Please...Remember me

Previous Chapter: Werner Cleverley and Ryan Black have been life long friends ever since Kindergarten. Three years previously, Ryan had a scare when he was diagnosed with Bloodcancer. Afraid that he would die without ever getting a chance to tell Werner his true feelings, he told him he loved him. After Ryan got better, Werner confessed to his life long friend that he felt exactly the same. Three years on, the the present day, Werner's mom found them in bed together. Both Werner's parents had problems accepting their son was gay, however, his dad could still tolerate it. Werner and Ryan however promised to love eachother always, and that biggots and homophobes were not going to drive them apart. The following morning, Werner's mom, Marie threw him out of the house as she couldn't live with a gay person under one roof. Werner was so upset he rushed out to school in order to see Ryan, but he was run over by a Mercedes Bentz. He was diagnosed with a partically fractured skull and was in a coma for forty-three days. Finally Ryan received the good news that his friend had woken up...but the joy didn't last long. Werner was suffering from amnesia, he didn't even recognise his own father!

Chapter 2

"No...No Uncle Jake, no!! I've been waiting so long for my boyfriend to wake up and now you're telling me that I can't see him?? That's total bullshit right there!"

"Ryan, please understand, son. He has AMNESIA! He couldn't even remember who I was! He's NOT gonna remember you..."

"He loves me, Uncle Jake! Im not saying he doesn't love you aswell, but he WILL remember me!"

Jacob Cleverley sighed at the eighteen year old before him. There was only one way to prove to Ryan that he was telling the truth. This was definitely going to hurt the boy, but this was something he had to see and experience for himself.

"Fine...fine Ryan, he is in Room 267, straight down the passage way, turn right and the third door on your left. Ryan...please don't be upset if he cannot remember you."

But Ryan wasn't listening. He ran straight down the passage way like Uncle Jake directed him, turned right and stopped when he got to the third door on the left hand side. He nervously breathed in and out, made sure he looked somewhat respectable and slowly walked into the room. Werner was indeed awake, with both of his arms across his beautiful teenage face. The same face which Ryan fell in love with all those years ago. Werner must have heard a noise because he quickly, and much too painful, turned around to look at Ryan.

"Fuck!! Shit that hurts!" Werner hissed as the blinding pain in his head shot through his brain from getting up too fast. He had only just woken up early that same morning! He squinted his eyes against the sun blazing into the room from the outdoors before focusing on the boy standing infront of him.

"Werner...jeez dude, you're okay! I was so damn worried..." Ryan said with unshed tears in his eyes. Werner's hair had started to grow back slowly after the surgery but the scar where the scalpel dug into could still be seen. Otherwise, he was still the same Werner Ryan knew and loved with all his young heart.

"I'm sorry...Dude..." Werner said slowly as he looked Ryan up and down. The latter could see confusion in his eyes. Uncle Jake's voice came back to haunt him at that moment...

"Werner...please pal...please tell me you remember who I am?" Ryan finally asked, blatantly terrified of hearing the answer that he somehow already knew.

"Dude...I'm sorry, but should I know you? Were we friends or something?"

Ryan's hands immediately rose upwards and ran themselves through his spiky hair. He didn't care that half the dried gel was now stuck to his fingers. He stared at his best friend with a utter force of disbelief and dissapointment.

"Werner, it's me! Ryan Black...your best friend since Kindergarten! Fuck sake, dude, how can you NOT remember me? I don't fucking understand this!"

"Whoa man, slow down there! You're freaking me out! Look here, I woke up this morning and things are fucked, okay? I couldn't even remember my own name until that older dude who says he's my father told me what it was! Give me a break, okay? Im shit scared! Jeez my head hurts..." Werner said before he sunk backwards onto the pillow. It was then that Jacob entered the room after standing outside and hearing everything said between the two boys.

"Come on, Ryan. Werner needs to rest. He's still way to weak to be upset like this."

"Uncle Jake, you KNOW I wouldn't ever do anything to hurt Werner, for crying out loud, he's my boyf..."

"Yeah okay, I know that. Lets get you home. I'll come and pick you up this evening at six when its visiting hours. Werner..."

The confused eighteen year old opened his eyes and casted them to the man standing next to him. Could this man really be his father?

"Uhm...yeah?"

"Get some sleep, okay? We'll be back tonight."

"What's the point, Mister? I don't know you guys! I don't know what the hell is going on! Im so scared, can no one understand that!" Werner screamed out at the top of his voice. A huge mistake since a blinding flash of pain blasted over his brain yet again, which forced him to curl up inside the bed, holding his head.

Jacob took hold of his son's shoulder and gently started to rub the shaking flesh underneath it. He lifted up Werner's face and saw the tears that was beginning to stream across the handsome boyish face.

"Werner, I'm your father. I will never do anything bad to you. Neither will Ryan over there. He has been your best friend since you guys were six years old. Believe us, son. We will never lie to you."

"Then why can't I remember you...?" Werner whispered through his tears, desperately seeking the answer in the older man's eyes.

"Son, the doctor told me that there is no way in telling when your amnesia will clear off or when you will start to remember things. Give it some time. I promise you, everything is going to be okay."

Jacob leaned down and kissed Werner's forehead, before giving him a pat on the shoulder. Ryan just stood there the whole time listening to the intimate conversation between father and son before him. If Werner didn't remember Uncle Jake of all people...what were the chances that he would remember him?

Something else was bothering Ryan and when himself and Uncle Jake got to the parking lot. He wasn't sure that he was correct, but he owed it to himself and to Werner in a nutshell to ask.

"Uncle Jake...I was wondering...right before I said that Ryan was my boyfriend and I would never harm him...you stopped me right before I could say "boyfriend", didn't you?"

Jacob looked Ryan straight in the eye. Then finally after a minute or so, he had to nod his head very gently. Still no words were spoken.

"Why, Uncle Jake? Why don't you want him to remember me?" Ryan asked quietly. Jacob sighed before he finally answered.

"Son, the way that the doctor explained this whole thing to me was upsetting. Bascially anyone could at this moment tell Werner a story and he'll have no option or choice but to take it as the truth, since he cannot remember anything about himself or his surroundings. All that he knows is that he's a boy. Now...the old Werner who was fully aware who and what he is, had NO problem with himself being gay and being inlove with you. BUT...this current version of Werner might not be too thrilled learning that he was in a gay relationship. I don't know how he will take that news. The Werner you and I have known all our lives is still hidden in that boy upstairs in that hospital room, Ryan! But at the moment...he's not there. Please understand and realise why had HAD to stop you from saying anything. Having that information might make it more difficult reconnecting your friendship with him aswell. Things will be awkward for you both, not just for him."

Ryan thought about that for a while. Ofcourse, if he would take it on himself, if he had lost his memory, he would also be freaked out to know he was gay. Uncle Jake was right. There was no way to know for sure how "this" Werner would adapt to that.

"I understand, Uncle Jake, but I can't just forget what we had? I know you probably don't wanna hear this, but the day before the accident, he told me he'd love me forever. Such was his determination that despite of Aunt Marie and you not taking it well, despite of what people might say, that he chose to love me still. I can't just let that go!"

"Ryan, I understand a lot more than you think. It wasn't easy for me either looking into my son's eyes, knowing he hasn't got a fricken clue who I am. Go home for now, get some rest. I'll pick you up at around six, okay?"

Ryan nodded, got into his car and drove home. An idea was forming into his head the moment that he entered his bedroom. He quickly opened up his cupboard and started to gather all the photoalbums he owned. He carefully handpicked all the photo's of himself and Werner of all different ages and placed them aside. When you're friends with someone for eleven years, you have loads of pics gathered over times. When he finished there was nine pictures that he thought would prove to Werner that he was who he said he was. One of them were taken at Werner's 12th birthday party. The latter was blowing out the candles on the cake and he roped into Ryan to help him. One was taken when Ryan had cancer, and Werner had scooped him up in his arms. One was taken last year at the beach with his mom's old throw away camera. Ryan then retrieved his digital camera aswell, making sure that where was still loads of pics on it that Werner could not at. Hopefully, one of them would jog his memory.

In the meanwhile, Werner was getting some much needed rest, but for the hell of it, he couldn't get to sleep. In his mindseye, the images of the older dude and the younger dude kept flashing before him. He was told the older man was his father. And that the young dude was his best friend. He closed his eyes painfully. Why the hell couldn't he remember them?? Surely he had a mother aswell?? Why haven't she been here yet? His head was starting to hurt and he stopped trying to picture them. Just then a woman walked in followed by a very attractive young girl.

"Young Mr Cleverley, its so good to see you up and about! Im Doctor Rachel Volhanten, I was the neurosurgeon who performed your operation. So relax, you're in good hands. I know it's not visiting hours already, and that you might not remember her, but my daughter is a good friend of yours at school, and wanted to say hi. Okay, Franzette, only five minutes, you hear? He needs to rest."

As Doctor Volhanten made her way out, Franzette placed herself into the chair next to Werner's bed. The latter only started at her, trying to place her somewhere in his hidden memories but nothing came to mind.

"Wow...my mom was right. You don't remember me at all, do you, Werner?" she asked, quite astonished.

"I'm...I'm sorry, I really am. I'm trying to but..." Werner said before his head started to hurt again, which made him stop speaking. His tongue also felt very heavy.

"That's okay. You'll get better. Let me fill you in some...I'm Franzette, I'm one of your friends at school. We wrote our last exam today. Its just this one more week and then its the holidays."

"Was I supposed to be writing those exams aswell?"

"Uhm...yeah...sorry but you asked! Im sure the school people will allow you to write again due to the circumstances."

Werner pressed his palm on his forehead to somehow try and stop the pain that was dancing through it. It was like he couldn't quite focus.

"Franzette, right? What the hell happened that day? The day that I ended up here? My dad...well the man that says he's my dad, just said it was a car accident."

"It was, Werner. Me and Mom were driving right behind the car that hit you. We didn't see you being hit, but we heard it. Mom then called the ambulance when I told her who you were. You've been in a coma for well over a month."

"Tell me, do I have a best friend?" Werner asked, picturing the younger dude's face in his mind.

"Oh yes, his name is Ryan Black. You guys are like inseperable!"

So then they both were telling me the truth, Werner thought.

"Do I have like...a girlfriend or something? I mean, I've lost my memory and shit, but I'm still a guy...you know?"

It was like a light of hope had flashed on in Franzette's eyes. She always had a crush on his guy. She used to dream of the day that he would ask her to Prom. Ofcourse that never happened. Werner was never seen with a girl. She was pretty damn sure that he was single. This was her big chance. It was now or never...

"Uhm...to tell you the truth...me and you...we had a secret relationship."

"Me and you? Jeez...okay...but why was it secret?"

Franzette thought for a moment before answering.

"Because I was not quite in your league, Werner. You were popular and good at sports. I was just a normal girl who prefers to be at home instead of going to parties. We both decided it was better if our relationship was kept a secret."

While Werner was processing that, Franzette closed her eyes and hoped that she would never be caught out. The story she just lied to Werner about makes absolute sence. She loved Werner Cleverley so much. She would do anything for them to be together.

Werner looked through all the photos that Ryan brought carefully, willing himself to remember something of what he saw before him. Finally he threw the photos to the floor in sheer desperation of not being able to remember anything.

"FUCK THIS!!" he screamed, before Doctor Volhanten, who was in the next room with a patient, entered his.

"What on earth is going on here?" she demanded, but when she saw the pictures laying on the floor, she knew the answer immediately.

"Werner, I know its hard. But you cannot go screaming around like that. This is a hospital afterall," she said sympatetically before leaving the room, closing the door. Ryan immediately began to pick up the pictures that was scattered around the floor.

"I'm...I'm sorry..."

Ryan stood up and saw the tears streaming down Werner's face. Immediately he flung himself at the boy he loved and held him close. Oh how many times didn't they just cuddle and caress eachother like this? Sex wasn't always needed. Loads of times, just being close to eachother was more than enough. Their love was that strong. Remembering what Uncle Jake warned him about, he reluctantly let go of Werner who was wiping his tears away angrily.

"Dude, you will get better, you will start recognising people and things. Just give it time, its just the first day..."

"Well its a day too long, Ryan! I didn't recognise my own dad or my best friend! If that Franzette girl didn't confirmed it to me, I would even have bothered looking at those photos."

"Franzette was here? I didn't see her when we arrived?" Ryan asked with a frown in his face.

"Her mom is the doctor who treated me. She came to see me about three hours ago. Ryan...look man, those pics you showed me, okay I believe you that we are best friends for a fucking long time. I really do. BUT...fuck dude, I don't remember ANY of that. I can't picture myself hanging out with you or doing stuff with you like that. I don't know what to do..."

Ryan took a DEEP breath. Ofcourse he hoped that somehow Werner would have remembered something from the photos. He prayed to God for guidance before saying:

"Well dude, I'm not gonna give up on my best friend. You may not remember me, but I do, and all the good times we had over the years. You are just gonna have to get to know me all over again. Well...that's if you want to."

Werner picked up the digital camera from the table and once again glanced through the pics on there. Each one of them showed and proved to him that Ryan was his best friend. He at least owed it to Ryan to try and get to know him again.

"Yeah man...I will try."

"Great, pal. I'm just gonna get me a coffee or something, I'll be right back."

As Ryan made his way to the cafeteria, he felt a sence of sadness. Its gonna be a long time, before he can finally tell Werner that they were gay and in a relationship. As the waitress gave him the steaming cup of coffee, he realised that Werner was totally different from before the accident. There was just something strange about him and it was NOT just the Amnesia. Ryan shook his head. He prayed that he would be able to re-establish a connection with his friend. When he entered Werner's bedroom, he saw Uncle Jake sitting in the chair next to the bed. He quickly placed his fingers before his mouth and winked at Werner. The poor boy was finally asleep, clearly dog tired of everything that had happened and what he had to discover that day. Jacob signaled to Ryan that he was going down to the parking lot so long. When they were alone once more, Ryan carefully took a sip of the hot coffee, before looking at Werner's sleeping face.

A single tear rolled down the teenager face and dripped onto the coffee lid.

"Please...remember me..." Ryan whispered before quickly running out of the room.
