Ladies and gentlemen, I have returned with what may be the conclusion to this extraordinary new story. First off, if you are under the age of 18, live where it is unlawful to read this type of story, or find the notion of young adult women still in love with each other offensive and objectionable, then please do us a favor and leave for your own sakes and good. Any further questions? If not, then let us resume and hopefully conclude where we left off, shall we?
ROMY AND JULIE: THE SUMMER OF 1979-PART 2
by Keith
Saturday had come. Romy, Julie, and Jennifer were inside Romy's TransAm on their way to see the Muppet Movie. The air was warm for an early August day as the sun shined down upon the cars going northward on the Harbor Freeway towards Downtown Los Angeles. This was only the second time Jennifer was riding in the backseat of Romy's muscle car, and it was still black. This was a replica of the vehicle that was in the original Smokey and the Bandit movie a couple of years back. Anyway, the TransAm cruised its merry way up the Harbor Freeway until Exposition Park was within view. Jennifer, seated in back of Romy at the wheel pointed out the very attractions that park had hosted.
"Look, you guys! There's the Colosseum!"
"We know, Jennifer!"
"And the Museums of Natural History and Science and Industry, too!"
"We know, we know!" exclaimed the pair as they caught glimpse of the building that were to the left of them.
"Do you think we might be able to take a trip to the museum before school starts again, Julie?"
"Maybe, just maybe, Jennifer, but today, it's movie day between the three of us and we're not gonna let anything get in the way of that, right Romy?"
Julie looked at Romy who kept her eyes upon the road. She nodded her approval to the woman she loved very much with all her heart as she skillfully commandeered the TransAm. Romy had learned to become a careful and adept motorist, even while on the freeway as the siblings quietly allowed her to make their way past Exposition Park, the Shrine Auditorium, the car dealership that had Felix the Cat as its mascot, and of course, USC. The mood was calm, yet jubilant as they all made their way to the turn off that would take them to the Hollywood Freeway past Echo Park and all the way down to the turn off that was Sunset Boulevard. The KTTV/KTLA Television Studios were the indicator as the TransAm pulled up on the off ramp and prepared to make a left. The CineramaDome was just down the street past Denny's.
It did not take them too long until they had made their destination. All three of them could see it from where they were at. In fact, everyone could see it because it was right before everyone's eyes.
The CineramaDome was a good 50 feet in stature that highlighted the main attraction. There was a long line that stretched for nearly a mile as the TransAm pulled up into the parking space. Romy was handed the attendant the fee and they were let in. Once outside, the sun had shone down upon not only them, but everyone else in line for the movie. Romy was dressed in a red with tropical print campshirt, a pair of Jordache desginer jeans, and a pair of the newest Vans shoes she saved for this occassion. Julie was also dressed in a pair of Jordache jeans, too, but she had on a white with black ringer t-shirt and a pair of well worn sneakers as was her younger sister. Romy didn't mind that the siblings dressed alike, especially on this occassion. Julie bemused at the sight of a couple and their daughter and her friend in front of them. they had brought their Snoopy dolls with them to the showing as the line awaited its turn to be let in. The wait was a long one until at last it began moving towards the boxoffice window that was to the left side of the entrance. Families with kids were the main audience as they eagerly and even impatiently awaited their turn to buy their tickets and be allowed entry. It took some time until it was Romy and the siblings's turn to go up to the box office. Jennifer pitched in with her allowance money to help pay for admission and it did not take them much longer until they were finally inside the theatre.
The snack bar was smack right in the middle with the restrooms and stairs leading to the upper portion of seats to the right and left of them. They quickly did what they had to do and buy the snacks and it was finally time for them to make it up the stairs to the right of them to find their seats. The main auditorium was becoming packed with a vast majority of the audience being families with children and fans of the syndicated television series as the atmosphere was loud enough. After finding their seats at the top of the screening chamber, Romy looked to Julie for a last minute word with her.
"Wow! It's a good thing we came in the nick of time", said Romy to Julie as they both looked down to see the chairs filling up like crazy.
"I know, Romy. It was either today or wait 'til next week", replied Julie as they both quickly took a glimpse at Jennifer who was seated next to Julie on the other side.
"I wonder if it's gonna be just as good as Alien", speculated Romy to Julie.
"That one's a scary movie, Romy. This one supposed to be more family-oriented....by the looks of things", replied Julie as she took a brief glimpse down on the audience in the lower rows. Jennifer, on the other hand, was too excited for words as she tried to keep from squealing in anticipation of the main event until at last.....
The lights began to dim, the audience of parents and their children quieted down and the screen lit up. It was time for the show to begin....
About two hours later, the theatre let out. Plenty of smiling faces were to be had by the first batch of families in attendance of the Muppet Movie as they poured out of the CineramaDome on all sides through the exits. As soon as it was empty sufficiently did Romy and the siblings make their way out of the theatre. As they walked out and down the sidewalk back to the parking lot, Jennifer was too happy for words.
"Didn't you guys like it?"
"We liked it, we liked it, kid",exclaimed Romy relievedly as the younger of the trio kept within sight of her older sister and the woman she loved. While Jennifer was skipping merrily towards the booth that led into and out of the parking lot, Romy sneaked a kiss upon Julie's lips as they secretly held hands. They smiled at each other in a surprisingly intimate, though discreet fashion when Jennifer was not looking until....
A car full of highschoolers pulled up to them and cruised slowly by them until....
"Fags!", cried out one of the kids in the front seat of the car as he tossed a half full milkshake at them.
This caught them by surprise as it hit Julie firmly on the right side of her jeans staining them. Shocked and aghast, they both turned to fume at the passersby who had assaulted them with a dairy product as Romy screamed.
"Hey! What the hell's matter with you assholes?!"
But it was too late as the car full of high schoolers sped off down Sunset Boulevard. Quickly inspecting the mess that was splashed upon Julie's jeans, Romy could tell that she was quite upset as Jennifer scurried back to them.
"Julie, Julie! What's wrong?!"
"Oh, some young punk kids decided to ruin my pair of desginer jeans I'm wearing to the show with you guys. It's nothing."
"But you could've been hurt....bad. Maybe we should go home and tell mom and dad about what happened to you", suggested Jennifer.
Seeing the concern on her face, Romy calmly began to reassure Julie's kid sister.
"It's nothing serious, Jennifer. It was neither of our faults. Just those idiots who saw fit to make trouble for us...."
"But you coulda been...."
"Jennifer, please. It's all right. It's just a pair of jeans, albeit expensive ones. They can be replaced, we can't. Let's just the three of us go down to Westwood Village for a bite to eat before we take you back home because...."
"Don't tell me, you and Romy are gonna go out with each other later on tonight. Am I right?"
The 15-year old girl took an aurah of mischief as her older sister and Romy were taken aback by her precocial demeanor.
"Why you little scamp. How long did you know...."
"Remember telling me that you were in love with Romy, Julie? I understand completely, but please be careful because a lot of people are still sensitive to this sort of thing and I would not want anything bad to happen to either of you."
She made a point and drove the message home to both of them so from that moment onward, nothing more was said between them about the incident.
The TransAm was making good time until it arrived at Westwood Village. The commerce area by UCLA was packed with college students spending the day and their money at the movies and all sorts of restaurants. The Mann's Westwood was showing Alien when they arrived, but it would be a short stay because after lunch it would be time to take Jennifer home and for them to prepare for their date together.
It was around 5 when they got home. Julie told her of the kids who had thrown a milkshake at her jeans with a little help from Jennifer. She was relieved none of them were hurt and that she promised Julie she would help replace the pair of designer jeans in case they came out ruined in the washing machine. While the ladies were in Julie's room, Mr. Spencer had a word with Romy as they both sat down across from each other.
"I need to ask you something, Romaine."
"What is it?"
"Do you love my eldest daughter? Do you really, really love her?"
The man was serious and Romy could see it in his face so she told the truth to him.
"Sir, I love your daughter very, very much and would never do anything to endanger her or your youngest."
Mr. Spencer could see the honesty in Romy's deep blue eyes that were framed by a mane of the most luxuriant reddish-blonde hair that had covered her head.
"Why are you asking me this, Mr. Spencer?"
"I care deeply about Julie and I don't want her to get hurt or her heart broken, Romaine. I pray you understand what I am getting at."
"Of course, sir. I would do anything for her, even if it means giving up my life for her and Jennifer, Mr. Spencer."
"I'm glad you see it that way and believe me I only want what's best for her."
"You mean Julie, right?"
"Of course I mean Julie. I could not help but hear her mother on how taken our eldest daughter is of you. The missus and I have had a heart to heart talk with each other and with Julie about you, Romaine."
"Nothing bad, I hope."
"Of course not. You seem to be the stablest, most responsible person on the planet for Julie. I somehow knew that you and Julie had a thing for each other and it was not her mother's meddling that convinced me of that."
"Well, then, what convinced you, Mr. Spencer?"
"Let's just say that....I sorta knew of this, but I told not her mother of your relationship with Julie so it would be wise to leave it at that because believe me, we would like to talk to the both of you about your relationship, if you don't mind."
"No, not at all, sir", replied Romy as she and Mr. Spencer extended their hands towards each other for handshake just as the ladies of the house were just re-entering the front room from down the hall.
"Oh! I see you had a heart to heart with her father, Romaine", smiled Mrs. Spencer as the girls stood behind her and took in the moment between Romy and the man of the house.
It was much later in the evening when Romy and Julie left on their date. It was decided to try out an inexpensive Italian restaurant along Hawthorne Boulevard that was before the Liccorice Pizza record store, the place they first met nearly a year previous.
The atmosphere was dimly lit, perfectly suited for a romantic dinner by candlelight as Julie changed into a white tank-dress with a pair of flipflops on her feet. Romy was still dressed in that red campshirt and jeans when they walked up to the hostess to see if a table was available to them. They were in luck as she led them down the main dining area to a tiny little table in the way back of the restaurant nearest to the kitchen. As soon as they were seated, the hostess promised them that their waitress would be with them shortly and left to return to her post.
Finally alone together, Romy and Julie leaned a little closer to have an even deeper, more personal conversation about the events that had happened earlier today and the previous evening.
"I hope me and Lloyd did not disturb you with Veronica while you were both in the bathroom getting it on with each other."
"I did not know you two were listening in on us with your ears to the door, Romy."
"Sorry about that, but Lloyd insisted we listen in on you two."
"That's okay, I'm sure Veronica will be thinking of that moment for the rest of the summer", bemused Julie as she took a look at her menu.
"You ready to order, Jule?"
"I think I am....and just in time too...."
A waitress approached them to take down their orders.
After awhile, they were both sharing each other's entrees as Julie had the spaghetti and meatballs while Romy had the Shrimp Scampi. They had a good time tasting each other's meals, but they were still too young to drink legally as of yet, they ordered a pitcher of Coca-Cola with two wine chalices. They toasted to each other's success in the relationship and for the rest of the evening, it was shear heaven between them....
It was very late when both young ladies decided to take a cruise down to the beach. As the TransAm was parked, the young ladies were down in the water as the ocean splashed upon their feet. The moon shined down upon the sea as it crashed upon the shore in a rhythm that had lasted for millenniae. Taking each other by the hand, they twirled each other around until they nearly fell into the water, but managed to land upon the soft cool sand. It was at this moment that they looked into each other's eyes and just then, they embraced each other as they kissed. The passion they had for each other was on fire as the young ladies rolled around in the sand in each other's arms as they kissed until....
A police officer happened upon them as he stood before them as they looked innocently up at him.
"The beach is closed for the night, thought you ladies would like to know that."
"Oh, sorry officer, we were just kissing each other in the sand. We'll be leaving shortly."
"That's all right, ladies. You just be careful now, y'hear?"
"Okay, we will be."
As soon as the officer left them in peace, Romy and Julie got back on their feet and kissed each other one more time until they caught sight of the Redondo Beach Pier with the lights shining before them like a Christmas tree.
"Wanna go check out the pier?"
"Sure, as soon as we get our shoes back on our feet", said Julie to Romy as they took each other by the hand back to the TransAm.....
