Chapter 5: Double Black
I remember that night after Ian left with crystal clarity. For the first time in my whole life it seemed that there was someone willing to be my friend, and that he thought I was worth it. I slept like a baby and I felt like nobody not Mr. Greene, not Corey or anyone else could bring me down.
The weekend was grueling but I kept motivated as my Dad put me through his paces and I learned move after move and spent hours building up endurance. It was intense and although he and I had our difference in the past I had to conceded that he was a great teacher and I absorbed everything he was showing me and we spared we dueled and it was exhausting and long, but by the time Monday rolled around I felt stronger and much more confident about dealing with Corey.
Monday morning I practiced swimming and while I was gliding through the water I let my mind wander to Ian and to school and other things. It was peaceful, I was always interested in astronomy but stargazing left my mind blank, swimming allowed my mind to focus and tackle problems on singularly.
I got out of the water and up to the porch and my dad handed me a towel.
"Ready for another garage round?" he asked me giving me a smile
"As I'll ever be, ready for me to kick your butt old man?" I asked back and Dad just gave me a smile and a pat on the arm.
We went into the garage and Dad got onto the mats, I took a moment to throw on some sweats over my bathing suit and got onto the mats with him.
"Alright son we're almost done, I just wanted to teach you about..." my dad was suddenly interrupted by the doorbell.
"Wait a sec I'll go get it" I jogged out of the garage and turned around the corner and opened the front door and was surprised to see Ian waiting on the doorstep.
"Is it that time already?" I asked looking behind me to check the clock. I could hardly believe I spent most of the morning swimming and indeed school had just let out.
"Hi Raven..." Ian looked down "I brought your work... I... I can go..."
I sighed; the boy looked too damn cute
"Come in" I said "my dad and I were just practicing in the garage" I said leading the way
My dad waved as we came in and Ian glanced around the converted space and gave a small smile
"Working out?" Ian supplied a guess
"I'm teaching him basics in self defense, boxing and some karate" my dad answered
"You know karate?" Ian asked my dad
"I was a black belt" my dad answered
"Mind if we spar?" Ian asked
My dad seemed kind of shocked but nodded and Ian took off his backpack and jacket and took off his jeans revealing a pair of long swimming trunks. They both got onto the mat and Ian crouch down into a stance. My dad's eyes got a little large but he took his own stance.
Suddenly they sprang at the same time and in a flurry of punches and kick they danced on the mat and then Ian sprang leaping into the air and with his leg caught my dad in the neck and sent him crashing to the floor. Ian came down on top of him and pulled him into a lock.
The round was over and Ian jumped up and helped my dad up and they both bowed to each other and my Dad actually smiled.
"Thanks for toying with me" my dad said giving Ian a small nudge
"Honestly for someone being so out of practice as you claim you really weren't that bad, you're definitely not someone I'd want to cross in a dark alley that's for sure" Ian smiled back
"What just happened?" I asked my dad
"Your friend here is a black belt or better himself" my dad supplied
"I'm a double" Ian answered
"I don't doubt it" my dad laughed "why don't you give Dustin here a few pointers?"
"Sure" Ian said looking at me giving me a huge smile
`Oh shit' I thought
We got onto the mat and my mind focused to what my dad had taught me. Slow, cripple, destroy.
Ian bowed to me so I did the same. This time Ian did not take a stance he simply moved himself into a ready position.
His first swing was direct and I deflected with a counter of my own, which he in turn countered. In this position it's normal to switch to a grapple so I did which he also countered. Ian stepped back
"Good" Ian smiled "again!"
He came at me again but this time it was much faster his direct attack I blocked and this time tried to counter with a lower kick which he avoided and then I saw his foot spin towards my face I ducked down and with all my might kicked off the mat and used that energy so throw myself backwards kicking out launching myself into a back-flip. I watched the world spin by just like the many times I had done this same thing in gymnastics. While in motion I felt my foot connect with something solid and when my feet hit the floor again I crouched into a defensive position and looked up to see Ian holding his mouth with a hint of blood on his cheek.
I immediately stood and rushed over to him
"Ian are you alright, oh god I'm so sorry I..." I tried comforting him but I was shocked when Ian pulled his hand away showing me his lip.
"That was BRILLANT!" Ian smiled showing off his bloody face with a huge smile which didn't quite have the same effect on me as before.
"I'm so sorry I..."
"You're sorry?" Ian asked incredulously "that was awesome; you decided to skip the basics and teach him roundhouse kicks?" Ian directed to my dad who was fighting to keep back a smile
"He's never done that before" my dad said looking at me surprised "though it was very impressive"
"You're a natural" Ian smiled at me again and looked at my face "Dustin calm down I just bit my lip when you clipped me, I'm fine really"
I calmed a little
"Let's go get you cleaned up"
We went into the kitchen and I got a damp paper towel for Ian who took it gratefully and began wiping his mouth
"So where did you..." Ian paused to wipe is lip "did you learn... to do that crazy flip?" Ian asked
"Well, come over here" I said motioning him to come into the living room so we could get to the back deck.
The back deck ran the entire length of the house and was probably the only place I could even attempt what I was going to do. I moved one of the chairs in my passing
"Stay there" I directed to Ian and my dad held Ian's shoulder as I walked down the deck to the other end.
I took a look down my path it was clear. Pushing off the railing for a boost I took two running strides I began my tumble end over end and using my momentum off my third pass I launched myself up into a double back-flip and landed squarely bouncing from the impact of the wood and caught myself with the railing of the deck.
Ian's face lit up
"That was amazing... it was superb... it was... just... oh wow Dustin that was just so cool" Ian said "I wish I could do that"
"I can't even begin to tell you how expensive those lessons were" my dad mumbled to Ian loud enough so I could hear. I turned my head away and went back inside
"I was in gymnastics until fifth grade and then I began swimming; my build was nearly just right so I excelled in swimming as well but then... I..."
"You don't need to explain to me..." Ian said
"No, I think I do... not for you exactly but for me..." I said walking over to the couch and sitting down
"I was scared, lonely I... kids called me a fag, queer... it's just... they were right you know? It only got worse with time because I tried to hide it and then Corey came along." I said
Ian and my dad took their own seats
"I think the worst day of my life was my birthday in the seventh grade" I said
My dad looked down at my statement
"We invited the whole gymnastics team and we decorated the house and invite all sorts of kids from his school. We bought a huge cake and made it all up as a huge to do." My dad said
"Sounds like fun" Ian said
"No one came" I announced
Ian's face turned ashen and he got up from his couch and came over to mine and sat down next to me and leaned in and gave me a hug around the shoulders.
"I know it's not much consolation to you, but I would have come" Ian whispered in my ear
"That actually means the world to me, you have a good heart, you are uncommonly kind" I leaned into his embrace and was comforted
"You sure you're not gay?" my dad asked Ian
"Yep, pretty sure, I'm just comfortable with myself" Ian said rubbing my back
"That's too bad, you would have made a nice looking couple... lets go back and spar" My dad said getting up and then helping us get up and we moved back in the garage.
Ian watched as my dad and I did a basic review and did some of your own sparing and boxing practices. But after the fifth time I was pinned to the mat he got up and walked over to me.
"I want to try something with you" Ian said to me and with a nod to my dad, my dad backed away and stood along the wall.
"Okay what are we going to do?" I asked
"Close your eyes" Ian commanded and I obeyed
To be honest I felt kind of silly standing in front of Ian with my eyes closed
"I want you to name me a time when your brain is at peace and you can focus" Ian said
"When I look up at the stars" I said almost at once
"No something better, you need to be doing something" Ian instructed
"When I swim I focus on breathing" I said
"Good enough" Ian said "I want you to pretend'" Ian over dramatized the word pretend' "that you are swimming basically I want you to put your mind in an area of total focus. Often people make the mistake of asking people to make their mind go blank, but in all honesty it is better to focus on a singular object or task, your task is swimming I want you to put your entire mind into the task of keeping your breathing even and the control of your arms and legs now focus!"
I started setting my mind into the task of swimming. I pictured my even breaths and the sound of the water rushing around me and the strokes of my arms and legs.
"Open your eyes" Ian said
The moment I opened my eyes the feeling was gone
"You lost it" Ian said
"You're right, I lost my concentration" I said
"Do it again and open your eyes when you are ready" Ian said
I did it again and set the task in my mind to swimming and focused all of my body and mind to the task and I felt a sense of calm wash over me again and a sense of control and balance took hold of me. I opened my eyes
Ian darted forward and I felt my body move but my mind was still swimming, breathing and moving. I spun around him and grappled him from behind which he countered and I attacked and still my mind was somewhere else. When I was in this state I could clearly think about what actions I needed to take but without really thinking about them. Ian was about to come in for another attack and I felt my feet spring off the mats and I literally hurtled over Ian grabbing his arm and spinning around managed to pin him on his back on the mat, my brain stopped swimming
Ian rolled out of the pin and turned and swung a lower kick and took my feet out from underneath me and the next thing I knew I was pinned to the floor with him over me.
"You lost your concentration again, you can really notice when someone is focused or not" Ian said "but that was fantastic otherwise your swimming and gymnastics disciplines make you a natural karate student, you could do very well with some classes and time."
"Thanks" I blushed
"That was really good Dusty" my dad came back over "you guys should take a break, will you be staying for dinner Ian?" my dad asked
"I'll need to call my dad but I don't see why not?" Ian said giving me a smile
"Good" My dad walked out of the garage
"Raven, I just wanted to make something clear to you."
"What's that?" I asked
"I know this is probably going to hurt your feelings in some ways but I really think it's for the best. I am not ashamed of being your friend, and you need to know that, I am YOUR FRIEND and I will be here for you when you need me." Ian said
"I know that Ian" I said not really understanding
"Well I think it would be best that while in school we not act overtly fond of each other as I think it would only increase Corey's harassment of you and make it impossible for you to join the swim team"
My heart sank and I began shaking
Ian rushed to me and gave me a hug
"NO RAVEN it's not like that, if I'm with Corey I can protect you and help you avoid him and keep his attention away from you. That way you can swim and not have to worry about yourself all the time." Ian said holding me
"Alright" I said. Personally I think the idea sucked but he could probably get me to agree to pretty much anything while holding me like that.
"So you're going to be a jerk to me in school?" I asked
Ian shifted uncomfortably in my arms and looked me in the eyes
"I know it's going to be hard for you, but it's hard for me too... being a closet friend to an openly gay guy" Ian said
I laughed at the irony
"Alright... friends" I gave him another squeeze
"Wouldn't have it any other way" he smiled at me
At that moment a feeling spread around me that I had never felt before. I felt a chill run through my body. It felt like someone had put an ice cube down the back of my shirt, but the feeling spread out to my arms and down into my hands.
"Are you alright?" Ian asked me
As quickly as the feeling came, it was suddenly gone
"Yea I'm fine" I said even though I was feeling a little nauseous
"Let's get out of here" he said and I followed him out of the garage.
