Quiet Things No One Seems to Know
"That will be seven dollars" The cashier spoke as I fished out my wallet. "Thank you" she said as I was buzzed into the building. The overpowering smells of popcorn, and grease filled my nose as I entered the skating rink. Some heavy pop music was blaring over the speakers as I sat down on the bench and kicked my shoes off. Very slowly I put on each skate and laced them up.
"Welcome to the Friday night skate ladies and gentlemen it's an all skate out there, so let's go in the regular direction and have some fun" The DJ stated as a rush of young middle school kids flooded the skating rink floor, I rolled my skates along the purple and green carpet to get the feel of my skates. I skated over to the entrance of the floor and off I was. Not knowing that this night would be the night that would change my life.
My birth certificate states: Greyson Anthony Iverson, I am 17 years old with brown hair that falls just before my eyes. My brown hair makes a nice contrast to my blue eyes that set off my white smile. Most people say that my face looks like a young James Dean. I love to roller skate, I think that there is no better way to be with yourself then to have wind blowing in your hair, and the feeling of your feet powering you around the rink. It's a hidden passion of mine that I'm sure would get a few laughs from classmates and eve friends of mine, so I hide this part of my life from them, and yet every Friday night you can find me at the skate lounge.
"Watch out!" I heard from behind. In that second I crashed with a hard figure and went flying to the ground.
"What the fuck was that all about?" I asked as I got up off the rink floor.
"I'm sorry; this is my first time trying to skate" A middle school kid said as I helped him off the floor.
"It's no problem at all, just watch where you are going next time" I said. After the crash I decided to take a break so I headed to the food court. After downing some nachos and skating for another hour or so, I started to pack up after they called couple skate. For me love, and relationships were a big waste of time, I believe that love is a game, and it is a game that I do not feel like playing anymore so I refrain from it, but no one chooses when love will hit them...and it was about to hit me hard.
"Damnit" I whispered as I walked outside to a down pour
"I would have punched that little kid in the face" I heard someone say
"What kid?" I asked
"The one that knocked you over, I could tell that you were in a groove and that he knocked you off...literally" he said with a healthy chuckle.
"Well it's whatever; I'm not the violent type." I said as I reached for my keys. I looked up at the kid I was talking to, I do not know if it was the rain, or just him but he was stunning. He had on a black hoodie that was draped perfectly over his body; he had jet black hair that was nestled under a red beanie. He had piercing green eyes and a face that you could tell that he would be trouble... I fumbled a little bit as he took a drag of his cigarette and then blew out the smoke.
"Mind if I catch a ride?" he asked as he flicked his cigarette and licked his pretty pink lips.
"Well I usually shouldn't pick up strangers" I said hoping he could see through my fakeness.
"Jones" he said to me as he extended his hand.
"Greyson" I said grasping his wet hand, "but you can call me Grey." I said as I unlocked my car and started walking towards my vehicle with Jones in tow.
"Hey bro, thanks for the ride" Jones said as he grabbed my cd collection.
"It's whatever..." I said as I started my car up and turned on the windshield wipers.
"Is everything whatever with you?" Jones asked me as he put in a cd.
"It is when it comes to you, I don't know you and you don't know me so that's a pretty bold assumption." I stated back
"Yeah well judging from your cd collection I bet I could tell everything about you." Jones spoke as he lit up another cigarette. He didn't even wait for a response before he started to read me like a book, " you are a quiet person, who likes to have his own space and do things on your own time, and also I bet that you are a scorned lover who thinks that they know everything about anything, and have way to high of standards." He said blowing out the smoke he was holding. I didn't say anything, I was not going to give this...this boy an opportunity to be right.
"And by your silence I would say that I am correct?" He said with a smile.
"No" was the only thing I said back
"No?" he asked
"you forgot that I hate smoking" I said as I reached for his cigarette and tossed it out into the rain, the same thing I wish I could do to him right now.
"You know-" Jones started before I cut him off. "No I don't know, I don't want to know, just tell me where to drop you off at." I said as I focused on the road, afraid to look at him, or over at him for fear that he would read me even more.
"You can drop me off anywhere" He said reaching for another smoke
"Just tell me where to drop you off at please." I pleaded wanting to end this horrible and uncomfortable ride as soon as possible.
"Are you hungry? We can get something to eat." Jones suggested. Even though he had already pissed me off, there was something about him, and what he said about me that had some kind of...honesty to it that along with the anger I had to give respect to.
"No I don't think I am hungry" I stated as of matter of factly
"Yeah right, let's get something to eat bro, I'll pay it's on me" he said to me as he lit his second cigarette.
"Can you please not smoke in my car" I asked him
"The smoke is going out the window." He responded back to me challenging me
"You do know that it is raining outside, and that you are a guest in my car?" I challenged right back.
"Can you be a guest in someone's car?" he asked, "hey turn into this parking lot, this stand has killer burgers." Jones said as I made a turn into the parking lot.
"Welcome to Roy's burgers what can I get for you." The employee asked through the speaker box. Turning down the music I rolled down my window.
"I have never been here before" I said as Jones climbed in my lap. His hair was inches from my nose as I took in a breath and closed my eyes. His strong sent of musk and rain was giving me a boner, and not to mention how he put his hand in between my legs to keep himself balanced.
"Yeah can we get two double bacon cheeseburgers please with a side of fries." Jones said into the box. After getting our total, and our food I found a parking space in the parking lot as we started to eat.
"How old are you Greyson?" Jones asked me.
"I'm 17, and the name is Grey." I said back to him with a full mouth.
"It's whatever..." He said back to me, with a hint of a smile.
"Do you go to school?" Jones asked me as we both reached into the bag for some fries, I gave him a go ahead look, while he gave me a smile.
"Yes, I am graduating from High School in December." I said while taking a drink, " I am going to work until I go off to college in August."
"That's pretty cool, still living at home?" Jones asked with a nasty onion flavored burp.
"Excuse you, and no I do not, I have my own apartment, my parents moved away for my dad's job and I didn't- wait why am I telling you all of this?" I said as I started the car back up, "where am I taking you Jones?" I said as I reversed
"Just drop me off back at the skating rink." He responded. The rest of the ride back was quiet, I think he knew that he struck a nerve with me, and that I was not in the mood to be messed with any further.
"Here you go" I said as I reached the skate rink.
"Thanks for having dinner with me." He said as he extended his hand. "Maybe we can do it some other time?" he asked me while getting out of my car and back into the rain. I gave no response but instead reversed and headed towards my place, my home, where it was mine and no one would challenge or judge me.
Dear Journal,
Does anyone realize that love is a joke? That nothing comes good out of it? It's like a never ending battle that you cannot win, a sinking ship, a curse...and yet every night when I lay in bed, all I can think about is someone to share it with, and someone to love me...
Ooooooohh snap son, did you like it? Did you hate it? Are you on the fence? Let me know!
A.J Storm
