"Order up" Chapter 11
Brody was pleased with his progress on his day off. He had decided to do his laundry the night before so that would be out of the way. Normally he would do that after the yard work so he would have a reason to stay inside in the air conditioning. The mower was parked back under the barn and the weed eating complete. Brody took a long cool shower washing the dust and sweat from the full day of yard work. After finishing his shower he stepped out onto his patio still naked and stretched out on a lounge chair. The ceiling fan felt good blowing wisps of air across his damp body. Brody looked at his phone and knew that he had to get up shortly so that he could be at Walter's shortly after he got home. He wanted to be there when he got off and give him a ride home but he was afraid that would be going a little too far and upset Walter. Brody thought that he heard a noise but did not get up to go and check.
"BRODY" Luke shouted as he ran around the back of the house. Brody was caught off guard and reflex was to reach for his gun. When his hand hit a bare ass cheek he realized the situation he was in. "What the hell Luke ?" Brody said. "Wow. Holy shit you are one HOT mother fucker." Luke said as he jumped onto the patio. "What are you doing Luke ?" Brody asked. "I guess your radio is not on. Get dressed." Luke said trying to catch his breath.
"It's my day off Luke, what do you need ?" Brody asked. "Get dressed and fast. Walter's camper is on fire." Luke said. Brody shot up in the chair. "This is not funny. If this is one of your match making tricks....." Brody started. "Shut up and get dressed. The fire department was called out to the trailer park. Walter's camper was on fire." Luke said. "What about Walter ?" Body sat still in shock. "I have no idea. Get some damn clothes and get gone. Walter's camper is burning down and I don't know where Walter is." Luke said.
Luke had not really considered that Walter may be in the camper until Brody asked. Pulling out of Brody's driveway the diesel engine roared to life as Luke pushed the peddle all the way to the floor headed towards the trailer park. Luke had made it about two miles down the road when he saw blue lights gaining on him at an ungodly speed. Luke barely heard the siren as the cruiser passed by him like he was parked. "Damn I am pushing one hundred miles per hour. That fucker is flying." Luke said.
Brody had run in the house and grabbed a pair of jeans. With jeans, a state patrol t shirt, his gun and badge, he was out the door in record time. Calling dispatch to say he was mobile and he cold hear the turbo engine of his cruiser singing. Pulling up at the trailer park his heart began to race. The flames were out knowing that most of that little camper probably burned before the fire department got there. The fire department was concentrating on the small pick up that had flames burning through the cab.
One of the deputies met Brody as he was getting out of his car. "What brings you out ? This is a local matter." The deputy said. Brody steadied himself. "Where is Walter ?" Brody asked. "He is around here somewhere I think. We got this. We did not call the state." The deputy said. "You don't have to call me. I am the state director of outside operations. I don't have to wait for a call. Call your boss and ask him." Brody said as he started walking towards the fire truck. Scanning the crowd his heart was sinking. He could not see Walter anywhere.
One of the firemen was standing beside the truck. "What happened here ?" Brody asked. "Old man Turner was trying to hook a heavier extension cord from the camper to that trailer. He already had too many and the box exploded. Caught the pole and camper on fire and in turn the pickup." The fireman said. "Anyone inside ?" Brody asked and held his breath. "They said it was just one guy. He is over on the other side of that trailer. Just follow the shouting." the fireman said. "Make sure you put that part about the cords in your report." Brody said. "Sorry officer. Chief has already said to write it up as a simple electrical fire." The young guy said. "Son he may be your chief but he is local. I am state. It was not a request." Brody said.
"You have been nothing but trouble since the day you moved in my park. I felt sorry for your ass so I never kicked you out. You are going to pay for that camper Walter and you are still going to pay rent. You are also going to pay for the clean up costs so if you think you are getting a check at all for the next year you better damn think again." Mr. Turner shouted shaking his finger in Walter's face. "Is there a problem here sir ?" Brody asked. For the first time in over an hour a scent came across Walter's nose that seemed to sooth him for a second. "Nothing that concerns you. This son of a bitch burned down my camper." Mr. Turner shouted. "My understanding is that you were trying to run power to the trailer next door and the box exploded." Brody said. "Who told you that lie ?" Mr. Turner shouted. "One of the fireman." Brody said. "The state has no business here and that is a lie." Mr. Turner said and then spat at the ground in front of Brody.
Brody took in a deep breath trying not to reach out and tap Mr. Turner. "You stay right here. I am not done with you yet. Not by a long shot." Mr. Turner said and headed towards the fire. "Are you alright Walter ? " Brody said realizing that all he could do was place his hand on Walter's shoulder. "My life is over. I am screwed." Walter said trying not to burst out crying. "He can't make you pay for anything." Brody said. "The only reason he is not still standing here shouting is I bet he has gone to hide those cords." Walter said. "Walter please. Stay right here. I will be right back." Brody said.
Walter knew Mr. Tuner pretty well. When Brody got back to the fire Mr. Turner had a shovel and was trying to get close enough to move the extension cords. "Don't touch those sir." Brody said. "Fuck off. This is my trailer park." Mr. Turner shouted. Brody took a stance and pulled his pistol from the holster and cocked it. All of the chatter from the people watching the fire stopped. The only noise in the park was the pump motor on the fire truck the rushing water on the truck. "Sir I said to step back. By order of the Georgia state patrol put down that shovel and step back." Brody commanded. "And how are you going to stop me ?" Mr. Turner said. "Sir you are interfering with a crime scene. Put down the shovel or I will have two choices. Arrest you for interfering with a crime scene or shoot you right between the eyes." Brody said.
The deputy stood and watched. He had called in to the office and told the Sheriff about Brody's job title. The Sheriff had arrived and walked up beside Brody. "Son there is no need for all this." The Sheriff said. "I want this area secured and roped off." Brody said. "No need for all of that." The Sheriff said. "Sheriff did you hear that put to you in the form of a question. I am not asking. I am ordering." Brody said. The Sheriff stepped back knowing that he had rather deal with the community than have the state come down on him and his department.
The Sheriff walked over and took the shovel from Mr. Turner. "You need to go sit in your truck or under a tree. This could end ugly." The Sheriff said. "Get him off my land Sheriff. Better yet arrest him for trespassing." Mr. Turner shouted. "Sir I am obliged to inform you that as a state officer for the state of Georgia I have jurisdiction over every square inch of this state and a one half mile radius into each adjoining states. The Sheriff has no jurisdiction over me." Brody said with his gun still aimed at Mr. Turner. The Sheriff took the shovel away. "Now move away sir." Brody said and lowered his gun as the man walked away.
Time seemed to stand still while Brody called his dispatch to tell them what was going on and asked them to call the power company and have them inspect the entire park. His next call was to a friend of his in Macon that was with the State Fire Marshall's office. Brody scolded himself for doing that knowing that he would have to stay right there and wait on him to arrive when all he wanted to do was rescue Walter and get him out of there.
Luke walked up while Brody was still on the phone. As soon as Brody took his phone away from his ear Luke spoke up. "What can I do ?" Luke asked. "Find Walter and take him to my house. I don't think I locked it but break in if you have too." Brody said. "Where is he ?" Luke asked. "He was over behind that trailer over there. I told him to wait for me there." Brody said. "O.k. I will do that." Luke said and turned to walk off. "Luke, thank you for what you did earlier." Brody said. "Anytime bud." Luke said.
Brody was beginning to stress because he had watched for Luke to come by with Walter. After about ten minutes he motioned for a deputy to come to where he was standing. "If anyone touches anything here other than a fireman you arrest them or shoot them. " Brody said. "Shoot them ?" The deputy chuckled. "If you tell them to stop and they do not then you have the authority to shoot them right between the eyes." Brody said in a firm tone before walking off.
"LUKE , WALTER." Brody shouted. "OVER HERE." Luke called back. Brody walked to the edge of the woods and saw Luke there on his phone. "Where is Walter ?" Brody asked. "I don't know, he is missing." Luke said. "Missing ?" Brody said. "Well he may not be missing but he was not where you said and I can't find him. I have searched the woods down to the creek. He would have to be on foot, right ?" Luke said. "Who are you talking too ?" Brody asked with an aggravated tone. "Calling the guys out of the fields to come start looking for Walter." Luke said. Brody sat on the ground. "Fuck, fuck, fuck," He shouted. "Calm down Brody. You know he was not in the camper. He is on foot so he couldn't have gone far. " Luke said.
A few minutes later Brody had already received two phone calls from his boss. The call had come in to check protocol for the fire marshal. "I back dated your promotion to yesterday so no protocol was broken." His boss said. "No offense sir but right now I could care less about protocol." Brody. "I understand that son so I am crossing the i's and dotting the t's. Is it safe to assume that the person involved is the young man we spoke about yesterday ?" His boss asked. Brody walked off to the edge of the woods. "Yes it is sir and he is missing." Brody said. "I was told there was no one in the fire." His boss said. "No sir. He was safe but he has disappeared into the woods." Brody said.
"Take a deep breath son. We can not officially call out the troops for twenty four hours but I will flip that switch if needed. I will inform all the officers to be on the look out and also contact the DNR (Department of Natural Resources)." He said. "Thank you sir for your understanding and help." Brody said. "Son we are family. We take care of family. Now you focus on getting the investigation going and consider yourself on vacation until further notice." His boss said. "I will be at work tomorrow if I have not found him." Brody said. "I would expect no less but you let dispatch know your car is on the road but they will be instructed not to put any calls to you unless it involves your missing friend. What is your friend's name ?" He asked. "Walter sir." Brody said. "Brody I promise we will turn over every rock in Georgia to find Walter. So you calm down and let me do what I do." His boss said. "Thank you." Brody said.
Brody was physically and mentally shaken by the time he got back in his cruiser after dealing with the power company and the fire marshal. Over half of the trailers in the park had their power cut off and were tagged so that the power could not be turned back on until they were brought up to code. "Where are you at baby?" Brody whispered.
Walter sat in the woods looking at the back of the camp ground. He pulled the money he had left from his pocket and let a tear drop before forcing the money back into his pocket. Standing up he made his way through the woods. He knew there was a fairly large creek behind the camp ground. The plan was to wait until dark so that anyone from the camp ground would be safely back and he could take a quick bath in the cold water.
He was able to get into the cab of the truck before it was engulfed in flames. He kept a backpack in the truck. It had a pair of shorts, a t shirt, tooth brush and a small douche bottle. This pack had been in the truck for years. He had hoped the first years of going to a larger town that he might get lucky. He kept the backpack so he would be able to freshen up if the opportunity ever happened. As darkness fell he quickly washed himself in the cold creek water. Dressing in the shorts and t shirt he began a trek through the woods towards town.
At this point Walter's mind was numb. There were no thoughts. His mind keep going to . "No alarm clock, can't miss work." Walter made it to town and sat against a tree. The tree was behind the war memorial so it blocked the light from the two street lamps the town had. Refusing to let his mind rest and allow the events of the day to sink in he kept running through his mind over and over. "Turn the cookers on, then the grill. Take out the chicken to prep for the lunch special. Get the vegetables started. Make sure you have enough breakfast supplies out and then start making biscuits." He said over and over in his mind.
Brody pulled over on the side of the road to meet Luke. It was four a.m. and there was still no sign of Walter. "Where can I look now ?" Brody asked with his voice shaking. "You need to go home and sleep for a couple of hours. Some of my guys are still looking. I am going home to rest a few minutes and then take a shower. Adam said that he would continue looking while we went home and he would call us if he found anything." Luke said. "I can't go home and sleep. I have to find Walter." Brody said. "Look Brody. When you find him he is going to be exhausted and stressed beyond belief. You can't help him if you can barely stand up yourself. " Luke said. It took a couple more minutes convincing but Brody finally pulled away and head home.
Brody had fallen asleep sitting on the couch. His phone rang at nine a.m. "Any news on Walter ?" His boss asked. "Not yet sir, what time is it ?" Brody said trying to get his eyes open. "What time did you come in last night ?" His boss asked. " It was about four thirty when I signed off through dispatch." Brody said. "Well son it seems to me like you have finally found that special someone. I am proud of you. Get some more rest and keep me informed." His boss said. "I need to get back out and start looking." Brody said. "All troopers and Rangers are keeping an eye out for him too. You rest. You will be no good to him if you are exhausted too." His boss said. " A friend told me that earlier, that's the only reason I came home." Brody said. "Well listen to your friend. He sounds like a smart one. If we have not found him this afternoon I will issue the missing persons alert." His boss said.
Brody went to put his phone down and noticed a text message. "Walter fine. Number 2 saw him go in the diner for work." The text was from Luke. "Number two ?" Brody thought. While starting the coffee maker Brody had to assume that Luke was referring to number two as Adam. He was trying to make a mental note to thank Adam. "Get a shower, get dressed and when you have your head on straight go to the diner. " He kept thinking. His instinct was to rush out the door and straight to the diner but if Walter was working that would make a stressful situation worse.
