Chapter 3

Doug sat down on the rock next to Darren, then moved in close as he started to speak.

"We always should have been friends Darren." said Doug. "That's what I wanted when we first met back in elementary school. I can still remember how we use to get along then. As I became older though, my dad began preaching things at me. He was especially hateful when it came to gay people. He was always talking about what terrible people fags were. By the way, if that word hurts then I'm sorry, but those were my father's words. I didn't understand them at first, but he kept at me until it started to become a part of me too. Then I started to see some of the things he would talk about in you. Don't worry though, I never told him that for some reason."

"How could you have seen those things in me back then?" asked Darren. "I didn't even have the slightest idea that I might be gay then."

"It was mostly the way you only hung out around other boys." replied Doug. "I even caught you looking at boys in a way that none of the other boys did."

"If I was, I had no idea I was even doing it." said Darren. "At least not until about the eighth grade." Darren then smiled a sly smile for a brief moment.

"It was about the middle of the fifth grade when I started noticing that." said Doug. "Anyway, it was the kind of thing that my dad said was wrong, and that people like that should be hated. I really didn't believe him at first, but then I got started in Pee Wee football. It seemed like a lot of the guys I became friends with there were also told the same type of things by their dads, and most of them believed it without question. I know now that I should have talked to you about it, but instead I just started going along with all my friends. The older my friends got, the worse their opinions became of people like you. They even talked me into believing that people like you tricked other guys into being their friends so they could do things with them. I guess that's when the really bad stuff between us started. A part of me has always hated myself for doing those things to you, because we use to be friends. But it seemed like the people around me had talked another part of me into hating you because of what they said you were trying to do to me when we were younger."

"I just wanted to be your friend Doug." cried Darren. "I wasn't out to get into your pants back then, because I wouldn't have even known what to do then. By the time we had gotten older I would have respected you too much as a friend to do anything like that. I mean, I do have one or two friends from back then and we don't do anything like that because I want them to be my friends."

"I know that." said Doug with his head lowered. "I never said that me and my friends were very smart. Anyway, the fact that a small part of me still wanted to be your friend didn't help things much. When I was around my friends, which was almost all the time, I thought I had to make up for that small part of me or my friends would think there was something wrong with me. You know what's ironic though? There is something wrong with me. I've become someone that I can't even stand to look at anymore. I've done some horrible things to you, and I've never come clean about them until now. I just expected you to forgive me without giving you any reason to do so, and I don't even deserve to have you forgive me."

"Can I forgive you anyway Doug?" asked Darren.

"That's what I mean." said Doug. "You have a much kinder heart than I've ever allowed myself to have. I come clean to you and admit how horrible I've been, and you want to forgive me now. I wish I could be just a little bit like you Darren, then I might be able to like myself again." When Darren began to smile a wicked smile Doug continued, "You know what I mean! I don't think I'll turn gay just yet, but I just wish I could learn to like people without judging them. I hate my dad and friends for turning me into that type of person, but I promise you that I'm going to find some way to make it up to you. The bottom line is that I want to go home so bad that I feel like crying, but we may never get to do that. I need you to be my friend Darren, even if we do get off this island someday. This will be something that will be with us forever, and you are the only other person who will ever be able to understand what happened here. I want you to be my friend for the rest of our lives, and now I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks about it." Doug then stared at Darren's face as the boy thought about what Doug had said.

"You're going to need to get use to a few things then." said Darren. "I'm going to be as honest with you as you just were with me. First of all, seeing as how we haven't been friends in such a long time, I find you very attractive. I know you're not gay like me, but you are attractive and you're the only other person on this island. That means that I am naturally going to stare at you at times, especially when our underwear gives out. You're going to have to get use to that to the point where it won't be a problem."

"You can stare at me all you want if we can be friends." said Doug. "I promise that I'll never say anything else about it."

"Okay then," said Darren, "I'll hold you to that. Also, I'm the kind of person that needs to talk about his feelings at times. If we're on this island for a long time, those feeling are going to involve you. It's hard to say what I might say, but whatever I say it won't help if you freak out on me. That will probably only make things ten times worse."

"I understand that," said Doug, "and I promise I won't freak out on you no matter what you say."

"Finally," said Darren, "I want you to apologize for setting my hair on fire in the eighth grade. It looked okay after I got it cut, but it really hurt that you would do something like that."

Doug took Darren into a hug and said, "I'm so sorry I did that dude. That was the stupidest thing I've ever done, besides turning on you in the first place. I promise I'll never hurt you like that again. I also promise that if we ever get home you will be my absolute best friend, and if anyone doesn't like that then I don't need them around me."

"Thanks Doug." said Darren. "And I'm sorry too, because I didn't think what you might be going through. I didn't realize that everyone was playing with your head as much as they were. If I had, maybe things wouldn't have gotten so bad between us. I guess we both fucked up, didn't we?"

"Dude," replied Doug, "you have nothing to be sorry for. If I had been half as brave as you, none of this would have ever happened. I'm glad that you do understand though. I was so afraid that you wouldn't, but I should have known better than that. Would you be my best friend Darren? Please give me one last chance to not be a complete asshole."

"All I've ever wanted was to be your friend Doug." said Darren as he smiled and choked back a tear. "I would be so happy if we could be best friends. Right now though I'm so tired. What do you say we find a nice shady spot and see if we can get in a nap before the sun gets too high?"

"That sounds great my friend." said Doug.

Doug hopped up off the rock, then held his hand toward Darren to help him up. The two boys made their way back down to the beach. Then they headed off toward the ponds so they could get a drink and find a place to rest. Doug thought that they should be near the pond in case they had another run in with the ants. After napping for a few hours, Doug and Darren hopped into the pond to clean themselves off a little. Then they went back to the beach to work on their hut.

Doug was true to his word after the talk the boys had that morning. When he caught Darren looking at him he would smile and keep on doing what he was doing. This was much nicer as far as Darren was concerned. Darren would smile back and the two boys continued to work together very well. They worked together so well that by the end of the day their hut had everything except for a roof. As the sun was going down that evening the boys prepared to go to sleep for the night. With the floor now in place Darren was able to get into his hammock easily, which made Darren feel relieved. Darren now thought that he might actually be falling in love with Doug, and he didn't want something like that to screw up their new friendship.

"Good night Doug." said Darren from his hammock. "Thanks for everything today. This has probably been the best day of my life."

"Good night Darren." replied Doug. "The only thing that would make this better is if we were home now so I could introduce you to everyone as my best friend in the world."

The two boys drifted off to sleep that night, much happier than they had been since the plane crash that had left them alone on their island. Darren was once again back to having good dreams, although now Doug had begun popping up in them. Now the dreams were of he and Doug living together happily on the island for a very long time.

Doug's dreams had changed too. Now Doug was being taunted by the people he knew as his friends. They were now calling him the names that he had called Darren for years. He was now also the subject of their bullying, and he was powerless to stop them. The only one who could help and console him now was Darren, who was isolated behind a wall that had no doors. His dream left him no choice but to find a way to get to Darren before the others could destroy him.

Doug woke up from his dream and got out of his hammock. He stood and looked into the sleeping face of the boy he had tortured for years. "He's no monster." thought Doug to himself. "How could I have done the things I did to him? Right now he almost looks like the same Darren that I wanted to be friends with a long time ago. How could I have put him behind that wall that he uses to protect himself from people like me?" Doug brushed the hair away from Darren's forehead and said aloud, "You won't need that wall anymore my friend. Anyone who wants to get to you will have to deal with me first."

The boys awoke in good spirits the next morning, although Darren seemed to be a little nervous about something. Darren did not want the feelings he was beginning to have to interfere with the friendship that he had rekindled with Doug. At least so far Doug didn't seem to mind anymore that he had been staring at him.

The boys set out about the task of putting a roof on their hut after bathing and gathering breakfast. Pretty soon though, Doug realized that weaving together a roof that wouldn't leak on them was a job that Darren was best suited for. Doug decided that while Darren put together the roof, he would make himself a spear and see if he could catch some fish in the surf. By mid-afternoon Darren was far enough along with the roof that he decided to take a break and watch Doug with his new spear. Darren was glad that he did, as it turned out to be very entertaining. Darren even picked up a few new swear words while listening to Doug.

As Doug was coming out of the surf after having no luck, Darren patted him on the back and said, "Don't worry dude, all you need is a little practice and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it."

"Those damn fish are just smarter than they look." replied Doug. "I'm going to rinse the salt water off me, then we'll put the roof on our hut."

By evening the boys were raising the final roof panels into place and tying everything down with vines. When it was finished , the boys stepped back to take a look at their work.

"Damn dude!" exclaimed Darren. "I think our home looks very nice, don't you?"

"Yeah," replied Doug, "the two of us did a really good job on it. Neither of us could have done anything like this without the other to help him. If it had to be anybody with me now, I'm glad it was you Darren."

"Thanks Doug." replied Darren. "Thanks for pulling me out of that plane too. I think we're going to do okay together now."

The two boys sat in front of their hut on a log that they had put there to sit on, as they watched the sun go down over the ocean. Without thinking about it, Doug put an arm around Darren's shoulder. Darren looked at the boy and smiled as he thought about how lucky he was. When Doug did realize what he was doing, the only thing he did about it was to return Darren's smile.

After a few minutes Doug said, "So Darren, when did you first realize that you were gay? How did you feel when you figured it out?"

"Like I said before," said Darren, "it was about the middle of the eighth grade. There was one guy in particular that every time I looked at him, I wanted to do things that other guys would talk about wanting some girl to do with them. I had a feeling that I wasn't like most of the other guys, so I started reading everything I could about sex. Then I tried to think about myself having sex with a girl. I couldn't even think of myself doing that. In fact, if I thought too hard about it I even became sick to my stomach. Then I tried thinking about having sex with the guy I had been looking at. I had never been so horny in my life after thinking about that.

That was when I figured that I was gay. I didn't much like it at first, sometimes I still wish I weren't the way that I am. I knew that some guys would hate me because of it, even if I tried not to give them a reason to. I was so scared that I ended up crying a lot for the rest of that year. That's when my parents figured that I needed to go to a shrink. I still haven't been completely honest with him, although I was going to have to get honest with him by the end of the summer. I was getting to the point where I just didn't want to have to put up with things anymore."

"Damn dude!" exclaimed Doug. "I didn't know you were seeing a shrink."

"Well," replied Darren, "it's not exactly something that you advertise. Kinda like being gay."

"I'm sorry for anything I had to do with all of that." said Doug. "You don't have to worry about putting up with what people think about you being gay anymore though. I don't mind at all now, and if we get off this island I'll make sure that nobody else does either. I promise I won't let jerks like me hurt you anymore."

"If you really feel that way then you aren't really a jerk anymore." said Darren.

"Thanks dude." said Doug. "So, did you ever tell the guy you were looking at that you liked him?"

"Hell no!" exclaimed Darren. "He probably would have killed me! It was Billy Hutchins."

"No fucking way!" exclaimed Doug. "You had the hots for the tight end on my football team?" Doug began laughing. "I would have loved seeing you talk Billy into actually doing something. He thinks he's so hot around all the girls."

Darren laughed along with Doug before saying, "Just don't ever tell Billy, I'm sure there's no way that he'd ever understand."

"Don't worry about it Darren," said Doug, "you're my best friend now. I'd never do something like that to you."

"Thanks Doug." said Darren. "Well, it's getting really dark. We should probably go to bed now."

"Yeah," replied Doug, "I am kinda tired. I want to ask you something first though, but you have to promise not to get weird on me."

"Okay dude," said Darren, "what is it?"

"Would you sleep in my hammock with me tonight?" asked Doug. "I don't want to do anything, but it feels kinda comfortable to have you close to me right now. I guess it keeps me from feeling alone."

Darren smiled widely and replied, "Sure dude, anytime you want."

The two boys slept peacefully that night in the same hammock. In Doug's dream this night his friends came after him again. This time they wanted to kill Doug and Darren both, but Doug defeated them once and for all. Doug slept with a smile on his face that night.

The next morning the boys woke up feeling better than they had since they arrived on the island. Darren was happy that he and Doug were friends again after so many years. Doug was happy because by accepting Darren for who he was, he was able to defeat some of the demons that lived inside him. Now that the hut was finished Doug decided he was going to practice with his spear until he was able to get a fish with it. Darren thought that his time would be best spent by making something to pick coconuts with while Doug tried to spear a fish. He ended up making a long bamboo pole with a net on the end, so he could reach the coconuts with the pole and knock them off gently into the net. After Darren had collected several large coconuts he decided to watch Doug with his spear. Doug finally noticed Darren watching him and came out of the water.

"Damn!" exclaimed Doug. "I'm getting so close with the spear, but I just can't seem to hit one. I wish I could contribute something to our lives here."

"You already contribute more than you know Doug." replied Darren. "I was wondering though, have you adjusted your aim for the fact that the position of the fish underwater will be distorted by the surface of the water?"

Doug slapped himself in the head and answered, "Aw fuck! I didn't even think about that!" Both boys laughed together before Doug continued, "It's lucky for me that you happen to be on this island with me."

After Doug rested a few minutes he went back into the water. Late that afternoon the boys had a meal that consisted of coconuts and raw fish.

"That tasted great after all the fruit and leaves we've had to eat." said Doug.

"Yeah," agreed Darren, "that was a lot better than I thought it would be. I guess I'll have to try sushi if we ever get off this island."

"We will get rescued, won't we Darren?" asked Doug.

"I'd like to think so." said Darren. "The fact is though we haven't seen a plane or ship anywhere near this island, which means that we must be well away from any shipping lanes or airplane flight corridors."

"I want to go home though Darren." said Doug, with tears forming in the corner of his eyes.

"I know dude," replied Darren, "I do too. I'm sure we'll get out of here someday, but until that happens at least I have you here as my friend."

"Yeah," said Doug as he tried to smile again, "that's the really great thing that has come out of this so far."

The boys sat and talked for the rest of the evening as they looked out over the ocean, trying to spot any hope that they might someday be rescued.

That seemed like an excellent place to take a break for now. At least now Doug and Darren seem to be on the right track. Please send all comments to: timthestoryguy@hotmail.com . Thanks everyone and I'll see you again in chapter 4.
