Kevin has a dream in which he finds out that Nick does indeed return his romantic feelings. Kevin probably wishes that the dream hadn't ended, but unfortunately Brian woke him up because they were starting the tour with *NSYNC that day, and Kevin needed to get ready.
Later, Justin and Lance show up first, and sit down to eat breakfast with Kevin and Brian. During the course of their conversation, Justin and Lance find out about Kevin's divorce from Kristin, and Brian's calling off his wedding to Leighanne, as well as the reasons behind both.
Nick, AJ, and Joey arrive shortly afterward, and this is when Brian's heart is ripped from his body and stomped on when he finds out that Lance is gay but married to Justin. He runs from the kitchen, and ends up in Kevin's bedroom, being cradled by Kevin, sobbing his eyes out.
The other members of the *NSYNC arrive, and they're filled in on the morning's happenings. As well as on Howie's reaction to Kevin and Brian's coming out. It seems that Howie is refusing to travel on the tour bus, because he doesn't want to be around Kevin and Brian, so he is instead booking flights to all of the tour dates and staying in hotels other than his band mates.
Eventually Nick and AJ are asked about their sexualities, and while AJ is able to answer right away that he's straight, Nick stutters a bit, before getting up and running from the room, locking himself in a bathroom without answering the question. No matter how hard Nick tries he just can't say the word gay out loud when it's in reference to himself. BJ knows, but she figured it out on her own.
Nick calls BJ, as his sister is the only person that he feels comfortable talking about this with.
Chapter 9
"Hello?"
"BJ? It's Nick, I really need to talk to you."
"Nick, you don't sound so good," replies BJ, with obvious concern in her voice, "What's wrong?"
"I'll call you back," replies Nick, as someone starts knocking on the door, "Stay by the phone."
Nick hangs up on his sister, and looks around the room frantically for a moment. Nick then climbs up onto the whirlpool tub, and opens the window above the tub, before hoisting himself up and out of the bathroom through the window. Nick lands with a thud in some bushes, and he quickly dusts himself off a little before running out front to his car. Nick gets into it, and drives off.
----
"Damnit! Nick just left," replies AJ, as he comes into the small hallway off the kitchen where Justin was knocking on the bathroom door. Nick's reaction worried everyone in the room, and Justin and the other guys soon gathered outside the door.
"What do you mean he left?"
"Well, Lance his car just sped down the street," replies AJ, "There is a rather large window above the whirlpool in this bathroom, he must have climbed out of it."
"Okay maybe I'm just dense here," replies Joey, as he gets ready to smack Justin for agreeing with that comment, "But, is there more going on here that we don't know about, AJ?"
"Well, yeah there is," replies AJ, "I've suspected since yesterday that Nick might be gay. Which if he is, could turn out to be a good thing."
"Why's that?" asks Chris.
"Because Kevin is in love with him."
"Kevin is in love with Nick?" asks Lance, "Does Nick return those feelings?"
"I don't know," replies AJ, "But to me, Nick does seem to be overly concerned for Kevin's happiness and well being. Way more then a typical overly protective mother."
"Well, then either Nick is in love with Kevin," replies Joey, "Or there's just something about himself that he's neglected to mention to anyone."
Lance, JC, AJ, Chris, and Justin quickly pick up on what Joey meant by his last comment, and Joey is thrown off balance and falls on his butt when all 5 of his friends punch him in the arm.
----
Fifteen minutes later, Nick's car stops in the parking lot of a small park about two miles away from Kevin's house. He quickly pulls open his cell phone and hits the redial button.
"Nick?" asks BJ, with concern in her voice.
"Yeah, BJ, it's me."
"What's wrong, bro?"
"I think I'm beginning to lose my mind."
"You are not losing you mind Nick."
"Well then why can't I bring myself to say it? Why in the hell is it when the guys ask me about my sexuality, I just can't say it? Why do I panic and run?"
"Calm down, Nick. Getting all worked up isn't going to help anything," replies BJ, in a soothing voice, "Now, Nick you will tell the guys when you're ready, and I'm not going to pressure you into telling them a moment sooner."
"Well, I don't understand why I can't say it," replies Nick.
"You're probably still afraid of their reactions," replies BJ, who doesn't know that over half the performers involved in the upcoming tour are gay, "Which is understandable, they're your friends, and you fear they're reject you."
"That's just it BJ," replies Nick, "I now know that none of the guys, except for Howie, will reject me. I just still can't bring myself to say it in reference to myself."
"Whoa, backup, Nicky," replies BJ, "What do you mean? How do you know that Howie is the only one who will reject you?"
"Because."
"Because is not an answer, Nicky," replies BJ, "Now what's going on?"
"Okay, okay," replies Nick, "They're all gay."
"What? Whose all gay?"
"Well, Brian is bi-sexual," replies Nick, "He's called off his wedding to Leighanne. Lance and Justin are gay, and they're a married couple. Chris and JC are gay, neither of them having boyfriends at the moment. AJ and Joey are both straight, but are both accepting of everyone else's sexualities. And, and... um..."
"And what?" asks BJ, as Nick continues to stutter.
Nick gulps, and then replies, "And Kevin is gay. He's divorcing Kristin."
"So, the only person who you know is going to have a problem with your being gay is Howie?"
"Yeah."
"Okay, Nicky, correct me if I'm wrong," replies BJ, "But since when do you and Howie really get along anyway? You've never been the best of friends. To but it plainly, he's a jackass."
"I know," replies Nick, "I don't know, I guess I just got scared when I saw Howie's reaction to the news that Kevin is gay, and Brian's bi."
"So he didn't take it well?"
"That's an understatement," replies Nick, "He blew up at them, calling them fucking faeries and faggots. Now he's refusing to travel on the bus with us. He's gonna fly to all the tour destinations and not stay in the same hotels as us."
"Well, he's certainly taking this to extremes," replies BJ, "I can see why his reaction scared ya, Nick."
"Well, if it's bad now," replies Nick, "I'm not sure I even want to imagine what his reaction will be when he finds out that I'm gay."
"Well, Nicky, I think you should just toughen up and tell the guys the truth."
"It's just a little more complicated then that BJ."
"Why?"
"I suppose I've never told you this."
"Told me what, Nicky?"
"Well, I'm in love."
"Please don't tell me you're in love with Howie. Cause I'll kill ya."
"I'm not in love with Howie," replies Nick, truthfully, "I could never love him."
"Well then Nicky who are you in love with?" asks BJ, before a thought comes to her, "Is it Brian? I know you two have always been close. And oh my God he is so fine!"
"It's not Brian."
"Who then?! Tell me before I reach through this phone and strangle you!"
"Well, BJ, you were close when you said Brian," replies Nick, hoping that maybe BJ will pick up on his meaning.
"Quit playing games, Nicky," replies BJ with a slight laugh, "Tell me already!"
"Okay, okay. BJ, I'm in love with Kevin."
----
"Those dumb, stupid faggots," replies Howie, as he packs some bags, getting ready to head for the airport in order to catch a flight to the first tour date, 'They don't deserve to live.'
"Why are you being so mean?" rings out a voice in Howie's head, which would of course be his conscience.
"Fucking fairies," growls Howie as he continues to pack, "They'll get what's coming to them. They're gonna spend eternity rotting in Hell, where they belong."
"That's not a very nice thing to say about your friends," replies Howie's conscience.
"They're not my friends! They're a bunch of fucking faggots! They hit on and want to sleep with every guy they see, and they started the AIDS epidemic. God damn faggots! They don't deserve to live. They weren't created in goodness and light by the all-mighty God, they were put on this Earth by Satan himself to make life miserable for all of us normal, straight people and to try and convert us to Satan's evil ways."
"Howie you should be ashamed of yourself," rings out a voice in Howie's head, only this time it's not his conscience. A chill runs down Howie's spine as he realizes that the voice in his head is that of his late sister, Caroline.
"No, no, I shouldn't be ashamed of myself," replies Howie, "Caroline I love you, but you're wrong. I shouldn't be ashamed. I speak the truth. Kevin and Brian are faggots! They don't deserve to live! I wish they were dead!"
"Howie, they're still your best friends," whispers Caroline's voice, as Howie realizes that this time the voice wasn't in his head, but came from behind him.
Howie whirls around and sees his sister standing there. Caroline is standing there dressed all in white, with a luminous glow surrounding her. Howie starts to shake a bit with fear, before replying, "Caroline? No, it can't be. You're dead."
"Yes, Howie, I am dead," replies Caroline, "I'm an angel, and I've been watching over you Howie. When I saw how you turned on Kevin and Brian I was shocked. For the first time I can honestly say that I was ashamed of you."
"How can you say that, Caroline? You're in Heaven now, and you must know that I speak the truth. Kevin and Brian are faggots, they're homosexuals created by Satan, they don't deserve to live!"
"Howie, you don't speak the truth. God loves all of His children, whether they're black, white, gay, straight, it doesn't matter. And Kevin and Brian are not creations of Satan. They were put on this Earth by God, and He is not angry with them about their sexualities, He still loves them Howie. And despite the way that you're acting right now, He still loves you too."
"No, you're wrong Caroline," replies Howie, "How can you stand here and lie to me? It clearly states in Leviticus that homosexuality is an abomination, punishable be death."
"Howie, have you actually read Leviticus?"
"Of course I have!"
"Well, then I'm sure you know that according to Leviticus, what you ate for lunch today was an abomination."
Howie looks at his sister, confused, obviously not understanding what she means, "What are you talking about? I had a ham sandwich, so what?"
"And what animal does ham come from, Howie?"
"A pig?"
"That's right Howie, and if you've read Leviticus you know that it says pig meat is unclean and eating it is an abomination."
"I must have missed that part."
"No, Howie, you didn't miss it," replies Caroline, "You've just never read Leviticus. You were just quoting the famous passage which is said to condemn homosexuality in God's eyes. But Howie, trust me when I say this, God loves Kevin and Brian. He doesn't care that they're homosexuals. He loves them unconditionally. And He still loves you Howie, despite the fact that you are saying all those terrible things about two of His children."
"No, it can't be true!"
"It is Howie. Why do you hate Kevin and Brian so much? Up until a few days ago they were your best friends. You loved them like they were your brothers," replies Caroline, "And then Kevin tells you that he's gay, and Brian says that's he's bi, and suddenly you hate them and are wishing that they were dead.
"I shouldn't have to tell you Howie that it is a sin to wish death upon another of God's children. Howie, I can't stay much longer, my time on this Earth is growing very short. But before I go, I want to say this. Howie change your ways and embrace Kevin and Brian, they are your friends. They're still the same two guys that you loved like brothers. Howie if you continue this hatred, it will stain your soul, and it will be you who is rotting in Hell for all eternity, not Kevin and Brian.
"Stop your hatred, Howie, stop your hatred," replies Caroline, as the white luminous glow surrounding her begins to intensify into a very bright white light, as she begins to float upwards, before disappearing completely, leaving Howie alone in his bedroom.
Suddenly, Howie shoots up in bed, drenched in a cold sweat. He looks around the room to see his bags packed, sitting near the bedroom door. He slowly gets out of bed, and stretches, realizing that Caroline's appearance to him was all a dream. But her words are still in his head, "Stop your hatred, Howie, stop your hatred," rings through his head over and over, as Howie collapses to his knees, clutching his head.
----
"Kevin? As in Kevin Richardson?"
"Yes, BJ, Kevin Richardson," replies Nick, "The eldest Backstreet Boy. I'm head over heels in love with him, and I have been for quite some time."
"Well, if you know that he's gay, and divorcing Kristin," replies BJ, "Why haven't you told him how you feel? Maybe there's a future for the two of you."
"No, there isn't, BJ," replies Nick, "If there's one thing I'm sure of, there is no way in Hell that a great guy like Kevin could ever like me that way."
"Nick if you don't stop talking like that right now I'm gonna fly down to Orlando and beat the crap out of you. You are a great guy and any guy would be lucky to be with you."
"Thanks BJ," replies Nick, "But you can stop lying now."
"Nickolas Gene Carter! I am NOT lying. You are a wonderful guy, and I am not just saying that because you're my brother. Hell if you weren't my brother and you weren't gay, I'd want to date you myself. Not because you're Nick the Backstreet Boy, but because you are Nick the loving, kind and caring guy that you are. I repeat, any guy would be lucky to be with you Nick."
"Okay, BJ, I get the point," replies Nick, "But, I still can't tell Kevin how I feel."
"Why not?"
"Because."
BJ waits for a moment, hoping that Nick will elaborate, and when he doesn't, she replies, "Nick, because is not an answer."
"Well, BJ, how do you expect me to tell Kevin that I'm in love with him?" asks Nick, "What just walk up to him and say Kevin, I'm in love with you? I know that he's gay, but I can't even say it in reference to myself! No matter how hard I try I just can't get the words out of my mouth. So how in the Hell do you expect me to be able to tell Kevin that I'm in love with him, when I can't even say that I'm gay."
"You just did, Nick."
"What?"
"Nick, you just said it: I'm gay. Whether you realize it or not. Up until now in our conversations you've never said I'm gay. You always say that you can't say it in reference to yourself, but you just did."
"Well, it's different with you."
"How?"
"Because you already knew that I'm gay."
"You just said it again. Nick, it shouldn't matter who you're talking to. You've said the words I'm gay twice now. So your argument that you can't say it about yourself just doesn't work anymore. Nick, tell the guys that you're gay. Tell Kevin that you're in love with him."
"I can't, BJ, I can't!"
"Yes, you can Nick. I know you can. Nick do you want to die an old man all alone with nobody by your side? Do you want to go through your life with the group and see Kevin dating some guy and wondering in the back of your mind if maybe, just maybe that could have been you? If only you had told him how you felt? I know you don't want that, Nick. I know you want to be happy, and nobody deserves it more then you. Nick my advice is that you tell Kevin that you love him. Even if you don't tell the guys that you're gay right away, at the very least tell Kevin how you feel."
"Thanks for listening to me, BJ, and thanks for the advice. I'll think about what you've said, but I have to go now. Bye." replies Nick, as he quickly pushes the end button on his cell phone before his sister can say more. Knowing that she has his cell on speed dial, Nick turns his phone off before returning it to the pocket of his jeans.
"Maybe she's right. Maybe I should tell Kevin. Even if he doesn't return the feelings, at least I will have told him, and I won't have to spend my life thinking about what ifs. But then too if he doesn't return my feelings, I don't know what I'd do. I love him so much. More then life itself.
"Shutup Nick, and stop trying to talk yourself out of this. Just tell Kevin how you feel about him. I'll wait for the perfect time, when we can be alone and I know we won't be disturbed and then I will tell him."
----
To be continued...
