Chapter 5.
"Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup They slither while they pass They slip away across the universe Pools of sorrow Waves of joy are drifting through my open mind Possessing and caressing me" -the Beatles
A nervous Olli, felt as though he might vomit upon entering the classroom. He was slightly relieved when the room looked to be completely barren and Christian free. He would have a little time to prepare. Olli didn't see the thin redheaded teacher, until she made a slight movement at her desk.
"Hi. Sorry about earlier. I'm not usually late. This is my first day and I..." Olli stopped explaining himself when he saw the woman's stern expression. She didn't want to hear what he had to say. "I'll wait until the other one arrives so I don't have to make this speech twice." She said flatly, as she sharply gestured with her hand for Olli to take a seat.
He nodded and fidgeted with his book bag, before sliding into a chair to wait. Olli now understood the silence associated with the expression, `you could hear a pin drop.' He looked past the red-haired woman at a clock on the wall and then twisted his body to check the door behind him. Nothing. He was afraid to breathe too loudly, thinking that he might be scolded for it. Minutes later, the soft mutter of a laugh broke through the deafening silence.
Olli looked around for the culprit, before realizing that he had made the noise himself. He had been letting his thoughts wonder, trying to imagine the worst thing he could possibly do at the moment. He saw himself kicking off his black and white sneakers (to ensure he'd be as quiet as a mouse), tiptoeing through the classroom until he was behind the relaxed teacher and yelling something ridiculous into her ear to scare her. The top two candidates being: "I love me some bananas!" and "BOMBASTIC!"
Would she let out a little yelp? Would she throw him out immediately...or maybe even laugh? He couldn't help but giggle at the random inappropriateness of his mind. Olli tried to stop laughing as his giggle grew louder, but all attempts were futile. It was as if the more he tried to fight the urge, the stronger it grew. He saw that the woman at the desk was preparing her mouth for speech and he braced himself.
"Take a seat." She demanded. A confused Olli looked down at himself to make sure he hadn't actually been acting out his little fantasy. He was relieved and dumbfounded when he saw that he was still, very much, sitting. He then searched his instructor's face and realized she had not been speaking to him, but to whoever was coming up from behind him. `Christian.'
Olli felt an electric shock, when Christian's arm brushed against his own as he settled into the desk next to his. Christian had on a very serious face that Olli couldn't help but be drawn to. Christian wouldn't look at Olli. He sat staring forward, as the teacher shuffled some papers. Olli could feel major negative energy coming from the seat to his right.
"Hi." He said with a soft caution. Christian turned his head slightly and without making eye contact, returned the greeting dryly, as if he could care less that Olli had spoken to him. Christian thought that he had done a good job of seeming nonchalant about the unfortunate situation. He couldn't look at Olli, as much as he wanted to. It would mess everything up. If he had looked, he would have seen the hurt and utter disappointment on Olli's face, as he slowly took his now dimming eyes away from Christian.
"Blah blah blahdee blah!" The fire-haired woman was giving her, "you won't be late to my class again if I can help it," speech. Christian was breathing in the sent of Olli and was well aware of how close they were sitting. Only an inch of air separated their bodies. Christian wondered, `Will Olli notice if I move a little closer?'
He blushed at the thought of rubbing against the stranger's perfect arm. He discreetly glanced Olli's way and studied his handsome face, trying to memorize every feature. Olli bit the tip of his pen as he made an `I'm bored,' face. Christian caught it in the corner of his eye and was instantly jealous of the writing utensil. He didn't retain a single word that came out of the woman in front of him.
"Yadda yadda yadda!" The teacher was speaking, but Olli was intently listening to Christian's breathing. It was somehow comforting and was threatening to put him to sleep. He couldn't help but glance at the boy many times, just to make sure he was still adorable. Olli thought about pretending to drop something, so that he could catch Christian's eyes, but quickly dismissed the idea when he realized, `I'm an idiot'.
His imagination ran wild; he envisioned himself pouncing on Christian, pinning him to the desk and capturing his lips with his own. Olli bit his pen, as a substitution for Christian's inviting lips. Suddenly, two well manicured hands pressed down onto Olli's desk. He looked up and saw his teacher looking down at him; waiting for an answer to a question, Olli hadn't realized had been asked.
Christian saw a little fear in Olli's eyes and wondered if he too, had not been giving the woman his undivided attention. Olli pulled the pen out of his mouth and decided to be bold. "Yes." He hoped his answer was appropriate.
"Great! And what about you?" The woman was now directing the same question toward Christian. "Absolutely!" He said with conviction. "Ok then, you two are dismissed and I'll see you bright and early tomorrow morning." She gave them her first smile of the day. Christian felt a little guilty, it being undeserved.
As her students walked away from her, Sarah's smile widened. She was a smart woman and she knew she hadn't gotten through to the boys. She had felt a tension in the room from the second the slightly taller one entered, and saw that he had intentionally brushed up against the other boy, when he sat.
As she lectured them, she caught the many glances they were throwing one another. Sarah could tell that neither knew of the other's interest. As she watched them walk away, side by side and then awkwardly squeeze out the door, she was sure she had witnessed the beginning of a beautiful friendship; or just maybe...something more.
I just posted another Ollian fic entitled 'Connection' here in this archive. ;) And fyi, the umlauts that were used in 'Connection'(in some German words), didn't show up because Nifty requests that we send our fics with plain text. Oops. :P
