Chapter 12

The Waiting Game

Kai looked at me in surprise.  "You'll do it?"

"Yeah.  You'll have to talk to Jordan about it though.  I don't want a big argument to start between all of us."  Even though I was speaking to Kai, my eyes would not avert from Tyler and the other boy.  Kai must've noticed as he too followed my gaze, then stood there staring at them.  I finally turned my attention back to him.

"Who is he?"

"Uh, that's Marcus."  Kai put a hand on my shoulder, "Maybe it's the wrong time to be asking you to do this for me."

"No, I'll do it.  I don't know why you want to take the chance though."

"I-I just need to know."  He looked down at the ground, "I'm in love with Jordan."  I just stood there, not knowing what to say.  To say that Kai was putting me in an awkward position was an understatement.  I could never imagine asking him to do the same thing for me.

"Are you sure you want me to do this?"  I asked.

"Yes.  I need to know that he feels the same about me completely.  If he still loves you... then I'll let him take some time and decide what he wants.  If he does return my feelings completely then I, uh, was thinking of doing something special for him."

I smiled at him, "Like what?"

He gave me a shy smile, "Something to solidify our relationship."  He paused, "I didn't think I could feel like this again after Tyler, but Jordan truly makes me happy.  I love everything about him... his smile, his voice, his laugh, his eyes..."

I laughed at him, "Okay, I get the point."  Some loud laughing came from over where Tyler was, and it caught my attention.  I looked over and saw this "Marcus", lean over and kiss the top of Tyler's head.  I don't know why it bothered me so much... I mean Tyler isn't mine anymore.  I started to walk straight for them.

"Blade, come on.. don't do something you'll regret."  Kai called out, but I just kept on going.  When I was a few feet in front of them I stopped and cleared my throat.  They looked up at me, startled.  I couldn't read the look on Tyler's face very well.  The only thing I could make out was the look of surprise.

"B-Blade... uh, what are you doing here?"  Tyler asked.  I didn't answer, just glared at Marcus.  Tyler noticed I wasn't going to answer anytime soon.  "Uh Marcus, this is Blade; Blade, this is Marcus."  Marcus stuck out his hand, obviously waiting for me to shake it.  I shot a look at Tyler, but he just gave me a pleading look.  I pushed back my pride and shook Marcus's hand.

"Nice to meet you, Blade.  I've heard a lot about you."  Marcus spoke with a raspy voice, and I guess he's one of those people who likes to have eye contact when speaking, as his eyes never left mine.

"Hmmm..  good or bad?"  I asked.

He smiled, "All good.  I'm surprised we haven't been introduced before.  Where have y'all been hidin' him?"  He asked Tyler.  I was almost taken aback by his slight southern accent.  Tyler just shrugged.  Marcus gave him a strange look, but let it go.

"Where are you from?"  I asked.

"Oh, I'm originally from Louisiana, but I've been here for about 7 years.  Hehe, I can't seem to fully shake mah accent."  I laughed at his pronunciation of 'my'.  "Hey now, come on, cut the ole southern boy a break here."

"It's cool, I like accents.  Of course, southern is second best ya know."

"Oh yeah?  Which is the best?"

"The Aussie accent of course."  He playfully smacked me on the arm.  I kept taking glances at Tyler and noticed he seemed very uncomfortable.

"Um, so Marcus, do you have a girlfriend?"  I decided I might as well jump in head first.  He looked at me as if he was trying to read my thoughts, then a small grin spread across his face.

"Why, you interested?"  Now it was my turn to be surprised.

"Uh, n-no.  I was just asking...."

He laughed at my uneasiness, "No, I don't have a girlfriend."  He looked at me then continued, "Or boyfriend.  I do have someone I've got my eye on at the moment though."  He tried not to make it obvious, but I saw his eyes avert to Tyler as he said that.

"Oh... uh, right.  Well, it was nice to meet you. I better be going."  I glanced at the still silent Tyler, "Goodbye, Tyler."  He muttered a half hearted goodbye, then I turned around and started on my way back down to where Jordan and Kai were.

When I got closer I could hear an argument.  I watched as Jordan stood up abruptly from the bench and stomped off.  I sped up to a light jog and stopped at the bench where Kai was sitting.  He looked up at me with tears in his eyes.  He didn't say anything, but nodded in the direction that Jordan took off in.  I gave him a quick hug, then took off after Jordan.  I saw him round a corner as I called out his name.  By the time I caught up to him, he was at a pay phone.  When I came up behind him, I noticed his hands were shaking so bad that he couldn't dial the number he was trying to dial.  I put my hand on his shoulder, then he broke down.  He started openly sobbing and I slowly eased him away from the phone.  I led him to a bench nearby.  It was a pretty secluded area, so I wasn't worried about anyone bothering us.  We sat down, and I put my arm around him, until he calmed down enough to speak.

"Jordan, what's wrong?"

He refused to look me in the eye, "Why is he doing this?"  I knew exactly what he meant when he said that.

"I guess it's his way of assuring he doesn't get hurt again."  I paused not really knowing what to say.  I decided to lighten the mood a little, "Heh, does the idea of going out on another date with me disgust you that much?"  A very short laugh came out through his crying.

"N-no.. but that's the problem.  If I knew that there was no chance that things were gonna change, then I wouldn't be making a big deal out of this.  My feelings for you finally started to subside when Kai and I got closer, and now he wants me to jump right back in and open up old wounds?"

"Jordan, I don't know what to say.  No one is forcing you to go out with me."

"No... I'm going to do it.. for Kai."  I smiled, now truly realizing how strong his feelings for Kai are.  "Blade, can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Do you have any feelings for me?"  I didn't expect him to be so direct with me, so I took a minute to think about his question.  "I don't really know.  I mean, I did.. I actually liked you a lot when we first went out.  I guess this date is going to test me as well.  With everything with Tyler, and then Joey jumping into the picture, I guess the connection we had was suppressed."

"That's what scares me.  I love Kai.. I honestly do.  Then there's you, my real first love.  I never got the chance with you that I wanted and now that Kai is opening up this opportunity and you've agreed to it, I'm afraid of what could happen.  I'm afraid that you and I are going to get that connection back, and Kai is going to get hurt."

"I don't want to hurt Kai either, but I guess we'll just have to see what happens.  Honestly, now that I think about it, I think you and I need to resolve whatever is between us.  I never gave you a fair chance and we both have unresolved feelings I think.  I guess we need to find out how we really feel about each other."    He nodded, but didn't really say anything after that.  "Well, what do you say we go up and get Kai.. he was really upset."

He sighed, "Okay, let's go."  I led the way back to the bench where we had left Kai.  The only problem was, he wasn't there.  I looked around, hoping to spot him, and was about to give up when I saw a lone figure sitting on the shore.  I pointed him out to Jordan, and he nodded, understanding that I was going to leave him to it.  He surprised me by suddenly wrapping his arms around me, giving me a soft hug.

I returned his gesture, and then he went off to talk to Kai.  I walked down the boardwalk towards where I parked my car.  Marcus and Tyler were playing some game, but they saw me as I passed.  Marcus gave me a friendly smile, while Tyler just gave me another of his unreadable looks.  I looked down at the ground and kept going on my way.  I really didn't know what to think about the situation.  If Tyler is going for Marcus, then who am I to stop him?  He deserves someone who isn't going to be a coward about who they really are, like me.  If our love really is true, then we'll find each other again.  I strolled along, watching the people as I passed.  I was just about to walk down the ramp to the parking lot when I stopped dead in my tracks.  My eyes were fixated on a group of teenagers goofing around in front of the Castle Arcade.  I squinted my eyes to make sure I wasn't seeing things, but it was definitely clear who was there.  There stood Carla, with a couple of guys with what looked like Phantom football jerseys on, but that wasn't what really startled me.  The blonde boy with a beautiful dark haired girl hanging off his arm was what caught my attention.  His face came into full view, and there was no doubt about it.. it was Matt.  He was laughing and joking around with one of the other guys, while the girl kept leaning over whispering something into his ear and planting kisses on his face.  A million things ran through my head.. that was, until I heard some laughter coming from the ramp.

I turned to see who was walking up, and when I did, my entire being dropped.  There  was Eric, heading up the ramp with a few guys laughing about something.  I quickly made my way down and met them half way.  If Eric sees Matt with that girl, it's going to break his heart.  "Hey, bro."

He looked up, startled a little bit, but then smiled widely, "Hey.  What are you doing here?"

"I met Kai and Jordan up here.  Actually I was just gonna head home, maybe pick something up to eat on the way."

"Oh, that's cool.  Well, I'll be home in a little while.  I'm gonna hang out here with my friends."  I looked them over quickly.. damn, Eric has good taste.  They were all around the same height.. I'd say between 5'7" and 5'9".  Eric noticed that I was looking at his friends, "Oh!  Hehe, sorry.  Blade, this is Jonas, Chris, and Dave."  He pointed them out as he named them off.  I have to say, they were all strikingly handsome in their own way.  They all said hello as they continued on their way up the ramp.  Before I realized how close we were to the top, Eric had already stopped in his tracks.  He almost caused his three friends and myself to run into him, but we all avoided him at the last second.  I knew right away he could see Matt, as the look on his face told me he was about to lose it right there.  He fought his emotions, as he didn't want to lose his composure in front of his friends, but he couldn't hold them back long.  A single tear escaped his right eye as he stared at Matt with that girl all over him.  The other boys looked at Eric, then to where he was looking at.  A confused look crossed their faces, but the one he called Jonas stepped up right away.

"What's wrong, Eric?"  He asked.  Eric just shook his head, not being able to say a word.  Jonas put an arm around Eric's shoulders to comfort him, and soon Chris and Dave did the same.  I gave them a small smile, happy that my brother had such caring friends.  Jonas pulled on Eric a little bit, trying to get him to start back down the ramp, but Eric just burst free from his grasp out of nowhere.  His tears were flowing freely as he started walking at a fast pace towards Matt.

When Eric came up behind him, he put a hand on Matt's shoulder and spun him around.  Matt looked startled to say the least.  Eric didn't even get a word out when one of the football players grabbed him by the collar and forcefully pushed him up against a pillar outside the arcade.  Sigh.. here we go.  I took off towards them as soon as the guy put his hands on Eric, but before I had gotten over there, Eric had reeled back and caught the guy in the eye with a hard right hand.  Seemingly, he had given the guy a hard kick to the balls as well.  He stumbled backwards, almost knocking down Matt's apparent girlfriend.  Before either of the other guys could get to Eric, I had stepped in front of him.  Jonas, Dave, and Chris arrived shortly after.

"I suggest you back off tough guys."  I said.

"What are you gonna do?"  The one boy asked.  He was probably around 6' 2", 220 lbs.  I could tell he was trying to use his size to intimidate me.

"Why don't you try me and find out."  I said with a daring gleam in my eyes.  He looked at his friend as his confidence wavered for a moment, but soon they both stepped forward.  The other one that Eric had flattened started to come back around, and he too stood by his two friends.  I just about laughed in their faces, "You three seriously think that you can take the five of us?"  I put my arms out, motioning to Jonas, Chris, Dave and Eric standing by me.

"I guess we'll see, won't we..."  With that they moved closer, and I was almost nose to nose with the big mouthed one.  He had a couple inches on me, but I've taken bigger guys than him.  The tension was thick, and things seemed like they were about to get physical when Matt jumped in.

"Back off guys."  He said.  The three football players just looked at him.

"We don't take orders from you, half pint."

"Then you'll have to fight six people instead of five."  Matt stood next to me as he spoke.  The guy with the swelling eye from earlier seemed to snap, as he just lunged at Eric.  As he tried to jump through us to get to him, I took a jump of my own and speared him to the ground.  He gasped for air, obviously having the wind knocked out of him from the impact.  I grabbed his arm and twisted it behind him, and he cried out in pain.

"Now, if you guys don't want your friend to be used like a human wishbone, then I suggest you back the fuck up."  They stood their ground though, not moving an inch.  To my surprise, Carla spoke up.

"Guys, let's just go."

"Shut up, Carla.  Mind your own business."

"Fine, it's your asses.  Remember what happened to Mark?"  They looked at her strangely then nodded, "Well, he's the one who did that do him."  She pointed at me as she spoke.  They both looked at me skeptically.

"I guess we'll have to pay him back then."  Carla sighed, and then started to walk away.  To say I wasn't expecting her to try and play peace keeper was an understatement.  The girl who was hanging all over Matt just minutes ago looked at Matt longingly, then turned on her heels and followed Carla.  The two goons started towards us again, and I just twisted their friend's arm harder.

"AHH!!!  Guys, back off.. please.. back off now!!"  He yelled out in pain.  If it was earlier, I'm sure this whole thing would've caused quite a scene, but it was pretty late, and most of the people had gone home by now.  The loud-mouthed guy started to speak, when a voice cut him off.

"Allan, Tyson, you best leave them alone."  The slight southern twinge couldn't be mistaken.  I turned my head to see Marcus approaching us with Tyler at his side.

"Stay out of this Marcus, it has nothing to do with you."  The loud mouth one, whom Marcus had called Tyson, spat out.

"See, that's where you're wrong.  You're messin' with my friend there."  He nodded at me, "Now, if you're messin' with mah friend, then you're messin' with me."

The boys just let out groans and backed away from us.  "Wait until Trevor hears about this.  You may be the captain, but Trevor is the real team leader."  He paused and seemingly just noticed Tyler, "What's this?  You a fag lover.. or wait.. maybe you're a fag too."  I don't know what happened in that moment, but Eric let out a loud scream and just snapped.  Before I knew what was happening he had charged at Tyson, chop blocking his knee.  The big guy went down and Eric pounced on him.  He just started laying into him.  His friend Allan, started to run over towards Eric, so I threw the guy I was holding onto to the ground and tried to intercept him.  I could tell I wasn't going to make it in time, so I yelled to Eric to get out of the way.  He didn't budge though.. just kept hammering Tyson.  As Allan was about to pounce on Eric, a fist solidly connected with his jaw.  He fell to the ground dazed, and when he looked up, a look of shock came over his face.  I think I had the same look on mine.  Tyler stood there, holding his hand, stinging from the impact it had made with Allan's jaw.  Marcus pulled Eric off Tyson finally.. I think that he actually let Eric take out his frustration on him before he decided to stop it.  I heard a yelp behind us, so I turned to see what had happened.  I saw Dave and Chris getting a couple of shots in on the boy I had left there.  They pretty much dragged him over and threw him at Allan who was the only one really capable of helping his friends.  Tyson eventually stood up.. and I was shocked by how bloody he was.  Obviously it was nothing serious, as he was up and coherent, but it was still a gruesome sight.  The three "tough" football players walked off with their tails between their legs so to speak.

"They won't bother y'all again.  I'll see to it."  Marcus said.

"Thanks... I didn't know you were captain of the football team."

"Yeah.  Hehe, too bad we suck so bad that we're not really worthy of being called a football team.  It's funny, we supposedly have one of the best quarterbacks in the state, but he's so busy worrying about his image, and torturing other people that he doesn't play worth shit."

"Yeah.. Uh, I don't know if you know about what happened at school with.. "  He cut me off.

"Tyler? Yeah, I know what happened.  It'll be okay, Trevor won't be getting near him as long as I'm around.. and you too of course."

I gave him a fake smile, "Yeah.. right.  Well, thanks for trying to help us out."  I looked around for Eric and saw him sitting on the ground leaning against a pillar.  I didn't expect to see Tyler with an arm around him, comforting him.  I walked over and overheard him.

"It's okay Eric... everything will be okay."  Tyler soothed, as he stroked Eric's hair.  Eric didn't seem to respond, just stared at the ground with tears running down his face.  Even though Eric wasn't saying anything, Tyler continued to keep telling him everything would be okay.  Tyler looked up and noticed me standing there.  He just nodded, then kissed the top of Eric's head, and stood up.  He started to walk past me, but I took a hold of his arm as he passed.  He looked into my eyes questioningly.  I struggled for the words to say, but he jumped in before I could speak.  "Not now... take care of him, he needs you now."  I gave him a weak smile, and let him go.

I watched as he walked over to Marcus and they walked away together.  I shrugged it off for the time being and sat down next to Eric.  "Eric, you okay?"  He didn't answer.  "Eric..."I said more forcefully, but still got no response from him.  I brought my hand up under his chin and lifted it, so his eyes would meet mine.  As soon as they did, I finally saw a look of recognition on his face.

"B-Blade..."  He started sobbing and buried himself in my arms.  I hugged him tight, and just rubbed his back, trying to soothe his tears.  After a few minutes, he seemed to be all cried out.  I slowly started to stand up, nudging Eric to stand up as well.  He never let go of me though, his arms stayed firmly wrapped around me.

"Come on bud, let's get you home."  I heard some arguing as Eric started to get his legs back under him.  I looked over to where it was coming from and saw Matt arguing with Jonas, Chris and Dave.

"Get out of my fucking way!  I have a right to talk to him!"  Matt yelled at them.

"You lost your right, Matt.  I don't know what you did, but you are obviously the reason Eric is hurting so bad."  Chris said.

"Look, what Chris said is right.  I don't know what you did you jackass, but Eric's hell cut at you over something.  So start walking, you aren't getting anywhere near him tonight."  I noticed Dave's sexy Australian accent for the first time as he spoke.

"You guys can't stop me.. he's my best friend, I need to talk to him."  Matt was determined.

"If we can't stop you, then his brother will."  Said Jonas.  Matt looked over at me, and I shook my head.  He knew he wasn't going to get in the final say with me, so he just looked down at the ground.  When he looked back up, I though I saw tears in his eyes.  When he yelled out, I could hear the waver in his voice.

"Eric, I'm sorry!  Please don't hate me..."  With that, he turned around and walked away.

The other three walked over to me and I told them all thanks, and I'd have Eric call them when he's feeling better.  They all said their goodbyes, and wished Eric well.  I led Eric down the ramp to my car.  I literally had to pry his arms from around me to get him in the car.  We drove home in silence, Eric just stared straight ahead, but he did grab my hand and held on to it the entire ride home.  We pulled into the driveway and walked into the house.  We went straight upstairs bypassing Eric's room.  He slowly stripped down to his boxers and got into my bed.  I did the same, and hopped in the other side.  He curled up next to me as soon as I laid down, and started crying again.  I just held him until he had cried himself to sleep.  I soon found myself drifting off as well, hoping to never have a long night like this again.

The rest of the week was rather strange.  Things seemed to be awkward with everyone.  Eric avoided Matt at all costs.  I tried to get him to at least talk to Matt, but he wouldn't hear of it.  It was nice having Eric hang out with me all week though.  It put me at ease as well, as I wasn't too sure that he was going to be able to avoid the guys we fought with.  Kai and Jordan while still hanging out together all the time, seemed to be a little distant towards each other.  I could see that they had made up, but there was a tension between them.  Then there's Tyler.  He pretty much stayed away from me all week.  I guess I hurt him more than I thought, but he won't let me get close enough to try and fix things.  He's always with Marcus, everywhere you turn, there's Marcus and Tyler.  Okay, so maybe I'm a little jealous of him.  He seemed like a nice guy, but the fact that he was on the football team with Trevor and those other homophobic jerks made me a little weary of his intentions.  After all, Trevor did say be careful that someone didn't steal Tyler from me.. it just seemed to be a little more than a coincidence to me.

On Friday Eric felt sick, so I cleared it with my mother for him to stay home.  I told her I was going to take a half day, and come home at 11 to check on Eric.  I went to practice with Joey like normal.  When we got there, it was loud as ever, with everyone seeming to be talking about one thing or another.  I was about to just shrug it off as everyone being way too awake for that early in the morning until I overheard Ben talking to Scott.

"Did you hear the rumors about Marcus Simmons?"  Ben asked Scott.

"Like what?"

"People have been saying he's gay too, and that he's dating Tyler."  The look on Scott's face must've matched my own, one of shock.  Marcus came out for Tyler?

"Are you kidding me?  Marcus is gay.. no way."  Scott said in disbelief.

"That's just what I've been hearing.  He has been hanging around with Tyler a lot lately.  It could be true."

"Yeah.. I guess you're right.  Wait until Trevor finds out.. he's going to lose it."

"I know.. that guy is such an asshole.  I bet you anything he turns on Marcus the moment he finds out."  I cut in at this point.

"Maybe he already knows."  Ben and Scott turned around, startled by my interruption.

"What do you mean?"  Asked Ben.

"Well, he made a comment to me while I was at work the other night.. he said I better watch out that some other guy doesn't steal Tyler away from me."

Ben looked at me funny, "But you're not gay... right?"  Scott snorted, then went back to putting on his equipment.  I didn't say anything, but Ben just kept staring at me.  "Are you?"

"Does it matter?"  I asked.

"Oh shit.. you are!"  He exclaimed.

I sighed, "Yeah, I am.  Keep it down will ya?" I looked at Scott who had turned his head to see what I would say to Ben, "Happy now, Scott?"  He just looked away and didn't say anything.

I started to walk away, when Ben grabbed me, trying to get me to stop, "Dude, why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't know how you would react."

"Even after I offered you my support before?  You still thought I would turn on you?"  He looked somewhat hurt that at the thought that I would think so little of him.

"Ben, I'm sorry, okay?  It's just hard for me... I didn't expect any of this to happen, ya know?"

"I understand.  I am here for you though, don't forget that."

"Thanks, Ben.  Um, say, are you in any of my brother Eric's classes?"

"Yeah, he's in my first and second period classes.  Why?"

"Do you think you could do me a big favor and get whatever homework he has from those classes?  He's out sick today, and I'm gonna go home at lunch to keep him company."

"Sure, not a problem.  I'll give it to you at lunch then."

"Thanks a lot."  I looked around as everyone was filing out onto the ice, "Well, I guess we better get moving."  Ben and I followed suit, and went out for practice.

Before I knew it, practice was over and I was off to first period.  I talked to Kai for awhile during class, but my mind was elsewhere.  I kept thinking over how easily I had just come out to Ben.  He was great about it; too bad no one else could be like him.  I guess if I choose who I come out to carefully, it'll ease me into it.  Then, for the first time since our falling out, my thoughts drifted to Tyler.  It was like a sudden wave of emotion flooded over me all at once.  My heart started aching, missing his presence.  In fact, I missed everything about him.  I must have been really out of it, because the next thing I remember was Kai shaking me.  I finally snapped out of my daze and looked up at him.

"Dude, you were totally spaced out.  Come on, it's time to go."  I looked around the room and noticed that almost everyone had left and Mr. Shatan was sitting at his desk looking at us strangely.  I slowly got up and slung my back pack over my shoulder.  Kai led the way and we headed to our next class.  "What was that back there?"

"Oh, nothing.  I just got caught up in my thoughts."

"You looked kind of sad.  Is everything alright?"

"I don't know.. it's just that.. it's just.."  I struggled with my words.

"You miss him."  I looked at him like he had grown a second head.  "What?"

"Are you a mind reader?"

"Hehe, no.  I just kinda figured your anger was going to subside at some point and you were gonna start missing him."

"Yeah.. it all just hit me at once.  I guess maybe him and Marcus hooking up brought it on."

"Wait.. say what?  Marcus and Tyler?  No way."

"That's what people are saying."

"Damn... who would've thought that our school was turning into a gay Mecca."  I laughed at him, but deep down I was still hurting.  "Blade, if you want him back then you have to go after him... you can just forget about the Jordan thing, I'll understand."

"No... I told you I'd do it and I will.  I'm just waiting for Jordan to tell me when.  Besides, Tyler will barely look at me let alone listen to what I have to say."

"He'll come around."

"And if he doesn't?"

"Then your friends will be here to comfort you.  Oh, and Jordan is going to talk to you about the date during lunch."

"Okay."  We arrived at our next class, so we ended our conversation there.

Second and third period went by in a breeze and soon enough I was about ready to bust out of school for the day.  Just have to see Ben and Jordan and then I'm out of here.  I went off to my locker to deposit my books, and Ben met me there.  He pulled out a couple sheets of paper and handed them to me.

"Here you go.  He got lucky, we didn't get much homework today."

"Thanks, man.  You're a great friend."

"Anytime.  Tell Eric I hope he feels better.  Later."  He headed off to lunch after that.  I was just finishing up at my locker when I felt a tap on my shoulder.  I turned around and was greeted by Jordan with a shy smile upon his face.  I smiled back at him as well.

"Hey there."  I said.

"Hey.  Um, I just wanted to talk to you about the uh, date."  He was so nervous talking about it.  It was really cute.

"Sure.  What did you have in mind?"

"Well, I thought maybe we could go to dinner for starters.  I'm not really sure what else you would want to do."

"Um, well when do you want to go out?"

"I was thinking tonight, maybe?"  He said it as if he was asking me.

"Why Jordan, are you asking me out?"  I teased.  He just blushed and smiled.  "Okay, so tonight we'll go out.  We'll just figure out where we want to go after dinner."

"Great.  So, I'll pick you up at 7 then, is that okay?"

"Yep, it's a date."  I smiled at him, and then he walked towards the cafeteria smiling as well.

I shut my locker and started towards the exit.  What I didn't expect to see was Marcus and Tyler standing there... Marcus with his arm around Tyler of course.  I tried not to make eye contact, but that idea was thrown out the window when Marcus stopped me as I was trying to get out the door.

"Hey, Blade."  I turned towards him tentatively.

"Hey."

"Where are you running off to so fast?"

"I'm going home so I can spend the rest of the day with Eric."

"Oh, what's wrong with him?"

"He's just not feeling well."  I was growing impatient and wanted to get out of there.  I looked at Tyler who for once was actually looking directly at me.  I didn't know what he was searching for.

"Well, tell him I hope he feels better.  Say, I'm going to have a party in a few weeks, and I wanted to know if you'd be up to coming."  As he said that, his arm squeezed Tyler to him a little more.  I don't think I visibly winced, but I must have given some sign of discomfort as Tyler looked away immediately.

"Yeah, sure.. uh, but I have to go now.  Talk to you later.  Bye, Tyler."  I didn't wait for a response, I just shot straight through the doors and out to my car.

Tyler followed me out though, and stopped me before I got to my car.

"Blade, is it true.. about you going out with Jordan?"

I sighed, "Yes."

"Oh.  Well, I hope uh, you have a good time."  He walked away, kind of sulking.

"Tyler?"

"Yeah?"

"It's not what you think.  Besides, does it matter?"  He gave me a hurt look.  "You have Marcus now right?  What does it matter what I do.  I fucked up, plain and simple.  Go be with someone who won't hurt you."  With that I turned and got in my car.

I don't know why, but tears started falling from my eyes as I drove home.  Just seeing Tyler with someone else.. someone that maybe really could be there for him hurt me a lot.  I should've been the one to be there for him, not Marcus.  I'm so fucking selfish.  I arrived home with those words playing over and over in my head.  I tried to shake off my somber mood for Eric's sake as I started to step inside, but stopped when another car pulled up in front of the house.  There were four guys in it, but I couldn't make out who they were.  One of the back passenger doors opened up and out stepped Matt.  He leaned into the driver's side window and must have told them to leave as they took off moments later.  Matt saw me and hesitantly walked towards the front door.  I closed the door and stepped completely back outside, not wanting Eric to hear us.

"I didn't come here to fight with him okay?  I just need to see him."  Matt said, looking down at his feet.

"And I should let you see him because...?'

"Because I need to.  Blade, please... I have to fix this."

"Matt, what's the one thing I told you not to do?"

He sighed, "Hurt Eric."

"Right, and what did you do?"

"I hurt him.  I'm sorry, but I can explain...."

"No, you don't owe me an explanation, just him.  All I want to know is one thing, answer me that and I'll let you in."

"Anything."

"How do you feel about Eric?  The truth."  A troubled look came over his face, as he seemed to be thinking it over.

"I love him."  He looked up into my eyes as he spoke.  The tears and the genuine emotion coming from his eyes told me that he was telling the truth.  He's afraid of who he is.

"But..."

"I'm scared.  Scared that someone will find out I like another boy and I'll end up like Tyler."  I visibly winced when he brought that up, "I'm afraid of the consequences, but if it means losing Eric, then I guess I'll have to be brave... for him."  A big smile spread across my face as I pulled him in for a hug.

"Thank you.  Eric means the world to me, and I just want to see him happy."  I released my grasp, "Come on, let's go inside."  I opened the door and went in with Matt following.

We both walked up the stairs, but I motioned for him to wait while I went into Eric's room.  I knocked, and then entered.  Eric was sleeping on his bed, with his stereo playing.  I walked over to the bed and sat down next to him.  He looks so peaceful in his sleep; it pains me to have to wake him up.  I shook him gently and whispered his name.

"Eric..."  It didn't take long before he started to come to.  He stretched his arms and yawned as he slowly opened his eyes.  "Hey."  A sweet smile spread across his face.

"Good morning."  I laughed at him.

"Hehe, yeah, late morning.  How are you feeling?"

"I'm feeling a little better.  I think it's just exhaustion.  Too much stuff has happened lately and it's finally catching up to me."

"Yeah, I know.  Life's been hectic lately."  I paused, trying to think of a way to get Eric to agree to talk to Matt, "Eric, uh, I kind of have a favor to ask you."

"Okay, shoot."

"Do you think you could maybe talk to Matt?"  His demeanor changed completely at the mention of Matt's name.

"Why would you even ask me that?  You know how I feel about him, and after what he did the other night you expect me to just act like it didn't happen?"

"Eric, calm down, please."

"No, I won't calm down, I...."  He was cut off by his door opening.  Matt slowly stepped inside, obviously having been listening outside.  The tears on his face said it all.  I looked at Eric, who's hostile attitude seemed to soften when he actually saw Matt there crying.  Eric just looked down at the bed, and I could almost feel the sadness in the room.  I stood up and walked towards the door.  I put a hand on Matt's shoulder and nudged him towards Eric.

"I'll be in my room if you guys need anything.  Be honest with each other.. no holding back this time."  Matt put his hand over mine and stopped me from leaving.

"Actually, I want you to be here."  I was surprised that Matt wanted me in there, so I looked at Eric who just nodded his approval.  I shut the door, then took a seat at Eric's computer and let them talk.

Matt walked over to Eric and sat down next to him.  "Eric, can you please look at me while I say what I have to say?"  Eric drew his head up slowly, revealing his now tear streaked face.  Matt gave a smile through his own tears.  He took Eric's hand and placed it in his.  "I made a huge mistake the other night.  I shouldn't have went out with Cindy and the others.  I-I just thought maybe if I went out with her, I would feel something for her and .."

Eric cut in, "You aren't making me feel any better here."  He started to pull his hand away, but Matt just tightened his grip.

"Wait, please.  I thought I could change how I am."  I could see that he had Eric's full attention now.  Matt put his other hand on top of their intertwined hands.  "I've given up trying to fight how I feel.  I love you Eric, and I want to be with you.  I don't care if it will be tough, because I'm willing do whatever it takes to be with you and make you happy.  That girl...she means nothing to me.  You mean everything to me."  The smile on Eric's face at that moment lit up the entire room.  He started sobbing, but this time it was because he was so happy.

"So, no more just messing around?"  Matt shook his head no.  Eric wrapped his arms around Matt, "I love you with all my heart."  I smiled at them, as they held each other in a sweet embrace.  I watched as Eric brought his lips up to meet Matt's and they kissed.  It was a kiss of reassurance, one that told each other this was for real.  I got up and silently crept out of the room, leaving the two lovebirds to themselves.

I plopped down on my bed and just relaxed.  A lot of things ran through my mind.  What I just witnessed was one of the sweetest things I've ever seen.  I'm so happy for Eric, but at the same time I'm feeling lonely.  My thoughts about Tyler from earlier came swooping back, and it almost made me want to cry.  How the fuck could I be so stupid?  I let him slip away.. I couldn't put my pride aside and forgive him.  He's better off without me, all I do is make him feel bad.  Then out of nowhere Jordan popped into my head.  Tonight could change everything around here.  I fucked up Jordan too, never giving him the chance he wanted with me.  He's too good for me, and he's crazy if he even considers choosing me over Kai.  I'm going to make the best out of tonight no matter what though.  I dosed off for a little while but was awakened by Eric jumping on my bed.  I just reached a hand up and knocked him over, causing him to tumble off the bed.

"Ow!  You asshole."  He yelped.

"Hehehe, that's what you get for waking me up."

"Well, I'm hungry."

"So?  You don't need to be breast fed you know."  I teased.

"Awww.. but you have such nice tits."  He snickered.  I threw a pillow at him.

"Hehe, I see someone's in much higher spirits."

"Couldn't be better.  I'm in love!  Hahahaha."  I gave him a strange look, but laughed at him as he jumped around the room.  I pulled myself up out of bed and stretched while hopping boy settled down.

"That's great bro.  Where is lover boy anyway?"

"He's sleeping in my bed."  I raised my eyebrows suggestively at him, "Not because of that!"

"Hehehe, just kidding.  So, what do you want to eat?"  I asked.

"Cream of sum yung guy."

"Chinese food it is, hehe.  And you can get that as a side order from some young guy in your room."  His face became flush at my implications.

"Okay, I'm gonna go work on my side order."  My jaw dropped, as he burst out laughing.  "Just kidding!"  He took off out of the room, still laughing hysterically.

I picked up the phone and ordered out some Chinese, then noticed the time.  Five o'clock already!  I must have slept longer than I thought.  I jumped on the internet to check out what Jordan and I could do tonight after dinner.  There were the obvious clubs, movies and whatnot, but I decided that I was going to take Jordan somewhere I've never taken someone on a date before.  By the time I had all the info I needed, the doorbell was ringing.  I shut down the computer and ran down the stairs with the money for the food.  I paid the young delivery guy and brought the food inside.  I grabbed some chopsticks out of the drawer and headed on up to Eric's room.  I knocked just in case something was going on in there.  Eric yelled come in, so I did so.  I walked over to the bed where Matt was laying, but Eric had obviously woken him up.  He gave me a bright smile as I set the food down.

"Enjoy, guys."  I handed them each chopsticks and turned around to leave.

"You're not going to eat?"  Eric asked.

"No, I'm going out to dinner with Jordan at 7."

"Say what?  What do you mean you're going to dinner with Jordan?"

"That's exactly what I mean, I'm going to dinner with Jordan."

"On a date?"

"Uh.. yeah."

"Okay then.. I've obviously missed something here.  What happened with Jordan and Kai?"

"It's a long story bro."

"I'm listening."

"Sigh... Kai wants me and Jordan to go out tonight to see if we still have feelings for each other."

"Riiight.. Here's an idea, why doesn't he just ask him?"

"I don't know.  He wants to make sure Jordan loves him and only him before he gives his heart away."

"And you're okay with this?"  Damn.. what is this 20 questions?

"I said I'd do it for him, and well, I think I need to know myself."

"Hmmm... one day you'll figure out what you want, Blade.  Maybe you'll realize what everyone else does."

"What's that?"

"You're 'one' is the one that hasn't left your heart since we got here.  Think about that.  Have fun on your date."  I nodded and walked out of the room.

Wow, he can be direct sometimes.  Maybe I really do need to open my eyes before it's too late.  I didn't have time to mull it over plus get ready for the date.  I jumped in the shower and got so fresh and so clean.  I brushed my teeth, put on my deodorant and cologne then went on the journey of picking out clothes.  The problem with California is it's always so damn hot.  I want to dress up a bit, and I can't do that in shorts and a T-shirt.  I picked out a pair of white pants and a silver-ish collared shirt.  I through some styling wax in my hair, in an attempt to keep it straight and combed it out.  By the time I had put my shoes on the doorbell was ringing again.  I quickly grabbed my velour blazer and headed down the stairs.  I opened the door to find Jordan standing there with a dozen baby blue roses in his hand.  I beamed at him.

"Hi."  He said shyly, "These are for you."

"Thanks, they're beautiful.  Let me go put these in some water and then we'll go okay?"  He nodded his head and smiled at how happy the roses made me.  I smiled all the way into the kitchen, where I grabbed a vase and filled it with water.  As I was putting the roses in the vase it dawned on me.  When I came home from the hospital after the encounter with Sean, there was a dozen baby blue roses here waiting for me.  The card didn't have a name and I never found out who sent them.  It was Jordan.  I felt bad now that I didn't think to get him something... sigh.. I really need to sharpen up my dating skills.

I walked back outside and shut the door behind me.  I took a moment to take him in.  He was wearing a pair of black pants and a red collared shirt.  Looked to be satin or some sort of flowing material like that.  He normally spiky hair was brushed back as well, bringing out his sparkling green eyes even more.

"Ready to go?"  He asked.

"Yup.  Lead the way."  We walked over to his car and got in.  He turned on the radio and we headed off to dinner.  The drive there wasn't what I expected.  I thought we would both be nervous, but in reality we were relaxed and just had a good time keeping each other's company.

Jordan pulled the car into the parking lot of a very ritzy looking restaurant called Valencio's.  He pulled the car to the front of the restaurant and got out.  He came around my side and opened my door for me, then gave me a hand to help me out.  I thanked him, then a bellhop came over to park the car.  Jordan must've seen my jaw drop a bit, because I wasn't used to this kind of thing.  We walked through the double doors and into the fanciest looking restaurant I had ever seen.  Crystal chandeliers everywhere, everyone dressed in formal wear, a huge dance floor... it was incredible.  Jordan smiled at me being in awe.

"How did you get into this place?"  I asked.

"Hehe, I come here a lot with my parents."  He left it at that when an Italian-looking man came over to greet us.

"Ah, Jordan, how good to see you again."

"Good to see you too, Valencio."

"Who is your friend?"

"This is Blade... hehe as you can see he's a little taken aback by all of this."  Jordan giggled.

"Yes, I see that.  Well gentleman, right this way."  He led us to a corner booth, in a kind of secluded spot.  It was a semi circle seat, so Jordan and I sat next to each other.  "May I start you off with something to drink?"

"Yes, I'll just have a glass of sparkling mineral water."  Jordan replied.

"And for you, sir?"

"I'll have the same please."  Valencio walked off to get our drinks, which gave Jordan and I some time to talk.

"You don't have to be so shy you know.  He's not going to bite you hehe."  Jordan teased.

I smiled at him, "I know.  I'm just adjusting.  I've never been to a high class restaurant like this before.  I mean, it looks like movie stars would come here or something."

Jordan started laughing, and I just gave him a strange look.  "Hehe, why are you looking at me like that?  I just thought it was funny you should say that, because there's a couple movie stars right over there."  He pointed to a booth on the opposite wall from us.  I looked closely and saw Hayden Christensen sitting with Samuel L. Jackson.

"D-dude!  Do you know who that is?!?!"  I burst out to him.  He busted out laughing at my excitement.

"Yes, I do.  Haha, you're cute when you get all excited."  I blushed and laughed, realizing what an idiot I must look like.

"Sorry.  Got a little to hyper there."

"It's okay, I did too when I saw my first celebrity here."

"Who did you see?"

"I saw Nick Carter."

"Wow.  Hehe this place is the best!"  I continued to stare over at Hayden.. damn.

"If you want I could take you over to meet him."  Jordan said.

"I wouldn't know what to say, dude."  Valencio came back with our water, bringing our conversation to a halt.

"There you go young ones.  Are you ready to order?"  I looked at Jordan and realized we hadn't even looked at the menus yet.

"Yes, I think."  He said.  He turned to me, "Do you like Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo?"

"Yeah."

"Okay then, we'll get the double sized portion."

"Very well, your food will be up shortly."  Valencio leaned over to take our menus, but Jordan leaned over as well and whispered something to him.  Valencio smiled and nodded, then went on his way.

"What did you say to him?"  I asked.

"Mmm, nothing."  The grin he was wearing didn't convince me too much.  "Hey, I have to use the bathroom, I'll be right back okay?"

"Sure."  Jordan got up and walked towards the front of the restaurant.  I picked up the desert menu and read it over.  I was startled out when I heard someone speak moments later.

"Hello."  I looked up from the menu and almost had a heart attack right there.  Hayden Christensen was standing in front of my table.. speaking to me!

"H-hi."  He smiled that trademark smile at me.

"May I sit down for a minute?"  He asked.  All I could do was nod.  "So I hear you're a fan."

"Yeah.  I love you.. you're movies I mean."  My face went beat red and I felt like I wanted to crawl under the table and hide.  He just laughed and took it in stride.

"Well, which ever you love is cool with me."  He winked at me as he spoke, "So, can I get you an autograph or something?"

"Um, if you could please."  He obviously had been expecting to sign some autographs as he pulled out a photo of himself.

"Who should I make this out to?"

"Oh, I'm sorry, I'm Blade."  He smiled and started writing.  He handed me the picture then stood up.  He motioned for me to stand up.. which I did nervously.  He extended his hand, which I grasped and shook firmly.  He surprised the hell out of me when he pulled me in for a hug.  I swear the smile on my face isn't going anywhere for the rest of the night.  "Wow.. uh, yeah.  Thanks Hayden."

"You're welcome.  Have a great night."  He smiled again and walked back to his table.  I heard snickering as I watched Hayden walk back to his table, so I looked to the waiter station and saw Jordan standing there watching me, laughing.  He walked back over to our table and sat back down.  I gave him a playful swat.

"You set that up!"  I exclaimed.

"Yeah.. Valencio pulled some strings for me.  I just want this to be the best date you've ever been on."

"Awww..."  I gushed at him.

We chatted for awhile before our food was brought out.  When I saw how big the double platter was my eyes almost popped out.  There is no way we're going to eat all of that.  Boy was I wrong!  Jordan could really put food away hehe.  He's so thin I never expected him to eat that much.  When there was probably a forkful left on the plate, we both went for it at the same time.

"Go ahead, you take it."  He said.  I smiled, and then picked it up with my fork, but instead of eating it, I brought the fork up to his mouth.  He opened up and I fed him the last of the fettucine.  We both smiled at each other.  It was truly one of the best times I've ever had.  Valencio arrived with the bill a few minutes later.

"Will this be going on your father's tab, Jordan?"

"No, I'm taking care of it."

"Okay then.  Bring it up when you're ready."  He went back to the front desk, to wait on more customers.  Jordan started to pull out his wallet, but I stopped him.

"I got it."

"No, I picked this place.  It's really expensive I don't expect you to pay for me."

"I want to.  You bought me those roses and brought me to this awesome place, it's the least I can do."  He reluctantly agreed.  I picked up the bill, looked at the total...and almost dropped it.  $52 for one meal!?!?  Grrrr.  Oh well.  We took the bill up to the desk, where I paid for it, then went back out to the car so we could be on our way.

Jordan threw me the keys, so I could drive us to where I had picked out.  We drove for about 15 minutes before curiosity got the best of him.

"So, where are we going?"

"You'll see."

"Tell me, tell me."  He bounced in his seat like a little kid.  We pulled up moments later, so I pointed to the building.

"There."  The Anaheim Pond.

"We're going to a hockey game?"

"Hehehe, no.  We are going ice skating.  Is that okay with you?"  I asked.

"Yep.. hehe you're gonna have to help me though."

"That's the plan formerly spiky one."  He snickered at me.

We walked into the arena and I paid for the admission and skate rentals.  There was a good amount of people there, but the Pond is absolutely huge, so there would be plenty of room on the ice.  Jordan and I laced up our skates and walked out into the arena.  The Zamboni had just pulled off the ice and the ice attendants were opening the doors as we got out there.  I stepped onto the ice and waited for Jordan.  He was tentative getting on, but eventually got both feet on the ice.  He held on to the boards for support as I skated beside him.  I took one quick lap around the ice and stopped quickly in front of Jordan spraying him with ice.  He feigned anger, but his laughter came through.  I eventually coaxed him away from the boards.  I showed him how to push off and how to bend to keep his balance, and soon enough he was gaining a little confidence in himself.  He did a full lap around the rink without the boards to support him.

"See, it's not that hard once you get the hang of it."

"Hehe, easy for you to say hockey boy."  He stuck his tongue out at me, then started skating away at a quickened pace.  I think he got a little too much confidence, because I knew he wasn't ready to try flying around the rink.  I quickly caught up to him, and luckily, I did.  He lost his balance and started to fall backwards, but I caught him in mid fall.  He looked up at me sheepishly, but he didn't want to stay still very long.  The music that was playing over the loudspeaker was loud and fast, but soon a slow string of songs started up.  It kind of kills your buzz, and makes you just glide around.  I noticed some couples holding hands, almost moonlight skating.  A young girl, maybe 14 years old came skating over to where Jordan and I were.

"Hi."  She said.  Jordan and I said hello, but continued skating.  "Um... I was wondering, if maybe you guys would skate with my friend and I for this song."  I looked at Jordan, who didn't seem to thrilled about the idea, so I decided to leave it up to him.

"What do you think Jordan?"

"I uh, don't skate that well.  I'd probably just end up making everyone fall anyway."

"That's okay, we'll just go slow."  This girl was persistent.

Jordan sighed, then reluctantly agreed.  The girl squealed and went to get her friend.  "I'd rather skate with a dog.. at least it won't yap my head off."  I laughed at his dismay.  The girl brought her friend over, and immediately grabbed Jordan's hand and pulled him along.  He gave me a pleading look as they went off.  The other girl was definitely more shy than her friend.  She was a kind of chubby girl, with dark curly hair.  I offered my hand and we skated around.  I watched the couples skating as we circled, seeing their happy faces, their care free attitudes.. it just made me feel out of place.  I came to a complete stop when I spotted a couple skate by us.  Not because I knew them, but because it was two guys, followed by two girls.  The girl I was skating with got impatient and took off on her own, as I stared in envy.  That's exactly what I was feeling watching them.  They were brave enough to be who they are, and not care what anyone else thinks.  It was an epiphany of sorts.  Jordan came skating up behind me, and plowed right into me.  We both went down to the ice.  I was angry at first until I realized it actually was Jordan and he had done it on purpose.  He was laughing his ass off, as if it was the funniest thing in the world.  Our eyes met, and the laughter turned to smiles.  I got up, then offered him my hand to help him up.  He took it and we skated around for another 20 minutes or so.  After that we decided to call it a night, and head home.

The car ride was spent just talking about our night, how much fun it was and what a great time we had.  I was really happy Jordan liked skating, and he knew how thrilled I was about dinner.  It really was just a perfect night.  We pulled up to my house and he parked in the driveway.  We got out of the car and just leaned up against it talking.

"So, um, this is it."  Said Jordan.

"Yeah."

"So what do you think?"

"About what?"  I asked.  After he didn't answer for a minute, I turned towards him and came nose to nose with him.  Slowly, he leaned in, and I met him halfway.  Our lips connected, and our tongues danced.  We continued the kiss for a few moments, then pulled away.  For some reason we both started laughing.

"Hehehe.. Wow," said Jordan.

"Yeah, Hehe."

"I didn't feel a thing."  He giggled.

"Me neither.  I guess we've both really moved on."

"Yeah, we have.  It's funny you know?  I didn't think I would ever get over you, but Kai swept me off my feet.  I know now."

"That's great, bud.  I had one of the best nights of my life, truly.  But, it was more like a date with a great friend.  It was just a lot of fun, but the spark isn't there."

"Exactly.  I'm glad we did this though, it gave us closure, and now we can move on with our lives.  I can't wait to tell Kai."  He beamed.

I smiled at him, but it was forced.  I think he noticed, but didn't really push it.  "I'm really happy for you Jordan.  You and Kai deserve the best, and I think you're getting it with each other."  He leaned over and hugged me.

"Thanks, Blade.  You'll always be my first love.  And don't worry, you'll be happy soon... you just have to show how much you care to him."  He whispered in my ear.  With that, he gave me a quick peck on the cheek and hopped back in his car.  He waved as he pulled out of the drive way and took off.

I watched him go, then went up to the front door.  I was on a post date high, and I didn't want the night to be over so quickly.  I unlocked the door and walked inside.  I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn't notice the person sitting on the couch.  My mother.

"Did you have fun with your little boyfriend?"  She asked with a sneer.

"He's not my boyfriend."  I said sternly.  I knew this was going to happen sooner or later.

"Oh really?  It sssure looked like it."  She stood up, stumbling around the room.

"Go to bed."

"I want yyyyou out of mmy house within a week."

"Whatever, mother.  Drink a little more."

"Don't you talk back to me, ffaggot."  I turned to her and shot her the dirtiest look.

"Fuck you."  I watched as she stumbled until she fell over onto the couch, and almost immediately passed out.  I went up the stairs to my room and got in bed.  The tears came hard as I lie there.  I drifted off not too long after.

An hour later.....

I was awakened by the urgent ringing of my cell phone.  I tried to focus on the caller ID, but my eyes wouldn't adjust.  I hit the talk button and answered groggily.

"Ahem.. Hello?"

"Blade, it's Kai."  His voice sounded strange.

"Kai?  What time is it?"

"Late.. you need to get dressed and meet me at the hospital."

"What?"  I said, still trying to shake the sleep away.

"Blade, you have to get over here now."

"What's going on?"

"There's been an accident."

Evil.. I know, hehe.  Well, sorry, but I had to end it like that guys and gals.  Who was in the accident?  Are they okay?  Stay tuned for the next episode of Never Too Far Away.  I want to thank everyone for making my site, The Jaded Edge a success.  Also, as usualy, big thanks to Nifty, without this forum for stories no one would know about this story.  Not much to say this time around, everyone take care and I hope to hear from y'all soon.  http://gayclub.utdallas.edu/jadededge
