SAM AND CHRIS
Chapter 2: The Roommate
"Sam," I heard from behind me as I started to open the dorm door. I turned around and saw Sawyer, my roommate, approaching.
"Hey, Sawyer," I replied turning to him.
"Your friend has a really nice car there," Sam ogled. "Who's he?"
"That's Chris," I replied. "I just met him this afternoon, and we had coffee."
"Good looking guy, too, Sam," Sawyer said with his shit eating grin that is a trade mark for Sawyer's smart ass comments.
"Yup," I replied.
"What's his story?" Sawyer asked. "Boyfriend material?"
Sawyer is turning out to be not only my roommate, but a terrific friend. He's a really handsome guy, too. He's about 5'10" tall with shaggy blond hair and intense blue eyes. His solid body with a slight dusting of blond hair on his chest, arms, and legs makes for pretty nice eye candy. But, he is straight! I had told Sawyer I was gay after the first day we met. I thought I should be as open as I could with my new roomie. Sawyer is from Evanston. His dad, Stephen Cunningham, is a futures broker. According to Sawyer, he works constantly. His mother, Elaine, teaches English at a high school in Evanston. He has a brother, Darren, about two years younger than him. They are the typical all American family of four, according to Sawyer.
"I don't know yet. I kinda like him, though." I answered.
We both walked through the door and to the elevator. Sawyer pushed the up button.
"You going to see him again?" Sawyer asked. Sawyer always wanted to know the scoop on everyone and everything.
"He's going to call me later tonight after he finishes something he has to do. We might do something tomorrow if we can both find the time," I offered.
"Where's he from?" Sawyer asked as he unlocked out dorm room door.
"Chicago," I replied. "He went to Francis Parker in Chicago. He's a junior this year."
"Shit, dude. You've hit pay dirt," Sawyer exclaimed. "He must have a lot of fucking money for his parents to afford Francis Parker."
"Actually," I said as I dumped my stuff on my desk and turned to sit on my bed so I could answer more of the questions I knew Sawyer was going to ask, "his grandparents. His parents sent him to live with his maternal grandparents after the rents found out he was gay. His parents are Baptists, I think. So, that would explain a lot."
Sawyer and I sat and talked about Chris and what he was like. I told him about the conversation we had over coffee. I know there would be 20,000 questions from Sawyer about Chris and what I was thinking and hoping. And, Sawyer didn't disappoint. The volley of questions continued for about 30 minutes.
Suddenly, we heard a knock on the door. Sawyer yelled through the door, "It's open!"
The door opened and in bounded Tracy and Rick—our dorm mates. Tracy lived on the floor below us and Rick down the hall on our floor.
"So, Sam," Tracy started, "who was that hot dude you drove up with? And, he has a Beamer. Tell me it's his and not his parent's."
I thought to myself, `Shit travels fast.'
"He's a friend I met this afternoon," I responded. "And, yes, it is his."
"Boyfriend?" Tracy asked.
"Tracy," I said, "I just met the dude. Don't go thinking about wedding invitations just yet."
"Well," Tracy began again, "he's cute, built, hot, studly, and obviously rich. How old is the Beamer?"
"Tracy," I started. "I didn't ask him how old his car was. It seems very new smelling though. The leather actually smells very, very nice."
"Leather?" Tracy added. "Kinky! I hope you're ready, Sam. He could be your ticket off the farm."
Tracy and Rick are two of the few people I've been hanging with since I arrived at school.
Let's face it. Tracy O'Malley is a girl who likes to be connected. She came from a really, really well-to-do family from Winnetka. Position and money are important to her. Her mother is `old money.' Her father, John A. O'Malley, is political—a State Senator. Her mother, Candice Breamner O'Malley, keeps busy with her charity work and other social commitments. His father is, well, a politician. This information I learned from Tracy during our first meeting at a dorm `get to know one another' social.
Rick Livingston is a much more subdued person. He's good looking, but much quieter and much... How should I say this? Less full of himself. Rick is about 5' 9" with brown hair. He's nice looking, but, as Tracy pointed out, needs to shed a few pounds. I like Tracy, but sometimes she can be a bit more high strung than one wants. Anyway, Rick is also from the Chicago area—Oak Park. They are actually related—second cousins or some such stuff. Rick has a gay brother who is married to another guy. They live in Boston and the brother is in grad school at MIT. The husband, according to Tracy, is a gorgeous hunk in med school at Harvard. I learned this, too, from Tracy during the same conversation I had with her at the social. Rick is quiet. Or, so it seems. Well, everyone appears quiet when Tracy is on stage.
"So, when are you going to see him again, Sam?" Tracy asked.
"I don't know, Tracy," I started to explain. "He's going to call me tonight."
"I'd love to meet him. He's just hot. He is gay, right?" Tracy asked.
"Yes," I said.
For the second time in a few minutes, I had to undergo the 20 questions routine. This time from Tracy.
"We have to go, Tracy. We need to get ready to have dinner with my parents. They should be in town in about 30 minutes." Rick finally summoned. Then, he turned to me and said, "Have a great time with your new friend."
After we exchanged `goodbyes,' Tracy and Rick left to do whatever it is Rick and Tracy do.
"It's good to see them come and it's good to see them go," Sawyer said when they finally left. "The noise level is less now, don't you think."
"It is definitely less," I responded.
"Okay," Sawyer said turning his attention to his computer. "I need help, Sam. This computer science homework is giving me fits. I don't even know where to begin. I'm a business major. Not a fucking CS geek! I just don't get it."
"I'll help, Sawyer," I replied. "Don't stress out. We'll get through it. You'll get the hang of it."
"You're a good roommate, Sam," Sawyer said. "However, before we tackle this C plus plus bullshit, I think I need nourishment. You hungry, Sam?"
"Getting there," I replied.
So, we gather our stuff and head out the door to the cafeteria downstairs. Sawyer and I talked on the way there. Well, Sawyer talked. I listen.
"I got a call from my Mom this afternoon," Sawyer informs me as we saunter to the cafeteria. "She wanted to know everything—and I mean everything—I've been doing. Doesn't call me for the entire two weeks I've been here and all of a sudden she needs to know what I've been doing. `Have you been eating right?' `Have you been studying?' `Have you met anyone?' `How's your roommate?' I'm surprised she didn't ask if I'd taken a shit."
"She's just concerned, Sawyer," I tried to reassure him as we gathered our food and headed toward an open table.
"I'm not sure, Sam," Sawyer continues. "I think Mom was feeling guilty for not calling me sooner. I've talked to my Dad several times. My little brother and I talk once or twice a day. Speaking of little brother, Sam. News flash! Darren has decided he might be gay."
"Wow! What brought this on?" I asked.
"Well, it seems there is this new kid who started school this semester. He's in a few classes with Darren. One is gym. Apparently, the dude, according to my little brother, is, in his words, `built and hung.' I've always thought Darren could be gay. He's a junior and doesn't seem interested in girls. Up until now, he has been `asexual.'" Sawyer added air quotes around this last word.
"But, all of a sudden, this Adonis has brought out feelings. I told him to wait and see what happens. He's not sure about this new kid. Doesn't know him very well. He doesn't even know if Mr. Goodlooking is gay. I told him to wait and see before making any judgments. Maybe you could talk to him, Sam."
"Me?" I ask with sort of a shocked look on my face.
"Of course!" Sawyer added. "You've been through things. You know, the coming out. Relationships. Getting beat up in school. All that shit. He needs a gay perspective." Sawyer said as he took a bit out of an apple.
"Gay perspective?" I question. "I even need help with being gay. It would be the blind leading the blind."
"I'd be really grateful if you talked to him sometime," Sawyer continued. "I thought about inviting him down some weekend. Would that be okay with you if he stayed with us? Darren could bring his sleeping bag and camp out on the floor."
"Sure," I responded. "It would be great to finally meet some of your family."
"Great! I'll ask him to think about an available weekend." Sawyer went on. "Now that I've been fed, are you ready to head back and do some real work? Maybe we could discuss this CS project."
"I'm done," I replied.
With that we both scooped up our trays and headed for the disposal area. We continued talking as we walked back to the room.
After we entered the room and deposited phones, keys, and other stuff on our respective desks, I asked, "Ready to tackle computer science?"
"Let's get this shit out of the way," Sawyer said looking a little bored.
We worked on Sawyer's computer science homework for about an hour. I tried to explain the desired outcome in simple terms. I think I was losing him, but I persevered. Finally, the concept seemed to sink in.
"I think I am beginning to understand this," Sawyer gratefully explained. "You are a very patient person, Sammie, my friend. You should be a teacher."
"I'm no teacher," I responded. "Computer stuff is just in my blood—that's all. I've been doing this kind of shit ever since I was 8 when I got my first laptop."
Suddenly, Sawyer's phone started to ring and he moved to answer it. "Darren! What's up little bro? I was just telling Sam a little earlier about your dilemma."
Sawyer listened to his brother for a few moments.
"Shit bro! He asked you out?" Sawyer exclaimed. "So he is gay?"
Sawyer listened to his brother for another few moments.
"Like I was telling Sam," Sawyer said into his phone, "maybe you should come down for a visit and talk to Sam. You have some things in common."
Again, Sawyer listened as his brother explained a few more things.
"Yea," Sawyer finally said into his phone, "Sam is gay. I told you that. He's been out since his junior year high school. He might be able to give you some advice on, you know, gay things, like coming out to the parents, friends."
Sawyer listened as Darren explained a few other things.
"Okay, bro," Sawyer again said into his phone. "Just let me know when you want to come down for a visit. By the way, how's Mom and Dad?"
Sawyer listened.
"Yea," Sawyer finally said. "I've talked to Dad several times. Mom finally called today."
Sawyer listened for a little while longer.
"Shit Darren!" Sawyer explained. "They never fight!"
Sawyer listened a little while longer.
"Okay, bro," Sawyer continued. "We can talk about this later. Keep me posted about Mom and Dad, though."
"Thanks. Bye." Sawyer said as he ended his phone call with his brother.
Sawyer turned his attention to me and said, "Fuck! Darren said my parents are fighting like warriors. They never fight, at least not in front of us."
"I hope it's not serious, Sawyer," I said. "Maybe it's just a minor issue."
"I hope," Sawyer said with a distracted tone.
We continued to study. We were both busily typing away on our respective computers.
Then my phone began to ping. I picked it up and there was a text from Chris: "Do you have time to talk now?"
"Yes," I texted back. "Call me when you're ready."
Almost immediately my phone began to ring and I answered hurriedly. "Chris! Good to hear from you. Finished with your stuff?"
"Yup," Chris replied. "It didn't take as long as I had expected. What's happening with you?"
"Sawyer and I have just been shooting the shit and working on his computer science homework he was having trouble with. I've been trying to write a paper for English Lit" I answered.
"You've been on my mind," followed Chris.
"Same here, Chris," I said. "I've been thinking about our conversation over coffee this afternoon."
"I'm glad you haven't forgotten me," Chris said. I could tell by his voice that he must have a devious grin on his face. "Want to do something tomorrow evening? Dinner maybe?"
"Sure. I'd like that," I replied.
"What if I pick you up around 7 tomorrow evening?" Chris asked.
"Sure. You want to come up to my room and meet my roommate Sawyer?" I asked.
"If I can find a place to park, I'd love to meet him." Chris replied.
"Okay. I'll see you around 7. My room is 404," I said.
"Terrific! Do you like pizza?" Chris asked.
"Every college kid likes pizza," I replied somewhat sarcastically.
"Good. I'm going to wear jeans and a t-shirt. I'm taking you to one of my favorite places." Chris said.
"I'll see you then. Bye." I said.
"Bye," Chris said as we ended our conversation.
I put my phone back on my desk and turned to Sawyer. "Will you be around at 7 tomorrow night? I'd like you to meet Chris."
"Sure. I'm not doing shit tomorrow night that I know of. At least one of us is getting lucky," Sawyer deadpanned. "Maybe you'll even get laid."
"We'll see, Sawyer. We'll see," I replied. "I've got to get some sleep. The day is finally creeping up on me. I'm going to take a shower and then hit the hay."
"I'll be right behind you, Dude," Sawyer said.
I pulled off my t-shirt and shucked my cargo shorts as I turned to grab a few shower items.
"Do all gay men go commando?" Sawyer asked.
"I don't know, Sawyer," I replied. "There are straight dudes who go commando. My straight friend from high school never wore underwear. Besides, I really don't know that many gay men at the moment."
"I think your luck is about to changed, Dude," Sawyer said with an ear-to-ear grin on his face.
I picked up my towel and headed towards our bathroom. `God the shower felt good,' I thought to myself as I finished the shower. I dried myself, flung my towel over my shoulder, and headed back to our room.
"Your turn," I said to Sawyer as he was standing by his bed in his boxers.
Sawyer dropped his boxers, grabbed his shower stuff, and headed in. When I first met Sawyer the first day we both moved into the dorm, I thought he might be a little prudish and stand-offish. I didn't think that for long, however. Sawyer certainly wasn't a prude. He doesn't think twice about being naked in my presence. Fuck, we both sleep naked, so it's a little hard to be modest! I draped the towel over my desk chair, pulled the covers back, and slid between the sheets. I picked up my tablet and began reading my e-mails. I hadn't done that for a few days.
I heard the water of the shower shut off and a few moments later, Sawyer came out of the bathroom. He stood in front of his bed and pulled down the blankets.
`He has a very nice butt,' I thought to myself.
"Sam?" Sawyer finally asked as he slipped into bed. He paused.
"Yes, Sawyer? Is something on your mind that you'd like to talk about?" I coaxed.
"Well, I'm sure other people have told you this... You have a really terrific body, Sam!" Sawyer finally said.
"Thank you, Sawyer! That's very nice of you to say. I didn't know if, being straight and all, you really noticed how much work I put into this body," I added.
"Who wouldn't notice! Your chest and arms are awesome! Anyway, I was thinking... Do you want to go the rec center and workout sometime?" Sawyer finally asked as he pulled the sheet over his chest. "Maybe you could show me how to do things that would make my body more like yours?"
"Sure! I'd love to!" I answered still reading e-mails on my tablet. "I need to start working out again. I can't let myself get gushy!"
"I think it would take a long time of not working out to get your body gushy! Maybe sometime next week after we're both finished with our classes?" Sawyer asked.
"I used to work out three times a week for an hour or two. I don't think I can afford that kind of time now. But, I get out of Chem 101 at 4 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday... We could go after that... I could work out my frustration with my asshole chemistry professor!" I replied as I stopped perusing my e-mail and put my tablet on the table near the bed.
"Cool! I'm going to need all the help I can get at the gym. I really don't know where to start! Anyway, enough for now. I have to get some shut eye," Sawyer added as he shut off the light near his bed.
"Yea! Me, too!" I agreed. I turned off the light and was asleep about two seconds afterward.
To be continued...
And, the next installment will have Sam and Chris "Getting better acquainted." That means there will finally be some sex involved.
