Rainy Night

Chapter 3

Mark called and got an appointment for us with my doctor. He wanted to start my physical therapy but wanted to do it under the guidance of my doctor..Dr. Tom was very happy to work with us. "Guys, I would like to run a whole battery of test again. There must be something, that the first testing is not telling us. I know there is something causing the paralysis. It is hiding and we'll just have to dig it out."

"I agree 100%." said Mark.

"I would like to start with a MRI, Cat Scan, and Ultra Sound of the neck. I am sure that we have a pinched nerve or nerves somewhere. I just don't know why they didn't show during the first examination. They probably did and we just over-looked them somehow. Of course, there was a lot of swelling that may have covered something up."

"When do we start?" I asked.

"How does today sound? I'll call the hospital and set up an appointment."

"Start making the calls. I am sure Mark is just raring to start putting me through the paces. I just hope that all of you can get rid of my paralysis. I don't relish a life time in this condition."

"Just don't get your hopes up too high. Something could always go wrong or it might just be your destiny to go through life paralyzed. I certainly hope not. I want to look on the bright side and say we will find the problem and will be able to fixed it."

"Nothing would please me more. I certainly hope that you're right.

"Dr. Tom had the receptionist make a call to the hospital.

"Everything is all set. Mark use the emergency entrance. Someone will be there to take Herb upstairs and get him ready for his `fun'. Mark, you have 35 minutes before check-in. If you need to go get stuff for Herb's stay, you had better hurry."

"Not a problem, I have everything he will need in the van. Herb, If we leave now, we can stop at Sonic and get a slushy."

"Sounds good to me. Let's go!"

Mark checked me into the hospital and got me in my room. A nurse and Mark rolled my bed to the imaging room and my testing began. After what seemed like an eternity, I was taken back to my room and placed in bed. Dr. Tom, Mark and I would go over the results tomorrow morning and determine our next plan of action.

"I think I will bid you adios. Dr. Tom and I will see you in the morning."

"Later! Be sure to call my sisters and let them know what is going on with me. I am up to all the visitors that want to come see me."

I had just finished breakfast, when Dr. Tom and Mark arrived. After a short greeting Dr. Tom said, "We'll wheel you to a conference room that is equipped with all the machines we will need to look at all the test that were run yesterday. I haven't seen them yet, so we will all be looking at them together."

"Cross you fingers, toes, legs or any thing else that you can cross and hope for the best," said Mark.

"That won't be necessary. I spent all night in prayer. I know that the I have more power on my side than crossed fingers."

"I said a couple myself, so maybe between the two of us, we may have done some good," Mark said.We were just getting ready to leave when Carol, Mary and the kids walked in. Doctor, Would it be ok if Carol and Mary went with us. Maybe we could get a nurse or someone to watch the kids until we return."

"Not a problem. I would be happy to have them join us. I will have the floor nurse watch the kids until a volunteer arrives and takes them to the play room.

"Mark hoisted the kids up one at a time for them to kiss me. In a few minutes we were on our way.My sisters and Dr. Tom walked ahead of us and I took the opportunity to grab Mark in the crotch. "If you do that one more time, I'll push you in a room somewhere and use your ass for my selfish pleasure. We will just forget about going to the conference room.:"No way! I will be good after I have one more feel. Mark, you have a hard-on.

" Once inside the room, Dr. Tom said, "I want to make it very clear, I don't know what we are going to find. It may be good news and on the other end of the scale, bad news. We may find that nothing can be done to correct your condition and you may remained in a paralyzed state that you are in now. Hopefully we will discover something that can be corrected. So be prepared for anything."

" Dr. Tom, I have to know one way or the other. I have convinced myself to accept what every you find. So let's get started. The sooner the better.

"Dr. Tom turned on the MRI machine first. Of course, it started at my feet and started working up my body. He would stop at every frame and look at it very carefully. He didn't find anything up to my hips. He said that my paralysis would be below the cause and that he didn't expect to find anything down below the hips.

"The spinal column is divided into four sections. We have just gone through the sacral nerve section. I really didn't expect to find anything here. It is to low to cause the paralysis. So let's look at the next section, the Lumbar nerves. Again, I don't expect to find anything. A lot of the back pain originates here."

"The Lumbar region is clear. I see nothing here to be concerned with. The are no ruptured disc or any that are inflamed. I would have been surprised to find any thing to cause the paralysis here. Still way to low. The next section, Thoracic, is the one I am really concerned with because problems in the lower section can cause paralysis in the upper sections, arms and upper body.

"Tom continued with the MRI and got it to the Thoracic section. He would advance very slowly now and would examine each vertebra very carefully before moving on to the next one.T-12 clearT-11 clearT-10 clear"We found it! Just look at the size of that bone fragment and it is pressing against the spinal cord.. Herb, don't set your hopes too high but this certainly looks promising.!" Shouted Dr. Tom. "Let's continue our search just to make sure there is not another culprit hiding somewhere.

" Mary and Carol started crying. Mark, Mary, and Carol all started dancing around the room. The rest of the MRI , the Cat Scan, and the ultra-sound did not show anything new. In fact, they all looked normal. What they did show was wounds from the accident that had almost completely healed themselves. The ribs that were broken had mended and looked in good shape.

"Mark, take one end of the bed and I'll take the other and we can move Herb back to his room. "I know the head nurse is going to chew our butts out for not calling for a couple of orderlies to move Herb. She has probably had a rough day and needs to let off a little steam," laughed Dr. Tom. "We are both big boys and can take everything she dishes out. Just remember she is only doing her job and she is one of the best!"After we got back into the room I asked, "What kind of agenda am I looking at now?"

"I think we need wait another four weeks to let you body completely heal. Then the first thing that we will have to do is take part of your hipbone, freeze it to be used later to repair T-9. One good thing about bones is they will heal and grow new tissue. Then we will go back in and remove the bone fragment and repair the vertebrae. Sew you up and play the waiting game. If all goes as planned, I can see you WALKING! "What are my chances of walking again?"

"I would say better that 90%. Pretty good odds anyway. Right now it is just wait and play the waiting game."

"After the surgeries, how long before I see results?"

"You might have some feeling return shortly after the operation. The complete healing may take up to 6 months. Right now, I am going to release you and wait for you scheduled surgeries. Until then, go home and relax and think happy thoughts and don't play the what `if' game."
