I apologize for confusing readers with the character of Tristan. His last name is Manning. My thoughts were elsewhere and Beckler popped in from no where. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for reading. Ciao.
Serenity
Chapter Two
I started to get a gut wrenching feeling stomach. It was unbearable. I felt so uneasy. All sorts of things ran through my mind. The look on his face. It was so intense, so concentrated on one thing. What was he doing? Why was he staring at me with such intensity? Was he reading my mind? I train of thought was broken when the professor interupted me once more.
"This is the last time I will interupt the class to ask you to pay attention. The next time and I will have to ask you to leave my class Mr. Daniels."
"I'm so sorry. It wont' happen again," I replied as I covered my face in embarrassment.
"I would hope so," he retorted.
Ring, Ring, Ring, Ring.
It was the bell. Thank god. I had enough of this class. It was time for lunch. I got up and out of the room as fast as I could. I felt as if someone was watching me but I didn't dare look back. I just had to get out of there . I met up with Madison along the way and told her everything. She laughed at my daydreaming but was curious about the newcomer.
"Who's the new guy? Why was he staring at you? Are you sure he was staring at you? What if he was just looking at someone else or something behind you caught his eye? I doubt that someone would stare at a stranger like that."
"Like I said, all I know is that his name is Ethan Vincent. He's new in town I guess. And I don't know. Now that you mention it, he could've been looking at someone or something else. But I just had the feeling he was looking at me you know." I replied.
"Oh give me a break. Stop being paranoid. Most likely, he wasn't staring at you. And if he was, it was probably b/c you looked the youngest in the class, and was probably wondering who the fourteen year old was," she snapped back, laughing while at it
"Real funny. I can't help looking like this you know. Blame my parents for giving me youthful looks, not me. And when are my hormones going to kick in? Do you think I'll look like this in my twenties? How will I get a job? Will anyone hire me," I asked nervously.
"Oh get a grip. You are way over reacting. Just give it time. You look cute the way you are. I can say you are my little brother and they will believe me."
"And I'll tell them all about my sister. You know, all the secrets"
"No you didn't." She went to hit me on the arm but I dodged her and ran into the cafeteria. It was a big mistake. I collided with someone and I fell to the ground in a daze. But my fellow students found it hilarious and erupted in laughter. The jock's name calling was thrown in here and there. You know, the ignorant filth that spewed out of their mouth."
"I'm sorry. I should've watched where I was going." I gathered myself and started to stand. I hand reached out and helped me up.
"No. It is my fault. I'm sorry," the person said.
I finally looked at who I bumped into and it was Ethan. My jaw dropped and the erieness of it crept through my being. He still had a grip on my forearm, and that shook me even more so. He noticed my trembling and asked me what was wrong, if I was hurt and all. I couldn't speak but I managed to force out three words.
"No ... I'm fine ... "
I pulled my arm back and he let go. He apologized again and left. I don't know why I reacted the way I did. It felt so strange. I couldn't explain it. Madison was asking all sorts of things, but my mind wasn't there. I was just absorbed in the creepiness of it all. And of course to why I was trembling the way I did.
"Griffin. Are you ok?"
"Mmm ... yeah I'm fine"
"Why were you shaking like that?"
"What? I was shaking?" I said, trying to pretend nothing happened.
"Yeah. You were. You aren't hurt are you?"
"No I'm fine. Just a little bump. It's nothing really. Now lets get some lunch. I'm hungry."
We got our lunches and decided to sit outside. We sat under a huge Oak. It branches spread out like a fan. I figured this tree was as old as the school was. It was huge. It took three people, hand to hand, to wrap around the trunk of this beauty of nature.
My mind wandered to Ethan. I didn't know why. I just thought of how strange things were. How I was trembling when he was touching me. How he was staring at me intently, studying every part of my being, with his beautiful heather colored eyes. They say a person's eyes are the gateway to his soul and I longed so much to find mine, but I could never penetrate the surface, to go beyond the green color of the iris's. To look deep within myself, and understand my place in the world. To find the piece of the jig saw to complete my life. But I could never penetrate the barrier, so how could I expect to delve deeper and find the answers to my questions.
"Are you going to eat or what?"
"Yeah. I was just thinking about something."
"You always are thinking about something. Why don't you tell me what this time?"
"I tell you whats on my mind. It's just I don't know how to explain them to you sometimes."
"I know. I just want you to know that I'm here for you always remember that ok." She said, looking down at her food and picking at it with a fork
"I know. I do. Thanks Madison," and I gave her a big hug.
I am thankful for having Madison in my life though. It's something that I do cherish and can comprehend at least. I know she's in my life and is my foundation if I ever needed someone to turn to. How did she come into my life? Well, her mother was my mothers best friend since high school, and they promised eachother that when they both got married and had children, they would name them after one another. Madison's mother's name is Melanie, while my mother's name, is Madison as you can figure out. But how was I named? Well, since my mother didn't have a girl, she decided to name me Griffin after the famous actress Melanie Griffin. If she couldn't name me Melanie, then why not name me Griffin. It had some relevance to the old promise they made so long ago.
"Madison..."
"Yeah?"
"I love you," I told her.
"Aww ... " She sniffled. "I love you too Griffin." And we shared another hug. This time with tear filled eyes.
Time flew by quickly and it was time to go home. I stood outside by the big Oak and waited for Madison. My mind went blank and I actually lavished it. It was some free time for myself and away from all my thoughts. I just stood there staring straight ahead oblivious to everyone around me. But something caught my attention. I didn't know what. It was faint, but I sensed something. Call it gut feeling or what not, but I know when something is up and I sensed it then. I looked over to the street and there was Ethan driving past looking straight at me again. This time, he really spooked me. I started to really feel uneasy and I couldn't just put it off as Madison said. He wanted something. I didn't know what. But I could feel something there. Something not quite right. Luckily, the car went by quick enough, and his gaze was averted, but I couldn't help feeling weird after that. I still waited for Madison but she didn't show. I saw Tristan and I went up to him and asked him if he seen Madison or not.
"Hey man. Was just looking for you. Madison said she couldn't make it and apologized for not telling you herself, but she had to run home and asked me to tell you."
"Oh ok. I was wondering what she was up to. So what's up with you?"
"I'm ok. Gotta run right now. I'll talk to you later ok. Sorry."
"It's ok. See you. Bye."
"Bye."
We said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. I decided to take the long route home. I wasn't in the mood to be home just yet. The weather was holding up so why not.
I looked at all the houses. All so generic. I guess it was a cheap and efficient way to make all the houses the same, but then the community looks so boring. I was glad I lived in a house all by itself with land around. Much more freedom to sit down on the lawn and just stare up into the star lit skies, to just gaze up into a beautiful creation whether God made it or it was just formed naturally. It was something there to remind us of how beautiful simplicity is and to let us cherish the little things.
I got home and went up to my room. I was exhausted. Not from any excessive work, but just feeling tired. I guess my mind over exerted itself and now my body is paying for it. I layed down on my bed and closed my eyes.
I was high above the mountains staring down at the world. Everything looked so vast. Forest covered the base of the mountain and stretched all the way to the horizon. The sun was just setting above the horizon. Fuschia and pink clouds lit the horizon. The forest was lush and full of life. The rivers intertwined with the greenery and provided a necessary nutrient for the trees and the animals.
I sat down on the ledge and just overlooked this wonderful site. My whole being felt serene. But, he was there. The same person who always invaded my space. He was sitting next to me. This time, I didn't care. I couldnt' be afraid anymore. He spoke to me.
"It's beautiful isn't it?"
"It is."
"I've been looking all over for you."
"I felt you." I replied in a calm tone, still gazing at mother nature.
"I need you," he said.
"Why? I'm nothing."
"Don't say that. You are special. You'll see one day."
"I don't even understand myself. How can I be special?"
"Hush. Have faith. You'll see."
"Who are you?" I asked him.
"Your other half," he replied.
I turned my head to look at him but he was gone. My other half. I wondered ...
Ring Ring Ring. Ring Ring Ring. Ring Ring Ring.
The telephone woke me up. I was grogggy and still tired.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Hey Griffin. I'm sorry about afterschool." It was Madison.
"It's cool."
"Thanks. I'll talk to you later ok. And stop thinking so much. You'll only make yourself worry more."
"I know mother," I said sarcastically.
"You better. Bye."
"Bye."
I put the phone back on the receiver and just layed in bed, stared up at the whitewashed ceiling, and thought about the events that occured.
