I woke up the next morning exactly where I needed to be: in Kyle's arms. He gave me a squeeze when he felt me move.
"What time is it?" I asked.
"Almost time for us to get up."
"Don't sound so excited," I teased.
"We have to go to school today."
His somber mood brought me down a few notches. "How bad do you think its going to be?"
"I'm not sure, but I'm prepared for the worst at school and probably a mixed reaction at practice."
"Really? I just assumed practice would be okay. Remember, after that whole Laurie fiasco, Jeremy and the rest of the team were behind us."
"Jeremy and his friends were behind us but what about the other guys? You know Marshall and Chris are pretty close with the football team."
He wasn't talking about my Chris, but the mention of the name reminded me that I still hadn't spoken to my Chris and I knew he needed me. "Oh shit!" I exclaimed.
"Don't worry. We can deal with them. We've got each other and our friends and"
"It's not that, it's Chris."
"Your Chris?" I laughed. "What?"
"I was thinking of him as my Chris and then you thought of him the same way."
"Well we do think alike, don't we?"
He stared in to my eyes and I knew what he was thinking, but I decided to flirt with him. "So what are you thinking right now?" I asked.
"I think a better question is if I know what you're thinking right now."
"Okay, so what am I thinking?"
"This." He kissed me. His mouth tasted sour, but I imagined mine tasted about the same. I smiled when he pulled back. He attacked my lips again. Soon he was on top of me grinding in to me and making me lose my mind. He started lowering himself down my body and things were just about to get interesting when there was a knock at the door.
"Kyle!"
His head shot up. "Yes Mom."
"Did you forget to set your alarm clock last night? The two of you should be up by now."
"Mom, we've got like ten minutes."
"There are two of you and you're not sharing a shower, so get up."
"Mom!"
She jiggled his door knob. "Open this door."
"Kyle stood up and walked over to open the door. As soon as he unlocked it, his mother came barging in. She turned on the light and examined the room. I felt guilty when her eyes found me under the sheet on the floor.
"Is that where you slept?"
I felt like I was being interrogated. "Yes."
"So where did you sleep, Ky" Her voice dropped off when she looked at him. "Where are your clothes?"
Kyle looked down at his naked body and turned red. His hands immediately moved to cover his private parts. He hurried to one of his drawers and took out a pair of boxers and put them on. Then he turned around and with his head hung low, he said, "I knew I was forgetting something," and gave a nervous laugh.
"This is no time for jokes young man. Why didn't you have on any clothes?"
"Well, see, I um"
"You what? Come on. Make it good."
"I got hot during the night and I took my boxers off and went back to sleep."
"So where did you sleep?"
"On my bed."
"Why are you lying?"
"I'm not lying. I slept on my bed."
His mother looked at me and said, "Why don't you go get in the shower."
"Yes, Mrs. Masters." I stood up holding the sheet against my naked body, trying to cover myself.
"Don't tell me you're naked, too!" she shouted.
"I'm sorry." I grabbed my bag and went to the bathroom with the sheet still around my waist.
I was about to close the bathroom door when I heard his mother say, "What kind of a fool do you take me for? Your bed doesn't have any covers on it yet you got so hot that you had to take off all of your clothes? Was that before or after you used your covers to make a bed on the floor for you and Pat?" I didn't want to hear anymore so I closed the door and went about my business in the bathroom.
When I returned to the room, the door was wide open and Kyle was on his bed staring at our pallet on the floor.
"What happened?" I asked as I sat beside him and dropped the sheet and my bag on the floor.
"She thinks we had sex."
"We did."
"Yeah, but she thinks we did. Do you know how embarrassing this is? And she said she had to tell my father."
"What's he going to do?"
"I don't know, but I really hope he doesn't overreact." Kyle got up and walked to his door. "I better get in the shower." He looked down and then he looked over at me. "Don't leave the room without me."
"Okay." He closed the door and I stayed on his bed for a few minutes. Soon I found myself entranced by the blanket on the floor. I thought about everything that happened the day before and then my thoughts replayed images of Kyle and I on the floor making love. I smiled to myself knowing that was what we had done: we made love. Nothing I had ever done with Drew could compare to what happened between me and Kyle.
I was off in my own memories when I felt fingers run through my hair. I jumped a little then relaxed against his touch. He smelled like Irish Spring soap. "That was a quick shower." I told him.
"I figured we might as well get this over with, plus I was a little afraid my father might come and try to talk to you." He kissed my forehead. "I didn't want you to have to face him alone."
"Is he that bad?"
"I guess not but he can be formidable when he wants to be."
"Has he ever hit you?"
"I haven't had a spanking since I was ten and it wasn't really a spanking, it was more of a tapping because he was afraid of hitting me too hard."
"Oh." I watched him as he put on his clothes and I had to remind myself not to get too aroused.
Once he was dressed, he looked at the clock and said, "At least they don't have much time to talk to us." He grabbed his keys. "Come on." I got my wallet and keys and followed him to the dining room.
"You boys missed breakfast."
"I know, Mom."
Kyle looked at his father, his father looked from Kyle to me, and I looked at the floor. "You know we need to talk."
"I know, Dad." Kyle said.
"We don't have time now, so you be sure to come straight home after practice."
"I can't. I'm supposed to take care of Nick until his mother gets home."
"Consider yourself relieved of duty. Your mother is going to be there with him all day and I'm sure she can stay a few extra hours until his mother gets home."
"Of course," his mother said.
"But I really wanted to see Nick today," Kyle whined.
"You should have thought about that before you broke the rules of this house."
"Yes, Dad."
"And as for you Mr. Hughes," his father paused and I took it as my cue to look up, "I want to talk to you this evening as well."
"Yes, sir."
"Now you boys are dismissed so hurry up and get to school. Mr. Harvey is probably waiting on you already."
Kyle took off quickly and didn't stop until his hand reached for a box of strawberry pop tarts in the kitchen. "I can't believe him," Kyle whispered in anger. "He knows how much Nick means to me." Kyle handed me the box of pop tarts. "Do you like yours toasted?"
"It doesn't matter."
"Okay, let's just go then."
I got out a package of pop tarts and gave the box to Kyle. He got himself a package and put the box back. I followed him outside thinking he might want to be alone and wondering if he would want to drive himself to school. My worries were hushed when he walked directly to the passenger side of my car and waited for me to hit the button and unlock the door. He sat and ate his breakfast in silence for the first few minutes of the ride.
"This day is going to suck," he announced.
"I know," I responded, hoping we could commiserate together.
We were parked in the lot at school before he spoke again, "Is this really worth it?"
My heart stopped. "You mean us?"
"No. I mean all the crap we're going to put up with today." He grabbed my hand and gazed pleadingly in my eyes, "We could always skip."
"How? Principal Harvey is waiting for us and I do believe he'll call your mother if we don't show up."
"Why do we have to check in with him anyway?"
"Because he told your mother he wanted to see us before we went to class." I took my keys out of the ignition. "We should go."
I got out the car and waited near the trunk for Kyle to get out. He stayed in a few seconds then he got out and stopped next to me. He looked terrified and tired. "This whole day is going to be a fight. Then I have to go home and deal with my father." He glanced off towards the school. "I really don't want any of this today."
"I know." I pulled him in to a hug which lasted all of two seconds before we were interrupted.
"Go home faggots!"
Kyle pulled away from me and we both looked at two football players leaning against a red truck. "Fuck them," Kyle whispered.
I turned to him. "What?"
"I said fuck them." He pushed me against my car and started kissing me. It took me a minute to catch up with him and kiss him back.
Someone whistled. Kyle let me up and he had a tentative smile on his face. "Good show," someone said.
I was shocked when I realized the person talking was Jeremy. "What are you doing here?"
"I figured if you guys could come so could I."
"You're not suspended?" Kyle asked.
"My friends and I each got a call from Principal Harvey last night. He told our parents we could come back today and he apologized for the misunderstanding."
"Do you have to meet with him before you go to class?"
"No."
"So it is just us," Kyle stated. "Why are we the only people who have to go see Harvey?"
"We're the reason all this mess is happening." I reminded him.
Jeremy walked with us in to the building where we were greeted by a scene from a movie. Our appearance in the hallway served as a conversation killer. Everyone stopped talking and stood there, watching us. It was horrible. Kyle took my hand and that caused people to start whispering. I didn't like the whispering, but it was definitely better than the silence. Jeremy said goodbye when we reached the door to the main office. "I don't want to see that man," he joked.
Kyle and I went in and the secretary pointed us to the principal's office. Kyle continued to hold my hand as we sauntered in the room. Principal Harvey was at his desk looking over some paperwork. He didn't even look up. "Close the door and have a seat." Kyle released my hand. I closed the door and we each sat in one of the principal's chairs. "I'm not going to lie to you. I wanted you guys out of my school but someone much higher than I, has a different opinion. So here is what we're going to do: you two are going to mind your own business and try to stay out of trouble, and I am going to tolerate your existence. The football players know not to pick on you guys but you have to handle everyone else on your own. Those are the rules and now you're free to go. Be sure to leave the door open."
Kyle looked at me with confusion on his face. "What do you mean handle everyone else? What if someone tries to jump one of us?" Kyle asked. I knew Kyle was more worried about me then he was about himself.
"You're a hockey player. You can handle yourself," he said.
"Excuse me. With all due respect sir, it's not about handling myself, it's about you doing your job." I could hear the agitation in Kyle's voice.
"I heard you had a mouth on you."
"Yeah and I bet I know where you heard that from," Kyle hissed.
"You're walking on thin ice, Mr. Masters."
"What are you going to do to me? You already said you can't do shit about me, so what? What is it? What are you going to threaten me with? Do you even have anything?"
Mr. Harvey looked up for the first time and I could tell that he was not amused. I blurted out, "He's sorry. He doesn't mean what he's saying."
"Yes I do," Kyle argued.
"No, you don't. You've had a rough morning. That's all." I grabbed his hand. "Are we done Mr. Harvey?" He shook his head. I tugged at Kyle to get him to stand up with me. "We should get to our classes before the bell rings." He gave me an angry look and snatched his hand away from mine as he stood from his chair.
I thought Kyle would keep quiet, but he was only waiting until we reached the door. I went out in front of him and heard him say, "I'm not fucking sorry, Mr. Harvey" as he slammed the door shut.
"He said leave it open."
"I know what he said Pat, but thank you anyway for reminding me."
Kyle's tone was nasty and I didn't want to say another word to him so I gave him the cold shoulder all the way to his locker, but that didn't work because when we reached his locker, I discovered that he was giving me the cold shoulder, too. "Are you going to act like this all day?" I asked.
He put a fake smile on his face. "Like what?"
"Like a," I took a second to decide if I wanted to use the word I was thinking.
"Just say it," Kyle yelled. He was challenging me and I knew he knew what I was thinking. I decided not to say it. "Say it!" he yelled again.
"Like a bitch! Okay? I said it. Are you going to be this bitchy all day?" My anger over-powered my reason.
Kyle didn't look hurt or upset as he calmly replied, "I think I will."
For the first time in my life, I was happy to hear the warning bell. "I'll see you at lunch."
"Yeah, whatever."
I walked to my locker and grabbed a book for my first class. I could have been a grouch all day if I wanted to but I didn't see the point. I had to face the day for what it was and pray it didn't end like my last day at school because I couldn't deal with another one of those days.
I missed Drew and John the most in science class. I had to try to keep from crying when I looked at their empty desks and then the teacher made it worse when he asked me about them, "Will John and Drew be joining us some time today?"
"I don't think they'll be joining us for a while," I told him. He must have seen the despair on my face because he didn't ask anything else.
After class, Drew and John faded from my thoughts and all I could think about was my fight with Kyle. We shouldn't have been fighting and I made up my mind that I wasn't going to fight with him no matter how much he tried to goad me in to it. I sat down next to him at our table. "I'm sorry," I said.
"No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have treated you like that. I walked in here and I sat down at this table and for a second I was waiting on Nick and looking forward to seeing you and the guys walking over, because I was thinking I could ignore you and talk to them. Then I remembered that it's just us now, at least for today." He looked over at me. "I also remembered how cute you look when you walk towards me with your tray and how much I love you, even if you do drag me away from fights I can handle on my own."
"Good because I love you too and I'm only trying to protect you. And for the record, you look cute when you watch me walk over." We laughed and finished with smiles on both of our faces. It was my turn to bring down the mood. "You didn't have any weirdness about being in here again, did you?"
"Not really. I was more focused on still being upset with you than I was on thinking about the last time I was in here. What about you?"
"I was thinking about you too when I walked in."
Kyle surprised me with a question. "So how does it feel eating at a table with only two people at it?"
"I hadn't noticed, but now that you mention it, this is my first time eating at a table with only one other person. It's nice though. A little sad because I miss the guys, but I barely notice them anyway when you're around."
"Aww, aren't you sweet."
"You should know." I licked my lips as seductively as I could.
"And dirty too? How did I get so lucky?" We both giggled.
"What's so funny guys?" Jeremy asked as he stood at our table.
"Nothing, just me being silly," Kyle said.
"Would you guys mind if my friends and I sat with you today?"
"Of course not."
"Cool, this can be a hockey table." He waved his table over and every last one of them stood up and walked towards our table.
"That didn't last long," Kyle whispered.
"What?"
"The two person table. I guess you're still too cool for that." I started laughing again.
"Are you guys laughing at me?" Jeremy asked.
"No, we're not laughing at you." Kyle assured him. "I'm making fun of Pat. I guess I can tell you. I am no stranger to a two-person table, but Pat here has never had that experience. I was teasing him about it before you came over and now here you are, filling the table out for him."
"I can move," Jeremy said with a grin.
"That won't be necessary," Kyle told him.
The other guys filled in around us and lunch, although no where near the same level of happiness I had from being with my close friends, was a pleasurable experience. Kyle and I walked out of the cafeteria together and I was looking forward to seeing him in history class.
After getting feedback from the guys on the hockey team at lunch, I was confident that practice would be okay and the only events that worried me were the reprimand from Kyle's father that was waiting for us at his house, and finally talking to Chris, who was missing from school.
The rest of the school day was strange but comfortable. Some people talked to me, some people ignored me and some people talked about me, but nobody threatened me or said anything too far out of line. When I met up with Kyle after school, he reported the same types of things happened to him and he seemed relieved.
"I thought it would be so much worse," he confided as I drove him to the ice rink. "I guess we're yesterday's news." He laughed. I smiled because it was the kind of joke I would expect from Nick.
