-This is a true story. Names and places have been changed. - Chapter 3: Downward Spiral

He flashed me a smile that melted me even further. "Great! I'll see you there at 7!"

It took me 2 years of Drama class to pull off me being enthusiastic about this.

"Great, see you then!" He left the building, happy as a clam. I closed my locker and leaned against it, groaning softly, and sliding down slightly. I blew a strand of blue hair from my face. I felt a big headache coming on. How the hell did I get myself into all of this mess, and how was I going to get out of it?

6:30. I'm on the phone with Rei.

"What do I do Rei?! This is too weird, even for me!"

"Max, calm down. You are blowing this way out of proportion. It's just you watching a baseball game, not a date. Relax, man."

"But Rei-"

" No buts Max! Just go to the game and do what you usually do; pretend you're actually interested and then blow them off at an unexpected moment."

(I don't REALLY do that...all that much.... ehehe... ()()>.>)

"Fine," I said, sighing. "I hope you're right."

"Don't hope Max, know." I could practically hear Rei smiling through the phone. "Bye, Max."

"Rei!"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks."

"Hey, no problem." Click. I tossed the phone on my bed and raided my closet on something to wear. I finally decided on a short sleeve sky blue shirt with Japanese kanji on the front of it, some black nylon running pants, and a gray plaid shirt (I seriously have like 20 of those), tying that around my waist. I slipped my jade malla beads and black watch on my wrist, and walked out the door, heading to the woods.

6:45. I had walked through the dense forest on a secret trail, and came up beside the high school and it's adjoining baseball field. 'I hope you know what you're doing, Max.' I thought to myself as I left the trail and headed to the field. I sat on one of the bleachers; a few seats away, some guys were throwing food and shit at each other. They were Adrian, Scott, Chris, Mark, and Bryan; some jerks from school. 'Oh, how mature,' I thought. 'These guys are like 2 years older than me, and here they are acting like a bunch of prepubescent children!' (If ya don't know what that means LOOK IT UP!)

I was startled, yet again, by a hand squeezing my shoulder. "Ahh!!" I turn to see Tyler in his Helena Hardhitters uniform (()() Hey, don't laugh. I'd like to see you come up with a better name.) "Tyler! You can't keep doing that!!"

"Sorry. Max, I was surprised to see that you actually came..."

Muttering under my breath: "So was I."

"Hey, when the game's over, we can go and hang out, if you want."

'Oh geez...he wants to hang out?!' "Um...I'll think about it."

" Okay. Well, see you after the game, hopefully!" With that, he jogs away and onto the field to practice. 'This is getting out of hand.' I thought.

8:15. Game's almost over. (Although you readers out there know me well enough now to figure I didn't pay a damn bit of attention to that game.) I'd brought my spellbook, so I could bone up on my technique. Even after 4 weeks, I'm barely Level One...V.V() Those guys I told you about? They spotted me at the game about halfway through it, so they've been throwing shit at me ever since, And I had had enough.

I whipped around and seething with anger, my eyes black as coal, I said: "Look, you special-ed. rejects! If you don't stop annoying the shit out of me right now, I'm going to come over there and slap you all like the bitches you are!" I turned back to my book, and the food assault had ended. Before I knew it though, I was being dragged into the parking lot, and then dumped on the ground. I dusted my self and stood up, laughing, the wind billowing my clothes and hair in all directions. I faced the 5 guys.

"Okay, look you guys, I know we got off on the wrong foot," I said laughing. "But come on, you don't want to piss me off tonight, I wouldn't want to have to kick all of your asses." This got a laugh from all of them (me being so short and all... whaaa!) and Adrian stepped up to me.

"Bring it on, fag." Very bad choice of words. I had just lost all of my tolerance for these people.

I take my spellbook and whap him across the face with it, punch him in the gut, then judo-flip him to the ground. At first, the others looked shocked, but they quickly shrugged that off.

"GET HIM!!!!!" They rushed me.

I do a kick flip off of Bryan's chest, landing behind Chris. I sweep his feet out from under him, and then kick him in the side once he hits the ground. I turn as Mark charges me. Backhanding him, I grab his arms and slide through his legs, getting up and then kicking him into the back, sending him to the ground. Adrian starts to get up, so I kick him in the face, and he's out. I jump up, doing a split kick, hitting Chris and Mark on either side of me, and I turn and jump, split-kicking again, this time, hitting Bryan and Scott. I spin around, backflipping out of the way as Scott tries to punch me, then I look behind me and beyond my amazement, Adrian is trying to get up, so I kick him in the side. AGAIN. Though I'm doing well, the numbers are catching up to me, and before I know it, Adrian is up and behind me; he grabs me by the wrists and lifts me off the ground.

"Have fun boys!!"

The air is knocked out of me as Scott punches me in the left side, followed by a punch from Bryan on my right side. Mark punches me three times in the stomach, making me keel over, only to be brought back up by Chris's backhand. Suddenly, I hear a bunch of shouting and I feel myself hit the ground, hearing the five guys run away. I can't tell who shouted out to them, because my eye is swollen too badly, and even if it wasn't, the vision of my right eye was too blurry. I hear someone call my name, and hear footsteps... The voice sounds familiar, but I'm in so much pain, I can't register in my brain who it is. After a few moments I'm in someone's arms, being carried somewhere.

"You're gonna be okay Max..." There's that voice again. Who is it? I try to speak, but all that comes out is a choked cry. I feel myself slipping; I can't hold on any longer; the pain's too much. The voice says, "Everything's gonna be OK."

My eyes roll back into my head and everything goes black. I cannot see, I cannot hear.

"Max? MAX!!"
