Serenity
Chapter One
The scenery was lovely. Towering pine trees surrounded me. I was enveloped in this forest which I so often visited. It was peaceful, so tranquil. The smell of the fresh pine intoxicated my being. I felt so calm, so free of worry. The cool breeze blushed my tender cheeks. It sent a chill down my spine. The wildflowers were amazing. A whole array of rainbow colors. My mind was at peace whenever I visited my special forest. It was my sanctuary. But something was wrong. Something felt out of place. I couldn't make it out. It was so faint. I know I heard something in the wind. Someone was calling out to me. Someone found me in my place of escape. I listened carefully, twirling around and around trying to find the direction from where this intruder was coming from. My heart started beating faster. My face flustered. A strong breeze blasted me with cold air and I awoke from my slumber.
"Mmm ... " I moaned as I rubbed my eyes. I looked over at the clock. 7.30am. Another one of these dreams. I've been having the same dream lately. Always in this forest. Yet it wasn't a nightmare or anything. I felt so calm, so serene. It was as if I belonged there. It's so hard to explain. Yet there was always this voice. This voice calling out my name. I couldn't make it out. It was like a whisper in the wind. But I can feel it.
"Are you up yet Griffin?" My mum yelled out from downstairs.
"Yes. Mum. I'll be down in a few." I yelled back.
I got myself together and stopped thinking of that dream. I opened up the curtains and my room was filled with light. It was a beautiful day outside. Not a cloud in sight. The sun was at full force. The rays fell on my cheek started to warm me up. I walked over to my little stereo system and put on Enrique Iglesias.
I went into the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror. I saw a brown haired, green eyed boy staring back at me. His face pale and tender yet, full of life. You can see it in his pink cheeks. His neat brows hovering over those green eyes that seemed to bedazzle everyone who looked into them. His small tender nose, pointed at the end. His smooth supple pink lips, the structure of his smile. I just gazed into his eyes, the gateway to his soul, his being. I hoped to find something. Some purpose. Some meaning, but I got no where.
While I was staring deep into his eyes, "Sad Eyes" was playing.
"Because sad eyes ... never lie ...
Because sad eyes ... never lie ..."
His eyes, were just locked out to me. I couldn't see anything. I turned on the faucet and splashed cold water on my face.
Why was I thinking so much? Why was my mind pondering all these things? Why couldn't I be a normal teenager? I didn't know the answer to my question, but I hoped to find them. After I was done with my morning routine, I got dressed and grabbed my pack. I went downstairs and greeted my mother.
"Good morning mum," I approached her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"Morning dear. Did you sleep well?" she asked.
"Yes mum. I slept fine"
"There's breakfast on the table. Go eat will you."
"Yes mum."
I ate as fast as I could.
"Are you in a hurry dear?"
"Well I want to get to class you know. Plus I have to meet Madison along the way."
"Tell her I give my regards."
"I will. Ok. I'm gonna get going. Have a good day mum." I walked over and kissed her on the cheek and left the house.
I walked down the street and started to feel strange. I sensed something. Feelings of uneasiness swept through my body. I don't know why.
"Hey Griffin," someone called out.
I turned around and there was this tall dark haired guy. He seemed familiar but I couldn't recognize him. I wondered how he knew me.
"Umm ... Hi. Do I know you?" I asked him as he approached.
"Griffin. It's me. Tristan."
Tristan Manning. I don't know him very well but he's part of our friends. He's from Brazil. Well his dad is. His mom is from France. So he has the gorgeous dark looks of his dad, along with his mom's tenderness. The way his brows are shaped for instance, so delicate and fine. Or his mouth, a tender looking thing. But other than that, he has the hispanic looks.
"Tristan!!! Oh my god. It is you. I couldn't recognize you. You changed so much. You grew." I laughed. I gave him a big hug and he squeezed the breath out of me. "Man you're strong too."
"Yeah. I decided to work out and the results are pretty impressive aye? You look the same. Not a day past fourteen."
"They sure are. Yeah. Just my luck. You grew up but I didn't. So what's up with you?"
"Nothing much. Went to California to visit my pops. Got a tan. Buffed up a little. Had a good summer. What about you?"
"I stayed in town." I looked at him. He did change a bit. Looks more mature. Wasn't the same Griffin I knew a few months ago. He still had old Tristan look, just much more defined and mature now. I on the other hand still retained my youthful slendor. That babyface, the tender pink pinks, the smooth supple lips, the tousled brown hair. I wondered if I would ever look more manly. Not that I cared. Just pondered. "By the way, I have to go meet Madison. You don't mind coming along right?"
"No problem. I want to see miss Madison. I wonder how she looks like now."
"Cool."
We got up to Devil's Tower. That tower is supposedly haunted. It's been closed down now for 23 years. Ever since a priest fell from the bellfry. Or so the story goes. I didn't care much about those things. Just took it lightly. We past it by but I sensed something again. I didn't know what. Something from the tower. I peered over my shoulder past the gates and straight at the tower. I saw a light up near the bellfry. I stopped in my tracks and just gazed at it. I was transfixed on this light. I couldn't move my body. I felt as if my spirit was leaving my body. I was drained. I couldn't hear. Everything was dampered, faded, distant. My focus was on that light. I felt closer to it. It was calling out to me. It wanted something from me. Just as I was about to reach it, Tristan tapped me and brought me out of it.
"Hey. What's up? You looked tired."
"No. It's nothing. Hey. Did you see anything up on Devil's Tower?" I asked curiously.
"No. Why? You saw something?"
"I'm not so sure." I don't know. Was it just my imagination? Was I seeing things? My mind is giving all sorts of headaches lately. So much going on. Was I going through a midlife crisis at 18? That is so freaky. "Oh. We better get going. Don't want to keep Madison waiting now."
We started to pick up pace and met her in front of the school. Our high school, Kennedy High, is an old school dating back to the late 1800's. It was built in 1892. So it's more than a 100 years old now. It looks very old. Kept very well, but the late 19th century architechure was apparent. Vines ran amuck, but it gave the building a nice antique look. The lawn was in tip top shape. Trees provided shade for when the students would go outside to study.
"Hey Madison."
Now Madison Avery is a beautiful European chic from Germany. Her father as successful businessmen is german so she has his Aryian genes. Her mother is Japanese. You can imagine the mix. Tall, voluptuous, fair skinned, beautiful almond shape brown eyes, long dark brown hair. It hard to describe. She's has her asian feautures, but her dad's genes are most prominent. The asian genes just accencuate her features even more so.
"Hey Griffin. How are you doing? I'm ok. I didn't keep you waiting too long did I?"
"Nah. Just 5 minutes over due. So who's the cute guy?" she asked as she pointed to Tristan.
I laughed. And she obvisously got annoyed.
"You don't recognize him?" I asked. "It's Tristan Beckler silly."
"Oh my goodness!" she gasped. "He's changed. He's so cute now."
"Oh. What a stab to my fragile heart?" He feigned as he clasped his heart with both hands.
She giggled. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that now. I just meant that you changed a whole lot."
"Yeah yeah. I forgive you," he snickered.
"So what are you guys up to?"
"Nothing. Just walked past Devil's Tower and Griffin here got spooked by a ghost," he laughed.
"I did not. It was not a ghost," I retorted.
"Then what was it?" Madison asked. She looked at me with her amazing eyes, so wide, filled with extreme curiosity.
"I don't know. It was probably my imagination anyway." I didn't want to startle her. How would I tell her I saw a light and that I felt as if I left my body. That's way unbelievable. I wouldn't believe it myself.
Dong! Dong! Dong! Dong! The school bell rung. It was time for class, and we were going to be late.
We rushed to our classes and got in our seat in just the nick of time. I most of the students and all seemed familiar, except this one person. This guy. Someone I never seen before. He was sitting across the room in the seat that was in the corner. He was staring out the window concentrating on something. I looked for a little longer and just kept my business to myself.
The professor came in finally and started class. "It seems that we have a new student in class. A Mr. Vincent. Ethan Vincent will you please stand up and introduce yourself."
He slowly turned his head and stood up from his seat methodically. He turned towards the class and spoke. "I'm Ethan Vincent. It is a pleasure to be in this school for the remainder of the year." With that said, he sat down and began his gaze back out the window again.
"Thank you Mr. Vincent. That was very well said. Well let's begin the class now shall we. This is Psychology 101 ..."
The class was whizzing by. The teacher was blabbing on about something but I wasn't paying attention. I started to daydream and began to fade into a tranquil place.
It was so peaceful. The fresh pine needles pricking at my feet. The cool breeze blowing against my skin. It was the forest again. But this time, I heard somethign else. It was the sound of water. The sound was a constant blare. I followed it and was met by a beautiful waterfall. I approached closer. The water rushed down the cliff onto the rocks below. There was a lake. It was amazing. The crystal clear water. The mist - forming from the pressure of the water above combining with the water below - gently clung to my face. I just absorbed everything around me oblivious that someone was there with me again. An invader in my private place. I sensed motion behind me and turned around abruptly, only to be enveloped in darkness.
"Mr. Daniels, the least you can do if you don't want to pay attention in class is to feign interest."
The class laughed and I just covered myself in embarrassment. I wonder what the new kid was up to. I looked over and had the shock of my life. He was staring straight at me and he had this intense look on his face.
