New Zealand: The First Step. Part 1

By Jonnie Darko

Five hours, only five hours until his plane comes in. I can not wait. I have been pacing around for 2 hours. Man I am so excited. I last saw James about a year ago. I remember when I first met him. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I chose to do an exchange my senior year of high school. I took Spanish for 2 years but I didn't feel comfortable enough with my Spanish skills to be able to speak it for a year. I took the easy way out and chose to go to New Zealand. No I'm not a Lord of the Rings fan. Everything I had heard about it made it seem like a dream place and boy was I right.

Looking out the window of the plane I am in awe. It is so beautiful, so much different from all the corn fields in Iowa. Putting my book away I continue looking out the window.

"First time here?" says the girl sitting next to me. She looks to be a few years older than me.

"Yea," I replied. "I'm doing an exchange for six months"

"Oh really? Where are you staying?" she asks.

We were then interrupted by the pilot. "It is 12:30pm in Auckland, and a beautiful 20C (about 68F). We will be landing in 10 minutes."

I was getting so nervous. 10 minutes until I meet the family I will be living with for the next six months. I start packing my stuff, making sure I don't leave anything. As the plane pulls up to the gate I start getting nervous. All I know about this family is basic information. What they look like, how old they are, what they do for a living.

I think to my self, are they open-minded? What if they find out about me? What if they turn out to be extremely religious, or extremely radical?

"Hello? I asked you where you are staying" says the girl next to me, interrupting my train of thought

"Sorry about that," I replied. "I'll be in Auckland."

"Sweet, so will you be going to school at Kenton Boys School? Oh, by the way I am Megan."

"Cool I'm Jon." At this point we landed.

As we were pulling up to the gate we finished up our conversation and got our things together. The plane stopped and the lights came on, our cue we can leave. I picked up my back pack, stood up and took my bags from the overhead compartment. I said goodbye to Megan one last time and made my way off the plane.

I followed the pack of people off the plane. I was surrounded by people. How am I going to find my host parents? Just then I heard someone call me.

"Hey Jon, over here!" I turned around and looked. There, sure enough were the people in the picture, the Garners. I made my way over to them. As I made it past the people around me, the Garners came into clear view. When we were face to face I got a warm welcoming.

Even though we knew who each other were from photographs, we introduced each other. Mr. Garner, Graham, looked to be about 45, graying brown hair, and a little on the heavy side. Mrs. Garner, Joanna, seemed to be a little younger. I would guess 40-43. She had shoulder length brown hair, short and skinny. Lucas didn't seem to resemble either parent. He was cute. He was about 3, pretty tall, had curly blonde hair and green eyes. In a few years or so he will be stunning.

We headed down to the baggage claim. Lucas was telling me all about his friends and what we were going to do together for the next 6 months. I already knew the first thing I was going to do. Sleep. I hadn't slept at all on the plane. I don't see how it is at all possible with crying kids and turbulence during the entire trip. I give mad props to the people that do, if only I could. Anyways... we got my many bags and piled in the car.

When we arrived at the house I was given the royal tour. I was shown my room, smaller than the room I have back in Iowa, but boy, what a view!

I sat on my bed just looking out the window. The trees and mountains go on as far as the eyes can see. I still can't get over this view. The next thing I knew, I was being woken up for dinner. Since it is so nice and still warm we ate dinner outside. During dinner we talked more and got to know each other much better. Mrs. Garner is a teacher and Mr. Garner is an accountant. Lucas is 12 (almost 13 as he says).

While eating I was taking in all the surroundings. The scenery was amazing. Something caught my attention. I looked next door and saw the thing that would make this trip fantastic. He was about 5'7, short brown hair, blue eyes, and skinny. God he was beautiful. I mean, I though I was lucky to have a host brother as cute as Lucas but wow I was speechless. I hoped he would be going to the same school. I also hoped he was gay. Yes everyone. I, Jon Andrews am attracted to boys. I heard my name being called and was brought back to the real world from my dream-like state.

"Jon, do you have a girlfriend back home?" asked Mrs. Garner. Damn, what should I say? Should I tell them the truth? I ended up taking the easy way out. "No," I replied. "I haven't had the time." I looked back over next door but the kid was gone. When dinner was over I decided to call it a night and go up to bed, I knew what would fill my dreams that night.

The next day I awoke at about 12. I hate sleeping in so late because then it feels like the day is almost over. Hopefully I have adjusted to the jetlag. I spent the next few minutes taking everything in, my trip halfway across the world, my new family, the scenery and the hot boy next door. I was just about to get out of bed when I noticed my morning wood. I decided to take care of it. I pictured the boy next door, imagining him outside with his shirt off, sweat glistening on his beautiful chest, and then here in my room, slowly undressing. His smooth tan body starts shedding his clothes, as if he has just shed a layer of skin, until he is standing naked in front of me. God I want to be able to take him in me, be able to hold him and call him mine.

When I was done, I walked over and examined myself in the mirror.

I consider myself average, although I have been told I am cute (and yes it is someone other than my mother). I am tan 5'11, 140 lbs, sandy blonde hair and green eyes. I know I don't look like the typical Iowan. My Cali roots show through. And yes I am hung pretty well. (6.5, hey I didn't say I was huge.) I took a shower, got dressed and headed downstairs. "Ah good your up," Mrs. Garner said warmly. "Did you sleep well?"

"As far as I know, I was out like a lamp." I replied

"We are going out in about an hour to get you registered at your new school, and get you the supplies you need, so if you are hungry, you can grab something to eat before we leave."

I helped myself to some toast and Marmite. If I am in NZ I might as well eat like it. Unfortunately marmite was not what I was expecting and quickly scraped it off my toast and tongue. Very very salty. It was like licking one of those salt wheels gerbils have. I could still taste the marmite on the toast and in my mouth. Maybe I'll just stick to what I'm used to. So I made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. As I finished up my sandwich Mrs. Garner came in and we got ready to go. I was nervous and excited. I wonder how big this school is. Is it as big as mine in Iowa? We got into the car and drove towards my new school for the next year. A chapter in my life has just ended and a new one has begun.

Well here is the first chapter of New Zealand: First Step. I hope you enjoyed it. Please give me comments, let me know what you think. Did you like it? Hate it? Things I could do better? This is my first work of this kind and so feedback would be really great! Look for upcoming chapters soon!

Next: Chapter 2
