Prologue
"Daddy, where are we going," clutching an old leather baseball glove, the boy spoke hesitantly not wanting to make his father unhappy. Lately his daddy had been always sad. He tried to cheer him up today by asking him to play catch, like they did before Mommy went to heaven but Daddy had said no, and kept on packing.
His movements were angry as he shoved clothes into a big suitcase.
"Daddy?" the boy whispered again, scared because his Daddy almost never got angry with him.
"We are going to live some where else now, Connor" His father said, pausing briefly to give him a weak smile, then continued packing.
"For how long?" Connor asked. He didn't want to go anywhere else; he wanted to stay with here with his friends and his dog Max.
Sighing heavily, his father turned around and sat down on the bed, then patted the space next to him.
"Come here, buddy," he said, trying to sound happy.
Connor slowly shuffled toward him, then climbed onto the high platform bed. He was 8 years old now and could do it all by himself without his Daddies help, not like when he was little.
"Do you remember when your mom died and I met Marie we had a talk?" His father asked.
"Huh huh, you said we were gonna start a new life," Connor replied.
"Well Marie and I decided we are not right for each and we don't want to be together anymore, understand?" his father questioned.
"But, why are we moving?" Connor inquired. This was the house he lived in all his life with his Mommy and Daddy. Now he lived here with Marie and Gabriel too, though Gabriel was gone a lot cause he was bad and Marie sent him to a special school. He didn't like Marie very much because she didn't like his hugs like Mommy used to. He was always afraid she would send him away to special a school too if he was bad, so he was always extra good. She didn't smell like chocolat chip cookies like his Mom either, but since his Daddly liked her he tried to be nice to her.
"Because, this Marie's house now buddy," His father replied, he looked tired; lines were creased all over his face. His lips were pressed tightly together as if he wanted to cry but couldn't.
"No it's not, it's ours" Connor said, his eyes starting burn as tears fell down his face.
"Not anymore, buddy, not anymore" his father said. Shaking his sadly, Daddy got up and started packing once again. Connor sat there watching his Daddy stuff clothes into bags, wondering what was going to happen to him.
