`Maybe I should have run after him naked' I thought. I wasted too much time trying to find my damn boxers and put them on and I shouldn't have listened to Drew's advice.
I was about to run after Kyle when Drew grabbed me and said, "Don't chase him, give him some space. John is with him, so you know he's not alone. He'll call you when he's ready to talk, so play it cool, and I'm willing to bet money that he took my car. You know he has to bring it back eventually, just wait."
"Play it cool? How the hell am I supposed to play it cool when I just cheated on my boyfriend! With you of all people? Oh God, I'm going to be sick."
"Relax. Besides, you said he wasn't your boyfriend yet. He technically has no claim to you."
"Just shut up." He sat silently on the bed watching me pace in my room for about ten minutes. I looked over at him and all he had on was a pair of boxers. "Put some damn clothes on!" I barked at him. He looked hurt by my tone, but he deserved it. "I can't take it!" I finally shouted. I had to call him, I had to make sure he was okay. I picked up my phone and dialed his number. I heard the familiar message and then the beep. "Kyle, why won't you pick up the phone? Come on, Kyle. Talk to me. Please. I love you. I'm sorry. I'm calling back again in five minutes, because I know you're going to listen to this message." I waited five minutes and then I called the number again. This time it went directly to voicemail. "Damn it!" I threw my phone against the wall and watched it break and fall to the floor in two pieces.
"Nice work Einstein." Drew joked.
I pointed my finger at him. "Shut it because I am not in the mood."
He put his arms in the air and said, "I surrender."
"Fuck you!"
"No thank you, I prefer fucking you," he said with a grin on his face.
That was it. I lost it. I charged across the room at him and jumped on him. I started hitting him and yelling at him, "I hate you! I hate you!" He put his hands up to protect his face and moved his body in to the fetal position. I hit him until my hands got tired, which was about two minutes after I started. I stood up and looked down at him. I regretted telling him to put on some clothes because I would have enjoyed seeing marks on him from my fist. He stayed in the fetal position for a few seconds, probably waiting for the next blow. When he realized I was done, he looked up at me. He looked in my eyes and I tried to give him the evil eye before I turned around and walked over to my broken cell phone. I picked up the half with the battery and the chip in it and took the chip out. Sometimes having a little bit of money had its perks. I walked over to my computer desk and opened the top drawer which contained two other cell phones I used. I picked one of them and put the chip in it. I sat down in the chair at the computer desk and stared at the phone. I thought staring at it long enough would cause it to ring.
My trance like state was ended when I heard Drew talking. "Hey John. Where are you guys?" I opened my mouth to say something, but he put his finger to his lips, telling me to be quiet. "Why can't you tell me? I won't tell Pat." "What? How can you say that? Do you really think I'm capable of doing something that awful?" "It just happened. We both regret it." I didn't mean to" John cut him off and said something. "Okay, so I did mean to, but not like this, never like this." "John! John!" He slammed his phone shut and looked at me. "He hung up."
"What did he say?"
"Nothing much, he thinks I planned this whole thing and I'm an asshole."
"Did you?"
"Of course not! I would never do anything so, so"
"Devious?"
"Yeah that."
I opened my phone and said, "John."
"What are you doing?"
"Calling John." John must have turned his phone off after dealing with Drew because his phone went straight to voicemail, too. I closed my phone. "Damn it!"
"Don't throw that one," warned Drew.
We both sat in silence for a few minutes before a thought entered my head. "What did you mean to do?"
"Huh?"
"When you were talking to John you said that you meant to do something."
"I did?"
"Don't play with me Drew, I am really not in the mood."
"I, um, I, well, I"
"Spit it out!"
"I wanted to have sex with you tonight and I wanted to break up you and Kyle, but you have to believe me that I didn't mean for it to happen like this."
"Why?"
"Because I was jealous."
"Of what?"
"Of you and Kyle. I always thought I would be your first boyfriend and then this guy comes out of nowhere and swoops down and takes you away. I just wanted you back."
"A, you never had me, and B, you're not gay."
"Well A, I beg to differ, and B, who says I'm not gay? How do you know that?"
"You told me."
"Well, things change." He stood up and walked towards me. He reached out and let his index finger trace a path along my cheek. "People change."
I ripped my face away from him. "I can't deal with this." I stood up and put on a pair of pants and a shirt.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"I'm leaving."
"But this is your house."
"But you're still in it."
"I'll leave."
"Don't bother," I told him as I grabbed my car keys and headed for the door. I got in my car and drove about five blocks away before I pulled over to the side of the road and called Chris' cell. The phone rang and went to his voicemail 4 times before Chris finally picked up one of my calls.
"This better be good," he said. I could still hear the sleep in his voice.
"Unlock your window, I'll be there in a few minutes."
"Don't be mad if I shoot you when you open the window." I was going to tell him `okay,' but he hung up the phone. A few minutes later, I was in his backyard grabbing the ladder he used to sneak Jessica in sometimes. I put the ladder against the house and climbed up to his window. I tried to push the window up but it wouldn't budge. I lightly tapped on the window and nothing happened. I knew Chris must have gone back to sleep. I was tempted to bang on the window, but I was afraid someone else might hear, so I settled for calling him.
"Hello," he said in one big yawn.
"Open the damn window or I'm going to break it."
"Stop playing around Pat. I'll talk to you later."
"Don't you hang up the phone! Look at the window you idiot!" I started tapping on the window.
"Is that you at my window?"
"Yes, now come let me in."
A few seconds later, he was standing at the window pulling it. "What the hell are you doing here?" he asked me through the phone. Once inside, I hung up my phone and he hung up his.
"It's been a long night." I told him. He got back in his bed and I got in it with him. My first thought was that this would look really bad, but then I realized no one would catch us, and even dumbo would know nothing was going on between me and Chris. That would be like doing my brother, if I had one, and I'm not in to incest. He turned to face me so I could tell him the story. Suddenly, he reached out and hit me.
"You've been drinking! I smell it all over you and your breath, whew. Did you drive over here like that? You know better, you could have killed someone, or worse even, you could have killed yourself."
I was tempted to be a smartass and say something like, `oh, so I'm no one then' but I knew he wouldn't get it because his mind was on other things, like what had me in my current state. "You know I don't drink and drive, but this was an emergency."
"And the kid you leave splattered all over the pavement wouldn't be?"
"Huh?" I looked at him for a minute trying to slow down my brain enough to process what he was saying. "Oh, I get it."
"You know how I feel about drunk drivers. You were there when we had to bury Craig. You know it's nothing to play around with."
Craig was his little brother. Some drunk driver hit their car when the family was on the way back from the movies one night and Craig didn't make it. That had been a rough time for Chris and I can honestly say that I felt his pain because Craig was like a little brother to me too. "I'm not drunk, Chris."
"That doesn't matter, you shouldn't have been drinking, but you didn't come here for a lecture, and I hope to get some sleep tonight, so tell me what's going on."
I told him the whole story, starting with what happened after he left. When I told him how I almost had a heart attack when Kyle walked in on us, I was shocked that he was less than supportive, "Well it would have served you right you little cheater."
"I already feel bad enough without you making it worse."
He pulled me close to him and said, "I know you do." I cried as I told him how Kyle wasn't answering his phone and how Drew had set me up, or at least in my mind, Drew set me up.
"Drew didn't set you up. He couldn't have known what time Kyle would arrive, that's just the way things worked out."
"Well thanks for being the voice of reason, but I'm still going to blame Drew for this whole thing if you don't mind."
"Well, I don't mind, but you're the most at fault. You're the one involved with Kyle."
"Sometimes I wish you would just lie to me."
"I love you way too much to do that. My eyes are trying to close on me, so this is what you need to do: you need to accept your responsibility and face up to it like a man, and stop crying and whining about what Drew did to you and go to sleep so we can both get some rest because there's nothing you can do right now."
"But"
"We'll talk about this some more in the morning," he said before wiping away some of my tears and turning around to face away from me. I didn't think I would be able to fall asleep, but I was. I talked to Chris in the morning and he told me to go home and wait until Kyle called because he would definitely call, even if it was just to curse me out.
I pulled in to my driveway and saw Kyle and John sitting on my front steps. I almost killed myself trying to get out of my car. I walked over to the steps and said hello.
John stood up and said, "I think I'll leave you two alone." He put his hand on Kyle's shoulder. "Call me if you need anything, I'll be right inside." John turned without acknowledging my presence and walked in to my house. c Lustyville 2006
