Chapter 27/Girls Talk

There are some things you can’t cover up with lipstick and powder

Thought I heard you mention my name, can’t you talk any louder?

Don’t come any closer, don’t come any nearer

My vision of you can’t come any clearer

Oh I just wanna hear Girls Talk

"Good morning, Forest South Animal Hospital."

"I’d like to make an appointment."

"Is your pet a current patient?"

"No, he’s a kitten. This will be his first visit."

"So, you will need immunizations and perhaps he needs to be neutered? How old is the kitten?"

"About two and a half months. Isn’t that a bit young to be neutered?"

"Not really. We can do them as early at six weeks, now. Let me get some information from you and we’ll see what’s available." The worker typed the information into her terminal.

"OK, Mr. Rosato. The earliest appointment we have is September 11."

"That’s the earliest?"

"I’m sorry."

"OK, we’ll take it."

After they ended their call, the veterinary technician turned to a nurse and said, "I forgot to get the kitten’s name."

I suppose you’re gonna have to play it by ear

"Hi, Matt, it’s Bill."

"Oh, hi Bill."

"This is my weekly call. So how are things going?

"Really good. He’s doing well in school. He’s in all advanced classes, so I’m sure it will keep him out of trouble. He’s had homework every night since the first day."

"Is he doing it?"

"You’d better believe it. He sits at the dining room table, no TV, no radio. It took a lot of negotiation, believe me. We finally came to the compromise that we would review the policy after we get grades for the first quarter, then we’ll make a judgement from there. Tim is helping him out in algebra."

"How is the junior high? I know you had some concerns."

"The advanced classes are excellent. I like the principal. We had an interview with her before school started. He’ll get a pretty good education there."

"What about socially?"

"Almost from the first week, this little clique adopted him. They’re in the same classes. They’re nice kids. The other night, I got home and they were sitting in my kitchen, eating everything in sight, like a swarm of locusts."

Bill laughed.

"And, he’s even got girls calling him. They follow him around at school."

"I’ll bet he’s thrilled," Bill said sarcastically.

"Actually, he likes the attention. Deep down, I think he’s excited that girls find him attractive. He just wishes it’s the boys who found him attractive. But he’s not much of an athlete, so that’s unlikely to happen. He joined a bunch of clubs, and I warned him not to overextend himself."

"Great job, as usual, Matt. OK, our monthly visit is set for the 16th. If anything comes up, give me a call."

"I do have a question."

"Shoot."

"Has my name been added to the visitor’s list for Mike Rosen?"

"Yes, you can take him for a day whenever you’re ready."

"Thanks, Bill."

"Hi, son."

"Oh, hi Dad." The surprise was audible in Tim’s voice.

"How are you feeling?"

"Much better, thanks."

"When is the cast coming off?"

"I still have another month to go. But the doctor says I’m healing pretty well. The cast may even come off early. I can’t wait to get back to work. I’m bored as hell."

"Well, you can still supervise, can’t you?"

"Sure. What did you have in mind?"

"You could help train Ron’s replacement."

"I guess I could." There was a long, awkward pause. "What’s up, Dad? What’s going on?"

"I don’t know. I’m not used to living alone."

"I thought you’d like it."

"I’m used to having noise around. When you kids were growing up, something was always going on." Tim was reading between the lines. He’s lonely. He doesn’t know how to tell me. It had been more than a month since he moved into his own apartment in Tinley Park. The divorce was not yet finalized, but Patrick and Jeannie had already decided to sell the house in Flossmoor. They were each planning on buying a condominium with the proceeds. "I thought you were seeing someone."

"I was. I still am, I guess."

"You don’t sound too sure. What’s wrong, Dad?"

"He wants to get serious. I’m not ready."

"That sounds familiar," Tim said dryly. They were having an informal get-together over Labor Day, and Tim thought about inviting his father and his new friend to the barbecue, but then rejected the idea. He was still a bit uncomfortable about meeting his father’s boyfriend.

"Well, I guess I’m going to throw something in the microwave. Let me know when you’re ready to come back to work, but don’t rush it. I don’t want you to get hurt again."

"OK, dad, I will."

"Umm...I love you, son." The expression of emotion was difficult for Patrick.

"I love you, too, dad."

"District Six offices, Cindy speaking."

"Hi, Cindy, it’s Matt."

"Matt!" Cindy laughed her boisterous, throaty laugh. He could picture her throwing her head back as she always did when she laughed.

"I was supposed to call Julia when I got back from vacation."

"And how was it?"

"It sucked. I spent most of the time worried about Tim. He was hurt in the tornado Wednesday."

"Oh, God. Is he OK?"

"He has a broken arm and a large cut on his head. He’s healing, though."

"And is he a good patient, or is he demanding you bring him bon-bons in bed?"

It was Matt’s turn to laugh. "He’s pretty good so far. He’s still sleeping a lot, but every day he’s sleeping less and less."

"So, you want to talk to Julia? I supposed you’re going to give her the answer about the downtown store? Conventional wisdom around the district says the answer is no."

"And Conventional Wisdom would be correct."

"I knew it, I just knew it," she laughed again. "Here’s Julia."

"Hi, Matt, have a nice vacation?" In his mind, he pictured her wearing her trademark black clothes. Matt suspected her whole wardrobe was black. It was as if she were perpetually in mourning.

He repeated a variation of the story he told Julia’s assistant.

"Julia, I think I’m going to decline the offer of the downtown store. My foster son came to live with me earlier that I thought."

"What if I raised the salary offer?"

Matt hadn’t been expecting this. He took a deep breath, but paused only a moment. "Thanks just the same, Julia. Brian is my responsibility. I appreciate it, though."

"And I admire you for standing up for your new family. I knew you weren’t going to take it. But, confidentially, I’ll tell you something else. They’re planning on remodeling and expanding the Lincoln Mall store to a prototype like yours next year. Ken won’t be able to handle the transition."

"He’s been there for years. Since the dawn of time."

"Well, maybe it’s time for him to explore other opportunities." Matt wondered what she meant by that comment. It sounded ominous. "Well, just something to keep in mind."

"Thanks, Julia. I appreciate it."

"Hi, this is Matt. How can I help you?"

There was some heavy breathing. "Hey studboy. What are you doing?"

"Just taking a break, as a matter of fact."

"Who answered the phone?"

"That was Martha. She’s one of my favorite part-timers. She’s older, but a total gem. How are things going?"

"Just helped Brian with his algebra homework. He’s catching on."

"You didn’t do it all for him, did you?"

"No, Matt. Give me some credit. I just showed him a different way to do it."

"What did you guys eat for dinner?"

"Leftovers. There was some chili left over and I put together a salad."

"Congratulations. That’s the first step."

"I miss you."

"That’s sweet, but I’ll see you in – what – two hours?"

Tim started breathing heavier into the phone. "Where are you?"

"In the back room. What are you doing?"

"I’m in the bedroom. I’m thinking about you. I need you." Tim’s breath came in a series of short pants.

"Are you jacking off?"

"Mmmm. Yeah and thinking about you."

"Can you jack off with the cast on?" Matt tried to keep the conversation on a superficial level. He didn’t was to become aroused at work.

"No. I’m using my left hand. But I wish it were your hand. Actually, I’m pretending it is your hand."

"Tim, stop. I have work to do. I have to go."

"Wait!" There was a long pause. "Is the door closed?

"The door to the sales floor? Yeah."

"Pull it out for me, Matt. Come on, jack off with me. A little phone sex won’t hurt. No one will ever know."

"I can’t Tim."

"Come on, Matt. Don’t be such a stuffed shirt. Have some fun." He lowered his voice to a low and sensual tone. "Come on, baby. Pull your cock out. That’s right, that’s a good boy." He was almost whispering by this time. "Pull it out for me, Matt. Atta boy."

Matt found himself following directions. His cock was already hard, and he started rubbing he head, and praying to God that no one appeared in the back room. "It’s out."

Tim inhaled through his teeth, then exhaled a breathy, "Yeah."

Matt started to masturbate as fast as he could. He just wanted relief at this point.

"Picture this, Matt. I’m licking your balls while you jack off."

That image almost pushed Matt over the edge. He could almost feel this hot breath and warm saliva on his testicles.

"I had some extra time this afternoon," Tim said. "Guess what I did?"

Why is he changing the subject? I can’t do this forever. Some one is going to walk in on me. "What did you do?"

"I shaved. Everything. The big shavedown. I can’t wait until you feel my balls. They’re so smooth."

That did it. Matt ejaculated, and just missed a pile of books on the floor.

"Good boy," Tim said. Shortly, he came also. "Thanks for playing with me."

"You’re going to get me in trouble someday."

"I love you, Matt."

"I love you too, Tim."

"I can’t wait until you get home."

"Why? What did you do?"

"I have a surprise."

"I gotta clean up and get going. I can’t wait to see the surprise."

"Is this Brian?"

"Yeah."

"This is Diane. I’m in your Reading Class."

"Oh, hi! How are you?" Brian had been hoping it was Jake, a boy that was in all the same classes he was.

"Pretty good. I was wondering if you were going to the Back To School Dance."

"I hadn’t really thought about it."

"Oh." The disappointment was obvious in her voice.

"When is it?" he asked trying to salvage the conversation.

"A week from Friday."

"Oh. Well, I might. Maybe. I’ll think about it."

Diane was disappointed. She had sent word through the grapevine that she liked Brian. But, then again, so did every other girl at Forest Trails Junior High. He hadn’t responded. As far as she knew, he hadn’t responded to any other girl. Diane considered this a positive sign.

"Well, I’ll see you in school tomorrow."

"Yeah. Thanks for calling."

"Who was that, Brian? Tim asked.

"Just a friend from school."

"Could you please tell them not to call after nine? I’d appreciate it."

There was a note on the kitchen table informing Matt that Marty had called when he got home from work that night. Even though it was 10 PM, Matt knew that Marty was a night owl and would still be awake.

"Hey Marty! Where have you been?"

"I got one!"

"One, what?"

"A Queer Ken!"

"A what?"

"Mattel put out the Earring Magic Ken, but we all know it’s the Queer Ken. He has a lavender mesh top, two-tone frosted blond hair and – get this – a cockring on a choker!"

"No fucking way!"

"I kid you not. It’s the hottest thing. I’ve been looking for one for weeks!"

"Mattel must have lost their minds. Barbie had been going out with a faggot all these years."

Matt snickered. "Ken is a faggot! Who knew?" They both laughed. "So how have you been?"

"Busy, very busy, darling."

"With what’s-his-name?"

"Rick."

"Marty, you fall in love way too easily."

"I do not."

"So how did you meet him, again?"

"In the forest preserves near your house." Marty figured it was no use lying to Matt. He would discover the truth sooner or later, anyway.

"Very romantic," Matt said dryly. "How old is he?"

"He’s fifty-five. But gorgeous. He’s in shape, he as all his hair, even if it is all gray, and a beautiful smile. And he’s got the dick of death. I mean huge."

"You are such a mess," Matt laughed. "I never knew you were such a size queen."

"I’m learning to embrace my inner size queen."

"Didn’t you say he was married?"

"He’s divorced. He has four older kids."

"I don’t know, Marty," Matt said skeptically, "I don’t trust bisexuals. They’re very indiscriminate about who they fuck. So when am I finally going to meet him?"

"Well, I was going to bring him to your little soiree over Labor Day, but it rained all weekend."

"Yeah, I had to postpone it. How about this weekend?"

"OK, cupcake. I’ll talk to Rick and see if he’s free."

"Hi, Matt. It’s Leah. Is everything OK?"

Matt pushed Tim away. He mouthed Leah and pointed in the direction of her townhouse.

"Um, yeah. Why?"

"I heard some shouting. I just wanted to make sure everyone was all right."

"Oh, umm, yeah. Tim was just watching a football game on TV and he got a little carried away."

"Oh, OK. I was sure someone was hurt."

"No, everything’s OK," Matt lied. "I’m sorry we disturbed you."

"Good night, Matt. Take care."

"Thanks for calling, Leah."

"Football on Thursday?" Tim asked when Matt got off the phone.

"Well, I didn’t want to worry her. She thinks you’re such a nice boy. I didn’t want to ruin her image of you by telling her about your black leather harness and jockstrap."

Oh I just wanna hear Girls Talk

Brian sat nervously with Prints in a pet carrier on his lap. Matt was filling out the forms while they waited for the veterinarian to call their name. The kitten peered out of the carrier with round and frightened eyes.

Matt handed the clipboard back to the receptionist at the desk. She flipped through the papers he had just completed, and started to giggle.

"Joan, come here," she called to a veterinarian technician. "Look at this."

A heavy-set woman looked at the top page and burst out laughing. "That’s funny. I love it." Joan motioned to another vet tech. He came over, looked at the paper, and burst out laughing.

"Phil, come here."

The lab assistant came out, looked at the paper, and slapped his knee. "Now, that’s a creative name for a cat!"

Two curious veterinarians in white coats joined the group at the reception desk to look at the name of the new feline patient. They both started laughing.

Finally, Dr. Alexander appeared. The receptionist handed her the clipboard.

The doctor flipped though papers and her brow creased in concentration. Then she smiled widely as the name finally dawned on her.

The entire waiting room burst out laughing when Dr. Alexander called out the name of her next patient.

"The Cat Formerly Known As Prints."
