sitting on the sofa arm rest.
Tony: "Hey Shawn, look who's here."
Bruce: "Hi"
Me: "Hi."
I was momentarily embarrassed until I looked around the room. The guys were still playing the game and the girls were back at their discussion. Nobody seemed to be paying attention to us.
Tony: "I hope you don't mind. I invited Bruce."
I was flustered. I loved seeing Bruce but I was afraid of my worlds colliding.
Tony: "I think there's been a communication failure and I think you
should let Bruce explain. Why don't we go into the kitchen"
Me: "Why don't Bruce and I go in the kitchen."
Tony: "OK, but you have to promise me, that you'll hear Bruce out."
I looked around again. Everybody was minding their own business.
Me: "OK"
I led the way into the kitchen.
I chose to make the refrigerator my back and leaned. Bruce stood next to the kitchen table.
Me: "So how've you been?"
Bruce: "Shitty, how about you?"
I shrugged. "whatever"
Bruce: "look, I was trying to back away from you because I was afraid for you."
Me: "Afraid for me?"
Bruce: "Yeah, you have to live with Amy I don't. Being around you is just going
to make her pissed off all over again, and again."
Me: "So why are telling me this."
Bruce: "Because I didn't have the right to make that decision alone. And
because, well, we were just getting started. There's so much about you
I don't know and want to know.
Me: "You already know me down to my bare essentials."
Oops. I made a funny. I didn't mean to. Something happens to me when I'm alone with Bruce. I recovered and got serious.
Me: "Why did you go to Tony. That wasn't cool. You should have come to me."
Bruce: "I didn't go to Tony. Tony and Wanda showed up at my house last night.
Come to think of it, I'm not even sure how they knew where I lived."
Me: "When it comes to Tony, I've learned not to ask."
Bruce took a step toward me and stopped.
Bruce: "So what do you think."
I shrugged. Bruce took another step forward. He could have reached out and touched me if he wanted to. My heart was beating fast and loud. His eyes radiated warmth into mine. He moved closer. The tips of our noses touched. It was deliberate. He was playing. He tilted his head pressed his lips to mine slow and gentle. But only for a moment. He lifted his head and stared. I couldn't stop what was happening if I wanted to and I didn't want to.
I moved forward until my lips touched his. I tasted his lips and backed off. Bruce moved in and scooped me into his arms are pressed his mouth onto mine. I opened up for him and we tasted our tongues. I wrapped my hands around Bruce and held him as tightly as he was holding me. This was right. This was so right. This is what I wanted.
We unlocked our lips and
Oh Shit. I looked over Bruce's shoulder. Standing in the doorway were Tony, Ritchie, Wanda and Cynthia.
Bruce saw my alarm and turned.
Cynthia: "I think they make a nice couple.
Ritchie smiles and leads Cynthia back out the door.
Wanda points. "At the top of those stairs, first room on the right.
Nobody will bother you."
Tony winks at me and escorts Wanda out of the room.
Bruce: "You have some great friends."
Me: "We have some great friends."
Bruce takes me by the hand and walks me over to the stairs.
Bruce: "This is only the beginning."
we go upstairs.
The end of the story, the beginning of love.
