Natural Awakening by Chuck S

Chapter One – The Dream

"Ugh, it is entirely too early for this." I thought to myself as the alarm on my phone woke me from a deep sleep. I had been having a pleasant dream. I've had this same dream several times before, and it always leaves me with a feeling of nostalgia. The only problem is, that once I wake up, I can't remember the dream itself, only the feelings it imparts. Well, I suppose I should put that aside, and start my day.

My eyes slowly flutter open and I can see some early rays of sunlight beginning to shine through the blinds of my bedroom window. Though only dimly lit, I can see well enough to see around my room. It's a pretty standard teenage boy's room if you ask me. I have a desk with a computer, a dresser with a TV on top, closet, and some shelves with a few books and some trophies on them. There are some clothes strewn about on the floor, but not too messy. I generally try to keep my room fairly clean.

I slowly stretch with a small groan, and reach over to silence the alarm on my phone before turning on my bedside lamp. I sit up on the side of my bed and groggily rub my eyes. Generally, I'm not much of a morning person, but can get moving if I need to. I climbed out of bed, made my way to the closet door which has a mirror on it, and glance at my reflection.

Looking back at me was a 16-year-old boy, almost a man, wearing only a pair of blue plaid boxers. I'm just over six feet tall, I have dirty blonde hair that is about medium length and on the shaggy side. My eyes are a hazel green that changes color from time to time. I'm clean shaven with a square, masculine jaw line. I have well defined pecs and abs from years of playing sports and hitting the gym. I'm certainly not a body builder, just in good shape. I don't know that my opinion counts, but I think I have a cute butt, and my legs are strong and well muscled. I slide my boxers down and toss them into my hamper. Now I can see my neatly trimmed pubes that are a bit darker than my hair. Below that is my circumcised penis which is currently soft and about four inches long. When it's hard it grows to right at seven inches and is fairly thick.

I open my dresser and pull on some black compression boxers, some basketball shorts, and a tank top. After pulling on some socks and sliding on my running shoes, I open my bedroom door and head downstairs. Walking in to the kitchen, I see my mom sitting at the counter, drinking coffee and reading a book.

"Good morning Parker." She says cheerily, looking up from her book for a moment. "Going for a run this morning?"

"Morning Mom. Yeah, I'm going for a run. Have to be ready for football camp next week." I replied before heading out the door. I stopped to stretch for a few minutes before heading down the road at a nice jog. We live in an upper middle class neighborhood in the suburbs. Plenty of trees, green grass, and well kept yards. As I ran, I could feel the cool morning air flowing over my body as I began to sweat some.

I suppose this is about a good a time as any to tell you a bit more about myself, hearing about my jog can only be so entertaining. As my mom said, my name is Parker, and I'm sixteen years old. In two weeks I'll be starting my junior year of high school. Citrus Hills High School is a newer school, being only about eight years old, with fairly decent facilities, and a student body of about 2,000. I guess you could say that I'm fairly popular, but I like to think that I'm level headed. I'm in honors and AP classes, as well as on the football team. Last year I played for the JV team, and this year I'm moving up to the varsity team. I play as a wide receiver, being tall and fast really helps. Next week is football camp. Long days of intense practice before school starts through hot summer days. Anyway, that's the reason I'm up and running before any sane teenager would be awake on their summer vacation. I'm trying to get myself ready for camp.

There is one other thing you should know about me for now: I'm adopted. I don't particularly remember much of anything about my birth parents. All I know is that apparently when I was two, they were killed in some sort of accident. That's all I know, and all my adopted parents claim to know. I love my adopted parents, and they love me and take good care of me. As far as I'm concerned, they are my parents. Apparently, Mom wasn't able to have kids. She and Dad had to wait years before they were finally able to adopt a child, me. Since then they have raised me as their own.

When I was twelve they felt I was ready to know the truth about my past. It was only a matter of time before I realized that something was off. I have blonde hair, but neither of my parents, or anyone in their family has blonde hair. Sooner or later I would have figured it out. At first, the news really upset me. I felt like I was living a life that was a lie. The next couple months after they told me were a bit rough, but I finally realized that I was lucky to have a family that really cared for me and loved me. At one point, we had tried to find out more about my birth parents but really weren't at all successful. After that, my adoption never really came up again.

About half way through my jog, I came to one of the local parks. After running a lap around the park, I stopped at a water fountain to grab a drink. Pushing the button on the fountain only caused a small dribble of water to come out, certainly not enough to take a drink. For some reason, this really annoyed me. I had already run a couple of miles and was thirsty. This fountain had worked fine yesterday morning, but now almost nothing. In frustration, I smacked the side of the fountain. When I hit the fountain, the water pressure suddenly increased, turning the dribble into a geyser, soaking me. I released the button on the fountain and the water stopped. I have no idea what happened, all I know is I was still thirsty, but now I was also soaking wet. I let out a sigh, and just started walking toward home.

After walking a few blocks, I heard a car behind me. I didn't think much of it, as people would be heading to work. After another block, the sound was still there. I turned and saw a newer looking SUV park at the curb just a couple houses away from me. The doors flew open and four guys wearing ski masks jumped out and came running toward me. I had no idea what the hell was going on, so I turned and ran for it. About three blocks later I turned and looked behind me to see that only three of the guys were chasing me now, and they were about half a block behind me, and falling further behind. Turning around, I slammed into the SUV that had pulled in front of me, blocking my path while I wasn't looking. I fell backward, landing on my back. Before I could get up, the three guys had caught up and were trying to pin me down.

After the water fountain incident, I really wasn't in a great mood. I don't know who these guys are, but I'm going to put up one hell of a fight. Unfortunately, the three guys were doing a pretty good job of pinning me down. With all my strength, I attempted to get my right arm free. The guy that had been holding my right arm flew about five or six feet into the yard next to me. I know I'm pretty strong, but something weird was going on. I can't throw someone several feet through the air, but now isn't the time to think about that. Now for the next guy.

"Whoa Park, take it easy man. It's just a joke." One of the masked guys said. I instantly recognized the voice as one of my best friends, Grant. They let me go, and I got to my feet.

"What the hell man?" I asked still somewhat heatedly.

"Dude, we're sorry. It was just meant to be a joke." Grant said, removing his mask along with the other three guys, Nick, Mike, and Zach. For whatever reason, my four best friends, who are also all on the football team, decided to play a prank on me this morning.

"Sorry man. I finally got a car yesterday, and thought it would be funny to mess with you." Zach said, somewhat dejectedly. "Anyway, how the hell did you toss Mike like a rag doll?"

"I don't know. Adrenaline I guess." I answered, still unsure of how it happened myself. "I didn't know who you were or what you were going to do. I thought I was fighting for my life."

"Yeah, I guess we didn't think of that." Mike said, rubbing his shoulder where he had landed.

"Damn man, you have really gotten faster." Nick said with a laugh. "We couldn't even get close to you. You are going to kill on the field this year. Have you timed your forty recently?"

"I had my dad clock it about a week ago."

"And?"

"Came in right around 4.3" I answered.

"WHAT?" they all said in unison.

"That's really fast Park. Like really, really fast." Grant said.

"I know it is. I'm not trying to make a big deal about it though. I have two more years of high school, no idea what I want to do in college, and really no idea what I want to do after that." I said.

"Well that's up to you Park." Zach said. "Anyway, check out my ride!"

We walked over to Zach's SUV and looked it over inside and out. Zach was really proud to have a car. Apparently, his parents got it for him for having good grades, and showing he was responsible around the house. I had my license, but no car. Would it be nice to have a car? Sure it would, but I really didn't need one. Especially since Grant, and now Zach had cars. We were almost always together anytime we went somewhere anyway.

"Why are you all wet Park?" Grant asked.

"Long story."

"Well, your wet ass isn't riding in my car." Zach said with a laugh.

"Guess I'll just have to walk then. Believe it or not, I was out jogging when I was assaulted by you hooligans."

"We'll see you later then Park." Nick said. They all piled back into the SUV and drove away with a wave, leaving me to finish up my morning jog.

About twenty minutes later I walked in the front door of my house. Mom was in the kitchen cooking breakfast, Dad was in the living room, watching the news before heading to work.

"Morning Bud, have a good run?" My dad asked.

"Not too bad. The guys tried to pull a fast one on me." I said. "Zach got a car and since I hadn't seen it, the tried to surprise me."

"Sounds like something they would do." He said with a chuckle.

"Breakfast will be finished in just a few minutes honey, you should have time to shower real quick." Mom said.

"Okay, thanks Mom." I said, heading up the stairs to my bedroom. I grabbed some clean clothes and walked across the hall to the bathroom for a quick shower. After showering and dressing, I went back down in to the kitchen to have breakfast.

Mom had fixed some sausage, eggs, and hashbrowns with buttered toast on the side. The three of us ate with idle chit chat here and there. Dad is a lawyer at a prestigious law firm that deals with cooperate law. Mom is a secretary for the head of the county's public works department. They both really love their jobs.

"Have a good day sweetie." Mom said as she walked out the door for work. Dad had already left a few minutes earlier. "See you this evening."

"Bye Mom." I said.

After closing and locking the door, I headed back up stairs to my room. I stripped down to my boxers and climbed back into my bed, feeling a bit tired from my morning run. A few minutes later I had fallen into a comfortable sleep.

I dreamt that I was an eagle soaring above a forested mountain range. I felt so free, so at ease. No worries, no cares. Just me, and the wind beneath my wings. My vision was sharp, I could see for miles, but pick up even the smallest movement. Ahead in the distance, I could see a small cabin nestled in a hollow. I landed in a nearby tree and watched the family that lived in the cabin as they worked outside of their home. They were happy, but there was something different about this family. Magic ran through their veins. I'm not sure how I knew, but this family had lived here for the past fourteen years. Something had happened that caused them to retreat into the mountains. There was a mother, father, one son of about twelve, and a daughter who was about 8. The daughter had been practicing magic as she tended to the garden. She willed some of the flowers to open and close their buds, but something distracted her. She looked up to a nearby tree and saw an eagle perched on a branch, watching her.

"Daddy, the eagle I told you about is back again!" She said, pointing.

The father followed his daughter's finger to the tree where he saw the eagle for the first time and gasped. This was no ordinary eagle. "After all of these years, can it be you?" He asked. "Is that you Parker?"

I woke with a start, drenched with sweat. I once again felt nostalgia for the family I had just seen. Except this time, I remembered the dream.
